cardiovascular diseases ,nervous system diseases - Abstract
Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, decreased volumes of stroke admissions and mechanical thrombectomy were reported. The study's objective was to examine whether subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions demonstrated similar declines. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional, retrospective, observational study across 6 continents, 37 countries and 140 comprehensive stroke centres. Patients with the diagnosis of SAH, aneurysmal SAH, ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions and COVID-19 were identified by prospective aneurysm databases or by International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes. The 3-month cumulative volume, monthly volumes for SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling procedures were compared for the period before (1 year and immediately before) and during the pandemic, defined as 1 March-31 May 2020. The prior 1-year control period (1 March-31 May 2019) was obtained to account for seasonal variation. Findings There was a significant decline in SAH hospitalisations, with 2044 admissions in the 3 months immediately before and 1585 admissions during the pandemic, representing a relative decline of 22.5% (95% CI -24.3% to -20.7%, p

- Abstract
A cluster of Legionnaires’ disease (LD) with 10 confirmed, three probable and four possible cases occurred in August and September 2016 in Dendermonde, Belgium. The incidence in the district was 7 cases/100 000 population, exceeding the maximum annual incidence in the previous 5 years of 1.5/100 000. Epidemiological, environmental and geographical investigations identified a cooling tower (CT) as the most likely source. The case risk around the tower decreased with increasing distance and was highest within 5 km. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1, ST48, was identified in a human respiratory sample but could not be matched with the environmental results. Public health authorities imposed measures to control the contamination of the CT and organised follow-up sampling. We identified obstacles encountered during the cluster investigation and formulated recommendations for improved LD cluster management, including faster coordination of teams through the outbreak control team, improved communication about clinical and environmental sample analysis, more detailed documentation of potential exposures obtained through the case questionnaire and earlier use of a geographical information tool to compare potential sources and for hypothesis generation. - Abstract
Recruiting students into the health professions is an ever growing problem as young people are faced with many attractive options for career choices. At the same time, a rapidly growing elderly population will require more health professionals to maintain the health system. To address this recruitment issue an interdisciplinary health professions course delivered to high schools and college campuses in North Dakota via the Internet was developed at the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS). The participating high schools embedded the course in the health professions curriculum and students were given the option of receiving college credit. The course features presentations by professionals representing 16 different health professions and were developed using a new software called Macromedia Breeze that allows for easy recording of PowerPoint audio presentations and imputing video content into the presentation. Blackboard was utilized for course management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To acquire a deeper understanding of factors that influence adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in a pediatric population. METHODS: We performed a qualitative study of adherence in children who receive HAART in a Belgian pediatric acquired immune deficiency syndrome referral center. Eleven primary caregivers were interviewed to assess their child's adherence and influencing factors. The interview guidelines were developed on the basis of an extensive literature review. Adherence to treatment was assessed using caregivers' self-report and laboratory results. Content analysis for common items was performed, and statements of adherent and less-adherent patients were compared. RESULTS: Three main factors influenced adherence. Adherent patients were found to internalize the medical information to a stronger extent than less-adherent patients. Adherent patients showed stronger motivation to stick to the medical regimen on the basis of personal cost-benefit analyses, ie, perceived benefits outweighed the costs or difficulties experienced. Adherent patients developed greater problem-solving capacities, ie, ways to deal with practical complications of medication intake. The interviews revealed a fourth, more dynamic component: knowledge, motivation, and capacities evolved in a progressive way, related to individual stages of coping with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). CONCLUSIONS: The data suggest that coping with HIV and the process of establishing good adherence may be interrelated. Caregivers who accept the disease may be more likely to internalize the received information and thus develop a stronger motivation to fight for the child's life. Problem-solving skills sustain this adherence, and medication becomes a priority in the adherent caregivers' daily lives. On the contrary, less-adherent caregivers may be situated at less advanced stages of the coping process. Thus, tailor-made approaches adapted to the individual HIV-related coping strategies need to be developed to improve adherence in children and caregivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chemical composition and some biological properties of four algae (Ulva rigida, Codium bursa, Cystoseira barbata, and Ceramium diaphanum) collected from the Gabes Gulf area (Tunisia) were examined. Ash (11.35-29.08% weight/dry weight [w/dw]) and total sugar (13.20-18.70% w/dw) were the most abundant contents in these algae. Protein contents were moderate (5.03-14.00% w/dw), with the red alga (C. diaphanum) having the highest value. Lipid contents were within the range mentioned for seaweeds (<3% w/dw). Saturated fatty acids occurring at the highest proportions were C16:0 (24.53-41.37%) and C12:0 (10.37-24.44%). The most abundant monounsaturated fatty acid was C18:1n-9 (21.74-54.22%), whereas the most abundant polyunsaturated fatty acid was C18:2n-6 (9.57-11.71%). Variations in chemical composition can be attributed to both environmental and genetic differences among species. All algal extracts displayed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus simulans (inhibition diameter: 10-25 mm), antioxidant activity (radical scavenging activity: 0.8-23%), and anti-inflammatory activity (48-61% inhibition of the phospholipase A2 activity); therefore, the marine algae examined can be considered abundant resources of bioactive molecules. We investigated the effects of high-intensity interval (HIIT) and small-sided games (SSG) training programs on physiological and psychological responses in young soccer players. Twenty-four male soccer players (age 16.7 ± 0.9 years) were divided into two groups (HIIT and SSG) and completed a 6-week training programs consisting of two training sessions a week. HIIT consisted of intermittent runs lasting 15 s at the 110% maximum aerobic speed followed by a passive recovery lasting 15 s; SSG was instead structured in a 4 versus 4 players games on a playing field of 25 × 35 m. The muscular power of the lower body was assessed before and after each training session using the 5-jump test to leg length, and two incremental field tests (VAMEVAL test and modified agility t-test). Our results show that HIIT and SSG have similar beneficial effects on the variables connected to the soccer-specific performance and the endurance with little influence on neuromuscular performances. Psychological responses were assessed using the “physical activity enjoyment scale”, the Hooper index and the POMS variables. Results showed that SSG offers greater perceived enjoyment than what can be achieved with HIIT. In conclusion, SSG can be considered an effective, more motivating, and fun soccer-specific training that brings about physiological responses and neuromuscular adjustments in young soccer players.

The vaccination coverage in Flanders is high, but some regions show lower vaccination willingness as compared to the overall vaccination coverage. Beginning November of 2021, the vaccination rate in Flanders was above 93% in age groups above 45 years, and around 85% in the age groups 12 to 44 years. Apart from Flanders as a whole, focus here is on the health sector Maasland, which has a slightly lower vaccination rate, especially in the age groups 12 to 44 years. In the Maasland region, located on the east-ern border of Flanders, there are between 1% and 10% less vaccinated individuals than expected according to the vaccination rate in the whole of Flanders, with lowest vaccination rates in the south of the Maasland region. We study the impact of ethnic diversity in the population, population composition with respect to the ethnicity of individuals (in the sense of how the local population composition differs from the Flemish average), and socio-economic status on the vaccination rate at the level of the statistical sec-tor, apart from the effect of age. We explain the statistical methods to investigate geographical differ-ences and illustrate how one can deal with incomplete information in vaccination registries. Ethnic diversity in a region is associated with lower vaccination rates, as is a lower regional socio-economic sta-tus. The composition of the population in Maasland is associated with a 35% reduction in the odds to get vaccinated as compared to the overall Flemish population.(c) 2022 The Authors. Antimicrobial susceptibility and frequency of occurrence of clinical blood isolates in Sfax-Tunisia (1993–1998). The choice of antimicrobial therapy for the treatment of bacteremia is often empirical and based on the knowledge of susceptibility profiles of the most common bacteria causing such infections. This study determines the bacterial etiology of bacteremic episodes and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns recorded at a teaching hospital, from January 1993 to December 1998. We collected 2979 strains responsible for bacteremia. Gram negative bacteria were predominant (60%). The organisms recovered most frequently were Staphylococcus aureus (18.9%), Escherichia coli (14.7%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (14%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (7.6%). The incidence of resistance to methicillin were 17.4% for Staphylococcus aureus and 26.8% for coagulase negative Staphylococcus. No resistance to glycopeptides was observed among the enterococci and staphylococci studied. 27.7% of enterobacteriaceae were resistant to third generation cephalosporins. Imipenem was the most active agent against gram negative bacteria. To carry out a surveillance of bacteremic episodes occurring at every hospital, it is necessary to provide valuable information which should be the basis for effective empiric therapy. - Abstract
- Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent globally, despite being a potentially curable disease. This disease typically affects the lungs but may involve many extrapulmonary sites, especially in patients with risk factors such as HIV infection. The clinical features of extrapulmonary TB may mimic many different disease entities, particularly at less common thoracic sites such as the heart, chest wall, and breast. Imaging has an important role in the early diagnosis of TB, helping to detect disease, guide appropriate laboratory investigation, demonstrate complications, and monitor disease progress and response to treatment. Imaging supports the clinical objective of achieving effective treatment outcome and complication prevention. This review aims to highlight the imaging spectrum of TB affecting both pulmonary and extrapulmonary sites in the thorax. We also briefly provide key background information about TB, such as epidemiology, pathogenesis, and diagnosis., Competing Interests: None declared., (© The Author(s) 2024. - Abstract
Introduction: Following harmonization efforts by the Belgian National Reference Center for SARS-CoV-2, semi-quantitative PCR test (SQ-PCR) results, used as a proxy for viral load, were routinely collected after performing RT-qPCR tests., Methods: We investigated both the personal characteristics associated with SQ-PCR results and the transmission dynamics involving these results. We used person-level laboratory test data and contact tracing data collected in Belgium from March 2021 to February 2022. Personal characteristics (age, sex, vaccination, and laboratory-confirmed prior infection) and disease stage by date of symptom onset were analyzed in relation to SQ-PCR results using logistic regression. Vaccine effectiveness (VE) against a high viral load (≥10
7 copies/mL) was estimated from the adjusted probabilities. Contact tracing involves the mandatory testing of high-risk exposure contacts (HREC) after contact with an index case. Odds ratios for test positivity and high viral load in HREC were calculated based on the SQ-PCR result of the index case using logistic regression models adjusted for age, sex, immunity status (vaccination, laboratory-confirmed prior infection), variant (Alpha, Delta, Omicron), calendar time, and contact tracing covariates., Results: We included 909,157 SQ-PCR results of COVID-19 cases, 379,640 PCR results from index cases, and 72,052 SQ-PCR results of HREC. High viral load was observed more frequently among recent cases, symptomatic cases, cases over 25 years of age, and those not recently vaccinated (>90 days). The vaccine effectiveness (VE) of the primary schedule in the first 30 days after vaccination was estimated at 47.3% (95%CI 40.8-53.2) during the Delta variant period. A high viral load in index cases was associated with an increased test positivity in HREC (OR 2.7, 95%CI 2.62-2.79) and, among those testing positive, an increased likelihood of a high viral load (OR 2.84, 95%CI 2.53-3.19)., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2024 Braeye, Proesmans, Van Cauteren, Brondeel, Hens, Vermeiren, Hammami, Rosas, Taame, André and Cuypers.)- Published

The six-minute walking test (6MWT) is commonly used to measure functional capacity in field settings, primarily through the distance covered. This study aims to establish reference curves for the six-minute walking distance (6MWD) and peak heart rate (PHR) and develop a predictive equation for cardiovascular capacity in Tunisian children and adolescents. A total of 1501 participants (706 boys and 795 girls), aged 10-18 years, were recruited from schools in Tunisia. The Lambda (L), Mu (M), and Sigma (S) methods (LMS method) were employed to develop smoothed percentile curves for 6MWD and PHR. Multivariate linear regression was utilized to formulate a prediction equation for 6MWD. Smoothed percentiles (3rd, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 97th) for 6MWD and PHR were presented with age. All variables showed a strong positive correlation (p < 0.001) with a six-minute walking distance (r ranged from 0.227 to 0.558 for girls and from 0.309 to 0.610 for boys), except resting heart rate, which showed a strong negative correlation (girls: r = -0.136; boys: r = -0.201; p < 0.001). Additionally, PHR showed a weak correlation (p > 0.05). The prediction equations, based on age as the primary variable, were established for both genders. For boys: 6MWD = 66.181 + 38.142 × Age (years) (R
2 = 0.372; Standard Error of Estimate (SEE) = 122.13), and for girls: 6MWD = 105.535 + 28.390 × Age (years) (R2 = 0.312; SEE = 103.66). The study provides normative values and predictive equations for 6MWD and PHR in Tunisian children and adolescents. These findings offer essential tools for identifying, monitoring, and interpreting cardiovascular functional deficits in clinical and research settings., (© 2024 The Author(s). - Abstract
Background/Objectives: Patellofemoral syndrome is a common osteoarticular condition that affects many individuals. Various treatment options are available, with a significant emphasis on targeted muscle-strengthening exercises. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of isokinetic muscle strengthening on muscle strength, joint range of motion, quality of life, physical performance, and pain tolerance in overweight/obese women with patellofemoral syndrome. Methods: Twenty-four overweight or obese women with patellofemoral syndrome participated in the study during September and October 2023 in a private medical facility for physical medicine and functional rehabilitation. They were randomly assigned to one of two groups for six weeks of isokinetic muscle strengthening. The first group (ISO.G) followed a rehabilitation program combined with isokinetic muscle strengthening. A second group (PCM.G) followed a rehabilitation program that includes an isokinetic protocol in passive compensation movement. The extensors' peak torque was measured before and after training. Results: The flexors' peak torque, stair climbing test, 10 m walk, chair lift, monopodal support, goniometric knee flexion test, heel-buttock distance measurement, pain, and quality of life scores improved significantly in both groups. The ISO.G, on the other hand, benefited from a significant increase in quadriceps muscle strength revealed by the extensors' peak torque. Conclusions: For the treatment of patellofemoral syndrome, isokinetic muscle strengthening in concentric mode appears to have a significant advantage over the classic rehabilitation program with isokinetic passive compensation, particularly in muscle strength gain, in addition to the improvement of joint range of motion, quality of life, physical performance, and pain tolerance. Isokinetic training may be recommended as a beneficial approach for the rehabilitative treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome in overweight/obese women.

- Abstract
Our study explores the utilization of a phase change material (PCM) to optimize energy efficiency and thermal comfort in buildings in tropical climates. Employing a comprehensive multi-scale approach, this research encompasses both microscopic and macroscopic analyses to rigorously evaluate the PCM's performance under various environmental conditions. It evaluates the effect of PCMs on ambient conditions in the face of temperature variations and high humidity, utilizing experimental methods at different scales (microscopic and macroscopic). Microscopic analyses reveal the composite structure of the PCM, consisting of microencapsulated paraffin within a cellulose fiber matrix. At a macroscopic scale, experiments using two real-scale test cells evaluated thermal performance and its influence on thermal comfort. Temperature and humidity data were meticulously collected over an extended period to assess the PCM's impact on indoor regulation. We employed type T thermocouples and flux meters to monitor thermal dynamics and energy flux across the building walls. This setup facilitated a detailed comparison of temperature variations and thermal comfort metrics between the PCM-equipped test cell and a control cell. The results indicate a seasonal duality of the PCM: beneficial in winter for thermal regulation but problematic in summer due to excessive heat retention. The conclusions highlight the importance of carefully selecting and adapting PCMs for tropical climates, thus providing valuable insights for designing sustainable buildings in regions facing similar climatic challenges.

- Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic led to sustained surveillance efforts, which made unprecedented volumes and types of data available. In Belgium, these data were used to conduct a targeted and regular assessment of the epidemiological situation. In addition, management tools were developed, incorporating key indicators and thresholds, to define risk levels and offer guidance to policy makers. Categorizing risk into various levels provided a stable framework to monitor the COVID-19 epidemiological situation and allowed for clear communication to authorities. Although translating risk levels into specific public health measures has remained challenging, this experience was foundational for future evaluation of the situation for respiratory infections in general, which, in Belgium, is now based on a management tool combining different data sources., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2024 De Muylder, Laisnez, Stefani, Boulouffe, Faes, Hammami, Hubin, Molenberghs, Sans, van de Konijnenburg, Van der Borght, Brondeel, Stassijns and Lernout.)

Tuberculosis (TB) typically affects the lungs, but may involve many extra-pulmonary sites; with the latter especially prone in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection. The clinical features of extra-pulmonary TB are often non-specific, mimicking many different disease entities. Application of the most appropriate imaging modality and knowing the imaging findings with clinical context awareness help initiation of further investigations, diagnosis and early treatment. This pictorial essay highlights the imaging spectrum of extra-pulmonary TB affecting the supra-thoracic region, i.e. brain, neck, and ear, nose and throat., (© 2024 Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists.)

- Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially curable disease that is a leading cause of death globally. While it typically affects the lungs, this disease may involve many extra-pulmonary sites, particularly in patients with risk factors. Extra-pulmonary TB often mimics a variety of different diseases, posing a diagnostic dilemma. Imaging aids in early diagnosis of TB, especially in patients with non-specific or atypical symptoms found at extra-pulmonary infra-thoracic locations. Imaging also helps guide appropriate laboratory investigation, monitor disease progress, and response to treatment. This review aims to highlight the imaging spectrum of TB affecting the infra-thoracic region, that is, gastrointestinal tract, abdominal lymph nodes, peritoneal cavity, intra-abdominal solid organs, and urogenital system., (© The Author(s) 2023. Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) of the musculoskeletal system usually manifests with non-specific clinical features, mimicking a variety of diseases. Diagnosis and treatment of spinal and extra-spinal musculoskeletal TB are often challenging. Imaging has an important role in detecting this disease, aiding diagnosis, identifying complications, and monitoring disease progression. Radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging are the key imaging modalities utilized. Radiologists should aim to be familiar with the spectrum of imaging features of TB affecting spinal and extra-spinal locations in the musculoskeletal system., (© The Author(s) 2023. - Abstract
The tennis serve is closely related to the quality of the tennis match. However, the isokinetic parameters associated with the tennis serve are still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between ball velocity and isokinetic shoulder strength in tennis serve and to determine isokinetic strength parameters that can predict tennis serve velocity. A total of 13 elite male athletes (16.8 ± 1.5 years) voluntarily participated in the study. The athletes' shoulder internal-external rotation, extension-flexion and abduction-adduction strengths were measured with 5-5-15 repetitions at 60°/s, 180°/s, 240°/s angular velocities. Later, the athletes' 1st, 2nd, and average serve ball speeds were determined using a handheld radar gun. Significant correlations were found between ball speed and isokinetic tennis serve strength ( r = 0.556-0.819; p < 0.05). The correlations between ball speed and isokinetic strength performance were higher at 180°/s and 240°/s angular velocities. Extension (240°/s; r = 0.819), flexion (180°/s; r = 0.755), abduction (240°/s; r = 0.733), adduction (240°/s; r = 0.684) and internal rotation (180°/s; r = 0.803) were highly correlated with ball velocity. These findings suggest that strength training to increase the ball speed of the tennis serve should be performed fast at high angular velocities and planning should focus on the strength of extension, flexion, abduction, adduction and internal rotation.

- Abstract
Lysine acylations on histones and their recognition by chromatin-binding reader domains and removal by histone deacylases function as an important mechanism for eukaryotic gene regulation. Histone lysine crotonylation (Kcr) is an epigenetic mark associated with active transcription, and its installation and removal are dynamically regulated by cellular epigenetic enzymes. Here, we report binding studies and enzyme assays with histone H3K9 peptides bearing simplest Kcr analogs with varying hydrocarbon chain length, bulkiness, rigidity and polarity. We demonstrate that the AF9 YEATS domain displays selectivity for binding of different acylation modifications on histone H3K9 peptides and exhibits preference for bulkier cinnamoylated lysine over crotonylated lysine and its mimics. SIRT2 shows deacylase activity against most of acylated H3K9 peptides bearing different crotonyllysine mimics, however, it displays a poor ability for the removal of cinnamoyl and trifluorocrotonyl groups. These results demonstrate different substrate selectivities of epigenetic proteins acting on crotonyllysine and pave the way for rational design and development of AF9 YEATS and SIRT2 inhibitors for treatment of human diseases, including cancer., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare the following financial interests/personal relationships which may be considered as potential competing interests: [Jasmin Mecinovic reports financial support was provided by Novo Nordisk Foundation. - Abstract
Introduction: The management of intracranial aneurysms has evolved in the recent years, and endovascular coiling has become the first treatment option in many countries. In Tunisia, this neuroendovascular treatment meets a progressive but slow development, slowed down, by the economic component., Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the global cost of endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms and determine the factors influencing the variation of direct medical cost., Methods: A prospective study including patients who underwent interventional neuroradiology procedures for intracranial aneurysms between March 2019 and June 2019. Total cost (direct medical and non medical cost) was assessed using the micro-costing method. Statistical analysis (descriptive followed by a multivariate analysis) was performed by PSPP software with a p-value< 0.05 considered statistically significant., Results: Twenty-nine patients were included (mean age 54±14 years). The average overall cost of treatment was 15 877 DT (5 081€), ranging from 8 005 DT (2 562 €) to 36 325 DT (11 624 €). The average cost of medical devices used during the procedure was 13 548 DT (4 335 €) which represents 85.3% of the total cost. The direct medical cost was particularly influenced by aneurysm's and neck's size, and by the total cost of coils., Conclusions: The medical devices used during the procedure greatly influenced the direct medical cost of the management of intracranial aneurysms.

- Abstract
Introduction: COVID-19 remains a major concern globally. Therefore, it is important to evaluate COVID-19's rapidly changing trends. The fractal dimension has been proposed as a viable method to characterize COVID-19 curves since epidemic data is often subject to considerable heterogeneity. In this study, we aim to investigate the association between various socio-demographic factors and the complexity of the COVID-19 curve as quantified through its fractal dimension., Methods: We collected population indicators data (ethnic composition, socioeconomic status, number of inhabitants, population density, the older adult population proportion, vaccination rate, satisfaction, and trust in the government) at the level of the statistical sector in Belgium. We compared these data with fractal dimension indicators of COVID-19 incidence between 1 January - 31 December 2021 using canonical correlation analysis., Results: Our results showed that these population indicators have a significant association with COVID-19 incidences, with the highest explanatory and predictive power coming from the number of inhabitants, population density, and ethnic composition., Conclusion: It is important to monitor these population indicators during a pandemic, especially when dealing with targeted interventions for a specific population., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2023 Natalia, Faes, Neyens, Hammami and Molenberghs.)

- Abstract
Since 2022, European countries have been facing an outbreak of mainly cutaneous diphtheria caused by toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae among asylum seekers. In Belgium, between 1 March and 31 December 2022, 25 cases of toxigenic C. diphtheriae infection were confirmed among asylum seekers, mostly among young males from Afghanistan. Multi-locus sequence typing showed that most isolates belonged to sequence types 574 or 377, similar to the majority of cases in other European countries. The investigation and management of the outbreak, with many asylum seekers without shelter, required adjustments to case finding, contact tracing and treatment procedures. A test-and-treat centre was organised by non-governmental organisations, the duration of the antimicrobial treatment was shortened to increase compliance, and isolation and contact tracing of cases was not possible. A vaccination centre was opened, and mobile vaccination campaigns were organised to vaccinate a maximum of asylum seekers. No more cases were detected between end December 2022 and May 2023. Unfortunately, though, three cases of respiratory diphtheria, including one death, were reported at the end of June 2023. To prevent future outbreaks, specific attention and sufficient resources should be allocated to this vulnerable population, in Belgium and at international level.

- Abstract
The goal of tracing, testing, and quarantining contacts of infected individuals is to contain the spread of infectious diseases, a strategy widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, limited research exists on the effectiveness of contact tracing, especially with regard to key performance indicators (KPIs), such as the proportion of cases arising from previously identified contacts. In our study, we analyzed contact tracing data from Belgium collected between September 2020 and December 2021 to assess the impact of contact tracing on SARS-CoV-2 transmission and understand its characteristics. Among confirmed cases involved in contact tracing in the Flemish and Brussels-Capital regions, 19.1% were previously identified as close contacts and were aware of prior exposure. These cases, referred to as 'known' to contact tracing operators, reported on average fewer close contacts compared to newly identified individuals (0.80 versus 1.05), resulting in fewer secondary cases (0.23 versus 0.28). Additionally, we calculated the secondary attack rate, representing infections per contact, which was on average lower for the 'known' cases (0.22 versus 0.25) between December 2020 and August 2021. These findings indicate the effectiveness of contact tracing in Belgium in reducing SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Although we were unable to quantify the exact number of prevented cases, our findings emphasize the importance of contact tracing as a public health measure. In addition, contact tracing data provide indications of potential shifts in transmission patterns among different age groups associated with emerging variants of concern and increasing vaccination rates., Competing Interests: Naima Hammami is an employee of the the Flemish Government’s Department of Care and Jorden Boone has been working as a consultant for this agency during the COVID-19 pandemic. - Abstract
The role of physical activity (PA) in minimizing non-communicable diseases is well established. Measurement bias can be reduced via ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) deployed via citizen-owned smartphones. This study aims to engage citizen scientists to understand how PA reported digitally by retrospective and prospective measures varies within the same cohort. This study used the digital citizen science approach to collaborate with citizen scientists, aged 13-21 years over eight consecutive days via a custom-built app. Citizen scientists were recruited through schools in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada in 2018 (August 31-December 31). Retrospective PA was assessed through a survey, which was adapted from three validated PA surveys to suit smartphone-based data collection, and prospective PA was assessed through time-triggered EMAs deployed consecutively every day, from day 1 to day 8, including weekdays and weekends. Data analyses included paired t-tests to understand the difference in PA reported retrospectively and prospectively, and linear regressions to assess contextual and demographic factors associated with PA reported retrospectively and prospectively. Findings showed a significant difference between PA reported retrospectively and prospectively (p = 0.001). Ethnicity (visible minorities: β = - 0.911, 95% C.I. = -1.677, -0.146), parental education (university: β = 0.978, 95% C.I. = 0.308, 1.649), and strength training (at least one day: β = 0.932, 95% C.I. = 0.108, 1.755) were associated with PA reported prospectively. In contrast, the number of active friends (at least one friend: β = 0.741, 95% C.I. = 0.026, 1.458) was associated with retrospective PA. Physical inactivity is the fourth leading cause of mortality globally, which requires accurate monitoring to inform population health interventions. In this digital age, where ubiquitous devices provide real-time engagement capabilities, digital citizen science can transform how we measure behaviours using citizen-owned ubiquitous digital tools to support prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2023 Ibrahim et al.
