Fractures are a common comorbidity in children with the neural tube defect (NTD) spina bifida. Mutations in the Wnt/planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway contribute to NTDs in humans and mice, but whether this pathway independently determines bone mass is poorly understood. Here, we first confirmed that core Wnt/PCP components are expressed in osteoblasts and osteoclasts in vitro. In vivo, we performed detailed µCT comparisons of bone structure in tibiae from young male mice heterozygous for NTD-associated mutations versus WT littermates. PCP signalling disruption caused by Vangl2 (Vangl2Lp/+) or Celsr1 (Celsr1Crsh/+) mutations significantly reduced trabecular bone mass and distal tibial cortical thickness. NTD-associated mutations in non-PCP transcription factors were also investigated. Pax3 mutation (Pax3Sp2H/+) had minimal effects on bone mass. Zic2 mutation (Zic2Ku/+) significantly altered the position of the tibia/fibula junction and diminished cortical bone in the proximal tibia. Beyond these genes, we bioinformatically documented the known extent of shared genetic networks between NTDs and bone properties. 46 genes involved in neural tube closure are annotated with bone-related ontologies. These findings document shared genetic networks between spina bifida risk and bone structure, including PCP components and Zic2. Genetic variants which predispose to spina bifida may therefore independently diminish bone mass.

Summary There is an increasing policy commitment to address the avoidable burdens of unhealthy diet, overweight and obesity. However, to design effective policies, it is important to understand why people make unhealthy dietary choices. Research from behavioural economics suggests a critical role for time discounting, which describes how people's value of a reward, such as better health, decreases with delay to its receipt. We systematically reviewed the literature on the relationship of time discounting with unhealthy diets, overweight and obesity in Web of Science and PubMed. We identified 41 studies that met our inclusion criteria as they examined the association between time discount rates and (i) unhealthy food consumption; (ii) overweight and (iii) response to dietary and weight loss interventions. Nineteen out of 25 cross‐sectional studies found time discount rates positively associated with overweight, obesity and unhealthy diets. Experimental studies indicated that lower time discounting was associated with greater weight loss. Findings varied by how time discount rates were measured; stronger results were observed for food than monetary‐based measurements. Network co‐citation analysis revealed a concentration of research in nutrition journals. Overall, there is moderate evidence that high time discounting is a significant risk factor for unhealthy diets, overweight and obesity and may serve as an important target for intervention. © 2016 The Authors Obesity Reviews published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO)

The leading priority for the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union was to reduce health inequalities across European societies, and, within its framework, prevention and control of respiratory diseases in children. This very important paper contain proposal of international cooperation on the prevention, early detection and monitoring of asthma and allergic diseases in childhood which will be undertaken by the EU member countries as a result of EU conclusion developed during the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This will result in collaboration in the field of chronic diseases, particularly respiratory diseases, together with the activity of the network of national institutions and NGOs in this area. Paper also contains extensive analysis of the socio-economic, political, epidemiological, technological and medical factors affecting the prevention and control of childhood asthma and allergy presented during Experts presidential conference organized in Warsaw-Ossa 21-22 September 2011. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons A/S.

The characteristics of low flow, in Timis-Bega hydrographical area, are presented in this paper. The low flow analysis will be done using the flow-duration-frequency (QdF) modelling, establishing for each analyzed sub-basin a local modelling associated to a Weibull Law with two parameters. Local modelling requires the knowledge of two local descriptors: the characteristic times of the low flow De and the median value of annual daily minima quantils. Based on these models, a dimensionless regional model for low flow was established. On other hand, the theoretical distribution of mean annual discharges was drawn for each analysed sub-basin using also Weibull Law with two parameters. Theoretical distribution comparison of dimensionless regional models corresponding to low and mean flow shows that these are almost identical. Thus a low flow estimation for several durations and mean return periods was tested, based on mean flow characteristics. The utilization of this method to the ungauged sites supposes the knowledge of two parameters of Weibull regional distribution corresponding to annual mean discharges, as well as an estimation of two local descriptors of low flow based on the river basin characteristics.

A flow-duration-frequency regionalisation is carried out on the Timis and Bega drainage basins in the west of Romania. This regionalisation concerns 28 sub-basins having about thirty years of streamflow measurements (daily flow, instantaneous flood peaks and hydrographs). This work about the floods regionalisation is realized in the framework of the Riverlife European project. The regional model will allow defining the hydrographs of the project necessary for the hydraulic modelling. This hydraulic project is necessary for protecting Timişoara - city against the floods. The method uses the hypotheses of the converging QdF model and adapts the index flood method for obtaining a regional dimensionless distribution. For long return periods, this approach uses the GRADEX method, which extrapolates discharge distributions according to the rainfall distributions.The dimensionless regional QdF model needs two local descriptors of target site to be denormed: QIXA10 and Δ: the annual maximum instantaneous flow with a 10% probability to be exceeded (the 10-year peak flood) and a characteristic duration, respectively. For these both variables, the relations obtained by regression are presented, involving morphologic and climatic basin characteristics., Une régionalisation débit-durée-fréquence a été menée sur les bassins hydrographiques du Timi et du Béga à l`ouest de la Roumanie. Elle a concerné 28 sous-bassins dont les chroniques d`observation d`environ 30 ans concernent essentiellement les débits quotidiens, les débits de pointes et quelques hydrogrammes des crues les plus importantes. Ce travail de régionalisation des régimes de crue est réalisé dans le cadre du projet européen Riverlife. Le modèle régional établi permettra de définir les hydrogrammes de projet nécessaires à la modélisation hydraulique. L`enjeu de l`étude hydraulique est de protéger la ville de Timisoara contre les inondations. La méthode utilise les hypothèses de convergence du modèle QdF et la méthode de l`indice de crue est adaptée pour définir la loi régionale. L`utilisation du modèle QdF régional sur un site quelconque nécessite de connaître deux descripteurs locaux du régime des crues : le débit de pointe décennal QIXA10 et la durée caractéristique de crue D. Pour ces deux descripteurs, les régressions établies en fonction des caractéristiques morpho-climatiques sont présentées.

A flow-duration-frequency regionalization is carried out on the Cris river sub-catchments which cover an area of about 14 300 km2, in the west of Romania. This regionalization concerns 78 sub-catchments having about thirty years of streamflow measurements (daily flow and instantaneous flood peaks). For long return periods, both approaches use the GRADEX method, which extrapolates discharge distributions according to the rainfall distributions. Maximal rainfalls over 1 day to 10 days are available for these basins, through 92 rain-gauge stations. Because the classical regional approach needs hydrological homogeneous regions to be defined, this method is first applied with three hydrological regions defined by the three main sub-catchments of the Cris basins. After different tests, we show that the whole Cris basin can be considered as a unique homogeneous region. Two descriptors have to be estimated at each target site: the 10-year peak flood Q10 and a flood characteristic D in order to use the regional model for the ungauged catchments., Une régionalisation débit-durée-fréquence des débits de crue est réalisée sur les sous bassins du Cris qui draine une superficie d'environ 14 300 km² à l'ouest de la Roumanie. Cette régionalisation concerne 78 sous bassins dont les chroniques de débit quotidien et de pointe observées sont de trente ans en moyenne et pour lesquels nous disposons des pluies maximales de bassin de 1 jour à 10 jours calculées à partir de 92 postes pluviométriques. La régionalisation est menée selon deux approches : une approche régionale classique et une approche à partir de trois modèles adimensionnels de référence établis sur trois sites observés de France.

The QdF methodology (Flow(Q)-duration(d)-Frequency(F)) allows to describe the flood hydrological regime of a catchment. QdF curves synthesise raw information given by discharge time series: they yield the probability for a mean discharge on a duration d to be exceeded. A discharge distribution is then obtained for each duration d. Based on geometric properties of QdF curves, a general formulation has been found, which characterises QdF curves by four parameters: the mean annual discharge , a characteristic duration , and two parameters, describing the discharge distribution of one duration. This model is very interesting for many reasons. First, it avoids having to choose between one of the three former models developed by the Cemagref. Secondly, this model shows that every discharge distributions for a duration d can be deduced from just one distribution. Consequently, the instantaneous distribution (d=0) is not obligatory required, but can be deduced from other distributions corresponding, for example, to durations greater or equal to one day., La méthodologie QdF (débit(Q)-durée(d)-Frequence(F)) permet de décrire le régime hydrologique des crues d'un bassin versant. Les courbes QdF synthétisent l'information de débit des chroniques d'observation : elles renseignent sur la probabilité pour qu'un débit moyen sur une durée d soit dépassé. Pour chaque durée d, peut être ajustée une loi de distribution. Une formulation généralisée avec la durée d et la fréquence F, basée sur des propriétés d'invariance d'échelle des courbes QdF a été établie. Le modèle QdF comprend quatre paramètres : le module inter-annuel, une durée caractéristique de crue, et deux paramètres décrivant la distribution relative à l'une des durées étudiées. Ce modèle est très intéressant pour plusieurs raisons. Il évite de choisir entre les trois modèles à référence typologique développés ces dernières années par le Cemagref. Les distributions de différentes durées d peuvent se déduire d'une seule distribution connue. De ce fait, la distribution instantanée (d=0) n'est pas exigée et peut être déduite des autres distributions de durée d égale ou supérieure à un jour.

The knowledge of the discharge - duration - frequency (QdF) curves (linking quantiles of different durations for a given frequency), and flood hydrographs of a certain return period is essential. On the one hand, for several needs of basin integrated hydraulic modelling, the necessary hydrological information can only be considered with synthetic hydrographs, which are the upstream inputs in the hydraulic models. On the other hand, the QdF concepts allow us to express the more and more present social request (for instance, to determine some protection purposes). Moreover, some hydraulic modellings often need a quantification of extreme events. The AGREGEE model is a tool devoted to the midterm and long-term actions, and it enables to estimate flood quantiles, relative to fixed exceedance probability. The regional QdF models, developed from the analysis of the discharge (Q) Continuously exceeded during the duration d, and maXimal in the season (called QCXd), allow us to type the flood behaviour of basins, even if they are not gauged. Also, they allow to build, for a given return period, an instantaneous Mono Frequency Synthetic Hydrograph (MFSH), the volume of which is consistent with the volumes deduced from basins observations or validated Q(P) simulations. Especially because of their great spatial representativity, and their great scale integration they can be used to establish some MFSH on little mountainous basins with rapid run-off., Une analyse détaillée en Débit-durée-Fréquence dont l'extrapolation aux fréquences rares et extrêmes grâce à une méthode dérivée de celle du GRADEX permet d'avoir une description du régime hydrologique indispensable pour l'étude du risque d'inondation. Le modèle débit-durée-Fréquence (QdF) calé sur l'information hydrologique locale décrit les quantiles de débit en tout point du bassin versant, pour toute période de retour et pour toute durée, à la fois pour les volumes (VCXd) et pour les débits seuils (QCXd) sensu stricto.

The QdF concept is the basis of a powerful modelling tool which allows the description of the variability of flow discharge (for floods and low-flows) for any catchment. The expression of each flow regime by standardised hydrological variables and a simple mathematical form gives the model interesting regionalisation properties. So far, three reference models for floods and four reference models for low-flows have been fitted and gave satisfactory results in more than 200 catchments all over Europe., Le concept QdF est la base d'un outil de modélisation puissant qui permet de décrire la variabilité du régime fluvial (pour les crues et les débits faibles) de n'importe quel bassin versant. L'expression de chaque régime fluvial à l'aide de variables hydrologiques standardisés et d'une forme mathématique simple donne aux modèle des propriétés de régionalisation intéressantes. Jusqu'à présent, trois modèles de référence et quatre modèle de référence des débits faibles ont été installés et ont donné des résultats satisfaisants dans plus de 200 bassins versants dans toute l'Europe.

Cette opération est réalisée avec l'Hydrogramme Synthétique Mono-Fréquence appelé MFSH qui constituent les données d'entrée en amont dans les modèles hydrauliques. D'autre part, le concept Qdf nous permet d'exprimer la demande sociale de plus en plus présente (par exemple, pour définir les besoins de protection). Les modèles Qdf régionaux développés à partir de l'analyse du flux (Q) dépassé sans interruption pendant la durée d et maximal pendant la saison (appelée QCXd). Ils permettent également de construire pendant une période donnée un Hydrogramme Synthétique Mono-fréquence (MFSH), dont le volume est déduit des observations des bassins (ou simulations validées Q (P). On peut les utiliser pour établir le MFSH des petits bassins de montagne à débit d'écoulement rapide notamment en raison de leurs grandes représentativité spatiale et échelle d'intégration (en termes de surface et de durée).
