Initial teacher education plays an important role in preparing music teachers for schools. There is a growing interest in Chinese music teacher education, though limited research currently exists. This study investigated early-career teachers' perspectives concerning the efficacy of the initial music teacher education program at Yu Cai Normal University (pseudonym), China. This mixed-methods study used a sequential explanatory design where qualitative interview data were used to provide further explanation and detail regarding survey results. The perceptions of early-career music teachers were sought on the importance, effectiveness, and usefulness of their initial teacher education and the most rewarding and challenging aspects of their beginning careers. Phase 1 of the data collection consisted of an online survey with 32 music education graduates of Yu Cai Normal University from 2015-2019. Phase 2 involved one-on-one semi-structured online interviews with three participants offering a range of views. Phase 3 was a combined analysis and discussion of the findings from Phases 1 and 2. Findings indicate that early-career music teachers highly valued their initial teacher education and their studies adequately prepared them for work, though the quality of their university subjects could still be improved. Early-career music teachers embrace the challenges of the profession and choir, competitions, and the act of teaching are their greatest rewards. Practical subjects remain the most critical components of music teacher education, and theory must be situated in contextualized practice.

Abstract Background Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a common cause of childhood disability, and the incidence of DDH shows significant familial aggregation. As the genetic factors of DDH remain unknown, the correlation between five candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and DDH was evaluated in the Han Chinese population of Southwest China. Methods A case‒control association study was conducted in 276 patients with DDH and 318 healthy controls. SNP genotyping in the case and control groups was performed by SNPshot and multiple PCR. SNPs were genotyped in the case and control groups by multiplex PCR. The relationship between DDH and candidate SNPs was evaluated using the χ2 test. Remediating soil contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) presents a significant environmental challenge due to their toxic and carcinogenic properties. Traditional PAHs remediation methods—chemical, thermal, and bioremediation—along with conventional soil-washing agents like surfactants and cyclodextrins face challenges of cost, ecological harm, and inefficiency. Here we show an effective and environmentally friendly calixarene derivative for PAHs removal through soil washing. Thiacalix[4]arene tetrasulfonate (TCAS) has a unique molecular structure of a sulfonate group and a sulfur atom, which enhances its solubility and facilitates selective binding with PAHs. It forms host-guest complexes with PAHs through π-π stacking, OH-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, and electrostatic interactions. These interactions enable partial encapsulation of PAH molecules, aiding their desorption from the soil matrix. Our results show that a 0.7% solution of TCAS can extract approximately 50% of PAHs from contaminated soil while preserving soil nutrients and minimizing adverse environmental effects. This research unveils the pioneering application of TCAS in removing PAHs from contaminated soil, marking a transformative advancement in resource-efficient and sustainable soil remediation strategies.

ABSTRACTThe growing number of Mpox cases in China has posed a challenge to public health. The prevalence of men who have sex with men behaviors among students has been consistently increasing each year in China, accompanied by a high frequency of unprotected anal sex. As crowded places, schools are highly likely to cause an Mpox outbreak among students through long-term close contact. Understanding university students’ perceptions about Mpox and willingness to vaccinate play a vital role in implementing preventive measures in schools. This study aimed to assess knowledge, concerns, and vaccine acceptance toward Mpox among university students in North and Northeast China. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 3831 university students from seven universities in North and Northeast China between September 10 and September 25, 2023. This study found a relative insufficiency in Mpox knowledge among university students (71.60%), with less than half expressing concern about the Mpox outbreak (39.57%), and the majority exhibiting a positive attitude to vaccination (76.30%). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that a good knowledge level was associated with age, study discipline, education level, and a high level of concern about Mpox. Male, elderly, or highly educated participants had a low level of concern about Mpox. Participants with a high level of knowledge toward Mpox were more likely to have the vaccination willingness. This study might help governments and schools to understand students’ Mpox perceptions and vaccination intentions, enabling them to implement effective measures in addressing the issue of inadequate understanding regarding Mpox among university students.

Sea urchin (Mesocentrotus nudus) is a commercially significant mariculture species, with its gonads being the exclusive edible parts for humans. Identifying sex-related genes is an effective approach for elucidating the underlying molecular mechanisms of gonad development in sea urchins. Some cytochrome P450 (CYP) superfamily members play critical roles in sex differentiation, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and ovarian steroidogenesis. In the present study, we identified 83 CYPs assigned to 17 families from the gonadal transcriptomic data of M. nudus, with most CYPs clustering within the CYP 2 family branches. Furthermore, we identified 11 gender-biased CYPs, including CYP 17A1, CYP 2, CYP 3A24, CYP 4V2, and CYP 46A1, as well as 11 CYPs related to steroid hormone biosynthesis, including CYP 1A1, CYP 1A5, CYP 3, and CYP 17A1. The expression patterns of those candidate sex-related CYP genes were also analyzed. The findings lay the foundation for further investigating the role of CYPs in the endogenous synthesis of sex steroids, offering valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying sex differentiation in sea urchins.

In sedimentary environments, those geologically reasonable models can be built according to the characterizations and mechanisms of various sedimentary processes such as sediment transport, erosion, and deposition. In this work, a 3D modeling system, RealModel, is designed and developed to construct and predicate geologically reasonable objects (sedimentary rocks) according to the geological and geometrical information acquired from the outcrops while considering only two basic sedimentary processes (deposition and erosion). The RealModel is efficient, robust, and easy-to-use. We described RealModel regarding the software architecture, and software functionalities, and verified the accuracy by modeling an application example.

Structural planes are one of the key factors controlling the stability of rock masses. A comprehensive understanding of the spatial distribution characteristics of structural planes is essential for accurately identifying key blocks, analyzing rock mass stability, and addressing various rock engineering challenges. This study compares the effectiveness of four stochastic structural plane generation methods—the Monte Carlo method, the Copula-based method, generative adversarial networks (GAN), and denoised diffusion models (DDPM)—in generating stochastic structural planes and capturing potential correlations between structural plane parameters. The Monte Carlo method employs the mean and variance of three parameters of the measured factual structural planes to generate data that follow the same distributions. The other three methods take the entire set of measured factual structural planes as the overall input to generate structural planes that exhibit the same probability distributions. Five sets of structural planes on four rock slopes in Norway are examined as an example. The validation and analysis were performed using histogram comparison, data feature comparison, scatter plot comparison, and linear regression analysis. The results show that the Monte Carlo method fails to capture the potential correlation between the dip direction and dip angle despite the best fit to the measured factual structural planes. The Copula-based method performs better with smaller datasets, and GAN and DDPM are better at capturing the correlation of measured factual structural planes in the case of large datasets. Therefore, in the case of a limited number of measured structural planes, it is advisable to employ the Copula-based method. In scenarios where the dataset is extensive, the deep generative model is recommended due to its ability to capture complex data structures. The results of this study can be utilized as a valuable point of reference for the accurate generation of stochastic structural planes within rock masses.

Surface tension and interfacial tension are crucial to the study of nanomaterials. Herein, we report a solubility method using magnesium oxide nanoparticles of different radii (1.8–105.0 nm, MgO NPs) dissolved in pure water as a targeted model; the surface tension and interfacial tension (and their temperature coefficients) were determined by measuring electrical conductivity and combined with the principle of the electrochemical equilibrium method, and the problem of particle size dependence is discussed. Encouragingly, this method can also be used to determine the ionic (atomic or molecular) radius and Tolman length of nanomaterials. This research results disclose that surface/interfacial tension and their temperature coefficients have a significant relationship with particle size. Surface/interfacial tension decreases rapidly with a radius <10 nm (while the temperature coefficients are opposite), while for a radius >10 nm, the effect is minimal. Especially, it is proven that the value of Tolman length is positive, the effect of particle size on Tolman length is consistent with the surface/interfacial tension, and the Tolman length of the bulk does not change much in the temperature range. This work initiates a new era for reliable determination of surface/interfacial tension, their temperature coefficients, ionic radius, and Tolman length of nanomaterials and provides an important theoretical basis for the development and application of various nanomaterials.
