The 8π spectrometer, located at TRIUMF-ISAC, was the world’s most powerful spectrometer dedicated to β-decay studies until its decommissioning in early 2014 for replacement with the GRIFFIN array. An integral part of the 8π spectrometer was the Pentagonal Array for Conversion Electron Spectroscopy (PACES) consisting of 5 Si(Li) detectors used for charged-particle detection. PACES enabled both γ − e− and e− − e− coincidence measurements, which were crucial for increasing the sensitivity for discrete e− lines in the presence of large backgrounds. Examples from a 124Cs decay experiment, where the data were vital for the expansion of the 124Cs decay scheme, are shown. With suffcient statistics, measurements of conversion coeffcients can be used to extract the E0 components of Jπ → Jπ transitions for J ≠ 0, which is demonstrated for data obtained in 110In→110Cd decay. With knowledge of the shapes of the states involved, as obtained, for example, from the use of Kumar-Cline shape invariants, the mixing of the states can be extracted.

A program of high-precision half-life and branching-ratio measurements for superallowed Fermi β emitters is being carried out at TRIUMF’s Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) radioactive ion beam facility. Recent half-life measurements for the superallowed decays of 14O, 18Ne, and 26Alm, as well as branching-ratio measurements for 26Alm and 74Rb are reported. These results provide demanding tests of the Standard Model and the theoretical isospin symmetry breaking (ISB) corrections in superallowed Fermi β decays.

Background: The period after psychiatric hospital discharge is one of elevated risk for suicide-related behaviors (SRBs). Post-discharge clinical outreach, although potentially effective in preventing SRBs, would be more cost-effective if targeted at high-risk patients. To this end, a machine learning model was developed to predict post-discharge suicides among Veterans Health Administration (VHA) psychiatric inpatients and target a high-risk preventive intervention., Methods: The Veterans Coordinated Community Care (3C) Study is a multicenter randomized controlled trial using this model to identify high-risk VHA psychiatric inpatients (n = 850) randomized with equal allocation to either the Coping Long Term with Active Suicide Program (CLASP) post-discharge clinical outreach intervention or treatment-as-usual (TAU). The primary outcome is SRBs over a 6-month follow-up. We will estimate average treatment effects adjusted for loss to follow-up and investigate the possibility of heterogeneity of treatment effects., Results: Recruitment is underway and will end September 2024. Mobile crisis teams (MCTs) deploy clinicians to assist individuals in acute crisis in the community. Little is known about the extent to which these teams provide evidence-based practices (EBPs) for suicide prevention nor the barriers they face. We surveyed 120 MCT clinicians across the United States about their: (1) use of suicide risk screening and assessment tools; (2) strategies used to address suicide risk (both EBPs and non-EBPs); and (3) perceived barriers to high-quality MCT services. Nearly all clinicians reported use of validated suicide screening tools and generic "safety planning." However, a sizeable minority also reported use of non-EBPs. Open-ended responses suggested many client/family-, clinician-, and systems-level barriers to MCT use of EBPs for suicide prevention. We identified several targets for future implementation efforts, including the need for de-implementation strategies to reduce use of ineffective and potentially harmful practices, and unique aspects of MCTs that require tailored implementation supports., (© 2023. Research has demonstrated robust links between adolescent stress and serious psychological problems. The current study aimed to identify latent stress profiles of 1510 adolescents (59.7% females; M age  = 16.77 years, SD = 0.86) based on five stresses (parental stresses, family environment stresses, academic stresses, teacher stresses, and peer stresses) at three time points (T1/2/3). Moreover, this study would investigate the transition patterns of these profiles over time and examine the associations between the profiles and adverse psychological symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression, nonsuicidal self-injury [NSSI], and suicidal ideation). Three latent stress profiles were identified, including High-stress profile, Medium-stress profile, and Low-stress profile. The three profiles were significantly different on the levels of T1/2/3 anxiety, depression, NSSI, and suicidal ideation. The profile memberships remained relatively stable across three time points. Notably, the present study found gender differences, with boys were more likely to be in the High-stress profile and to transition from the Medium- to the High-stress profile, compared to girls. Furthermore, left-behind adolescents were more likely to be in the High-stress profile than non-left-behind adolescents. The findings highlight the importance of adopting 'this-approach-fits-this-profile' interventions for adolescents. The β decay of 112Ag has been used to populate spin 0+ and 2+ states in 112Cd to 3 MeV excitation energy. The statistical quality obtained allows the extraction of very weak γ-ray branching ratios that, combined with known level lifetimes, enables the determination of the B(E2) values or upper limits for transitions populating the proposed two-phonon states. While candidates for 3+, 4+, and 6+ three-phonon levels have been identified, there are no candidates for the 0+ and 2+ three phonon levels, and the upper limits of the B(E2) values indicate that phonon E2 strength is not fragmented, but absent below 5ħω2. The radioactive beam laboratory at TRIUMF is currently the highest power ISOL facility in the world. Taking advantage of the high-intensity beams, major programs in nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure, and weak interaction studies have begun. The low-energy area, ISAC-I, is capable of delivering beams up to mass 30 at ≈ 1.7MeV/u or 60 keV up to the mass of the primary target, whereas ISAC-II will ultimately provide beams up to mass 150 and ≈ 6.5MeV/u. Major γ-ray spectrometers for nuclear structure research consist of the 8π spectrometer at ISAC-I, and the TIGRESS spectrometer now being constructed for ISAC-II. Results from recent experiments investigating the β-decay of nuclei near N = 90 and Coulomb excitation of 20,21Na are presented that highlight the capabilities of the spectrometers. Purpose: American Community colleges are vital to the country's economic mobility and are leaders in developing and facilitating career, technical, and workforce education. This study explored employer perspectives on employees' common and specialized skills across industries in the United States. Design/methodology/approach: Employers were profiled for one year using a case study and content analysis method. They submitted performance records for at least three employees who graduated from community college career, technical, or workforce programs. Findings: Data revealed that overall, employees were successful at work, but employers focused on employability skills across disciplines (common skills); specialized skills employers focused on were associated with business operations and processes and seemed to be something other than industry-specific technical knowledge. Originality/value: This article and the research it refers to constitute original work that has not been reproduced or published. Background: Many universities in Canada offer experiential education (EE) opportunities for students that are both field-based and on-campus. Despite a commitment to EE, there is a paucity of information about various stakeholder perspectives of EE and the equity implications of the different approaches to EE. Furthermore, it is unclear how EE programs at universities changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions. Purpose: This study aims to explore stakeholder perspectives of EE experiences and understand the shifts to EE, perhaps towards more equitable and accessible EE opportunities, prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology/Approach: We used an exploratory case study approach involving a survey with university students, interviews with university instructors and community organizations, and a document review, to understand stakeholder perspectives and shifts to EE due to COVID-19. Findings/Conclusions: Findings suggest that there are consistent benefits of EE, and barriers to EE, across student, instructor, and organization perspectives, where learning from changes prompted by the pandemic could be beneficial to increase equity in EE. Implications: We recommend that instructors and institutions continue to work in partnership with students and community organizations to build virtual, on-campus, and local field-based EE (FBEE) opportunities that aim to increase equitable access and impact. This systematic review includes 125 peer-reviewed education-research articles that employ a LatCrit framework (from a search including articles published from 1995 to 2020). The author examines how the literature utilizes LatCrit and advances ideas about race, Latinxs, and Latinidad in education. The author presents significant patterns and divergences in the literature's strengths, challenges, and tensions. Some strengths include detailing Latinxs' experiences and valuing experiential knowledge. The author problematizes four research practices: (1) describing LatCrit with select tenets of CRT; (2) not defining race or other relevant concepts (language, culture, etc.); (3) claiming Latinxs are unique because of their multidimensionality; and (4) exceeding LatCrit's scope by rationalizing the study's use of LatCrit because its participants are Latinxs. The author argues that these complications lead to a paradox: even though LatCrit emerges from critical race theory and is described as for Latinxs, the literature largely undertheorizes race and lacks clarity about conceptualizing Latinxs as a racialized group. Prior literature suggests that stress exposure is associated with elevated rates of depressive symptoms in African American adolescents. However, there is substantial within-group variability which may be attributable to differences in adolescents' individual characteristics (e.g., self-esteem, coping styles), and interpersonal experiences (e.g., peer support). The current study first examined whether active coping, perceived peer support, self-esteem, and stress were associated with depressive symptoms. Then, drawing from the diathesis-stress, transactional stress, and stress-buffering models, we examined whether the effects of stress on depressive symptoms were moderated by self-esteem, active coping, and perceived peer support. Using a sample of African American adolescents (n = 1,163; mean age = 13 years old; 54.2% girls), we found that active coping and stress were positively associated with depressive symptoms in contrast to self-esteem and perceived peer support. Interaction results suggested that active coping and self-esteem moderated the effects of stress on depressive symptoms. Implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The physiological consequences of drinking ethanol differ among men and women; however, the biological basis of this gender difference is unknown. Our study characterized sex-related blood ethanol concentration (BEC) 60 min postethanol administration and ethanol elimination rates in male and female monkeys and across the phases of the menstrual cycle. Subjects were male ( n= 4) and female ( n= 4) cynomolgus monkeys ( Macaca fascicularis) with a history of ethanol exposure and maintained at a lean body weight by food restriction. On three separate occasions, each monkey was administered 1.0 g/kg ethanol intragastrically and blood samples (20 μl) were collected every 60 min over a 5-hr period. For females, three phases of the menstrual cycle were determined by the presence of menses and plasma progesterone levels. There was no effect of menstrual cycle on mean 60 min BECs or mean rates of elimination. Mean BECs 60 min after 1.0 g/kg ethanol were: males = 86 mg/dl (± 2; n= 4) and females = 82 mg/dl (± 5; n= 4). There was no effect of sex on the highest BEC measured, which occurred at the 60 min time point in all subjects. Female monkeys did have faster average rates of ethanol elimination [34 ± 2 (mg/dl)/hr] compared with males [23 ± 1 (mg/dl)/hr). The sex differences in metabolism of ethanol found with the macaque monkey model correlates well with human subject studies and suggests this is an appropriate model to further explore gender differences in response to ethanol. Peptoids, or poly(N-substituted glycine)s, hold great promise in biomedical applications because of their biocompatibility, precise synthesis via conventional peptide-mimicking methods, and readily tunable side chains, which facilitate the control of hydrophobicity and crystallinity. In the past decade, peptoids have been used to create well-defined self-assemblies such as vesicles, micelles, sheets, and tubes, which have been scrutinized at the atomic scale using cutting-edge analytical techniques. This review highlights recent advancements in peptoid synthesis strategies and the development of noteworthy one- or two-dimensional anisotropic self-assemblies, i. e., nanotubes and nanosheets, exhibiting well-ordered molecular arrangements. These anisotropic self-assemblies are formed through the crystallization of peptoid side chains, which can be effortlessly modified via simple synthesis approaches. Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a genetic cause of intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder. The mesocorticolimbic system, which includes the prefrontal cortex (PFC), basolateral amygdala (BLA), and nucleus accumbens core (NAcC), is essential for regulating socioemotional behaviors. We employed optogenetics to compare the functional properties of the BLA→NAcC, PFC→NAcC, and reciprocal PFC↔BLA pathways in Fmr1−/y::Drd1a-tdTomato male mice. In FXS mice, the PFC↔BLA reciprocal pathway was unaffected, while significant synaptic modifications occurred in the BLA/PFC→NAcC pathways. We observed distinct changes in D1 striatal projection neurons (SPNs) and separate modifications in D2 SPNs. In FXS mice, the BLA/PFC→NAcC-D2 SPN pathways demonstrated heightened synaptic strength. Focusing on the BLA→NAcC pathway, linked to autistic symptoms, we found increased AMPAR and NMDAR currents and elevated spine density in D2 SPNs. Conversely, the amplified firing probability of BLA→NAcCD1 SPNs was not accompanied by increased synaptic strength, AMPAR and NMDAR currents, or spine density. These pathway-specific alterations resulted in an overall enhancement of excitatory-to-spike coupling, a physiologically relevant index of how efficiently excitatory inputs drive neuronal firing, in both BLA→NAcC-D1 and BLA→NAcC-D2 pathways. Finally, the absence of fragile Xmessenger ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMRP) led to impaired long-term depression specifically in BLA→D1 SPNs. These distinct alterations in synaptic transmission and plasticity within circuits targeting the NAcC highlight the potential role of postsynaptic mechanisms in selected SPNs in the observed circuit-level changes. Fibrocartilaginous entheses consist of tendons, unmineralized and mineralized fibrocartilage, and subchondral bone, each exhibiting varying stiffness. Here we examined the functional role of sclerostin, expressed in mature mineralized fibrochondrocytes. Following rapid mineralization of unmineralized fibrocartilage and concurrent replacement of epiphyseal hyaline cartilage by bone, unmineralized fibrocartilage reexpanded after a decline in alkaline phosphatase activity at the mineralization front. Sclerostin was co-expressed with osteocalcin at the base of mineralized fibrocartilage adjacent to subchondral bone. In Scx-deficient mice with less mechanical loading due to defects of the Achilles tendon, sclerostin+ fibrochondrocyte count significantly decreased in the defective enthesis where chondrocyte maturation was markedly impaired in both fibrocartilage and hyaline cartilage. Loss of the Sost gene, encoding sclerostin, elevated mineral density in mineralized zones of fibrocartilaginous entheses. Atomic force microscopy analysis revealed increased fibrocartilage stiffness. These lines of evidence suggest that sclerostin in mature mineralized fibrochondrocytes acts as a modulator for mechanical tissue integrity of fibrocartilaginous entheses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGF-β) cascade plays a critical role in insect metamorphosis and involves cell-surface receptors known as type I and II, respectively (TβRI and TβRII). In Drosophila melanogaster, the TβRI receptor, Baboon (Babo), consists of three variants (BaboA, BaboB, and BaboC), each with isoform-specific functions. However, the isoforms and functional specifications of Babo in non-Drosophilid insects have not been established. Here, we examined babo transcripts from seven coleopteran species whose genomes have been published and found that mutually exclusive alternative splicing of the third exon produces three babo isoforms, identical to the Drosophila babo gene. The same three transcript variants were accordingly recognized from the transcriptome data of a coleopteran Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata. RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated knockdown of all three babo transcripts at the fourth-instar larval stage hindered gut modeling and arrested larval development in H. vigintioctopunctata. All the resultant larvae became arrested prepupae; they were gradually dried and darkened and, eventually, died. Depletion of HvbaboA rather than HvbaboB or HvbaboC is similar to the phenotypic alterations caused by simultaneous RNAi of all three babo isoforms. Therefore, our results established diverged roles of the three Babo isoforms and highlighted the regulatory role of BaboA during larval-pupal transition in a non-Drosophilid insect species. The Indonesian language learning method at Junior High School (SMP) Negeri Padangpanjang was generally boring and traditional. A solution is required to create products that are successful, efficient and enjoyable to use in classroom learning activities. A solution is required to make goods that are effective, efficient and entertaining to use in classroom learning activities. The product trial took place at SMP Negeri 3 Padangpanjang. The 4-D development phase was done in this study. During the conceptualization and development phases of this study, junior high school teachers and students were involved. In addition, experts participate in the process of evaluating products. A variety of methods are used including tests, questionnaires, observations and interviews. The main syntax of OMEMPAT is created by the descriptive text mapping learning model with the help of poetry text such as (1) orientation (2) reading and listening to poetry (3) mapping the contents of the descriptive text (4) presenting the results of the descriptive text mapping and (5) reflecting on the learning process. The three criteria of validity, practicability and efficacy were used to assess the quality of the learning model. The descriptive text mapping learning model which is supported by poetry texts needs to be put into practice. Ultrasmall metal nanoclusters (NCs) exhibit a quantized conduction band, hence, a distinct HOMO‐LUMO gap (Eg). Such a quantized electronic structure gives rise to multiple discrete peaks in the optical absorption spectrum of the NCs. As the size grows to 130 gold atoms (Au130 protected by ligands), electrical charging and optical behaviors seem to show certain metal‐like features (hence, transition‐sizes). To probe such behaviors, especially the potential ligand effect, we have devised the synthesis of Au130 NCs protected by phenylethanethiolate and naphthalenethiolate, respectively, with the former having a nonconjugated separation between the aromatic molecular group and the metal core while the latter being in direct bonding. A careful comparison of these two Au130 nanoclusters with the earlier reported analogues is carried out, including the structurally characterized Au130(pMBT)50 and the aqueous counterpart. While all of these nanoclusters possess the same 80 free electron counts in the core, some notable differences in electrochemical and optical properties are found, which are attributed to the ligand effects. Objective: The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of transdiagnostic child therapy with and without maternal acceptance and commitment intervention on anxiety and depression in anxious children and obsessive thoughts related to COVID-19 in mothers with corona anxiety. Methods and Materials: The method of this research was a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test-post-test (two experimental groups and one control group) along with a two-month follow-up period. The population included all anxious elementary school students in the second half of the year 2021-2022 in districts 1 and 2 of Sari city whose mothers also had corona anxiety. Transdiagnostic childparent centered intervention combined with acceptance and commitment therapy for the parent was applied in the first group, and transdiagnostic child-parent centered intervention without acceptance and commitment therapy for the parent in the second experimental group, while the control group received no intervention. Sixty participants were selected through purposive sampling. They were then randomly assigned into 3 groups (Group 1; transdiagnostic child-parent centered intervention with parental acceptance and commitment intervention (20 participants), Group 2; transdiagnostic child-centered intervention without parental acceptance and commitment intervention (20 participants), and Group 3; as the control group (20 participants)). For data collection, depression and anxiety questionnaires were used for children, and a practical obsessive-compulsive questionnaire with COVID-19 was used for mothers. For the implementation of interventions, Ehrenreich-May et al.'s (2019) transdiagnostic intervention (12 90- minute group sessions twice a week), and Eifert et al.'s (2017) acceptance and commitment therapy (12 90-minute group sessions twice a week) were utilized. For data analysis, repeated measures ANOVA with SPSS software, version 26 was used. Findings: The results of the repeated measures ANOVA regarding the children showed that the effectiveness of transdiagnostic child therapy combined with maternal acceptance and commitment intervention was significantly greater than transdiagnostic child therapy without acceptance and commitment intervention for the mother, in terms of anxiety and depression. Although anxiety and depression decreased in both experimental groups and were stable over time. The results of the repeated measures ANOVA regarding mothers showed that there was no significant difference in the effectiveness of transdiagnostic child therapy combined with maternal acceptance and commitment intervention with transdiagnostic child therapy without acceptance and commitment intervention for the mother regarding obsessive thoughts, although both interventions showed significant effectiveness over time. Conclusion: Therefore, it is recommended that therapists and counselors use this treatment in conjunction with other therapeutic interventions to improve the interaction between children and parents. This article explores the complexity and challenges of making decisions regarding which theories and social categories (e.g. race, class) should be emphasized in justice-centered research that includes participants' identities as key variables in the design. Drawing on theories of intersectionality, agential realism, and complexity, the author proposes four intersectional design dimensions to help justice-centered researchers honor complexity: reflection on self and purpose; making agential cuts; complexifying social categories; and intersectional and collaborative re-view. Each dimension is illustrated with theory and empirical examples, mostly drawing from the field of educational research. By attending to and continually revisiting agential cuts related to social categories in conversation with community members, researchers can better represent layered, complex, and changing phenomena. Preeclampsia (PE) is a complex pregnancy-related disorder characterized by hypertension, followed by organ dysfunction and uteroplacental abnormalities. It remains a major cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although the pathophysiology of PE has not been fully elucidated, a two-stage model has been proposed. In this model, a poorly perfused placenta releases various factors into the maternal circulation during the first stage, including pro-inflammatory cytokines, anti-angiogenic factors, and damage-associated molecular patterns into the maternal circulation. In the second stage, these factors lead to a systemic vascular dysfunction with consecutive clinical maternal and/or fetal manifestations. Despite advances in feto-maternal management, effective prophylactic and therapeutic options for PE are still lacking. Since termination of pregnancy is the only curative therapy, regardless of gestational age, new treatment/prophylactic options are urgently needed. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is mainly used to treat malaria as well as certain autoimmune conditions such as systemic lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. The exact mechanism of action of HCQ is not fully understood, but several mechanisms of action have been proposed based on its pharmacological properties. Interestingly, many of them might counteract the proposed processes involved in the development of PE. Therefore, based on a literature review, we aimed to investigate the interrelated biological processes of HCQ and PE and to identify potential molecular targets in these processes. Objective: The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (ITS) implicates thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness as casually related to suicide desire. The self-report Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ) is the most commonly used measure to assess belongingness and burdensomeness, including in youth. No parent-report version of the INQ exists. The current study adapted the ten-item version of the INQ (INQ-10) for parent report of youth belongingness and burdensomeness, thereby moving ITS research in youth to a multi-informant measurement approach, and examined its factor structure and convergent and concurrent validity., Methods: Participants were 168 clinic-referred youths ages 9-17 years (58.9% female; M age  = 11.91) and their parents., Results: Findings supported a two-factor structure of the parent INQ. In support of convergent and concurrent validity, parent-reported belongingness and burdensomeness were significantly associated with youth-reported belongingness and burdensomeness, suicide ideation, anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, and impairment., Conclusions: The current study provides initial support the INQ-parent version as a valid measure to complement youth self-reports of belongingness and burdensomeness., (© 2022 The American Association of Suicidology.)

The K-16 education movement broadly includes efforts to streamline educational pathways across K-12 and higher academic and other systems to enhance adult and career readiness and address inequitable opportunities and resources faced by many vulnerable students. The movement remains largely aspirational, however, with little consensus and few tenets available to guide K-16 program development and evaluation. This article presents a preliminary scoping review of several major student themes that crosscut K-12 and higher education systems and that could inform K-16 education initiatives. These themes include student progression and completion; student engagement; student mental health; and student demographic and generational characteristics. Each theme is explored with respect to commonalities across K-12 and higher education systems. Examples include risk/protective factors, ecological levels, barriers, sophisticated data analysis, intervention, school climate, belongingness, student-teacher interactions, academic warning signs, tiered/stepped care models, and demographic and generational changes. A key underlying thesis throughout the article is movement toward a dimensional perspective that considers student development, support needs, learning strategies, and other domains along an educational spectrum rather than as distinct K-12 and higher education categories. This qualitative study explores how five transgender Xhosa women navigate identity negotiations and cultural belonging within the profoundly genderregulating ritual of ulwaluko KwaXhosa, male initiation to manhood. Data generation employed semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. Despite acute violence enforcing masculine heteronormativity, findings reveal remarkable resilience as participants subtly expand gender pluralisms during the ritual through quiet defiance and feminine self-expression. Their profound liminality reveals fluidity within the ritual space. Analysing lived negotiations at the crossing lines of cisheteropatriarchy complicates Western gender theory and signals possibilities for radically inclusive African epistemologies recognising pre-colonial legacies of fluid gender diversity. Findings recommend that cultural gatekeepers foster compassionate pluralism and collective courage to transform exclusionary rituals towards radical inclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Empirically supported suicide risk assessment and conceptualization is a central aim of the Zero Suicide model. The Suicide Status Form (SSF) is the essential document and scaffolding of the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality-Brief Intervention (CAMS-BI) and is hypothesized as an example of a psychological assessment as therapeutic intervention (PATI). However, this hypothesis has never been directly tested., Methods: N = 57 patients deemed at risk for outpatient suicidal behavior and treated as part of an inpatient psychiatric consultation and liaison service were recruited to participate in CAMS-BI at a Level 1 trauma center in the southeastern United States. During the CAMS-BI process, patients were asked to rate their subjective units of distress (SUDS) at five time points throughout the intervention (k = 285)., Results: The omnibus random intercept multilevel model revealed a significant difference in pre- to post-session ratings of SUDS across patients. Post hoc pairwise comparisons revealed no significant differences between SSF sections (e.g., Section A, Section B, and Section C) and relative reductions in SUDS; however, there was an observable trend toward a favorable effect of Section A of the SSF., Conclusions: The SSF may represent an example of PATI pending replication and extension of the current results., (© 2024 American Association of Suicidology.)

We examined the perspectives of the Red River Métis citizens in Manitoba, Canada, during the H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics and how they interpreted the communication of government/health authorities' risk management decisions. For Indigenous populations, pandemic response strategies play out within the context of ongoing colonial relationships with government institutions characterized by significant distrust. A crucial difference between the two pandemics was that the Métis in Manitoba were prioritized for early vaccine access during H1N1 but not for COVID-19. Data collection involved 17 focus groups with Métis citizens following the H1N1 outbreak and 17 focus groups during the COVID-19 pandemic. Métis prioritization during H1N1 was met with some apprehension and fear that Indigenous Peoples were vaccine-safety test subjects before population-wide distribution occurred. By contrast, as one of Canada's three recognized Indigenous nations, the non-prioritization of the Métis during COVID-19 was viewed as an egregious sign of disrespect and indifference. Our research demonstrates that both reactions were situated within claims that the government does not care about the Métis, referencing past and ongoing colonial motivations. Government and health institutions must anticipate this overarching colonial context when making and communicating risk management decisions with Indigenous Peoples. In this vein, government authorities must work toward a praxis of decolonization in these relationships, including, for example, working in partnership with Indigenous nations to engage in collaborative risk mitigation and communication that meets the unique needs of Indigenous populations and limits the potential for less benign-though understandable-interpretations., (© 2024 The Authors.
