The Taloka formation Sokoto Basin, Nigeria, was studied in an effort to discover and map the structural features favourable for metalliferous mineral deposits. High-resolution aeromagnetic data was subjected to structural analysis in order to map and highlight structural lineaments and their trends, as well as the depth of magnetic source bodies. Several digital filtering approaches were used to analyze, process, and interpret the data, including total gradient, total horizontal derivative of tilt of angle derivative (THDR_TDR), source parameter imaging (SPI), and spectral depth analysis. The RTE method was employed to prevent the North-South signal from predominating the results because the area was within the low latitude zones. The eastern Gundumi formation (Marafaro, Rujin Tsamia, Kwanawa, Dande, and Rikaka), the northeastern Taloka formation (Dutsen Bature, Bange, and Kumazo), and the western Taloka formation (Bejiji, Bagu, Danjiru, Baranzaki, and Awakala) are all found to have low amplitude magnetic anomalies. The research area exhibits magnetic anomalies with strong amplitudes (0.078 nT/m), which are consistent with the total gradient (AS) approach and might be caused by ferromagnetic minerals like iron stone. The aforementioned filters were also used to outline the lineaments (such as faults, fractures, or shear zones) believed to be associated with alteration zones, which are essential in locating the mineralized zones. The lineaments typically trend in the E-W, NW-SE, and NE-SW directions. Utilizing the SPI techniques, the depth of occurrence of the causative bodies was found to be below 250.3 m. The crustal magnetic field values were utilized to generate the two-dimensional Fourier transforms, from which the radial spectrum was recovered. The depth values were calculated using the slopes of the sixteen sections' spectrum energy against frequency graph. According to the findings, the study area's deeper depth lies between 1.10 and 1.69 km, while its shallower depth lies between 0.39 and 0.90 km. The study finds that alteration zones may harbour minerals and that the thickness of the sedimentary layer may not be sufficiently buoyant to support the build-up of hydrocarbons but will enhance the possibility of other mineralization.

Objective: To determine the spread of misinformation on salt water among Nigerians, salt water use for Ebola prophylaxis, and the role played by the social media during the 2014 Ebola outbreak. Methods: Information was collected from the general Nigerian population through online Google forms which were majorly disseminated via Facebook and WhatsApp platforms. The data retrieved was analysed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression. Results: A total of 703 questionnaires were included in the final analysis. The respondents’ mean age was (30.2±6.7) years, predominantly male (73.2%). Almost all of them (95.0%) had received some message to use salt water, 37.4% of whom received such message on social media. Around a half of them ever made an attempt to verify the health information they received on social media (50.9%), and about a quarter (24.0%) of them had used salt water during the outbreak. Many of them had used salt water because they believed it would not harm them (52.0%). Salt water was less likely to be used by those who had received such message on social media, as well as by those who had received some contrary information to salt use. Conclusions: Social media could serve as an effective tool in propagating health information and should be actively engaged by health agencies, to spread accurate information.

This paper examined the effect of liquidity on the capital structure of listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria for the period 2006-2016. The population of the study is ten (10) oil and gas companies listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) out of which eight (8) was used for the study. Linear regression technique using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) was used in analyzing the data obtained from the audited financial reports and accounts of the sampled companies. The findings revealed that liquidity has a positive and significant effect on the capital structure of listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria this finding is in line with the prediction of trade-off theory of debt financing. Based on the findings, this study recommends that listed oil and gas companies in Nigeria should remain liquid at all times by ensuring that their current liabilities do not exceed their current assets so that their financial obligations can be discharged on time.

Economic Gardening is an innovative economic development strategy whereby local businesses are fostered and encouraged, and the skills of local workers are upgraded. Since its inception in Littleton, Colorado in 1989, this concept has been put forward by various scholars as a viable and more sustainable economic development strategy than the traditional business attraction strategy. Various implementation experiences have provided further evidence of its effectiveness in improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of a community. This paper charts a roadmap for the development and future implementation of an economic gardening strategy for a Nigerian local government whose officials have shown an interest in adopting such a strategy. A seven-step process was adopted from a review of economic gardening scholarship: 1) Working hand-in-hand with local government officials and other stakeholders, 2) Identifying the community’s assets, 3) Developing a collaborative effort amongst all stakeholders, 4) Developing a clear and transparent operating agreement, 5) Identifying the key targets for services, 6) Developing an effective way to deliver these services, and 7) Communicating regularly with the community so as to gain and retain their support. A lack of political will and a lack of adequate infrastructure were identified as the two biggest obstacles to the successful implementation of the economic gardening strategy in the local government. The first obstacle was mitigated by the fact that it was the local government officials who approached our team to develop the strategy, whilst the second obstacle was mitigated by a proposal for the development of a solar farm within the local government via a public-private partnership with an international solar firm. It is hoped that a successful implementation of this strategy will improve the lives of the inhabitants of the local government and serve as an example for other Nigerian local governments.

The Paleocene sediments from the Sokoto Group, which comprises of the Gamba, Dange, and Kalambaina formations, were covered by Maastrichtian sediments from the Rima Group, which includes the Wurno, Dukamaje, and Taloka formations. High-resolution aeromagnetic and satellite gravity measurements were used to study these sediments. The aforementioned strata correspond to the Cretaceous and Tertiary strata in this research area and are situated in the south-eastern part of the Iullemmeden Basin. Our aim is to determine and explain the horizontal variation in density and magnetization using the whole regional satellite gravity and aeromagnetic data. The deeper magnetic and density sources were scanned using a two-dimensional (2D) radially averaged power spectrum analysis to produce the NE to SW and E to W trending models for the Moho, lower, and upper lithosphere under the study area. The results were further assessed using upward continuation, derivative analysis, and two-dimensional gravity and magnetic modeling. Numerous important structural trends (i.e., NE-SW, E-W & ENE-WSW), have been identified as a result of the vertical gradients for the potential field data. Spectral analysis and Euler deconvolution can be used to calculate the depths to the lower and upper mantle crust boundaries as well as the depth to Moho. The findings of a qualitative analysis point to an intrusion of the Gundumi and Illo Formations that has a northeast orientation as the primary cause of the significant gravitational and magnetic interaction. The differences in the deep-seated crustal structures and mineralized anomalous bodies with depth were visible on anomaly maps with an upward continuation of 5 km, 7 km, 20 km, and 30 km. Quantitatively, the 2D regional models along the selected profiles (L1, L2, L4, L6 and L7) display a typical lithostratigraphic succession of the Gundumi and Illo Formation (Continental Intercalaire, CI) type of crust, which is subdivided into the lower and upper mantle crust as well as the Moho. The sediment thickness by surface depth ranges from ∼4.06 km and ∼23.31 km. The Moho interface, lower and upper mantle crusts, and magnetic crust are all located at depths of around ∼10.23 km. The distance between the local models of the foundation rocks to the north and south of the Sokoto Group was approximately ∼6 to ∼8 km and ∼4.5 km, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The diagnosis and management of sepsis are very challenging especially in pediatric cases where the clinical criteria for the diagnosis overlap with nonbacterial etiologies of systemic inflammation. Initiation of antibiotic therapy for sepsis is necessary although the diagnostic evaluation is ongoing because delayed antibiotic therapy is associated with increased mortality. A highly sensitive and specific biomarker, such as procalcitonin, that improves decisions about initiating, discontinuing, or changing antibiotic therapy could have substantial clinical benefits of managing neonatal sepsis. This is a review of relevant published articles using extensive literature search made through google, PubMed/Medline, NLM, Scopus, and HINARI on randomized controlled and observational studies of procalcitonin-based diagnosis and antimicrobial-guided therapy especially in neonatal sepsis. Our systematic review found that procalcitonin-guided diagnosis, need for antibiotics, treatment evaluation give better outcome and prognosis than any other biomarker that were hitherto utilized in neonatal sepsis. Now that sepsis especially in children has become a frequent medical emergency, there is a need to extensively evaluate and possibly consider serum procalcitonin as an adjunctive marker to be combined with other commonly used approaches such as blood culture, full blood count, and differentials in order to enhance prompt and rational clinical management before blood culture results are available. The present study focuses on the antimicrobial activity and safety aspect of lactobacilli strains isolated from the anogenital region. Sixty-two lactobacilli strains were isolated from 52 healthy, non-menstruating women from a local health clinic in Puchong, Selangor, Malaysia and confirmed by 16S rDNA sequencing. The samples were collected by sterile cotton swabs and directly streaked onto De Man, Rogosa, Sharpe agar prior to transportation to the lab on ice. A selective preliminary screening against several Candida albicans and Candida glabrata strains identified 5 promising lactobacilli strains for the subsequent assays; L. delbreuckii 45E, L. fermentum 28E, L. mucosae 28C, L. reuteri 29A and L. reuteri 29B. A follow-up antibacterial assay identified L. delbreuckii 45E, L. reuteri 29A and L. reuteri 29B as the lactobacilli strains with the highest inhibitory activity. Subsequent assays including haemolytic activity, susceptibility to antibiotics, quantification of D/ l -lactic acid and H 2 O 2 production as well as bile salt hydrolase (BSH activity) indicated that L. reuteri 29B was a promising probiotic candidate. An acute toxicity study in vivo involving the administration of 1 × 108, 1 × 109 and 1 × 1010 cfu/mouse/day demonstrated that L. reuteri 29B did not exert any adverse effects towards the mice which were evident through the absence of pathological changes in the histological examination and blood test. There was also a lack of bacterial translocation as confirmed by Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). The present study highlights the possibility of utilising L. reuteri 29B as a probiotic. Introduction: Lactobacilli are well-documented probiotics that exert health benefits on their host. They exhibit characteristics that make them potential alternative treatments to address the antimicrobial resistance conundrum and diseases. Their mechanism of action varies with strain and species. Five lactobacilli strains previously isolated from the anogenital region were subjected to several assessments highlighted in the FAO/WHO document, 'Guidelines for the Evaluation of Probiotics in Food' to determine its suitability as potential probiotics. Methods: The five lactobacilli strains were subcultured onto Man de Rogosa agar (MRS). Their ability to auto- and co-aggregate was determined spectrophotometrically. Simultaneously, the cell surface hydrophobic properties of these strains towards xylene and toluene were evaluated using the microbial adhesion to hydrocarbon (MATH) test. The lactobacilli strains were also tested for their ability to withstand acid, bile and spermicide to determine their level of tolerance. Results: Lact. reuteri 29A, L. delbrueckii 45E and L. reuteri 29B exhibited the highest degree of auto- and co-aggregation properties. These lactobacilli strains also demonstrated high cell surface hydrophobicity, with the exception of L. delbrueckii 45E. Further tests to evaluate the isolated lactobacilli tolerance identified L. reuteri 29B as the most tolerant strain towards low pH (pH 2.5 for 4 h), high bile concentration (0.5% for 4 h) and high spermicides concentration (up to 10%). Conclusion: Out of the five lactobacilli strains which possessed high antimicrobial activities, L. reuteri 29B portrayed the best probiotic qualities with good auto- and co-aggregation abilities and high tolerance against acid, bile and spermicide.
