Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
This article discusses the topic of sewage sludge digestion. Anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge makes it possible to obtain biogas, which can later be used to generate heat or electricity. this approach to resource use is recognized worldwide as more environmentally friendly. The article discusses the experience of European countries in the production and use of biogas. In the Russian Federation, the situation is complicated by the fact that wastewater contains a small amount of organic matter, which is a product for biogas production. Therefore, methods have been proposed for increasing the content of organic matter in sediments, for example, by means of separate waste collection and disposal of organic waste through grinders into the sewerage system. Or, the amount of organic matter in the sewage sludge can be increased by adding manure from animal farms. The stages of sediment fermentation are considered. The topic of rationality and payback of the use of biogas is raised. Projects already working in different countries are being considered. Possible volumes of gas production and methods of air purification during sludge treatment are considered.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
Process removal nutrients, especially nitrogen – ammonia in municipal wastewater treatment is a challenger of design and operate wastewater treatment plant. Nowadays in Vietnam, technology SBR has been wide applied in biological wastewater treatment but the concentration of nitrogen – ammonia in treated water cannot achieve the discharge standard. For the purpose to reach the Vietnamese Standard A, the modification of SBR has been added the anoxic phase into operated cycle to create the denitrification’s environment and enhance performance of ammonia – nitrogen removal in municipal wastewater treatment at present and in the near future. The results of experiment shows that, the efficiency of N – NH4 removal in reactors sustainable in range 75 – 80% with the nitrogen loadings rate from 0.07 – 0.25 kg N – NH4/kg sludge/d. However, in 3 hours of anoxic phase, the value of specific denitrification rate is 0.10 – 0.15 kg N – NO3/kg sludge/d with the organic loadings rate in range 0.3 – 1.0 kg BOD/kg sludge/d and can reach the maximum is 0.2 kg N – NO3/kg sludge/d when the organic loadings rate increase to 2.0 kg BOD/kg sludge/d.

Filamentous bulking of activated sludge is one of the most common problems in the world of biological wastewater treatment. The authors examine one of innovative ways of suppressing the sludge bulking. Unlike conventional methods, this technology is aimed at the attainment of a positive effect without changing the external factors that lead to the dominance of filamentous bacteria species or the quantitative composition of the sludge. This method is based on the selective oxidative effects of ozone produced on the cells of filamentous bacteria. The authors present the experimental data obtained in the studies performed at Uppsala University. Over last decades, the treatment of phenol-contaminated streams has invariably been as top-priority. In this paper, electropersulfate (EPS) process was investigated for the phenol degradation. In EPS, persulfate ions are electrochemically activated using iron electrodes as a continuous low-cost Fe2+ source. In addition, the effect of wide range of coexisting cations and anions on the phenol removal were demonstrated. The study was undertaken at the optimal operating conditions obtained by previous literature review. In this regard, at different concentrations, cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, NH+4) and anions (HCO−3, CO2−3, SO2−3, SO2−4, NO−3, SCN−) were chosen as common ions presenting along with phenolic species in water/wastewater sources. The results indicated that the introduce of coexisting cations and anions exerted a significant role, leading to a reduction in the removal efficiency of phenol. The order of the coexisting cations from significant effect to the neglectable was Ca2+>NH+4 >Mg2+> Mn2+. The presence of Ca2+, Mg2+, and Mn2+ caused formation of passivation layer on the electrodes leading to decline the phenol removal. Besides, the negative effect of NH+4 was due to its oxidation by the sulfate radicals (SO•−4) or its transformation to nitrophenolic byproducts. The coexisting anions had serious harmful effect more than the cations on the phenol degradation. The results revealed that the presence of thiocyanate (SCN−) or sulfite ions (SO2−3) could completely prevent the removal of phenol a result of simultaneous consumption of the generated SO•−4 by them. However, the other anions (HCO−3, CO2−3, and SO2−4) had lesser effect due to banishing the alkalinity at acidic condition and also because of the reduction of anodic dissolution. The seafood industry is one of the important economic sectors of costal countries, especially in Vietnam and therefore wastewater from seafood industry with very high concentration of organic matters, fat, oil and grease, and nitrogen content also a major challenger for environment protection. However, in technology biological seafood wastewater treatment, process Nitrification and removal ammonia – nitrogen has not yet been properly considered when compared with the process removal organic matters. After that, in traditional technology seafood wastewater treatment, the aerobic process limits the rate of pollutant discharge in wastewater to the ratio C:N:P≈100:5:1. Based on the building and operation model Sequencing Batch Reactor – a modification variation of technology activated sludge in laboratory, performance of process combined removal organic matter and ammonia – nitrogen removal has been determinate. With seafood wastewater with ratio Carbon/Nitrogen from 5 – 6, the efficiency removal reaches 78.3 – 80.0% for COD and 93.9 – 94.5% for N – NH

Wastewater treatment facilities using the activated sludge process are the most widely used solutions worldwide, regardless of the region. According to statistics, the most common option for Vietnam's conditions is the sequenced batch reactor, which is used at a third of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Thus, studies of treatment processes in SBRs that seek high-quality treatment may have a wide range of further applications in practice. Another reason is that wastewater treated to meet Vietnamese standards has a significant negative impact on water resources. The research was carried out in relation to Hoaxuan wastewater treatment plants, where pilot models were installed that worked on influent wastewater. Studies of the nitrification process in SBRs (cycle duration 4 h) have shown that the highest efficiency of removal of pollutants (organic pollution by 90%, ammonium nitrogen by 80%) is achieved at a pH value close to 8.0. The increase in pH also had a positive effect on the increase in the specific rate of nitrification. At the second stage of the research, the process of denitrification in SBRs (cycle duration of 6.5 h) was considered. The results demonstrated that treatment quality corresponded to the standards for the Russian Federation, which are stricter than Vietnamese standards (3.0 mg/L vs. 30 mg/L of biochemical oxygen demand; 0.4 mg/L vs. 5 mg/L of ammonium nitrogen). For the second part of the study, a specific denitrification rate was determined in order to establish its dependence on the main parameters of the SBR model performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As part of the work, an experimental study of the operation of the model of the oxidation ditch was carried out. The study was carried out for various operating modes of oxidation ditches, including various configurations of the location of oxygen zones, general oxygen operating conditions, various loads on activated sludge, as well as various degrees of internal recirculation, providing the main technological mode of operation of the structures under consideration. The possibility of carrying out the process of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification was investigated. For this, the models were operated at dissolved oxygen concentrations up to 0.5 mg / l. When creating separate anoxic and aerobic zones, the possibility of a gradient distribution of the dissolved oxygen concentration in the model corridor was considered. The results obtained clarify the kinetics of the reactions taking place in the oxidation ditches in terms of the oxidation of organic pollutants and the removal of nitrogen compounds. The kinetics is consistent with wastewater treatment typical for settlements in the Russian Federation. As a result of the study, the Michaelis constants for the reactions of enzymatic kinetics were obtained. These constants can be used for calculations by the Ekenfelder method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phenols are introduced to environmental aqueous systems form different industrial effluents, such as petrochemical industries, oil refining, and manufacturing of phenolic resin. phenols are considered as priority pollutants that are toxic and make health concerns. Therefore, they should be removed form aquatic environments. In this regard, the present study investigated the removal of phenol by electropersulfate (EPS) process. The experiments were analyzed using the response surface methodology (RSM) through the central composite design (CCD) to demonstrate the interactions and complexities between five independent variables (initial pH, reaction time, persulfate dosage, applied current, and initial phenolic concentration) and the phenol removal efficiency as the system response. A quadratic model was chosen from the CCD design matrix. The model was significant, and its adequacy was justified through analysis of variance (ANOVA) with an insignificant Lack of Fit and R2 of 0.988. The results showed that phenol removal increased by increasing contact time and persulfate (PS) dose, and with an increase in the applied current. In contrast, the removal efficiency decreased significantly with the increase of the initial phenol concentration. The optimum conditions for maximum phenol removal using CCD were obtained at pH 3.78, reaction time of 15 min, PS dosage of 2g/L, applied current 0.6 A, and 100 mg/L initial phenol concentration. Under the obtained optimum conditions, a kinetic study was performed, confirming that the overall phenol removal rate follows first-order kinetic reaction with rate constant (K1 = 6.39 h−1). In conclusion, the study revealed the power of sulfate radicals to provide relatively high phenol removal efficiency and the ability of CCD in the EPS operation factors optimization. This article analyses the impact of the excess of chemical agents in the snow on the environment and on the working waste water treatment facilities. The article presents some suggestions for improvement of regulatory requirements concerning design engineering of snow melting facilities in the water disposal system. This suggestion was substantiated to assess snow as waste disposed from road surface, and to register snow mass delivered to snow melting facilities in equivalent units. It is assumed that snow melting stations are facilities designed for waste treatment, and this is why the project documentation for construction of these facilities has to undergo a state expertise for Environmental Impact Assessment. Completed studies provide estimates of the receipted snow, its pollution, etc. But at the same time these studies serve as the basis for approving the necessity of developing a unified system for monitoring the city's snow-melting plants to ensure the reliability.

The article presents the authors’ analysis of the industrial wastewater treatment and recycling technologies based on conventional technologies. It is pointed out that conventional electroplating waste water treatment plants in Russian Federation have several disadvantages, such relatively high operating costs and low wastewater processing efficiency. Thus electroplating wastewater treatment plants have to be modernized according to Best Available Technologies (BAT).A modern electroplating wastewater treatment and recycling technology based on BAT such as electroflotation, ultrafiltration and industrial reverse osmosis has been developed and successfully implemented at several RF industrial enterprises. The represented system is free from the disadvantages such as conventional wastewater processing technologies have. It allows to achieve integrated treatment of electroplating wastewater from heavy metal ions down to 0,04 mg/l and from oil products down to 0,05 mg/l within low power and chemicals consumptions with further water reuse, significantly reducing water disposal and WWTPs operating costs and thus ensuring the profitability of WWTPs usage and as a result electroplating industry in general.

This paper addresses the biological treatment of wastewater associated with removal of nitrogen. Results of laboratory experiments that involve nitrification and denitrification are also presented and analyzed in the paper. Discharges of inadequately treated and untreated wastewater have a negative impact on the aquatic ecosystem. The biological treatment of the wastewater that includes denitrification is strongly influenced by external factors. They need thorough research at the stage of design of water treatment facilities. The objective of this research is development of effective construction technologies on the basis of experimental studies with a view to the modernization of biological wastewater treatment facilities. The analysis of the latest scientific papers on water treatment demonstrates that the singlesludge nitrification and denitrification technology is the most effective and the simplest one in terms of its implementation. The studies were conducted at the research laboratory of Moscow State University of Civil Engineering. The laboratory facilities make it possible to perform the processes of nitrification, denitrifiation and sedimentation. The composition of the wastewater used in the experiment was close to that of the natural wastewater. Optimal process parameters of a wastewater treatment plant, including capacities of nitrification and denitrification tanks and concentrations of nitrate required for effective biological removal of phosphorus, were identified in the laboratory. Positive results were obtained in terms of removal of organic compounds and nutrients. The technology of nitrogen removal from the wastewater was developed. The proposed technology of modernization of biological wastewater treatment facilities is based on conversion of existing aeration capacities into nitrification and denitrification zones, and it does not include construction of any new premises.

The authors argue that development of car service companies has caused a new environmental problem: waste water produced by transport enterprises. Their number multiplies day to day in big cities of Russia. At the same time, the quality of the waste water treated by local water treatment stations fails to meet the present-day standard requirements. Moreover, potable water shall not be used for the purpose of washing transport vehicles. Within the recent 10 years, MGSU has developed a number of research projects aimed at the resolution of this problem. The concept developed by the MGSU specialists is to attain the highest quality of treated waste water generated by car washes and transport enterprises using the most advanced technologies of water treatment rather than to design new water treatment plants. Various methods may be applied for this purpose: restructuring of water treatment facilities, advanced feed, updated regulations governing the operation of water treatment plants.

The article has the author's analysis of the status of the sector of wastewater treatment and the condition of waste water treatment plants (WWTPs). It is pointed out that a big number of WWTPs fail to perform proper treatment due to their being worn-out and obsolete. However a tougher legislation accelerates their reconstruction. Approaches to the WWTP reconstruction should demonstrate a strong economic and technological base. The author proposes a new algorithm for their reconstruction. A sensible combination of the principles of WWTP restructuring, development of new fine wastewater cleaning methods, and assimilation of new materials and chemical agents will help resolve the vital problem of waste water discharge into Russia's water bodies. This is the first methodology of reconstruction of WWTPs developed on the basis of the above concept and supported by practical implementation.

The article presents the results of the research on the possibility of using a trickling filter for high efficiency treatment of dairy sewage. Nowadays, to the best of the authors' knowledge, it is possible to change the activated sludge system to the trickling filter technology, especially in small dairy plants with lower raw sewage parameters in comparison to larger plants. In the research, dairy wastewater after dissolved air flotation (DAF) process was treated with a laboratory scale Gunt CE701e research model which allows to control the basic parameters of the treatment with a trickling filter (TF). The conducted study included determining the changing sewage parameters during the DAF process, as well as the trickling filter (TF) efficiency. Such parameters as Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), total Organic Carbon (TOC), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and total phosphorous (TP) were checked. The research results confirmed the possibility of high efficiency treatment of dairy sewage with DAF and trickling filter technologies. The average efficiency of DAF treatment was 59.3% for BOD, 49.0% for COD and 80.0% for TP, while the average treatment efficiency of TF was 87.3%, 78.3% and 27.9% without recirculation and 95.2%, 85.5% and 42.0% with 100% recirculation applied, respectively. The load of TF during the operation without recirculation was on average 0.22 kgBOD5·m-3·d-1 and 0.25 with 100% recirculation. Applying recirculation allowed to reach the BOD, COD and total phosphorus standards for the sewage discharged to a receiver from Bielmlek dairy WWTP. On the other hand, the concentration of total nitrogen exceeded the permitted standards in this facility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a study on the operational stability of laboratory oxidation ditches, designated for synthetic and real wastewater and operable at low concentrations of dissolved oxygen. The project encompassed the stability monitoring of activated sludge depending on sedimentation characteristics and hydrobiological indicator microorganisms, determining (1) the size of sludge floccules and (2) the main functional groups of microorganisms identified in the course of the PCR analysis and reaction rates, plotted using the Michaelis–Menten enzymatic kinetics for the mixed culture biomass. The most stable system involves a bioreactor featuring dissolved oxygen gradients that range from 1.9 to 0.15 mg/L s, a specific organic load of 0.21 gBOD/g/d and a hydraulic retention time of 12 h. A built-in settling tank allows the consideration of the potential generation of large floccules of activated sludge in oxidation ditches (at least 300 μm) that increase the efficiency of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. Thus, the obtained reaction rates can be used in calculations and simulations of the operation of oxidation ditches at low concentrations of dissolved oxygen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The social and economic development of the society to a greater or lesser degree touches upon ecological questions, which include water supply conservation. Waste water treatment plays a very important role. Over the recent years in developed countries the phenomenon of suburbanization has appeared. It means growth and development of the suburban area of the biggest cities. In relation with it, it seems perspective to investigate the technologies aimed at wastewater treatment coming from small settlements. The paper considers the prospects of the use of oxidation ditches as the main biological WWTP-structures for small towns in the Moscow region. In order to study the conditions to achieve high efficiency of nitrogen removal and to investigate the rule of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification removal (SND), the laboratory-scale oxidation ditch model was made in the Laboratory of Biological methods of Wastewater Treatment of Moscow State University of Civil Engineering. The experiment lasted for 6 months and showed good results, which can be used for further studies. The Michaelis - Menten formulas for enzyme kinetics of the studied biological system were obtained.
