1. Modelling chemical advection during magma ascent

Abstract

Modelling magma transport requires robust numerical schemes for chemical advection. Current numerical schemes vary in their ability to be mass conservative, computationally efficient, and accurate. This study compares four of the most commonly used numerical schemes for advection: an upwind scheme, a weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO-5) scheme, a semi-Lagrangian (SL) scheme, and a marker-in-cell (MIC) method. The behaviour of these schemes is assessed using the passive advection of two different magmatic compositions. This is coupled in 2D with the temporal evolution of a melt anomaly that generates porosity waves. All algorithms, except the upwind scheme, are able to predict the melt composition with reasonable accuracy, but none of them is fully mass conservative. However, the WENO-5 scheme shows the best mass conservation. In terms of total running time and when multithreaded, the upwind, SL, and WENO-5 schemes show similar performance, while the MIC scheme is the slowest due to reseeding and removal of markers. The WENO-5 scheme has a reasonable total run time, has the best mass conservation, is easily parallelisable, and is therefore best suited for this problem.

2. The transient thermal ageing of Eurofer 97 by mitigated plasma disruptions

Abstract

Plasma disruptions in a commercial-scale tokamak will impose high magnitude, short-duration thermal loads on its plasma-facing first wall. Despite a plethora of mitigation measures, these severe, off-normal events are likely to briefly expose the structural materials of the first wall to significant temperature excursions. Eurofer 97, the reference structural material for the plasma-facing first wall of the EU DEMO tokamak, is a reduced activation 9Cr steel with a normalised and tempered ferritic/martensitic microstructure. Repeated exposure to the thermal effects of disruptions over the operating lifetime of a reactor may promote a cumulative evolution of Eurofer 97′s microstructure, affecting key material properties crucial to first wall performance. This novel transient thermal degradation mechanism has been explored via a laser-based transient heating experiment, supported by time-dependent finite element thermal analysis studies of DEMO’s water-cooled lithium–lead first wall during a mitigated plasma disruption. Transient-affected samples of Eurofer 97 were characterised via scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques (SEM/TEM), including electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and selective area electron diffraction (SAED). Microhardness and magnetisation testing data are also presented. A single 700 °C thermal transient was found sufficient to coarsen and partially recrystallise Eurofer 97′s tempered martensite sub-grains at the tungsten-Eurofer 97 interface. Further transient exposure at 700 °C resulted in the significant growth of equiaxed grains, the nucleation of intergranular Cr-rich M7C3 and M23C6 carbides, and the coarsening of V-rich and intra-granular Ta-rich MX precipitates. The microstructural effects of 850 °C transients are also reported. Notably, after 1,000 transients at 850 °C the hardness of Eurofer 97 was found to have decreased by 32 %.

Abstract

The surface tension of monolayers with mixtures of anionic and nonionic surfactant at the liquid/vapour interface is studied. Previous works have observed that calculations of the surface tension of simple fluids show artificial oscillations for small interfacial areas, indicating that the surface tension data fluctuate due to the finite size effects and periodic boundary conditions. In the case of simulations of monolayers composed of surfactant mixtures, the surface tension not only oscillates for small areas but can also give non-physical data, such as negative values. Analysis of the monolayers with different surfactant mixtures, ionic (DTAB, CTAB, SDS) and nonionic (SB3-12), was done for density profiles, parameters of order and pair correlation functions for small and large box areas and all of them present similar behaviour. The fluctuations and the non-physical values of the surface tension are corrected when boxes with large interfacial areas are considered. The results indicate that in order to obtain reliable values of the surface tension, in computer simulations, it is important to choose not only the correct force field but also the appropriate size of the simulation box.

5. Development of a new force field for the family of primary aliphatic amines using the three steps systematic parameterization procedure

Abstract

The applicability of the three steps systematic parametrization procedure (3SSPP) to develop a force field for primary amines was evaluated in the present work. Previous simulations of primary amines show that current force fields (FF) can underestimate some experimental values under room conditions. Therefore, we propose a new set of parameters, for an united atom (UA) model, that can be used for short and long amines which predict correctly thermodynamic and dynamical properties. Following the 3SSPP methodology, the partial charges are chosen to match the experimental dielectric constant whereas the Lennard-Jones (LJ) parameters, ε and σ, are fitted to reproduce the surface tension at the vapor-liquid interface and the liquid density, respectively. Simulations were initially conducted for the propylamine molecule by introducing three different types of carbon atoms, C_α and C_β, with electric charges, and C_n, without charge. Then, modifying the charges of the carbons and using the transferable LJ parameters, the new set of constants for long amines were found. The results show good agreement for the experimental dielectric constant and mass density with a percentage error less than 1% surface tension the error is up to 4% ethylamine, the new charges were obtained from a fitting function calculated from the long amines results. For these molecules, the values of the dielectric constant and the surface tension present errors of the order of 10% with the experimental data. Miscibility of the amines was also tested with the new parameters and the results show reasonable agreement with experiments.

Abstract

We have studied the composition dependence of density of liquid water-DMSO mixtures at different temperatures by using the isobaric-isothermal (NPT) molecular dynamics computer simulations. The non-polarizable semi-flexible, P1 and P2 models for the DMSO molecule combined with the TIP4P-2005 water model are considered. The excess mixing volume and the apparent molar volumes of the species are reported. We have established that the P1-TIP4P-2005 model for the mixture provides a very good description of the location of the minimum of apparent molar volume for DMSO species indicating the anomaly. Most important is that the temperature interval where the hydrophobic effect exists, is correctly captured with this modelling, in contrast to the P2-TIP4P-2005 model.

Abstract

We have revisited the composition dependence of principal properties of liquid water-DMSO mixtures by using the isobaric-isothermal molecular dynamics computer simulations. A set of non-polarizable semi-flexible models for the DMSO molecule combined with the TIP4P-2005 and TIP4P/ε water models is considered. We restrict calculations to atmospheric pressure, 0.1013 MPa, and room temperature, 298.15 K. Composition trends of density, excess mixing volume and excess mixing enthalpy, partial molar volumes and partial molar enthalpies of species, apparent molar volumes are reported. Besides, we explore composition trends of the self-diffusion of species, the static dielectric constant and the surface tension. Evolution of the microscopic structure of the mixture with composition is analyzed in terms of radial distributions functions, coordination numbers and the fractions of hydrogen-bonded molecules. We intend to capture the peculiarities of mixing the species in the mixture upon the DMSO molar fraction and the anomalous behaviors, if manifested in each of the properties under study. The quality of several combinations of the models for species is evaluated in detail to establish the possibility of necessary improvements.

Abstract

Metallic ion adsorption on surfactant aggregates were studied with Molecular dynamics simulations. Using ionic salts, such as lead sulfate (PbSO_4) and aluminum sulfate [Al_2(SO_4)_3], adsorption of lead and aluminum were investigated at different salt concentrations and different surfactant aggregates (micelles) sizes. The micelles were constructed with spherical shapes composed of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) anionic surfactants. The electrostatic interactions between the positive ions and the negative SDS headgroups promote capture of the metal particles on the aggregate surface. Metal adsorption was analyzed in terms of radial density profiles, partial pair distribution functions and adsorption isotherms. It is showed that SDS micelles adsorb better lead than aluminum ions regardless of the size of the aggregates and salt concentrations.

Abstract

Isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics simulations are used to examine the microscopic structure and principal thermodynamic properties of a model solution consisting of NaCl salt dissolved in methanol solvent. Four united atom force fields for methanol are involved. Concerning ion solutes we used the Joung-Cheatham, Smith-Dang models as well as the model from the laboratory of Vrabec. Our principal focus is to evaluate the quality of predictions of different combinations of models for basic properties of these solutions. Specifically, we explored the change of density on molality, the structural properties in terms of various pair distribution functions, the coordination numbers, the number of ion pairs and the average number of hydrogen bonds. In addition, changes of the self-diffusion coefficients of species, the solvent dielectric constant and the evolution of the surface tension with ion concentration are described.

Abstract

Isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics simulations are used to examine the microscopic structure and some properties of water-methanol liquid mixture. The TIP4P/2005 and SPC/E water models are combined with the united atom TraPPE and the all-atom force field model for methanol. Our principal focus is to evaluate the quality of predictions of different combinations of model force fields concerning the composition dependence of basic properties of this system. Specifically, we explored the composition effects on density, excess molar volume and excess entropy, as well as on the surface tension and static dielectric constant. In addition, the structural properties are described in terms of the coordination numbers and the average number of hydrogen bonds between molecules of constituent species. Finally, the composition dependence of self-diffusion coefficients of the species is evaluated. All theoretical predictions are tested with respect to experimental data.

Isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to examine a broad set of properties of the model water-1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) mixture as a function of composition. The SPC-E and TIP4P-Ew water models and the modified TraPPE model for DME were applied. Our principal focus was to explore the trends of behaviour of the structural properties in terms of the radial distribution functions, coordination numbers and number of hydrogen bonds between molecules of different species, and of conformations of DME molecules. Thermodynamic properties, such as density, molar volume, enthalpy of mixing and heat capacity at constant pressure have been examined. Finally, the self-diffusion coefficients of species and the dielectric constant of the system were calculated and analyzed.

Abstract

Isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to examine an ample set of properties of the model water-N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) mixture as a function of composition. The SPC-E and TIP4P-Ew water models together with two united atom models for DMF [Chalaris M., Samios J., J. Chem. Phys., 2000, 112, 8581; Cordeiro J., Int. J. Quantum Chem., 1997, 65, 709] were used. Our principal analyses concern the behaviour of structural properties in terms of radial distribution functions, and the number of hydrogen bonds between molecules of different species as well as thermodynamic properties. Namely, we explore the density, excess mixing molar volume and enthalpy, the heat capacity and excess mixing heat capacity. Finally, the self-diffusion coefficients of species and the dielectric constant of the system are discussed. In addition, surface tension of water-DMF mixtures has been calculated and analyzed.

Abstract

Molecular dynamics simulations to study the behaviour of anionic (Sodium Dodecylsulfate, SDS) and nonionic (Monooleate of Sorbitan, SPAN80) surfactants close to a SiO_{2} (silicon dioxide) surface were carried out. Simulations showed that a water layer was first adsorbed on the surface and then the surfactants were attached on that layer. Moreover, it was observed that water behaviour close to the surface influenced the surfactant adsorption since a semi-spherical micelle was formed on the SiO_{2} surface with SDS molecules whereas a cylindrical micelle was formed with SPAN80 molecules. Adsorption of the micelles was conducted in terms of structural properties (density profiles and angular distributions) and dynamical behaviour (diffusion coefficients) of the systems. Finally, it was also shown that some water molecules moved inside the solid surface and located at specific sites of the solid surface.

Abstract

We have investigated thermodynamic and dynamic properties as well as the dielectric constant of water-methanol model mixtures in the entire range of composition by using constant pressure molecular dynamics simulations at ambient conditions. The SPC/E and TIP4P/Ew water models are used in combination with the OPLS united atom modelling for methanol. Changes of the average number of hydrogen bonds between particles of different species and of the fractions of differently bonded molecules are put in correspondence with the behavior of excess mixing volume and enthalpy, of self-diffusion coefficients and rotational relaxation times. From the detailed analyses of the results obtained in this work, we conclude that an improvement of the description of an ample set of properties of water-methanol mixtures can possibly be reached, if a more sophisticated, carefully parameterized, e.g., all atom, model for methanol is used. Moreover, exploration of parametrization of the methanol force field, with simultaneous application of different combination rules for methanol-water cross interactions, is required.

Abstract

We have investigated temperature trends of the microscopic structure of the SPC/E and TIP4P-Ew water models in terms of the pair distribution functions, coordination numbers, the average number of hydrogen bonds, the distribution of bonding states of a single molecule as well as the angular distribution of molecules by using the constant pressure molecular dynamics simulations. The evolution of the structure is put in correspondence with the dependence of water density on high temperatures down to the region of temperatures where the system becomes supercooled. It is shown that the fraction of molecules with three and four bonds determine the maximum density for both models. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant is obtained and analyzed.

Abstract

Sinusoids are specialized, low pressure blood vessels in the liver, bone marrow, and spleen required for definitive hematopoiesis. Unlike other blood endothelial cells (ECs), sinusoidal ECs express high levels of VEGFR3. VEGFR3 and its ligand VEGF-C are known to support lymphatic growth, but their function in sinusoidal vessels is unknown. In this study, we define a reciprocal VEGF-C/VEGFR3-CDH5 (VE-cadherin) signaling axis that controls growth of both sinusoidal and lymphatic vessels. Loss of VEGF-C or VEGFR3 resulted in cutaneous edema, reduced fetal liver size, and bloodless bone marrow due to impaired lymphatic and sinusoidal vessel growth. Mice with membrane-retained VE-cadherin conferred identical lymphatic and sinusoidal defects, suggesting that VE-cadherin opposes VEGF-C/VEGFR3 signaling. In developing mice, loss of VE-cadherin rescued defects in sinusoidal and lymphatic growth caused by loss of VEGFR3 but not loss of VEGF-C, findings explained by potentiated VEGF-C/VEGFR2 signaling in VEGFR3-deficient lymphatic ECs. Mechanistically, VEGF-C/VEGFR3 signaling induces VE-cadherin endocytosis and loss of function via SRC-mediated phosphorylation, while VE-cadherin prevents VEGFR3 endocytosis required for optimal receptor signaling. These findings establish an essential role for VEGF-C/VEGFR3 signaling during sinusoidal vascular growth, identify VE-cadherin as a powerful negative regulator of VEGF-C signaling that acts through both VEGFR3 and VEGFR2 receptors, and suggest that negative regulation of VE-cadherin is required for effective VEGF-C/VEGFR3 signaling during growth of sinusoidal and lymphatic vessels. Manipulation of this reciprocal negative regulatory mechanism, e.g. by reducing VE-cadherin function, may be used to stimulate therapeutic sinusoidal or lymphatic vessel growth.

Abstract

Sea lettuce, or Ulva spp., dominates global algal biomass and significantly contributes to “green tides.”, representing a sustainable source for biomaterials. This study explores an innovative ultrasound-enzyme assisted extraction method with the novel Cellic® CTEC3 enzyme cocktail, applied for the first time in Ulva spp. succesfully enhancing ulvan release and extraction efficiency. Various processing methods, including ultrafiltration and dialysis, were employed to achieve higher ulvan purity. Dialyzation of ulvan resulted in a more purified product with a carbohydrate content up to 55.34 %, a sulfate content up to 21 %, and no glucose contamination. Liquid extracts were fractionated through ultrafiltration, with a 3 kDa MWCO yielding 93.51 % ulvan precipitate, representing 50.28 % of the total extractable ulvan. Sequential ultrafiltration concentrated ulvans but only partially modified their molecular weight distribution. Depolymerization using microwave and H2O2 shifted ulvans towards lower molecular weights, reducing high molecular weight residue. HPSEC confirmed pH-dependent aggregation behavior, with all isolated ulvans having molecular weights above 786 kDa. Hydrolysis methods were compared, with 2-hour 1 M TFA hydrolysis at 121 °C providing the best monosaccharide profile of ulvan. FTIR and NMR analyses showed preservation of sulfation. Rheology indicated biopolymeric behavior and stable gel formation. Ulvans demonstrated nutraceutical potential, being suitable for a low Na+ and high K+ diet, with a Na+:K+ ratio as low as 0.14, and were rich in Mg2+.

Abstract

Antecedentes y Objetivos: Existe poca información sobre la evolución, complicaciones y los tratamientos recibidos por los pacientes críticos con Covid-19 que requieren ingreso en una unidad de cuidados intensivos (UCI). El objetivo de este estudio es describir la evolución clínica, los tratamientos utilizados, las complicaciones y resultados de pacientes críticos Covid-19 ingresados en siete UCIs de Anestesiología en la Región de Galicia durante el pico de la pandemia en Marzo-Abril 2020. Métodos: Entre el 21 de marzo y el 19 de abril de 2020 evaluamos todos los pacientes críticos Covid-19 ingresados en las UCIs de Anestesiología de 7 hospitales en Galicia, en el Noroeste de España. Los resultados, complicaciones y los tratamientos administrados se registraron hasta el 6 de Mayo de 2020, fecha final del seguimiento. Resultados: Un total de 97 pacientes críticos Covid-19 fueron incluidos. Durante su estancia en UCI, 80 pacientes (82,5%) necesitaron ventilación mecánica, y 22 pacientes (22,7%) traqueotomía. El decúbito prono se usó frecuentemente en pacientes intubados (67,5%) y despiertos (27,8%). Las medicaciones usadas fueron antivirales (92,7%), corticoides (93,8%), tocilizumab (57,7%), y dosis intermedias y altas de anticoagulantes (83,5%). Las complicaciones más frecuentes fueron infecciones adquiridas en UCI (52,6%), eventos trombóticos (16,5%), y reintubationes (9,3%). Tras un seguimiento medio de 42 [34-45] días, 15 pacientes fallecieron (15,5%), 73 pacientes (75,2%) habían sido dados de alta de UCI y nueve pacientes (9,3%) permanecían todavía en UCI Conclusiones: Un alto porcentaje de nuestros pacientes críticos Covid-19 requirieron ventilación mecánica, posición prona, medicaciones antivirales, corticoides y anticoagulantes. Las complicaciones en UCI fueron frecuentes, principalmente infecciones y eventos trombóticos. Tuvimos una mortalidad relativamente baja del 15,5%

Abstract

Gravitational lensing by massive galaxy clusters allows study of the population of intrinsically faint infrared galaxies that lie below the sensitivity and confusion limits of current infrared and submillimeter telescopes. We present ultra-deep PACS 100 and 160 microns observations toward the cluster lens Abell 2218, to penetrate the Herschel confusion limit. We derive source counts down to a flux density of 1 mJy at 100 microns and 2 mJy at 160 microns, aided by strong gravitational lensing. At these levels, source densities are 20 and 10 beams/source in the two bands, approaching source density confusion at 160 microns. The slope of the counts below the turnover of the Euclidean-normalized differential curve is constrained in both bands and is consistent with most of the recent backwards evolutionary models. By integrating number counts over the flux range accessed by Abell 2218 lensing (0.94-35 mJy at 100 microns and 1.47-35 mJy at 160 microns, we retrieve a cosmic infrared background (CIB) surface brightness of ~8.0 and ~9.9 nW m^-2 sr^-1, in the respective bands. These values correspond to 55% (+/- 24%) and 77% (+/- 31%) of DIRBE direct measurements. Combining Abell 2218 results with wider/shallower fields, these figures increase to 62% (+/- 25%) and 88% (+/- 32%) CIB total fractions, resolved at 100 and 160 microns, disregarding the high uncertainties of DIRBE absolute values., Accepted for publication on the A&A Herschel Special Issue, final version

Abstract

Hypoxic acute kidney injury, a major unresolved problem, initiates, or aggravates, renal functional and structural decline. There is no treatment for hypoxic acute renal injury and its sequelae. We tested the hypothesis that human kidney tubular cells, or their extracellular vesicles (exosomes), prevent renal injury when infused intravenously 24 hours after 50 minutes of bilateral renal ischemia in Nude rats. Cells and their exosomes were from harvested human kidneys declined for transplantation. Injections of either cells or exosomes, given after 24 and 48 hours of reperfusion, preserved renal function and structure in both treatment groups. However, exosomes were superior to cells; and maintained renal vascular and epithelial networks, prevented renal oxidant stress, and apoptosis; and restrained activation of pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrogenic pathways. Exosomes worked in 24 hours, consistent with functional rather than regenerative activity. Comprehensive proteomic analysis identified 6152 renal proteins from all cellular compartments; and 628 were altered by ischemia at all cell levels, while 377 were significantly improved by exosome infusions. We conclude that renal damage from severe ischemia was broad, and human renal exosomes prevented most protein alterations. Thus, exosomes seem to acutely correct a critical and consequential abnormality during reperfusion. In their absence, renal structure and cells transition to a chronic state of fibrosis and extensive renal cell loss.

Abstract

Ischemic renal injury is a complex syndrome; multiple cellular abnormalities cause accelerating cycles of inflammation, cellular damage, and sustained local ischemia. There is no single therapy that effectively resolves the renal damage after ischemia. However, infusions of normal adult rat renal cells have been a successful therapy in several rat renal failure models. The sustained broad renal benefit achieved by relatively few donor cells led to the hypothesis that extracellular vesicles (EV, largely exosomes) derived from these cells are the therapeutic effector in situ. We now show that EV from adult rat renal tubular cells significantly improved renal function when administered intravenously 24 and 48 hours after renal ischemia in rats. Additionally, EV treatment significantly improved renal tubular damage, 4-hydroxynanoneal adduct formation, neutrophil infiltration, fibrosis, and microvascular pruning. EV therapy also markedly reduced the large renal transcriptome drift observed after ischemia. These data show the potential utility of EV to limit severe renal ischemic injury after the occurrence.

Abstract

Trichoderma is a fungal genus that includes species that are currently being used as biological control agents and/or as biofertilizers. In addition to the direct application of Trichoderma spp. as biocontrol agents in plant protection, recent studies have focused on the beneficial responses exerted on plants, stimulating the growth, activating the defenses, and/or improving nutrient uptake. The amdS gene, encoding an acetamidase of Aspergillus, has been used as a selectable marker for the transformation of filamentous fungi, including Trichoderma spp., but the physiological effects of the introduction of this gene into the genome of these microorganisms still remains unexplored. No evidence of amdS orthologous genes has been detected within the Trichoderma spp. genomes and the amdS heterologous expression in Trichoderma harzianum T34 did not affect the growth of this fungus in media lacking acetamide. However, it did confer the ability for the fungus to use this amide as a nitrogen source. Although a similar antagonistic behavior was observed for T34 and amdS transformants in dual cultures against Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, and Fusarium oxysporum, a significantly higher antifungal activity was detected in amdS transformants against F. oxysporum, compared to that of T34, in membrane assays on media lacking acetamide. In Trichoderma-tomato interaction assays, amdS transformants were able to promote plant growth to a greater extent than the wild-type T34, although compared with this strain the transformants showed similar capability to colonize tomato roots. Gene expression patterns from aerial parts of 3-week-old tomato plants treated with T34 and the amdS transformants have also been investigated using GeneChip Tomato Genome Arrays. The downregulation of defense genes and the upregulation of carbon and nitrogen metabolism genes observed in the microarrays were accompanied by (i) enhanced growth, (ii) increased carbon and nitrogen levels, and (iii) a higher sensitivity to B. cinerea infections in plants treated with amdS transformants as detected in greenhouse assays. These observations suggest that the increased plant development promoted by the amdS transformants was at expense of defenses.

The product distribution upon conjugate addition of homochiral lithium N-benzyl-N-alpha-methylbenzylamide to dimethyl-(E,E)-nona-2,7-dienedioate can be controlled to give either the cyclic 1,2-anti-1,6-anti-beta-amino ester (derived from conjugate addition and intramolecular enolate cyclisation) or the acyclic bis-beta-amino ester derivative (derived from double conjugate addition) in high de. The introduction of a protected nitrogen functionality into the diester skeleton facilitates, after conjugate addition and intramolecular enolate cyclisation, the asymmetric construction of piperidines in high de; variation in the N-protecting group indicates that the highest stereoselectivity is observed with alpha-branched N-substituents. Tandem conjugate addition-aldol reactions can also be achieved stereoselectively, with lithium amide conjugate addition to epsilon- and zeta-oxo-alpha,beta-unsaturated esters giving the corresponding five and six membered cyclic beta-amino esters in high de. N-deprotection by hydrogenolysis of the products arising from these reactions furnishes a range of polyfunctionalised transpentacin and transhexacin derivatives in high de and ee.

Abstract

We exploit deep observations of the GOODS-N field taken with PACS, on board of Herschel, as part of the PEP guaranteed time, to study the link between star formation and stellar mass in galaxies to z~2. Starting from a stellar mass-selected sample of ~4500 galaxies with mag[4.5mu]10^(11) (M_sun) galaxies from z=0 to z=2, and seems to flatten at z>1.5 in this mass range. Moreover, the most massive galaxies have the lowest SSFR at any z, implying that they have formed their stars earlier and more rapidly than their low mass counterparts., Comment: Accepted for publication in the A&A Herschel Special issue

Abstract

We analyse the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (near-IR) spectral energy distribution (SED) of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs), star-forming (SF) BzK (sBzK) and UV-selected galaxies at 1.5 ≳ z ≳ 2.5 in the COSMOS, GOODS-N and GOODS-S fields. Additionally, we complement the multiwavelength coverage of the galaxies located in the GOODS fields with deep far-infrared (FIR) data taken from the GOODS-Herschel project. According to their best-fitting SED-derived properties we find that, because of their selection criterion involving UV measurements, LBGs tend to be UV-brighter and bluer and have a less prominent Balmer break (i.e. are younger) and higher dust-corrected total star-formation rate (SFR) than sBzK galaxies. In this way, sBzK galaxies represent the general population of SF galaxies at z ̃ 2 better than LBGs. In a colour-mass diagram, LBGs at z ̃ 2 are mostly located over the blue cloud, although galaxies with higher age, higher dust attenuation and redder UV continuum slope deviate to the green valley and red sequence. Furthermore, for a given stellar mass, LBGs tend to have bluer optical colours than sBzK and UV-selected galaxies. We find clean Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS: 100-or 160-μm) individual detections for a subsample of 48 LBGs, 89 sBzK and 91 UV-selected galaxies that measure their dust emission directly. Their SFRtotal = SFRUV + SFRIR cannot be recovered with the dust-correction factors derived from their continuum slope and the infrared excess (IRX)-β relations for local starbursts, similar to what happens at higher redshifts. This might have implications, for example, in the definition of the main sequence (MS) at z ̃ 2, which is sensitive to the dust-correction factors adopted. In an SFR-mass diagram, PACS-detected galaxies are located above the Daddi et al. MS and thus their star formation is probably driven by starbursts. This is in agreement with the shape of their IR SEDs. PACS-detected galaxies with redder UV continuum slope and higher stellar mass are more attenuated. We find that, for a given UV continuum slope, the dustiest galaxies at higher redshifts are more attenuated and that for a given stellar mass the dustiest galaxies at higher redshifts have stronger FIR emission. This suggests an evolution of their dust properties. However, we do not find significant evolution in the relation between dust attenuation and stellar mass with redshift, at least at z ≤ 2.5. There is a subpopulation of 17, 26 and 27 LBGs, sBzK and UV-selected galaxies, respectively, that are detected in any of the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver (SPIRE: 250-, 350-and 500-μm) bands. We speculate that this sample of SPIRE-detected LBGs is the bridging population between submillimetre galaxies and LBGs. © 2014 The Authors. Abstract

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) remains incurable and is the main cause of end‐stage renal disease. We approached the pathophysiology of DN with systems biology, and a comprehensive profile of renal transcripts was obtained with RNA‐Seq in ZS (F1 hybrids of Zucker and spontaneously hypertensive heart failure) rats, a model of diabetic nephropathy. We included sham‐operated lean control rats (LS), sham‐operated diabetic (DS), and diabetic rats with induced renal ischemia (DI). Diabetic nephropathy in DI was accelerated by the single episode of renal ischemia. This progressive renal decline was associated with renal iron accumulation, although serum and urinary iron levels were far lower in DI than in LS. Furthermore, obese/diabetic ZS rats have severe dyslipidemia, a condition that has been linked to hepatic iron overload. Hence, we tested and found that the fatty acids oleic acid and palmitate stimulated iron accumulation in renal tubular cells in vitro. Renal mRNAs encoding several key proteins that promote iron accumulation were increased in DI. Moreover, renal mRNAs encoding the antioxidant proteins superoxide dismutase, catalase, and most of the glutathione synthetic system were suppressed, which would magnify the prooxidant effects of renal iron loads. Substantial renal iron loads occur in obese/diabetic rats. We propose that in diabetes, specific renal gene activation is partly responsible for iron accumulation. This state might be further aggravated by lipid‐stimulated iron uptake. We suggest that progressive renal iron overload may further advance renal injury in obese/diabetic ZS rats.

Abstract

We set out to determine the ratio, q(IR), of rest-frame 8-1000um flux, S(IR), to monochromatic radio flux, S(1.4GHz), for galaxies selected at far-IR and radio wavelengths, to search for signs that the ratio evolves with redshift, luminosity or dust temperature, and to identify any far-IR-bright outliers - useful laboratories for exploring why the far-IR/radio correlation is generally so tight when the prevailing theory suggests variations are almost inevitable. We use flux-limited 250-um and 1.4-GHz samples, obtained in GOODS-N using Herschel (HerMES; PEP) and the VLA. We determine bolometric IR output using ten bands spanning 24-1250um, exploiting data from PACS and SPIRE, as well as Spitzer, SCUBA, AzTEC and MAMBO. We also explore the properties of an L(IR)-matched sample, designed to reveal evolution of q(IR) with z, spanning log L(IR) = 11-12 L(sun) and z=0-2, by stacking into the radio and far-IR images. For 1.4-GHz-selected galaxies, we see tentative evidence of a break in the flux ratio, q(IR), at L(1.4GHz) ~ 10^22.7 W/Hz, where AGN are starting to dominate the radio power density, and of weaker correlations with z and T(d). From our 250-um-selected sample we identify a small number of far-IR-bright outliers, and see trends of q(IR) with L(1.4GHz), L(IR), T(d) and z, noting that some of these are inter-related. For our L(IR)-matched sample, there is no evidence that q(IR) changes significantly as we move back into the epoch of galaxy formation: we find q(IR) goes as (1+z)^gamma, where gamma = -0.04 +/- 0.03 at z=0-2; however, discounting the least reliable data at z1., A&A Herschel Special Issue, in press as a Letter. 5 pages

Abstract

We report the serendipitous detection of a significant overdensity of Herschel-SPIRE 250 micron sources in the vicinity of MRC1138-26. We use an adaptive kernel density estimate to quantify the significance, including a comparison with other fields. The overdensity has a size of ~3.5-4' and stands out at ~5sigma with respect to the background estimate. No features with similar significance were found in four extragalactic control fields: GOODS-North, Lockman, COSMOS and UDS. The chance of having a similar overdensity in a field with the same number but randomly distributed sources is less than 2%. The clump is also visible as a low surface brightness feature in the Planck 857 GHz map. We detect 76 sources at 250 micron (with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 3), in a region of 4' radius; 43 of those are above a flux density limit of 20 mJy. This is a factor of 3.6 in excess over the average in the four control fields, considering only the sources above 20 mJy. We also find an excess in the number counts of sources with 250 micron flux densities between 30 and 40 mJy, compared to deep extragalactic blank-field number counts. Assuming a fixed dust temperature (30 K) and emissivity (beta=1.5) a crude, blackbody-derived redshift distribution, zBB, of the detected sources is significantly different from the distributions in the control fields and exhibits a significant peak at zBB ~ 1.5, although the actual peak redshift is highly degenerate with the temperature. We tentatively suggest, based on zBB and the similar S250/S350 colours of the sources within the peak, that a significant fraction of the sources in the clump may be at a similar redshift. Since the overdensity lies ~7' south of the z=2.16 Spiderweb protocluster MRC1138-26, an intriguing possibility (that is presently unverifiable given the data in hand) is that it lies within the same large-scale structure.(abridged), 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Characterizing the genetic programs that specify development and evolution of the cerebral cortex is a central challenge in neuroscience. Stem cells in the transient embryonic ventricular and subventricular zones generate neurons that migrate across the intermediate zone to the overlying cortical plate, where they differentiate and form the neocortex. It is clear that not one but a multitude of molecular pathways are necessary to progress through each cellular milestone, yet the underlying transcriptional programs remain unknown. Here, we apply differential transcriptome analysis on microscopically isolated cell populations, to define five transcriptional programs that represent each transient embryonic zone and the progression between these zones. The five transcriptional programs contain largely uncharacterized genes in addition to transcripts necessary for stem cell maintenance, neurogenesis, migration, and differentiation. Additionally, we found intergenic transcriptionally active regions that possibly encode unique zone-specific transcripts. Finally, we present a high-resolution transcriptome map of transient zones in the embryonic mouse forebrain.

Abstract

Deep far-infrared photometric surveys studying galaxy evolution and the nature of the cosmic infrared background are a key strength of the Herschel mission. We describe the scientific motivation for the PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP) guaranteed time key program and its role in the complement of Herschel surveys, and the field selection which includes popular multiwavelength fields such as GOODS, COSMOS, Lockman Hole, ECDFS, EGS. We provide an account of the observing strategies and data reduction methods used. An overview of first science results illustrates the potential of PEP in providing calorimetric star formation rates for high redshift galaxy populations, thus testing and superseeding previous extrapolations from other wavelengths, and enabling a wide range of galaxy evolution studies., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

The constituents of the cosmic IR background (CIB) are studied at its peak wavelengths (100 and 160 um) by exploiting Herschel/PACS observations of the GOODS-N, Lockman Hole, and COSMOS fields in the PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP) guaranteed-time survey. The GOODS-N data reach 3 sigma depths of ~3.0 mJy at 100 um and ~5.7 mJy at 160 um. At these levels, source densities are 40 and 18 beams/source, respectively, thus hitting the confusion limit at 160 um. Differential number counts extend from a few mJy up to 100-200 mJy, and are approximated as a double power law, with the break lying between 5 and 10 mJy. Abstract

We use deep observations taken with the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS), on board the Herschel satellite as part of the PACS evolutionary probe (PEP) guaranteed project along with submm ground-based observations to measure the dust mass of a sample of high-z submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). We investigate their dust content relative to their stellar and gas masses, and compare them with local star-forming galaxies. High-z SMGs are dust rich, i.e. they have higher dust-to-stellar mass ratios compared to local spiral galaxies (by a factor of 30) and also compared to local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs, by a factor of 6). This indicates that the large masses of gas typically hosted in SMGs have already been highly enriched with metals and dust. Indeed, for those SMGs whose gas mass is measured, we infer dust-to-gas ratios similar or higher than local spirals and ULIRGs. However, similarly to other strongly star-forming galaxies in the local Universe and at high-z, SMGs are characterized by gas metalicities lower (by a factor of a few) than local spirals, as inferred from their optical nebular lines, which are generally ascribed to infall of metal-poor gas. This is in contrast with the large dust content inferred from the far-IR and submm data. In short, the metalicity inferred from the dust mass is much higher (by more than an order of magnitude) than that inferred from the optical nebular lines. Abstract

In the past three decades, mounting evidence has revealed that specification of the basic cortical neuronal classes starts at the time of their final mitotic divisions in the embryonic proliferative zones. This early cell determination continues during the migration of the newborn neurons across the widening cerebral wall, and it is in the cortical plate that they attain their final positions and establish species-specific cytoarchitectonic areas. Here, the development and evolutionary expansion of the neocortex is viewed in the context of the radial unit and protomap hypotheses. A broad spectrum of findings gave insight into the pathogenesis of cortical malformations and the biological bases for the evolution of the modern human neocortex. We examine the history and evidence behind the concept of early specification of neurons and provide the latest compendium of genes and signaling molecules involved in neuronal fate determination and specification.

Abstract

The discovery that biofilms are ubiquitous among the epiphytic microflora of leaves has prompted research about the impact of biofilms on the ecology of epiphytic microorganisms and on the efficiency of strategies to manage these populations for disease control and to ensure food safety. Biofilms are likely to influence the microenvironment and phenotype of the microorganisms they harbor. However, it is also important to determine whether there are differences in the types of bacteria within biofilms compared to those outside of biofilms so as to better target microorganisms via disease control strategies. Broad-leaved endive (Cichorium endivia var. latifolia) harbors biofilms containing fluorescent pseudomonads. These bacteria can cause considerable post-harvest losses when this plant is used for manufacturing minimally processed salads. To determine whether the population structure of the fluorescent pseudomonads in biofilms is different from that outside of biofilms on the same leaves, bacteria were isolated quantitatively from the biofilm and solitary components of the epiphytic population on leaves of field-grown broad-leaved endive. Population structure was determined in terms of taxonomic identities of the bacteria isolated, in terms of genotypic profiles, and in terms of phenotypic traits related to surface colonization and biofilm formation. The results illustrate that there are no systematic differences in the composition and structure of biofilm and solitary populations of fluorescent pseudomonads, in terms of either genotypic profiles or phenotypic profiles of the strains. However, Gram-positive bacteria tended to occur more frequently within biofilms than outside of biofilms. We suggest that leaf colonization by fluorescent pseudomonads involves a flux of cells between biofilm and solitary states. This would allow bacteria to exploit the advantages of these two types of existence; biofilms would favor resistance to stressful conditions, whereas solitary cells could foster spread of bacteria to newly colonizable sites on leaves as environmental conditions fluctuate.

Abstract

Series of Molecular Dynamics simulations to study the structure of different porous matrices were investigated. Matrices were prepared by two different processes. The first method consisted of charged particles simulated at a fixed density, and after equilibration, the matrix structure was taken from the last configuration. The second method was prepared from a binary mixture of charged particles where one of the components served as the template material and the other as the matrix. The final porous matrix configuration was obtained by removing template particles from the equilibrated mixture, and therefore only the matrix particles remained in the system. The volume distribution, the cluster formation, and the porosity in the pore matrix were investigated. The present results were compared with previous results of pore matrices prepared without electrostatic interactions. Therefore, electrostatic effects were analyzed in terms of the pore matrix preparation method. As a general trend, it was observed that matrices prepared with template presented smaller voids in the structure in comparison with matrices prepared without template. It was also found that porosity was higher in matrices without template than in matrices with template. When comparisons were made between matrices with and without electrostatic interactions, the porosity was higher in matrices with charge than in matrices without charge. Finally, at low and high temperatures, the porosity values were nearly the same.

Abstract

This work deals with the study of tea stalks from pruning debris using environmental friendly extraction technology to offer new healthy properties. In the manufacturing tea industry, tea trees require to be pruned every year and most of their remains are discarded as a waste with no economic value. Microwave aqueous extraction and pressurized hot water extraction process (autohydrolysis) were used to recover bioactive compounds from the tea branches. Operating at a fixed solid: liquid ratio (1:15), the effect of the maximum heating temperatures from 140 to 220 °C was studied. Liquid extracts were analysed for total phenolic, oligosaccharides, protein, mineral and heavy metals content, as well as for antioxidant capacity. The antitumoral possibilities were also determined for selected samples. The obtained results indicated that both processes could be used as an alternative to recover bioactive compounds from tea wastes, although microwave-assisted extraction allowed saving time when compared with autohydrolysis processing. The temperature exhibited a relevant effect on the total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity, decreasing with the microwave treatment and increasing with the autohydrolysis temperature. The obtained extracts could be adequate for incorporation in food and non-food fields.

42. The Origin of Star-forming Rings in S0 Galaxies

Abstract

Spatially resolved integral field spectroscopic maps in a sample of 532 S0 galaxies from the MaNGA survey have unveiled the existence of inner rings (〈 R 〉 ∼ 1 R _e ) betraying ongoing star formation in a number of these objects. Activity gradients averaged over bins of galactocentric radius up to ∼1.5 R _e have been measured in the subspace defined by the first two principal components of the optical spectra of these galaxies. We find that the sign of the gradients is closely related to the presence of such rings in the spectral maps, which are especially conspicuous in the equivalent width of the H α emission line, EW(H α ), with a fractional abundance—21%–34%—notably larger than that inferred from optical images. While the numbers of S0s with positive, negative, and flat activity gradients are comparable, star-forming rings are largely found in objects for which quenching proceeds from the inside out, in good agreement with predictions from cosmological simulations studying S0 buildup. Assessment of these ringed structures indicates that their frequency increases with the mass of their hosts, that they have shorter lifetimes in galaxies with ongoing star formation, that they may feed on gas from the disks, and that the local environment does not play a relevant role in their formation. We conclude that the presence of inner rings in EW(H α ) is a common phenomenon in fully formed S0s, possibly associated with annular disk resonances driven by weakly disruptive mergers preferentially involving a relatively massive primary galaxy and a tiny satellite strongly bound to the former.

Among the applications of Materials Science and Engineering carried out by the Center for Technological Applications and Nuclear Development (CEADEN) / Centro de Aplicaciones Tecnológicas y Desarrollo Nuclear CEADEN is the use of various physical techniques to support the restoration and maintenance of buildings and other work objects of historical, cultural and social interest in Havana city. The field of Defectoscopy is addressed in this paper, where the applied Nondestructive testings also contributed to restore the cultural heritage, to upgrade the structural conditions at an important sport facility in Havana, and in a greater extent, to the safety of facilities of social significance, such as amusement parks. In this regard, three examples are presented: the inspection of structures during the restoration of the City Hall in the Museum of the Havana City at the Palace of Captains General; the welded joints testing during the restoration of the lighting system and the installation of the digital screen at the Latin American Stadium in Cerro municipality; and finally, the inspection systematically performed at maintenance works to critical elements and related devices at amusement parks.

Abstract

To depolymerize plant pectin, the phytopathogenic enterobacterium Erwinia chrysanthemi produces a series of enzymes which include a pectin-methyl-esterase encoded by the pem gene and five isoenzymes of pectate lyases encoded by the five genes pelA, pelB, pelC, pelD, and pelE. We have constructed transcriptional fusions between the pectinase gene promoters and the uidA gene, encoding beta-glucuronidase, to study the regulation of these E. chrysanthemi pectinase genes individually. The transcription of the pectinase genes is dependent on many environmental conditions. All the fusions were induced by pectic catabolic products and responded, to different degrees, to growth phase, catabolite repression, temperature, and nitrogen starvation. Transcription of pelA, pelD, and pelE was also increased in anaerobic growth conditions. High osmolarity of the culture medium increased expression of pelE but decreased that of pelD; the other pectinase genes were not affected. The level of expression of each gene was different. Transcription of pelA was very low under all growth conditions. The expression of the pelB, pelC, and pem genes was intermediate. The pelE gene had a high basal level of expression. Expression of pelD was generally the most affected by changes in culture conditions and showed a low basal level but very high induced levels. These differences in the expression of the pectinase genes of E. chrysanthemi 3937 presumably reflect their role during infection of plants, because the degradation of pectic polymers of the plant cell walls is the main determinant of tissue maceration caused by soft rot erwiniae.

Abstract

Background: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD–Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. Methods and results: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012–2016). Abstract

Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare type of soft tissue tumour. It has traditionally been described as a low-grade myxomatous neoplasm of the vulvovaginal, perineal and pelvic regions in women, and has a high rate of recurrence because of its infiltrative potential and locoregional extension. Its pathogenesis and histogenesis are poorly understood, but it is proposed that chromosome 12 alterations and fibroblastic/myofibroblastic tumours are involved in its origin. Around 250 cases have been reported to date in the western literature, some of them with unusual presentations. The biggest reported tumour measures 26 cm × 21 cm × 6 cm. The following article describes two case reports of this neoplasm, which were studied at Mexico's General Hospital “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga” over period of one year. Both case reports state that the tumours are considerably bigger than the ones currently reported (66 cm × 60 cm × 20 cm and 50 cm × 46 cm × 17 cm). We shall focus on histopathology and end with an analysis and discussion. Resumen: El angiomixoma profundo o agresivo es una entidad poco frecuente, agrupada dentro de las neoplasias del estroma genital. Se describe clásicamente como una neoplasia mixomatosa de bajo grado de las regiones vulvovaginal, perineal y pélvica en mujeres, con una tasa de recurrencia alta debido a su potencial de infiltración y extensión locoregional; con patogénesis e histogénesis pobremente entendidas, postulándose alteraciones en el cromosoma 12 y origen fibroblástico/miofibroblástico. La literatura occidental reporta poco más de 250 casos a la fecha, algunos de ellos con presentaciones inusuales, el caso informado de mayor tamaño es de 26 × 21 × 6 cm. A continuación se describen dos casos de dicha neoplasia estudiados en el Hospital General de México “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga”, en el periodo de un año, ambos de tamaños considerablemente mayores a los reportados actualmente (66 × 60 × 20 cm y 50 × 46 × 17 cm) y se hace enfoque en su estudio histopatológico, finalizando con un análisis y discusión sobre el tema. Abstract

The metabolic syndrome is complicated by nephropathy in humans and rats, and males are more affected than females. We hypothesized that female rats had reduced expression of glomerular oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) receptor 1 (LOX-1), attendant glomerular oxidant injury, and renal inflammation. Three groups, obese males (OM), obese females (OF), and lean males (LM) of first-generation (F(1)) hybrid rats derived from the Zucker fatty diabetic (ZDF) strain and the spontaneous hypertensive heart failure rat (SHHF/Gmi-fa) were studied from 6 to 41 weeks of age. OM had severe renal oxidant injury and renal failure. Their glomeruli expressed the LOX-1, and exhibited heavier accumulation of the lipid peroxide 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE). OM had compromised mitochondrial enzyme function, more renal fibrosis, and vascular leakage. Younger LM, OM, and OF ZS (ZDF/SHHF F(1) hybrid rat) rats, studied from 6 to 16 weeks of age, showed that unutilized renal lipids were comparable in OM and OF, although young OM had worse nephropathy and inflammation. In conclusion, glomerular LOX-1 expression is coupled to deposits of 4-HNE and glomerulosclerosis in OM. We presume that LOX-1 enhances glomerular uptake of oxidized lipids and renal inflammation, causing greater oxidant stress and severe glomerulosclerosis. In OF, renal protection from lipid oxidants appears to be conferred by blunted glomerular LOX-1 expression and renal inflammation.

Abstract

Nuestro objetivo ha sido la realización de un estudio clínico y radiológico de las secuelas en la articulación radiocubital distal en pacientes intervenidos de una extirpación aislada, total e inmediata, de cabeza radial, tras haber sufrido una fractura de tipo III y IV de Mason. Para ello hemos estudiado a 45 pacientes intervenidos en el Hospital Donostia entre los años 1988 y 2004, a los que se les ha realizado una entrevista clínica, una exploración física y radiológica del brazo intervenido, así como del contralateral para realizar el estudio comparativo. Hemos encontrado diferencias estadísticamente significativas en la medición de fuerza prensil, laterodigital y pulpar, y en la existencia de cambios degenerativos radiográficos. Observamos también disminución en los arcos de movilidad de la muñeca siendo los movimientos de supinación y extensión los más afectados (1,9º y 2,55º respectivamente de media respecto al contralateral). El valor medio de dolor en la muñeca intervenida en una escala analógica visual fue de 0,13 en reposo y 0,65 en actividad. No encontramos trastornos neurológicos, y los pacientes expresaron un alto grado de satisfacción con el resultado. Por to-do ello podemos concluir que aunque hay diferencia estadística, ésta no parece interferir en la realización de actividades de la vida diaria de nuestros pacientes ni por disminución de fuerza o movilidad ni por presencia de dolor.
