Abstract

To verify the anisotropic effect on the thermal properties of hen egg white lysozyme crystals, we measured the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of lysozyme crystals, the c-axis of which was magnetically oriented along the wire direction. We used the transient short hot-wire method in a horizontally tilted superconducting magnet bore. The crystals were magnetically levitated at the solution interface by the radial component of the magnetic force. The crystals' thermal properties grown in the horizontal bore were consistently smaller values than those of the crystals grown in the vertical bore and randomly grown crystals without applying magnetic force. Abstract

Charge and energy transfers among Mn2+ ions determine the excited‐state dynamics in Mn2+‐based phosphors, which modulate the luminescence properties in various applications. However, in crystals with dense Mn2+ ions, luminescence is often quenched by antiferromagnetic interactions between adjacent Mn2+ ions or electron‐phonon interactions, which lead to energy transfer to the defect states. Here, the modulation of photoluminescence by Mn–Mn magnetic ordering in a 2D layered hybrid perovskite (CH3NH3)2MnCl4 is reported. Specifically, antiferromagnetic ordering and spin flopping reduce the bright optical transitions from coupled Mn2+ ions, whereas ferromagnetic ordering enhances the transitions. This magnetic effect competes with electron‐phonon interactions and determines the temperature‐ and magnetic‐field‐dependent photoluminescence, especially at low temperatures. This study not only enriches the understanding of the fundamental magneto‐optical properties of Mn2+‐based perovskites but also provides new insights into the development of high‐performance lead‐free light‐emitting devices. 17. Field-Induced Quantum Phase Transitions in the Pressure-Tuned Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet CsCuCl3.

Abstract

We present the phase diagram of magnetic field vs pressure for a triangular-lattice antiferromagnet CsCuCl3 surpassing the saturation field constructed by the magnetic-susceptibility measurements in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 55 T under pressures of up to 2.08 GPa. Up–up–down (UUD) and Y-coplanar phases were observed above 0.70 and 1.79 GPa, respectively. Based on theoretical calculations using the 1/S expansion method for the pressure dependence of the transition fields, we determined the parameters of the intrachain and interchain exchange interactions and easy-plane anisotropy. The emergence of the UUD and Y-coplanar phases is accompanied by a crossover from the semi-classical to the quantum spin regime in CsCuCl3, which is caused by a significant decrease in the ratio of intra- to interchain exchange interactions with increasing pressure. The temperature dependence of the magnetic phases at 2.08 GPa indicates that thermal fluctuations stabilized the UUD phase more effectively than the Y-coplanar and umbrella phases. Abstract

Double-differential neutron production cross sections (DDXs) for 200-MeV deuteron induced reactions on Li, Be, C, Al, Cu, Nb, In, Ta, and Au were measured at forward emission angles ranging from 0° to 25° by means of a time of flight (TOF) method with EJ301 liquid organic scintillators. The measured DDXs were compared with JENDL-5 and TENDL-2021 nuclear data, and theoretical model calculations using DEURACS and PHITS codes. It was found that the JENDL-5 and DEURACS calculation are in better agreement with the measured DDXs than the PHITS calculation, while TENDL-2021 fails to reproduce both the spectral shape and magnitude of the measured DDXs for all the targets.

Abstract

A shielding experiment using activation detectors was performed at the CERN High-energy AcceleRator Mixed-field (CHARM) facility and the CERN Shielding Benchmark Facility (CSBF). The protons (24 GeV/c) were bombarded into a 50-cm-thick copper target, and the released neutrons were transmitted through various shields located vertically upward from the target. Ordinary concrete slabs of 40- to 160-cm thicknesses and steel slabs of 20- to 80-cm thicknesses were installed by changing the material and the thickness of the shield. Activation detectors of bismuth, indium, aluminum, and graphite were variously placed in these shields and activated by high energy neutrons. From the radionuclide production rate in the activation detectors, the attenuation profiles through the various shielding materials were obtained for the reactions of 209Bi(n,xn)210-xBi(x = 4–9), 115In(n,n')115mIn, 27Al(n,α)24Na, and 12C(n,2n)11C. Estimated attenuation lengths of high energy neutrons through concrete and steel were compared with cited data and discussed. Monte Carlo simulations using FLUKA, PHITS, and GEANT4 were also performed as benchmark calculations, and they agreed with the experimental data, generally within a factor of 2. Abstract

Gas bremsstrahlung, generated by the interaction between stored electrons and residual gas in electron storage rings, is an important radiation source for the shielding of synchrotron radiation (SR) facilities. In recent SR facilities, hydrogen was found dominant in the residual gas of the vacuum chambers of the electron storage rings, although air has been conventionally assumed as the bremsstrahlung target for the shielding designs of SR beamlines extended from the electron storage ring. To study the effect of residual gas composition on the dose rate outside shields, we calculated the intensity of gas bremsstrahlung based on the gas composition for both the air and the residual gas expected in the recent electron storage rings using an analytical formula and general-purpose Monte Carlo codes for particle transport calculations. The analytical shielding calculation with a realistic gas composition was found to well reproduce the energy spectra of gas bremsstrahlung simulated by the Monte Carlo codes. The correction factors between the air and the realistic gas compositions are applied to the conventional analytical formulas for dose estimation of secondary radiations generated by the interaction between the bremsstrahlung from air and beamline components. Abstract

We developed a metallic pressure cell made of nickel-chromium-aluminum (NiCrAl) for use with a non-destructive pulse magnet and a magnetic susceptibility measurement apparatus with a proximity detector oscillator (PDO) in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 51 T under pressures of up to 2.1 GPa. Both the sample and sensor coil of the PDO were placed in the cell so that the magnetic signal from NiCrAl would not overlay the intrinsic magnetic susceptibility of the sample. A systematic investigation of the Joule heating originating from metallic parts of the pressure cell revealed that the temperature at the sample position remains at almost 1.4 K until approximately 80 $\%$ of the maximum applied magnetic field ($H_{\rm max}$) in the field-ascending process (e.g., 40 T for $H_{\rm max}$ of 51 T). Abstract
