Van der Waals heterostructures offer unprecedented opportunities to design next stage functional electronic 2D devices. Most architectures of those devices incorporate large bandgap insulator – hBN as an encapsulating or tunnel barrier layers. Here, we use an architecture of gated vertical tunnelling transistors to study a generic phenomenon of electron resonant tunnelling through adjacent localised electronic states in hBN barriers. We demonstrate that in the case of two localised electronic states, the tunnelling can be of inelastic nature giving rise to explicitly strong resonant features. It allows accurate tunnelling spectroscopy of delicate features of emitting and collecting layer electronic density of states, such as second neutrality point bandgap of moiré monolayer and electric field induced bandgap of Bernal bilayer graphene. Our findings enrich the perception of interaction mechanisms among the localised electronic states in hBN barriers paving the way for future explorations into their applications. The development of technology for integrating optical metaresonators with two-dimensional and layered van der Waals (vdW) materials opens up broad prospects for the creation of subdiffraction concentrators of electromagnetic energy, surface-emitting lasers, laser displays, and highly efficient nonlinear converters. In this work, we develop a straightforward strategy for the design and fabrication of surface-emitting laser devices based on few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides placed on the dielectric metasurfaces in the regime of quasi-trapped mode excitation. We optimize the parameters of MoTe2 flake and Si metasurface to achieve a positive feedback and to observe the lasing, resulting from their integration, with the predicted characteristics. Promising potential for the development of vdW-metalaser platform is associated with the possibility of simple polarization control of lasing regimes by employing the features of the bianisotropic response of the metasurface's building blocks. Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are stacks of two-dimensional (2D) materials that can exhibit novel physical phenomena and open a door to new device applications. A common method to create such heterostructures is the dry transfer of mechanically cleaved 2D layers, which are usually small in size and limited in material diversity. Here, we propose a simple and clean dry assembly method using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to construct heterostructures based on both mechanically exfoliated and chemically vapor deposited (CVD) 2D materials. This technique allows us to combine the advantages of both types of materials, such as large size, high quality, and a wide range of properties. We demonstrate the feasibility and versatility of our method by fabricating various heterostructures with different combinations of CVD and exfoliated 2D materials, such as graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, molybdenum disulfide, and tungsten diselenide. It is well-known that superconductivity in thin films is generally suppressed with decreasing thickness. This suppression is normally governed by either disorder-induced localization of Cooper pairs, weakening of Coulomb screening, or generation and unbinding of vortex–antivortex pairs as described by the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) theory. Defying general expectations, few-layer NbSe2, an archetypal example of ultrathin superconductors, has been found to remain superconducting down to monolayer thickness. Here, we report measurements of both the superconducting energy gap Δ and critical temperature TC in high-quality monocrystals of few-layer NbSe2, using planar-junction tunneling spectroscopy and lateral transport. We observe a fully developed gap that rapidly reduces for devices with the number of layers N ≤ 5, as does their TC. We show that the observed reduction cannot be explained by disorder, and the BKT mechanism is also excluded by measuring its transition temperature that for all N remains very close to TC. We attribute the observed behavior to changes in the electronic band structure predicted for mono- and bi- layer NbSe2 combined with inevitable suppression of the Cooper pair density at the superconductor-vacuum interface. Our experimental results for N > 2 are in good agreement with the dependences of Δ and TC expected in the latter case while the effect of band-structure reconstruction is evidenced by a stronger suppression of Δ and the disappearance of its anisotropy for N = 2. The spatial scale involved in the surface suppression of the density of states is only a few angstroms but cannot be ignored for atomically thin superconductors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Behavioral health disorders such as mental disorders (MD) and substance use disorders (SUD) are epidemics in the US; however, the availability of treatment and prevention services remains low. This study assessed neighborhood-level sociodemographic attributes to characterize the availability of behavioral health treatment facilities in Florida. The American Community Survey and SAMHSA's Behavioral Health Treatment Locator were used to identify behavioral health treatment facilities in Florida and calculate their density by census tract. Spatial lag regression models were used to assess census tract-level correlates of facility density for 390 MD treatment facilities, 518 SUD facilities, and subsets of affordable MD and SUD facilities. Behavioral health treatment facility density was negatively associated with rurality and positively associated with the proportion of non-Latino Black, Latino, insured, and college-educated populations. Stark rural-urban disparities in behavioral health treatment availability present opportunities to prioritize telehealth and mobile interventions and improve treatment utilization., (© 2023. Multifunctional wearable e-textiles have been a focus of much attention due to their great potential for healthcare, sportswear, fitness, space, and military applications. Among them, electroconductive textile yarn shows great promise for use as next-generation flexible sensors without compromising the properties and comfort of usual textiles. However, the current manufacturing process of metal-based electroconductive textile yarn is expensive, unscalable, and environmentally unfriendly. Here we report a highly scalable and ultrafast production of graphene-based flexible, washable, and bendable wearable textile sensors. We engineer graphene flakes and their dispersions in order to select the best formulation for wearable textile application. We then use a high-speed yarn dyeing technique to dye (coat) textile yarn with graphene-based inks. Such graphene-based yarns are then integrated into a knitted structure as a flexible sensor and could send data wirelessly to a device via a self-powered RFID or a low-powered Bluetooth. The graphene textile sensor thus produced shows excellent temperature sensitivity, very good washability, and extremely high flexibility. Such a process could potentially be scaled up in a high-speed industrial setup to produce tonnes (∼1000 kg/h) of electroconductive textile yarns for next-generation wearable electronics applications.

Despite a rich choice of two-dimensional materials, which exists these days, heterostructures, both vertical (van der Waals) and in-plane, offer an unprecedented control over the properties and functionalities of the resulted structures. Thus, planar heterostructures allow p-n junctions between different two-dimensional semiconductors and graphene nanoribbons with well-defined edges; and vertical heterostructures resulted in the observation of superconductivity in purely carbon-based systems and realisation of vertical tunnelling transistors. Here we demonstrate simultaneous use of in-plane and van der Waals heterostructures to build vertical single electron tunnelling transistors. We grow graphene quantum dots inside the matrix of hexagonal boron nitride, which allows a dramatic reduction of the number of localised states along the perimeter of the quantum dots. The use of hexagonal boron nitride tunnel barriers as contacts to the graphene quantum dots make our transistors reproducible and not dependent on the localised states, opening even larger flexibility when designing future devices.

This fishery was examined utilizing public records, stakeholder interviews, and operational site visits to describe the fishery for the Puerto Rico Coral Reef Advisory Committee as a first step toward development of policies for the effective management of these natural resources. The fishery is not large, including fewer than 20 licensed fishers operating primarily on the west end of the island. Only three operators export product, with the remaining fishers providing specimens to the exporters based upon customer orders. Most collection of coral reef species occurs over hard rubble zones mixed with relic reef structures and rock, or on the sides and frontal areas of active reefs. Other species are collected from among mangrove prop root zones, tidal flats, and seagrass beds. Collections are made using simple barrier and dip nets for fish and motile invertebrates such as shrimp. Invertebrates such as crabs, starfish, and sea cucumbers are commonly collected by overturning small rocks, gathering the specimens, and then replacing the rocks in their original positions. Specimens are carried to the boat and transferred to individual cup holders to maximize survival. Although statements concerning former use of chemicals to assist capture were noted, no evidence of current chemical use was observed. Specimens are held in re-circulating seawater systems onshore until collections are aggregated and shipped. The fishery strives to operate with mortality of<1%, as mortalities of>3% are described as unacceptable to customers. More than 100 fish species are collected in this fishery, but the top ten species account for >70% of the total numbers and >60% of the total value of the fishery, with a single species, Gramma loreto (Royal Gramma), comprising >40% of the numbers. More than 100 species of invertebrates are collected, but this fishery is also dominated by a handful of species, including anemones, hermit crabs, turbo snails, serpent starfish, and feather duster polychaetes.
