Although continental shelf and slope environments typically exhibit high epifaunal biomass and have been subjected to increasing fishing pressure, ecological information on assemblages of non-commercial invertebrate species from subtidal and bathyal areas remains limited. Sea stars (Echinodermata: Asteroidea), which are known to influence communities through their feeding habits, have received less attention than structural taxa such as corals and sponges. To better understand the ecological roles of asteroids on continental shelves, we investigated ~30 species and assessed their distributions and co-occurrence with other benthic invertebrates on the shelf and slope of Eastern Canada. Using fisheries data and in situ video footage, we compiled a large dataset covering ~600,000 km2 that included over 350,000 individual asteroid records (37-2243 m depth). Multivariate analyses revealed geographically distinct asteroid assemblages, with a maximal overall density at 400-500 m and the highest diversity at 500-700 m. The most abundant and densely occurring species was Ctenodiscus crispatus. We found that asteroids associate with corals, sponges, bivalves, and other echinoderms, and that depth and substrate influence these assemblages. We identified species likely to affect coexisting organisms by their burrowing behavior that can disrupt epi- and infauna ( C. crispatus) and through predation on ecologically important corals ( Hippasteria phrygiana). In addition to providing baseline distribution and ecological information for many bathyal asteroid species in the Northwest Atlantic, this work highlights the abundance and diversified roles of asteroids within continental shelf and slope ecosystems. A hydraulic clam dredging experiment, designed to mimic offshore commercial dredging practices, was carried out at a depth of approximately 70m on a sandy seabed on Banquereau, on the Scotian Shelf, eastern Canada. The experiment was designed to study the separate and combined effects of dredging through three treatment boxes (Dredging Only, Dredging and Discarding, Discarding Only) and two spatially separated reference boxes. In all, 270 taxa were identified from grab samples. Of these, four bivalves are targeted in the commercial fishery (Arctica islandica, Cyrtodaria siliqua, Mactromeris polynyma, and Serripes groenlandicus) while 266 taxa were non-target species. Sample biomass was dominated by the propellerclam, C. siliqua, and the echinoderm, Echinarachnius parma, while the polychaete, Spiophanes bombyx, was the numerical dominant. The dredges captured 33 invertebrate and two fish taxa, although >80% of the catch biomass comprised propellerclams and echinoderms. Immediately after dredging, most macrofaunal species decreased in abundance, with the greatest declines inside dredge furrows (which covered 53–68% of the area inside the dredged boxes). Large numbers of propellerclams were excavated to the seabed surface, with a large proportion showing massive damage. There were few signs of discards on the sediment surface. Recovery trajectories of target and non-target species were followed for 2 years. Following initial declines in abundance and biomass of most taxa immediately after dredging, there were marked increases in abundance of polychaetes and amphipods after 1 year. Two years after dredging, abundances of opportunistic species were generally elevated by ≫100% relative to pre-dredging levels. Two years after dredging, average taxonomic distinctness had decreased (i.e. taxonomic relatedness between species had increased) due, in part, to increased numbers of species of certain polychaetes and amphipods, while communities had become numerically dominated (50–70%) by S. bombyx. It is concluded that the disturbed community was still in the colonizing phase 2 years after dredging. The mobile brittlestar, Ophiura sarsi, displayed increases in abundance ranging from 200% to 300% in the dredged and reference boxes over the 2-year post-dredging. A similar response of non-target macrofauna in the reference boxes suggests, possibly, a coincident natural recruitment pulse. Dredging resulted in pronounced, sustained reductions in biomass (up to 67%) of the target bivalves with no signs of recovery after 2 years. Abstract: Geological features supporting cold-water coral habitat in Atlantic Canada are reviewed and exemplified using qualitative field observations from the Scotian margin and Southwest Grand Banks, Newfoundland, in the context of regional geology of the Atlantic Canadian continental margin. Coral habitats are concentrated in areas of shelf-crossing troughs and trough-mouth fans associated with glacial ice streams. Most habitat types are supported by glacial or glaciomarine depositional features, although some are supported by erosional features, probably related to subglacial meltwater erosion. Shelf-break and upper continental slope moraine deposits, subject to strong currents, form current-swept cobble-boulder pavements, forming the principal habitats for the large gorgonian corals Primnoa resedaeformis and Paragorgia arborea. At greater depths, upper slope till tongues are upper continental slope gravelly mud deposits, exposed at the surface as isolated cobbles and boulders in a muddy sand matrix. Common skeletal corals in these environments include the large long-lived gorgonian Keratoisis ornata, the smaller gorgonian Acanthogorgia armata, and, in muddy sand between rocks, the small gorgonian Acanella arbuscula. Erosional environments including friable Tertiary mudstones and semi-consolidated Quaternary sediments, colonized by large gorgonians and other corals, were observed in The Gully, the Stone Fence, and the Southwest Grand Banks. Weak bedrock strength may limit the size of large gorgonian coral colonies. Authigenic carbonate crusts, possibly related to cold seeps, may be locally important in supporting coral growth. The deep sea plays a critical role in global climate regulation through uptake and storage of heat and carbon dioxide. However, this regulating service causes warming, acidification and deoxygenation of deep waters, leading to decreased food availability at the seafloor. These changes and their projections are likely to affect productivity, biodiversity and distributions of deep-sea fauna, thereby compromising key ecosystem services. Understanding how climate change can lead to shifts in deep-sea species distributions is critically important in developing management measures. We used environmental niche modelling along with the best available species occurrence data and environmental parameters to model habitat suitability for key cold-water coral and commercially important deep-sea fish species under present-day (1951-2000) environmental conditions and to project changes under severe, high emissions future (2081-2100) climate projections (RCP8.5 scenario) for the North Atlantic Ocean. Our models projected a decrease of 28%-100% in suitable habitat for cold-water corals and a shift in suitable habitat for deep-sea fishes of 2.0°-9.9° towards higher latitudes. The largest reductions in suitable habitat were projected for the scleractinian coral Lophelia pertusa and the octocoral Paragorgia arborea, with declines of at least 79% and 99% respectively. We projected the expansion of suitable habitat by 2100 only for the fishes Helicolenus dactylopterus and Sebastes mentella (20%-30%), mostly through northern latitudinal range expansion. Our results projected limited climate refugia locations in the North Atlantic by 2100 for scleractinian corals (30%-42% of present-day suitable habitat), even smaller refugia locations for the octocorals Acanella arbuscula and Acanthogorgia armata (6%-14%), and almost no refugia for P. arborea. Our results emphasize the need to understand how anticipated climate change will affect the distribution of deep-sea species including commercially important fishes and foundation species, and highlight the importance of identifying and preserving climate refugia for a range of area-based planning and management tools., (© 2020 The Authors.
