24. Beyond Mechanism: Rethinking Kant’s Philosophy of Nature with the Critique of the Power of Judgment

Abstract

My dissertation defends a non-mechanistic interpretation of Kant’s philosophy of nature. Inspired by the picture of nature in the Critique of Pure Reason and Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science, most readers align Kant with Early Modern mechanists, who claim that we can know that the internally purposive form of causality characteristic of organisms has no place in nature. To these mechanistic readers, Kant banishes internal purposiveness from nature. To moderate mechanistic interpreters, because we cannot know whether there are internally purposive things in nature and we can demonstrate that mechanism applies to nature, Kant pushes us to believe that any seemingly internally purposive natural products will eventually be explained in mechanistic terms. To strong mechanistic interpreters, Kant gives us the tools to know that there is no room for the special kind of teleology organisms exhibit in nature. My non-mechanistic interpretation rejects this trend by arguing that Kant urges us to believe that the internally purposive activity characteristic of organisms exists in nature. Belief in this context is a firm, positive, and voluntary attitude that aligns with and serves a subject’s interests and ends, and that has implications for the subject’s rational action, assertion, and deliberation. Kant’s stated goal in the third Critique is to bridge the gulf between freedom and nature. My non-mechanistic interpretation offers a new account of how Kant promises to construct this bridge.

Abstract

AbstractSociety 5.0 is a transformative vision for the future driven by integrating digital technologies and human-centered approaches, fusing with cyber-physical spaces to create a smart society that addresses megatrends through innovative and collaborative solutions by stakeholders. This article analyzes Maturity Models (MMs) in Higher Education to identify the components of Education 4.0 that aim to achieve Society 5.0, seeking the dimensions and levels associated with the quintuple helix and the mission of the HEIs. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) guided by research questions to highlight studies that address Maturity Models worldwide, identify components of Education 4.0 in the MM, research methods and instruments used, internal and external stakeholders, and some characteristics of the university missions. The study method employed was a Systematic Review analyzing 26 articles from 2018 to 2023 found in WoS and Scopus databases using inclusion and exclusion criteria under a Prisma workflow. The findings were that the HEIs must: a) analyze dimensions of various Education 4.0 components in a balanced way, b) incorporate comparative designs and mixed methods of the MM models, c) provide technology transfer services, training, and data centers, d) provide fully open environments to educate all citizens inclusively, and e) use sustainable MMs for a significant difference in impact. This review offers educational leaders and policymakers the methodologies for measuring the Education 4.0 path to Society 5.0.

35. Algorithmic and Visual Aids for Physical Discovery Using Bispectral Mode Decomposition

Abstract

Triadic interactions are the fundamental mechanism of energy transfer in fluid flows and arise due to the quadratic non-linearity of the Navier-Stokes equation. The bispectral mode decomposition (BMD) is a direct means of revealing flow structures that are associated with these interactions and accomplishes this by computing modes generated by the interaction of two separate modes. The mode bispectrum, summed mode spectrum, and bispectral modes are the primary results produced through the use of the BMD, with local maxima in the mode bispectrum and summed mode spectrum representing the most prominent triadic interactions of the flow.However, these results are often difficult to analyze due to uncertainty in determining what constitutes a local maxima. In this work, a radial search algorithm that has been developed is applied to both the mode bispectrum and summed mode spectrum of open cavity flow data to find their respective maxima. Once found, these maxima are reconstructed into two new visual aids, the sparse mode bispectrum and an arrangement of the bispectral modes. The sparse mode bispectrum condenses the results of radially searching the mode bispectrum and summed mode spectrum, while local maxima found through the radial search of the mode bispectrum have their corresponding bispectral modes arranged in the relative shape of the mode bispectrum. These visualizations aim to present the most important information and results from the BMD according to the radial search algorithm, allowing for the identification of the most pertinent flow physics while also easing the use of the BMD.

36. Caregiver Concordance on Ratings of Child Behavior Problems in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

Behavioral parent training programs are effective interventions in addressing a wide range of child behavior problems. Historically, these interventions have engaged a narrowly defined conception of caregivers, focusing on biological mothers, in part due to limited guidance on how to engage other caregivers and utilize their reports of child behavior problems in clinical decision making. Recent advances in methodological strategies to compare agreement between informants in the context of children’s mental health allow us to identify domain-relevant information in instances when disagreement between caregivers yields clinically-relevant information about the child in services. The current study utilized concordance as measured by difference scores and correlations between two caregiver ratings in the context of a parent-child interaction therapy (n = 57). Comparison between concordance at pre-treatment and post-treatment suggest that there was a significant increase in caregiver agreement over the course of treatment for the level of intensity of child behavior problems. Regression models, used to test effects of child and caregiver characteristics on pre- and post-treatment concordance, found that only secondary caregiver stress was significantly associated with caregiver disagreement. A final regression showed that there were no significant predictors in the change in agreement over the course of treatment. Findings provide preliminary evidence of domain-relevant information in regards to multiple caregiver ratings of child behavior problems. Clinical implications, including the importance of capturing when parents might be at risk for ending treatment in lower states of agreement, are discussed.

40. Uncemented reverse shoulder arthroplasty in proximal humeral fractures: comparative study of two different press fit stems.

Abstract

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) has extended its indications in recent years to include complex proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) in elderly patients. The traditional approach in cases of PHF has been to cement the stem but, as in orthopedic surgery, the current trend in PHF is to avoid cementing the humeral stem as well. We evaluated 63 patients (representing 63 shoulders) who underwent RSA with uncemented stem after acute fracture of the proximal humerus. We analyzed the clinical and radiological outcomes, as well as medium-term complications, using two different prosthesis models. The mean postoperative follow-up period was 21-23 months, and the mean age of the patients was 74.5 years. The average Constant Score was 56.94 points; there were no statistical significant differences in Constant Score depending on the prosthesis model used. No cases of aseptic loosening were observed. However, there was evidence of stress-shielding in prostheses with diaphyseal fixation, although this phenomenon did not appear to have functional or clinical consequences for the patients. Intraoperative complications occurred in 6.35% of cases, and postoperative complications were noted in 4.92%. Based on the results of this study, we can affirm that the use of RSA with cementless stems in PHF can be a safe alternative, providing satisfactory clinical, functional, and radiographic results in the short term without the need to use cement in their fixation. The choice of prosthesis model may influence the occurrence of radiographic phenomena but does not seem to affect clinical outcome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Socio-emotional skills are highly prized on the labour market these days; many writers say that competencies of this type help to increase individuals' employability, but educational institutions consistently forget their responsibility for providing training in them. Most jobs call not only for knowledge and specific technical competencies, but also for a certain level of social and emotional skills enabling workers, for example, to work in teams, to motivate themselves when confronting problems, to solve interpersonal disputes, and to tolerate high levels of stress. The best way of developing socio-emotional skills is through experience, appropriate training and practice. For this reason, we argue that the time spent undergoing on-site training is a perfect opportunity for tutors to help students and recent graduates to develop their socio-emotional skills.
