This study investigated the effects of different planes of nutrition in early pregnancy (EP) and mid-pregnancy (MP) of crossbred ewes on carcass characteristics of male offspring and reproductive performance of female offspring. During EP (d 1 to 39 after synchronized mating) ewes were allocated 60% (low, L-EP), 100% (medium, M-EP), or 200% (high, H-EP) of their energy requirements for maintenance. Between d 40 and 90 (MP), ewes were then allocated 80% (MMP) or 140% (H-MP) of their maintenance energy requirement. After d 90, all ewes were fed to fully meet energy requirements for late pregnancy. Male offspring (n = 83) were reared on a grass-based system and slaughtered at 42, 46, or 50 kg of BW. Female offspring (n = 60) were reared on a grass-based system, mated at 8 too, and performance recorded until weaning of their first lamb crop. Concentrations of leptin, an adiposity indicator, in female offspring varied with the plane of maternal nutrition in early pregnancy. The L-EP offspring had greater leptin concentrations than H-EP offspring (P = 0.04), with M-EP offspring showing intermediate concentrations. Reproductive performance of female offspring was not affected by maternal plane of nutrition (P [greater than or equal to] 0.16). Female H-EP offspring gave birth to heavier lambs (generation 2 offspring) than M-EP (P = 0.006) with L-EP offspring intermediate. Male offspring of L-EP dams showed a trend toward poorer carcass conformation (P = 0.06) and increased fat classification (P = 0.07), consistent with increased fat depths over the loin (P = 0.02). There was a significant interaction between plane of nutrition in early pregnancy and mid-pregnancy for female offspring BW at 2 mo postmating and 16 wk postlambing (P [greater than or equal to] 0.04), and for male offspring perinephric and retroperitoneal fat and tissue depth (P [greater than or equal to] 0.02). For dams offered diet L-EP during early pregnancy, diet H-MP gave heavier offspring with more perinephric and retroperitoneal fat. In contrast, for dams offered diet H-EP during EP, diet M-MP gave offspring that were heavier or fatter or both. Maintenance level of nutrition in EP followed by M-MP or H-MP treatments resulted in offspring intermediate in fatness and BW. The data indicate that adaptations in EP and MP to compensate for nutritional deprivation or nutritional excess can alter the BW, adiposity, conformation, and leptin concentrations of offspring. The repellent effects of garlic oil to Lycoriella ingenua and Megaselia halterata were examined in static olfactometers. In a choice between treated and control glass beads, adult female M. halterata were repelled by garlic solutions at concentration levels as low as 0.1% (v/v). When provided with a choice between compost treated with a range of garlic concentrations (0.1–20%) adult female M. halterata demonstrated a clear preference for untreated compost. In contrast, olfactometer studies involving L. ingenua females were inconsistent. For L. ingenua , the highest concentration of garlic oil (20%) significantly reduced subsequent adult emergence from treated spawned compost. With increasing concentrations of garlic oil, M. halterata emergence was progressively reduced. For both pest species, application of garlic oil post-oviposition had no significant effect on subsequent survival of immature life stages and surprisingly enhanced final emergence. A case-control study of the management and disease risk factors associated with toxic mastitis in cows was carried out. Seventy-one cases satisfied all the selection criteria, and a subset of 41 cases in which pure growths of Escherichia coil were cultured from milk samples was also investigated. Conditional multiple logistic regression analysis of the 71 cases and matched controls revealed no statistically significant associations. However, among the subset of 41 cases and matched controls, the administration of calcium parenterally at calving (P<0·01) and assistance at calving (P<0·01) were both associated with toxic mastiffs. Controlling for assistance at calving, the odds of a cow developing E colitoxic mastiffs if it had received calcium parenterally at calving were 23 times higher than for a cow that had not received calcium. Similarly, controlling for the administration of calcium at calving, the odds of a cow developing E coil toxic mastitis if it had received assistance at calving were 11 times higher than for a cow that did not receive assistance. • Straw inclusion in dairy cow diets had no effect on performance or digestibility. • High-starch concentrate increased dry matter intakes and milk protein content. • High-fibre concentrates reduced dry matter intakes without improving digestibility. A three-period change-over design study using 24 mid-lactation multiparous Holstein-Friesian dairy cows, examined supplementation strategies for a high quality grass silage (dry matter (DM), 418 g/kg; crude protein (CP), 170 g/kg DM; metabolisable energy (ME), 12.1 MJ/kg DM). Four treatments, in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, compared concentrate type (High-starch or High-fibre) and straw inclusion (Straw or No-straw). Concentrates had a starch and neutral detergent fibre content of 373 and 258 g/kg DM, respectively (High-starch), and 237 and 339 g/kg DM, respectively (High-fibre). In the No-straw treatments, silage and concentrates were offered as a total mixed ration in a 57:43 DM ratio. In the Straw treatments, chopped straw was added at 4% of total DM, replacing part of the silage component of the diet. Following this study, the effect of diet on nutrient utilisation efficiency was examined using four cows/treatment. There were no interactions between concentrate type and straw inclusion for any cow performance or digestibility parameters. Silage dry matter intake (DMI) and total DMI were reduced with the High-fibre concentrate (P = 0.001 and P = 0.006, respectively) and straw inclusion (P < 0.001 and P = 0.014, respectively). Neither concentrate type nor straw inclusion had a significant effect on milk yield or milk fat content. The High-starch concentrate increased milk protein content (P < 0.001), while straw inclusion decreased milk protein content (P = 0.036). Treatment had no effect on cow body weight, condition score, faecal scores, digestibility coefficients or nitrogen and energy utilisation efficiency. In conclusion, supplementing a high quality grass silage with a carefully formulated 'high starch' concentrate improved DMI and milk protein content with no adverse effects on cow performance. A diverse range of grassland-based milk production systems are practiced on dairy farms in temperate regions, with systems differing in relation to the proportion of grazed grass, conserved forages and concentrates in diet, calving season, duration of housing, cow genotype, and performance levels. The current study was conducted to examine performance within diverse grassland-based systems of milk production under experimental conditions. This study examined 4 milk production systems over 3 successive lactations (20 cows per system during each lactation). With winter calving-fully housed (WC-FH), Holstein cows were housed for the entire lactation and offered a complete diet consisting of grass silage, maize silage, and concentrates [approximately 50% forage on a dry matter (DM) basis]. With winter calving-conventional (WC-Con), Holstein cows were housed and offered the same diet from calving until turnout (late March) as offered with WC-FH, and thereafter cows were given access to grazing and supplemented with 5.0 kg of concentrate/cow daily. Two spring-calving systems were examined, the former involving Holstein cows (SC-H) and the latter Jersey × Holstein crossbred cows (SC-J×H). Cows on these systems were offered a grass silage-concentrate mix (70% forage on a DM basis) until turnout (late February), and thereafter cows were given access to grazing supplemented with 1.0 kg of concentrate/cow per day. The contributions of concentrates (3,080, 2,175, 722, and 760 kg of DM/cow per lactation), conserved forages (3,199, 1,556, 1,053, and 1,066 kg of DM/cow per lactation), and grazed grass (0, 2,041, 2,788, and 2,692 kg of DM/cow per lactation) to total DMI (6,362, 5,763, 4,563, and 4,473 kg of DM/cow per lactation) with WC-FH, WC-Con, SC-H, and SC-J×H, respectively, varied considerably. Similarly, milk yield (9,333, 8,443, 6,464, and 6,049 kg/cow per lactation), milk fat content (44.9, 43.3, 42.8, and 49.0 g/kg), and milk protein content (34.6, 34.9, 33.6, and 36.3 g/kg) differed between systems (WC-FH, WC-Con, SC-H, and SC-J×H, respectively). The higher milk yields with the WC systems reflect the greater concentrate inputs with these systems, whereas the greater milk fat and protein content with SC-J×H reflect the use of Jersey crossbred cows. Crossbred cows on SC-J×H produced a similar yield of milk solids as Holstein cows on SC-H. Cows on WC-FH ended the lactation with a greater body weight (BW) and body condition score than cows on any other treatment. While Jersey crossbred cows on SC-J×H had a lower BW than Holstein cows on SC-H, cows on these 2 systems were not different for any of the other BW, body condition score, or blood metabolite parameters examined. Cows on WC-FH had a greater interval from calving to conception, a greater mastitis incidence, and a greater locomotion score than cows on the spring calving systems. Whole-system stocking rates and annual milk outputs were calculated as 2.99, 2.62, 2.48, and 2.50 cows/ha, and 25,706, 20,822, 15,289, and 14,564 kg of milk/ha, with each of WC-FH, WC-Con, SC-H, and SC-J×H, respectively. Gross margin per cow was highest with WC-Con, gross margin per hectare was highest with WC-FH, and gross margin per kilogram of milk was highest with SC-J×H. The European livestock sector has a significant deficit of high-quality protein feed ingredients. Consequently there is interest in using locally grown protein grain crops to partially or completely replace imported protein feeds in dairy cow rations. Field bean (FB; Vicia faba) has been identified as a locally grown crop with significant potential. The current study was designed to examine the effects of FB on cow performance and nutrient utilization in the diet of early-lactation dairy cows, including high levels of FB (up to 8.4 kg/cow per day). The experiment used 72 dairy cows in a 3-treatment continuous design (from calving until wk 20 of lactation). All cows were given ad libitum access to a mixed ration comprising grass silage and concentrates [45:55 on a dry matter (DM) basis]. Concentrates offered contained either 0, 349, or 698 g of FB/kg of concentrate (treatments FB0, FB-Low, and FB-High, respectively), with FB completely replacing soybean meal, rapeseed meal, maize gluten, and wheat in the concentrate for the FB-High treatment. Following completion of the 20-wk experiment, ration digestibility, nutrient utilization, and methane (CH 4) production were measured using 4 cows from each treatment. Neither silage DM intake, total DM intake, nor milk yield were affected by treatment. Cows on FB0 had a higher milk fat content than those on FB-High, and cows on FB0 and FB-Low had higher milk protein contents than did those on FB-High. Field bean inclusion increased the degree of saturation of milk fat produced. Milk fat yield, milk protein yield, and milk fat plus protein yield were higher with FB0 than with either FB-Low or FB-High. Treatment had no effect on the digestibility of DM, organic matter, nitrogen (N), gross energy, or neutral detergent fiber, whereas digestibility of acid detergent fiber was higher with FB0 than with FB-High. Neither the efficiency of gross energy or N utilization, nor any of the CH 4 production parameters examined, were affected by treatment. Similarly, none of the fertility or health parameters examined were affected by treatment. The reduction in milk fat observed may have been due to the higher starch content of the FB-High diet, and the reduction in milk protein may have been due to a deficit of methionine in the diet. This 2 × 2 factorial design experiment was conducted to compare the performance of spring-calving Holstein dairy cows (HOL, n = 34) with Swedish Red × Jersey/Holstein crossbred (SR × J/HOL, n = 34) dairy cows within low and medium concentrate input grassland-based dairy systems. The experiment commenced when cows calved and encompassed 1 full lactation. Cows were offered diets containing grass silage and concentrates [70:30 dry matter (DM) ratio, and 40:60 DM ratio, for low and medium, respectively] until turnout, grazed grass plus either 1.0 or 4.0 kg of concentrate/d during the grazing period (low and medium, respectively), and grass silage and concentrates (85:15 DM ratio, and 70:30 DM ratio, for low and medium, respectively) from rehousing and until drying off. No significant genotype × system interactions were present for any of the feed intake or full-lactation milk production data examined. Full-lactation concentrate DM intakes were 769 and 1,902 kg/cow for the low and medium systems, respectively, whereas HOL cows had a higher total DM intake than SR × J/HOL cows in early lactation, but not in late lactation. Although HOL cows had a higher lactation milk yield than SR × J/HOL cows, the latter produced milk with a higher fat and protein content, and thus fat plus protein yield was unaffected by genotype. Milk produced by the SR × J/HOL cows had a higher degree of saturation of fatty acids than milk produced by the HOL cows, and the somatic cell score of milk produced by the former was also higher. Throughout the lactation, HOL cows were on average 30 kg heavier than SR × J/HOL cows, whereas the SR × J/HOL cows had a higher body condition score than the HOL cows. In this study, important eating quality attributes that influence consumer liking for grilled lamb loin have been identified using preference mapping techniques. The eating quality attributes identified as driving the consumer liking of lamb loin steaks were “tenderness”, “sweet flavour”, “meaty aftertaste”, “roast lamb flavour” and “roast lamb aftertaste”. In contrast, the texture attribute “rubbery” and the flavour attributes “bitter flavour” and “bitter aftertaste” had a negative influence on consumer perceptions. Associations were observed between eating quality and a number of instrumental and chemical measurements. Warner Bratzler Shear Force showed an association with “rubbery” texture and a negative association with “tenderness” and consumer liking scores. The compounds, glucose, glucose-6-phosphate, inosine, inosine monophosphate and adenosine monophosphate were associated with the attributes, “sweet flavour”, “meaty aftertaste”, “roast lamb flavour”, “roast lamb aftertaste” and with consumer scores for liking of lamb which is probably caused by the role some of these compounds play as precursors of flavour and as taste compounds. This study was designed to contribute to the understanding of the relationships between energy balance (EB) in early lactation [4 to 21 d in milk (DIM)] and fertility traits [interval to start of luteal activity (SLA), interval to first observed heat (FOH), and conception to first artificial insemination (AI)], and their associated relationships with cow performance and blood metabolites between 4 to 150 DIM. Individual cow data (488 primiparous and 1,020 multiparous lactations) from 27 experiments was analyzed. Data on cow performance, EB (on a metabolizable energy basis), and fertility traits were available for all cows, whereas milk progesterone data (to determine SLA) and periodic blood metabolite data were available for 1,042 and 1,055 lactations, respectively. Data from primiparous and multiparous cows were analyzed separately, with the data sets for the 2 parity groups divided into quartiles (Q1–Q4) according to the average EB during 4 to 21 DIM (EB range for Q1 to Q4: primiparous, −120 to −49, −49 to −24, −24 to −3, and −3 to 92 MJ/d, respectively: multiparous, −191 to −79, −79 to −48, −48 to −22, and −22 to 93 MJ/d, respectively). Differences between EB quartiles for production and fertility traits were compared. In early lactation (4 to 21 DIM), moving from Q1 to Q4 mean DMI and metabolizable energy intake increased whereas mean ECM decreased. During the same period, moving from Q1 to Q4 milk fat content, milk fat-to-protein ratio, and plasma nonesterified fatty acid and β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations decreased, whereas milk protein content and plasma glucose concentrations increased in both primiparous and multiparous cows. When examined over the entire experimental period (4 to 150 DIM), many of the trends in intakes and milk production remained, although the magnitude of the difference between quartiles was much reduced, whereas milk fat content did not differ between quartiles in primiparous cows. The percentage of cows with FOH before 42 DIM increased from Q1 to Q4 (from 46 to 72% in primiparous cows, and from 41 to 58% in multiparous cows). Interval from calving to SLA and to FOH decreased with increasing EB during 4 to 21 DIM, with these occurring 9.8 and 10.2 d earlier, respectively, in Q4 compared with Q1 (primiparous cows), and 7.4 and 5.9 d earlier, respectively, in Q4 compared with Q1 (multiparous cows). For each 10 MJ/d decrease in mean EB during 4 to 21 DIM, FOH was delayed by 1.2 and 0.8 d in primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively. However, neither days to first AI nor the percentage of cows that conceived to first AI were affected by daily EB during 4 to 21 DIM in either primiparous or multiparous cows, and this is likely to reflect a return to a less metabolically stressed status at the time of AI. These results demonstrate that interval from calving to SLA and to FOH were reduced with increasing EB in early lactation, whereas early lactation EB had no effect on conception to the first service. This study was commissioned to assess if there are regional differences in the acceptability of beef between consumers from Northern Ireland (NI), Republic of Ireland (ROI) and Great Britain (GB). Palatability traits were affected by socioeconomic and behavioural factors such as preferred cooking endpoint, animal welfare, value, health aspects of beef product, ease of preparation as well as consumption frequency for specific cuts. "Willingness to pay" (WTP) was influenced by income, preferred cooking endpoint, value of beef product, ease of preparation and consumption frequency for frying steak. Results showed that GB consumers scored higher for the same striploin steak compared to NI and ROI consumers. This may be due to differences in the motivation for beef choice and/or consumption habits. GB consumers were less concerned about the healthiness of beef product and beef origin. In addition, a higher consumption frequency for rump was reported in GB, which may explain the higher sensory scores observed among GB consumers for striploins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of two early lactation concentrate build-up strategies on cow performance, fertility and health. The study was undertaken on five Northern Ireland dairy farms, and involved 385 multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows. Cows were allocated to either an ‘Immediate’ or ‘Delayed’ concentrate build-up strategy postpartum. All cows were offered a ‘basal’ diet comprising forage and concentrates (mean, 7.4 kg concentrate/cow/day), with a target crude protein (CP) and starch concentration of 145 and 170 g/kg dry matter (DM), respectively. An additional 7.0 kg of concentrate (mean across the five farms) was then introduced into the diet of each cow, at an incremental rate of approximately 0.5 kg/day, over days 1–14 of lactation (‘Immediate build-up’) or over days 21–35 of lactation (‘Delayed build-up’), with the target CP and starch concentration of the total diet being 175 and 200 g/kg DM, respectively. While average daily milk yield and fat-plus-protein yield was reduced ( P <0.05) during weeks 2 to 5 of lactation with the Delayed concentrate build-up strategy, treatment had no effect on milk yield, milk composition or milk fat and protein concentration over the first 305 days of lactation. Cows on the Delayed build-up strategy produced milk with a higher somatic cell score ( P <0.05), while no treatment×time interactions were observed on body condition score during the experimental period. Conception rate to first service was higher with the Delayed build-up strategy ( P =0.047), although treatment had no effect on conception to first and second service, calving interval and cows confirmed pregnant during the study ( P >0.05). The Delayed build-up strategy tended ( P =0.051) to reduce the incidence of fertility related health issues within the first 30 days of lactation, but increased the incidence of mastitis ( P <0.05). Treatment had no effect on any other health measures, the reasons that cows were culled, or the stage of lactation when cows were culled ( P >0.05). Although concentrate build-up strategy had short-term effects on milk yield and fertility in early lactation, no long term benefits in performance, fertility, health or survival were observed with the Delayed Build-up strategy. A decision-support tool that automatically selects an age-specific target weight for beef heifers and specifies the daily liveweight gain (DLWG) required to achieve this target weight within 3 months was developed as an aid for farmers to use to promote calving at 24 months of age in the Northern Ireland suckler herd. The ability of Northern Ireland beef producers to follow this target-driven growth management plan and calve heifers at 24 months of age was appraised in a study involving a total of 459 heifers of 10 breeds on six suckler farms. A unique growth curve was generated for each farm, with the aim of achieving 60% and 90% of the estimated mature weight of their cows at 14 months and 24 months respectively. Mature weight was estimated using the 6.7% truncated mean weight of mature cows on each farm. At intervals of 3 months, heifer weight, body condition score (BCS) and diet quality and quantity were assessed on each farm and a target weight for the next visit was specified, along with the DLWG required to achieve that target weight. Typically, heifers were significantly above their target weight prior to 9 months of age ( P  < 0.05), but farmers were able to manage heifers so as to keep them within ±5% of their individual growth targets after the age of 9 months. Heifer breed and season of birth did not influence adherence to target weight, while individual animal and farm of origin accounted for 51.3% and 24.7%, respectively, of the variation. Adherence to the target growth curve was not influenced by whether or not a heifer produced a live calf, nor by that calf's vitality, but it was associated with the heifer's calving temperament, calving difficulty and mothering ability. Heifers that met target weight between 22 and 24 months of age had significantly heavier calves than those that were below their target weight at this age ( P  < 0.05). The mean age at first calving was reduced by an average of 3.74 months across the six farms ( P  < 0.001) as a result of applying the growth management plan. Experiences of the producers have helped to shape the development of an on-line decision support tool and to promote its use. It is anticipated that this support tool will assist producers adopt target-driven growth monitoring for replacement beef heifers, resulting in a higher prevalence of optimal 24-month first calving in Northern Ireland. Abstract: Seventy indoor-reared sheep were divided into 10 groups to test the efficacy of the experimental fasciolicide, compound alpha (15mg/kg) against triclabendazole (TCBZ)-resistant and TCBZ-susceptible F. hepatica infections. Activity against the Sligo TCBZ-resistant isolate was tested at three time points post-infection (p.i.): 3 days, 4 weeks and 12 weeks (Groups 1–3, respectively). A parallel trial was carried out using TCBZ (10mg/kg) (Groups 5–7): this provided a direct comparison between the efficacies of the two drugs. Group 4 served as an untreated Sligo control. Groups 8 and 9 were setup to test the efficacy of TCBZ and compound alpha against 12-week-old and 4-week-old TCBZ-susceptible, Cullompton infections, respectively. Group 10 served as an untreated Cullompton control. Sheep were sacrificed at 16 weeks p.i. and efficacies were determined. All remaining flukes were collected and measured, before being processed for whole-mount staining to assess the condition of their reproductive structures (testis, vitellaria, ovary and uterus). A second study was carried out to test the activity of compound alpha (15mg/kg) against mature 12-week-old TCBZ-susceptible F. hepatica infections in sheep. Eighteen sheep were divided into two groups, A and B. Group A was treated and Group B served as an untreated control group. Efficacy was determined by reduction in faecal egg counts. The results showed that, whilst compound alpha was very active against adult TCBZ-susceptible flukes, producing a 100% reduction in faecal egg counts, it only caused a 62.5% reduction in fluke burden against juvenile flukes. Moreover, compound alpha was not effective against any stage of infection with TCBZ-resistant F. hepatica in sheep. Data from the trial also revealed biological differences between the two isolates. Thus, Sligo flukes were smaller in size and produced fewer eggs than the Cullompton flukes and their cysts were less infective to sheep. However, they reached the bile ducts more quickly and their eggs appeared in the faeces >2 weeks earlier. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
