This paper addresses the limited adaptability and the computational burden of energy management systems (EMSs) for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) implemented via dynamic programming (DP)-based approaches. First, a deterministic dynamic programming (DDP) framework is presented to solve HEV EMS problems subject to a specific driving cycle. To address this limitation, an improved DDP approach, integrating the actual travelled position of the vehicle into the control law, is proposed. This way, a given DDP-based EMS can be applied to all the driving cycles, yet still measured on the same road. Stochastic dynamic programming (SDP)-based EMSs are also developed and prove to be more adaptive to driving scenarios completely different from the ones used for their computation. Real-world driving cycles are employed in all the presented cases, while a reduced HEV powertrain model is used to alleviate the typical DP computational burden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this brief, cluster synchronization of Boolean Networks (BNs) under state-flipped control is considered. We show how the cluster synchronization problem can be transformed into a set stabilization problem, based on which we give a theorem to judge whether the cluster synchronization of BNs can be achieved under a given flip set. Moreover, when the network structure is unknown, the $Q$ -learning $(QL)$ algorithm, a model-free reinforcement learning algorithm, is developed to search control sequences to achieve cluster synchronization. The efficient handling of nitrogen has become a critical issue in modern agriculture, from a financial standpoint, as well as in regard to reducing the environmental impacts of using an excessive amount of nitrogen fertilizer. Manure compost is useful for maintaining or raising soil chemical levels without excessive NO 3 − accumulation; however, for the best grain yield, it should be combined with N fertilizer. Via this study, we aimed to develop an optimal decision support system that indicates when to initiate fertilization based on nitrogen-limited (N-limited) crop growth dynamics. An optimal nitrogen fertilizer (N-fertilizer) management system increases crop yield while maintaining a balance between fertilizer supply and crop demand. This study used the N-limited crop growth model (LINTUL3) to develop an optimal decision support system. In this work, we formulated and resolved two optimization challenges: (i) maximization of biomass growth; and (ii) maximization of growth with the least cost paid on N-fertilizer and its application. Furthermore, two case studies were developed based on the number of fields: (i) optimization for a single field, and (ii) optimization for multiple fields. In the case of multiple fields, it is hypothesized that a fertilizer treatment for one field can leak to other fields and affect the nitrogen dynamics of different fields. Finally, numerical simulations were carried out supporting the theory developed in the paper. The simulations showed that when the proposed work was employed to achieve the goal of optimal nitrogen management for a crop, a 28 % to 53 % increase in biomass growth under certain scenarios was attained. Smooth power injection is one of the possible services that modern wind farms could provide in the not-so-far future, for which energy storage is required. Indeed, this is one among the three possible operations identified by the International Energy Agency (IEA)-Hydrogen Implementing Agreement (HIA) within the Task 24 final report, that may promote their integration into the main grid, in particular when paired to hydrogen-based energy storages. In general, energy storage can mitigate the inherent unpredictability of wind generation, providing that they are deployed with appropriate control algorithms. On the contrary, in the case of no storage, wind farm operations would be strongly affected, as well as their economic performances since the penalty fees wind farm owners/operators incur in case of mismatches between the contracted power and that actually delivered. This paper proposes a Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm that operates a Hydrogen-based Energy Storage System (HESS), consisting of one electrolyzer, one fuel cell and one tank, paired to a wind farm committed to smooth power injection into the grid. The MPC relies on Mixed-Logic Dynamic (MLD) models of the electrolyzer and the fuel cell in order to leverage their advanced features and handles appropriate cost functions in order to account for the operating costs, the potential value of hydrogen as a fuel and the penalty fee mechanism that may negatively affect the expected profits generated by the injection of smooth power. Numerical simulations are conducted by considering wind generation profiles from a real wind farm in the center-south of Italy and spot prices according to the corresponding market zone. The results show the impact of each cost term on the performances of the controller and how they can be effectively combined in order to achieve some reasonable trade-off. In particular, it is highlighted that a static choice of the corresponding weights can lead to not very effective handling of the effects given by the combination of the system conditions with the various exogenous', while a dynamic choice may suit the purpose instead. This review focuses on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in precision agriculture, and specifically, in precision viticulture (PV), and is intended to present a bibliometric analysis of their developments in the field. To this aim, a bibliometric analysis of research papers published in the last 15 years is presented based on the Scopus database. The analysis shows that the researchers from the United States, China, Italy and Spain lead the precision agriculture through UAV applications. In terms of employing UAVs in PV, researchers from Italy are fast extending their work followed by Spain and finally the United States. Additionally, the paper provides a comprehensive study on popular journals for academicians to submit their work, accessible funding organizations, popular nations, institutions, and authors conducting research on utilizing UAVs for precision agriculture. Multi-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), although originally designed and developed for defence and military purposes, in the last ten years have gained momentum, especially for civilian applications, such as search and rescue, surveying and mapping, and agricultural crops and monitoring. Thanks to their hovering and Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) capabilities and the capacity to carry out tasks with complete autonomy, they are now a standard platform for both research and industrial uses. However, while the flight control architecture is well established in the literature, there are still many challenges in designing autonomous guidance and navigation systems to make the UAV able to work in constrained and cluttered environments or also indoors. Therefore, the main motivation of this work is to provide a comprehensive and exhaustive literature review on the numerous methods and approaches to address path-planning problems for multi-rotor UAVs. In particular, the inclusion of a review of the related research in the context of Precision Agriculture (PA) provides a unified and accessible presentation for researchers who are initiating their endeavours in this subject. In this paper, a novel model for price management systems in resource allocation problems is proposed. Stochastic customer requests for resource allocations and releases are modelled as constrained parallel Birth–Death Processes (BDP). We address both instant (i.e. the customer requires a resource to be allocated immediately) and advance (i.e. the customer books a resource for future use) reservation requests, the latter with both bounded and unbounded time interval options. Algorithms based on Dynamic Programming (DP) principles are proposed for the calculation of suitable price profiles. At the core of such algorithms, there is the resolution of stochastic optimisation problems. In particular, the maximisation of the expected total revenue is formulated via a constrained Stochastic Dynamic Programming (SDP) approach, which becomes time-variant in case of advance reservation requests. Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) techniques are adopted in case of large state spaces. Simulations are performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed models and the related algorithms. In this paper, resource allocation problems are formulated via a set of parallel birth–death processes (BDP). This way, we can model the fact that resources can be allocated to customers at different prices, and that customers can hold them as long as they like. More specifically, a discretisation approach is applied to model resource allocation problems as a set of discrete-time BDPs, which are then integrated into one Markov decision process. The stochastic dynamics of the resulting system are also investigated. As a result, revenue management becomes a stochastic decision-making problem, where price managers can propose suitable prices to the allocation requests such that the maximum expected total revenue is obtained at the end of a predefined finite time horizon. Stochastic Dynamic Programming is employed to solve the related optimisation problem with the support of an ad-hoc Matlab-based application. This article presents a novel solution technique for scheduling multi-energy system (MES) in a commercial urban building to perform price-based demand response and reduce energy costs. The MES scheduling problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear program (MINLP), a nonconvex NP-hard problem with uncertainties due to renewable generation and demand. A model predictive control approach is used to handle the uncertainties and price variations. This in-turn requires solving a time-coupled multitime step MINLP during each time-epoch, which is computationally intensive. This investigation proposes an approach called the scenario-based branch-and-bound (SB3), a light-weight solver to reduce the computational complexity. It combines the simplicity of convex programs with the ability of meta-heuristic techniques to handle complex nonlinear problems. The performance of the SB3 solver is validated in the Cleantech building, Singapore and the results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces energy cost by about 17.26% and 22.46% as against solving a multi-time step heuristic optimization model. In the reverse Stackelberg mechanism, by considering a decision function for the leader rather than a decision value in the conventional Stackelberg game, the leader can explore a wider decision space. This flexibility can result in realizing the globally optimal solution of the leader’s objective function, while controlling the reaction function of the followers, simultaneously. We consider an aggregator who purchases energy from the wholesale energy market. The aggregator acts as the leader for a group of plugged in electric vehicles (PEVs) and determines the price of energy versus consumption at each hour a day as its decision function. In the followers level, since the optimal charging strategies of the PEVs are coupled through the electricity price, the PEVs in a group are considered to cooperate in finding their Nash–Pareto-optimal charging strategy, by minimizing a social cost function. For a large number of PEVs, the cooperative cost minimization of PEVs can be modeled as a cooperative mean-field (MF) game. We propose a decentralized MF optimal control algorithm and prove that the algorithm converges to leader–follower MF $\varepsilon _{N}$ -Nash equilibrium point of the game. Furthermore, a decentralized reverse Stackelberg algorithm is implemented to achieve the optimal linear price function of the leader. Simulation results and comparison with benchmark methods are performed to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method. Note to Practitioners—The effect of a large population of PEVs on the power grid such as overload and voltage drop is inevitable. Motivated by this, there are many research articles which propose different centralized and decentralized charging coordination solutions to address this problem. The core idea in the most of literature is: “How to IMPLEMENT a demand response (DR) program appropriately for charging coordination problem to avoid high peak load?” However, none of them propose a practical algorithm on “How to DESIGN a DR optimally by having limited information from the clients?” We propose a bilevel optimization algorithm to both design a DR program (i.e., price function) and also implement DR program to flatten the demand curve, accordingly. Another advantage of the proposed method is that the information structure of the problem is close to reality. There is no information exchange among the clients and also the utility company does not need to know the private information of the clients. The Utility Company only knows the charging profile of the PEVs in each day and broadcasts the price signal to the clients for the next day.
