Abstract

La cultura contemporánea se caracteriza hoy por haber perdido su locación fija: disciplinas del conocimiento, lugares geográficos e identidades culturales se movilizan de forma fluida en el proceso que hoy se reconoce como globalización. Si bien la sociedad digital y el capitalismo global empujan hoy las fronteras y definiciones heredadas de la modernidad, es preciso constatar antecedentes artísticos que previo a estos fenómenos, ya incorporaban dinámicas afectivas y comunitarias transculturales. A partir de la noción de “poesía misiva” propuesta por el artista chileno Guillermo Deisler en 1986, el presente artículo estudia el corpus de tarjetas postales que él imprimió y distribuyó desde su exilio en Bulgaria (1974-1986), para interrogar cómo es que esta materialidad le permitió estratégicamente al artista superar el aislamiento del exilio y configurar comunidades deslocalizadas por medio de la cooperación y el arte correo.

5. 'Dis-Connected University Students?' Knowledge and Use of Digital Technologies among University Students

Abstract

This study identifies the knowledge and use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) among university students according to their fields of study and gender. The questionnaire was given to 757 students as a nonprobabilistic sample. The results show that no differences exist between the sexes regarding the knowledge or use of ICT, nor do they differ on account of age or the means of access to university education. The study evidences the need for a real integration of ICT into the teaching practice at universities.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Quality properties of 14 saffron samples from Iran, Spain, and Türkiye were compared. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed between anthocyanins, volatile compounds, fatty acids, total phenolic content, and antioxidant activity of saffron samples (P < 0.05). Besides, significant differences in color parameters were observed. Moreover, a total of 13 volatile compounds were identified in the saffron samples using. headspace–solid‐phase microextraction–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, safranal and α‐isophorone being the two predominant aroma compounds. Regarding fatty acids, significant differences were seen in the fatty acid profiles of saffron samples (P < 0.05), while linoleic acid was the most concentrated fatty acid. In terms of sensory properties, different concentrations of safranal, α‐isophorone and 4‐ketoisophorone may lead to significant differences in the odor and taste attributes of saffron samples (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Changes in corm origin along with climate and agricultural conditions may affect the quality characteristics of saffron cultivated in different geographical areas to a significant degree. © 2024 The Authors. Abstract

Microbes are key drivers of global biogeochemical cycles, and their functional roles arey dependent on temperature. Large population sizes and rapid turnover rates mean that the predominant response of microbes to environmental warming is likely to be evolutionary, yet our understanding of evolutionary responses to temperature change in microbial systems is rudimentary. Natural microbial communities are diverse assemblages of interacting taxa. However, most studies investigating the evolutionary response of bacteria to temperature change are focused on monocultures. Here, we utilize high-throughput experimental evolution of bacteria in both monoculture and community contexts along a thermal gradient to determine how interspecific interactions influence the thermal adaptation of community members. We found that community-evolved isolates tended toward higher maximum growth rates across the temperature gradient compared to their monoculture-evolved counterparts. We also saw little evidence of systematic evolutionary change in the shapes of bacterial thermal tolerance curves along the thermal gradient. However, the effect of community background and selection temperature on the evolution of thermal tolerance curves was variable and highly taxon-specific,with some taxa exhibiting pronounced changes in thermal tolerance while others were less impacted. We also found that temperature acted as a strong environmental filter, resulting in the local extinction of taxa along the thermal gradient, implying that temperature-driven ecological change was a key factor shaping the community background upon which evolutionary selection can operate. Abstract

The countries of Southern Europe have unique characteristics as regards participation in the scientific communication process: they use languages that have a long tradition but are not the usual channel for scientific communication, they do not have a powerful publishing industry, they spend a smaller percentage of GDP on research and scientific data acquisition, etc. The present report arose from the activities of the Southern European Libraries Link (SELL), which represents library consortia of six countries (France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey). Although this organization was created to exchange experiences and to act as a pressure group in relation to scientific and technical publishers, its founding charter also states clearly that one of its main goals is "to draw common policies towards information acquirement and provision". In order to move towards common policies for open access to science, experts in each country were asked to provide reports on the situation of open access.

Abstract

In 2007 the book "Scientific production of Valencia in the areas of biomedicine and health sciences through the databases of the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI), period 2000-2004" was published. It analyzed the scientific production in areas of Biomedicine of Valencia. This work continues and complements the previous one. Its aim is to update the information for the period 2004-2006 and to analyze the evolution of scientific production during the Period 2000 to 2006. Thus, we can image the growth of scientific institutions and the areas that make a greater effort in research activity. The bibliometric indicators used were production (works, authors), dispersion, impact of research and scientific collaboration.

Abstract

Background: Substance use in adolescents has been separately related to personality traits and parental socialization styles; in this study, our objective was to study these variables in an integrated way. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in five institutes in a final sample of 331 students, excluding those with gaming disorder. The sample was stratified into three subgroups: 'no addiction', 'low risk', and 'high risk' of Substance Use Disorders (SUD). Results: 12.9% of the adolescents presented a low risk of SUD, while 18.3% showed a high risk, with both being older (F = 9.16; p < 0.001) than the no addiction group. Adolescents with high risk scored lower in control and structure variables and higher in maternal and paternal indifference factors. Non-addicted subjects presented higher scores in conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness and lower scores in neuroticism. The probability of SUD increased with age (OR = 2.187; p = 0.022), sensation seeking (OR = 1.084; p < 0.001), and neuroticism (OR = 1.049; p = 0.042), while conscientiousness was a protective factor (OR = 0.930; p = 0.008). Abstract

The main objective of this publication is to analyze the scientific production in biomedicine and heatlh sciencies of the Valencian Comunnity during the period 2000-2004. The study was conducted using the Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index. Bibliometric indicators have been used for the analysis of scientific production (works and authors), dispersion, impact of research and scientific collaboration. Among the main findings it can be highlighted that researchers form the heath care sector , signed for 52.1% of the scientific papers while the university sector signed only the 44.9%.

Abstract

This work makes an introduction to usability in the web information design framework. Analyses different techniques tipology proposals, and their application in development and evaluation of web sites. A generic framework for usability methods application is proposed, to apply in particular context of activity.Internet can be considered as a major source of scientific and health information.The growing of the medical sites makes necessary to develop specialiced tools in order to facilitate health professionals to obtain reliable information in a fast and easy way. Althought there are a great deal of medical gateways, directories and search engines, these tools do not permit doctors to obtain a clear picture of the resources available as they can obtain using a web resources database. The objective of this communication is to describe the characteristic and performance of the web resource database of the Biblioteca Médica Virtual del COMV and to explore the existence of similar resources. The main features of the database are described: Contex and producers. Resource collection. Criteria of resource filteriring and selection. Description an indexing search capabilities. Also some other simmilar initiatives are commented.
