13. From Euclid as Textbook to the Giovanni Gentile Reform (1867-1923): Problems, Methods and Debates in Mathematics Teaching in Italy

Abstract

The earliest legislation aimed to give comprehensive organization to the Italian education system was the Casati law, from the name of the then Minister for Education Gabrio Casati who drafted it. Promulgated by King Vittorio Emanuele II on 13 November 1859, the new law was designed to reorganize the school system in Piedmont and Lombardy, and was gradually and with difficulty extended to the other Italian regions. All legislation regarding education in Italy had been based on this law until 1923, when Giovanni Gentile, a prominent figure among Italian Idealist philosophers, introduced the reform that brought important changes to the school system, while maintaining various key features. To give a comprehensive view of the history of the teaching of mathematics in secondary schools in Italy over this 60-year period, we must look beyond the legislative, political and social factors, however important these undoubtedly are, to examine other factors not comprehensively studied as yet. On the one hand, we need to consider the role of mathematicians involved in advanced research; on the other hand, the role played by many different factors: secondary school teachers and their associations; the textbooks; journals concerning the teaching of mathematics; publishers' initiatives; conferences on teaching methods and practices; debates on methodology; international influences; teacher training. The purpose of this article is to give a general overview of the period, while describing in detail certain decisive moments, in order to show clearly the effects some decisions had, the debates they gave rise to, as well as the work carried out and the methodological approaches adopted by the mathematicians involved.

Abstract

Rational To evaluate the respective impact of standard oxygen, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) on oxygenation failure rate and mortality in COVID-19 patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). Methods Multicenter, prospective cohort study (COVID-ICU) in 137 hospitals in France, Belgium, and Switzerland. Demographic, clinical, respiratory support, oxygenation failure, and survival data were collected. Oxygenation failure was defined as either intubation or death in the ICU without intubation. Variables independently associated with oxygenation failure and Day-90 mortality were assessed using multivariate logistic regression. Results From February 25 to May 4, 2020, 4754 patients were admitted in ICU. Of these, 1491 patients were not intubated on the day of ICU admission and received standard oxygen therapy (51%), HFNC (38%), or NIV (11%) (P P P = 0.013) but not NIV (OR 1.57, 95% CI 0.78–3.21) was associated with a reduction in oxygenation failure). Overall 90-day mortality was 21%. By multivariable analysis, HFNC was not associated with a change in mortality (OR 0.90, 95% CI 0.61–1.33), while NIV was associated with increased mortality (OR 2.75, 95% CI 1.79–4.21, P Conclusion In patients with COVID-19, HFNC was associated with a reduction in oxygenation failure without improvement in 90-day mortality, whereas NIV was associated with a higher mortality in these patients. Randomized controlled trials are needed.

Abstract

Eight seasons of renewed archaeological excavations and conservation activities have taken place between 2011 and 2019 at Karkemish (modern Karkamış Höyük, Gaziantep). The Karkemish archaeological project revolves around an international cooperation framework, one which involves not only specialists from many fields, but also several Universities, Museums, public Authorities and private Bodies uniting their efforts towards shared goals and priorities, including the long-awaited opening of the site, laying within a military area, to public visit. This multidisciplinary and multi-partner perspective responds to a contemporary view in which integration (also intended as a continuous feedback between all involved participants) is the method chosen for facing the complexities and the challenges posed by an anthropological approach, both as far as the past and the present are concerned. What follows is a presentation of our main results obtained at the field, while we had necessarily to leave out of the present work the significant results which have been collected through a complete restudy program of the archives and finds from the British Museum excavations (1878-1881, 1911-1920), for which we have benefited from the cooperation with the Anatolian Civilizations Museum in Ankara, the Archaeological Museums in Istanbul and the British Museum in London (and all the colleagues therein), as well as with several other research centers

Abstract

The Unione Matematica Italiana (Italian Mathematical Union, UMI) was created according to a motion approved in Brussels in July 1919 by the International Research Council, which promoted the creation of national scientific committees. The recent reorganization of the UMI Archive has made significant documents available to science historians. By using some of these unpublished letters and documents, we focus on the following issues: (i) The foundation and early years of the UMI and its journal, the Bollettino della Unione Matematica Italiana (BUMI); (ii) The international models for the new society, in particular the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung, the Societe mathematique de France and the American Mathematical Society; (iii) The impact of national and international events on the UMI, including the International Congresses of Mathematicians (ICM).

37. Tight Blood-Glucose Control without Early Parenteral Nutrition in the ICU.

Abstract

The bong is a water pipe craft, used to smoke tobacco or cannabis. The benefit of consuming cannabis as a "bang" is based on the intensity and speed of the effect. The cannabis intoxication can then be associated with disorders of sensory functions, the type of distortion of perceptions or hallucinations, often accompanied by intense anxiety. Bong cannabis consumption appears to be responsible for specific side effects (especially hemoptysis), possibly related to the importance of inhalation of products of combustion of cannabis and combustion of plastic parts used in its manufacture.

Abstract

This article presents a reproduction, transcription and translation of a letter written by Lagrange to his father, Giuseppe Francesco Luigi, conserved in the Biblioteca speciale di matematica “Giuseppe Peano” in Turin. Dated 12 December 1779, the letter belongs to the period that is scientifically most fertile for Lagrange, that of his stay in Berlin (1766–1787). Although the letter does not discuss his work, it makes evident some of the traits of his personality that allowed him to achieve the excellent results of his research.
