Purpose This study investigated whether coach-athlete relationship development through sport was influenced by demographic factors, team cohesion, and motivation variables in Brazilian youth sport participants. Methods The research involved 301 young athletes (136 boys and 165 girls) participating in the final phase of the School Games. They were aged 14–17 years (mean: 16.03 ± 0.83 years). The survey used assessed demographic variables, the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire, the Sport Motivation Scale, and the Youth Sport Environment Questionnaire. The data were investigated with a cluster analysis, chi-squared test, and multivariate analysis of variance ( p < 0.05). Results The study revealed more female participants in the high coach relationship cluster ( p = 0.010), as well as a stronger association of futsal and handball with high coach-athlete relationship quality, and of basketball with low coach-athlete relationship quality ( p = 0.002). When compared with the low coach relationship cluster, youth sport participants in the high coach relationship cluster presented higher scores for social cohesion ( p = 0.001), task cohesion ( p = 0.001), and autonomous motivation regulations ( p : 0.003–0.001). Conclusions Such findings suggest that coaches should seek to encourage group cohesion for both task and social cohesion, thus motivating athletes to meet the demands of the sporting context.

The relationship between coach and athlete has been identified as a key factor for several positive outcomes in the sports context. Thus, the aims of this study were to analyze the association between the quality of the coach-athlete relationship (CAR) and the perception of team cohesion of youth athletes. Objective: This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Purpose in Life Scale in a sample of Brazilian older adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study applied the scale to 309 older adults (mean age = 69.33 ± 7.47 years) residing in the city of Maringá, Paraná, Brazil. Data analysis was conducted through confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, composite reliability, and factor invariance (p < 0.05). Results: Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that items 2, 3, 5, 6, and 9 had a factor loading below 0.50 and should be excluded. The 1-factor model with 5 items showed acceptable reliability. Multigroup analysis revealed that the configurational, metric, and structural invariance of the 1-factor model with 5 items was acceptable for both men and women. Conclusion: Although the Brazilian version of Purpose in Life Scale presented acceptable psychometric properties in a reduced model with 5 items, there were limitations that should be explored in the future.

ABSTRACT Objective: Review the studies that investigated coping in soccer. Methods: A systemic search was carried out in the following databases: Pubmed, Web of Science, Scielo, Scopus, PsychINFO and SPORTDiscus. The descriptors related to the terms (Coping skills, Sport and Football) were verified in the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) database. The inclusion criteria used were: Empirical studies published in journals peer-reviewed scientific papers; b) Studies published from December 2014 to December 2019; c) with at least one quantitative measure; d) Studies with samples of soccer athletes; and e) Articles with specific reference to the topic 'Coping skills'. Results: The results showed that coping skills interact with important variables for good performance in elite soccer, such as competitive level, sports talent, psychopathologies, age group and sex. More specifically, it was noted that the development of some coping strategies, such as facing adversity, trust/motivation and performance under pressure, are potentially common to these variables. Conclusion: It is concluded that the development of some coping strategies is fundamental to the elite athlete, since it is positively associated with the optimal development of most of the variables analyzed in the synthesized studies.

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to investigate whether total need satisfaction and three separate basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence and relatedness) predict life skills development in dual-career athletes according to sex, type of sport, type of higher education institution and financial support. Participants included 136 Brazilian university athletes (65 boys and 71 girls) aged 17–23. Data collection was conducted via Basic Needs Satisfaction in Sport Scale (BNSSS) and the Life Skills Scale for Sport (LSSS). Bayesian multilevel linear regression model found that total need satisfaction and three separate basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence and relatedness) influenced life skills (teamwork, social skills, leadership, goal setting and communication) and total life skills development in dual-career athletes. Total need satisfaction influenced leadership and total life skills. Competence and relatedness influenced goal seating, social skill, leadership and total life skills. Autonomy might not have a strong correlation with life skills development dimensions standardised scores and total life skills standardised score independent of sex, type of sport, type of higher education institution and financial support. Based on such findings, satisfaction of all three basic needs combined (total need satisfaction) and separate autonomy, competence and relatedness was positively associated with the development of life skills in dual-career athletes.

The present study investigated the cohesion of teams and group conflict, based on the theory of compliance goals, in young Brazilian athletes participating in the final phase of the School Games in the state of Pernambuco. The participants were 413 young athletes, boys (n = 227) and girls (n = 186) aged between 14 and 17 years. Participants completed self-report questionnaires to assess the Youth Sport Environment Questionnaire (P-YSEQ), Group Conflict Questionnaire (P-GCQ) and Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ). The data were analyzed using hierarchical and non-hierarchical cluster analysis, chi-square test, multiple regression and multivariate variance analysis (MANOVA). The results showed that task orientation made the largest positive contribution to both task (β = .50, p < .001) and social (β = .31, p < .05) cohesion. Ego orientation made the largest positive contribution to task conflict (β = .49, p < .001) and social conflict (β = .67, p < .001), whilst task orientation made negative contribution (β = -.34, p < .05) for social conflict. Compared to the high task and low ego cluster (Cluster 3) was compared with low ego and task (Cluster 2) and high task and low ego cluster (Cluster 1), there was a significant difference between groups in task cohesion (p=.001), task conflict (p=.003) and social conflict (p=.001). It is concluded that task orientation seems to be a positive predictor of team cohesion, while ego orientation might predict positively group conflict and negatively task cohesion.

Objetivo: verificar se o comportamento sedentário e a duração e frequência da prática de atividades físicas interferem nos indicativos de burnout de estudantes universitários de educação física. Métodos: trata-se de um estudo transversal, realizado com 147 acadêmicos de educação física, bacharelado, de ambos os sexos. Foi utilizado uma adaptação para o contexto acadêmico (estudantes) do Cuestionario para la Evaluación del Síndrome de Quemarse por el Trabajo, e o Questionário Internacional de Atividade física (IPAQ – versão curta). Os dados foram analisados pelos testes Kolmogorov-Smirnov e “U” de Mann-Whitney e o nível de significância adotado foi de p < 0,05. Resultados: os estudantes que caminham até 40 min por dia apresentaram maiores sintomas de burnout do que os estudantes com maior tempo de caminhada no dia (p = 0,007). Os estudantes que caminham até 135 min semanais apresentaram maiores indicativos para desenvolvimento de desgaste psíquico do que os que caminham mais de 135 min semanais (p = 0,017). Os estudantes que praticam até 60 min de atividades moderadas por dia apresentaram escore superior aos estudantes que praticam mais de 60 min de atividades moderadas por dia (p = 0,011). Foram encontradas diferenças significativas nas dimensões de indolência (p = 0,011) e culpa (p = 0,023), evidenciando que os estudantes que passam mais tempo sentados apresentaram escore superior em ambas as dimensões de burnout. Conclusão: a duração e frequência da atividade física e o comportamento sedentário interferem nos indicativos de burnout em estudantes de educação física.

Aims: To evaluate factors associated with the practice of transcendental meditation (TM) in the elderly. Methods: Cross-sectional study, with the inclusion of 113 older adults and women, 60 of them practitioners and 53 non-MT practitioners. A semi-structured questionnaire was used as an instrument, composed of sociodemographic, health and TM practice data. Data analysis was performed using the chi-square test and binary logistic regression. Results: The average age of practitioners was lower than that of non-practitioners (63.7 ± 4.0 vs. 69.1 ± 6.6 years). Most of the sample had completed higher education (f = 45; 75%; p = 0.001) and received more than three minimum wages (f = 40; 67.8%; p = 0.001). In the group of TM practitioners there was a greater proportion of individuals with excellent / good self-perceived health (91.7% vs 77.4%; p = 0.034), and less hospitalization in the last semester (5% vs 24.5 %; p = 0.003). Older adults who denied hospitalization or the presence of diabetes mellitus (DM) presented, respectively, 5.7 (95% CI OR 1.1 - 28.9) and 4.9 (95% CI OR 1.3 - 19.2) times chance to practice MT. The practice of TM is 80% more likely to be practiced by older adults with better self-perceived health (OR 0.17; 95% CI 0.03 - 0.96). Conclusion: The practice of a holistic activity such as TM is associated with better self-perceived health than older adults of the same age, and less chance of hospitalization in the last semester and the presence of DM.

Introdução e objetivo: tanto os fatores biológicos quanto os ambientais interferem nos motivos pelos quais as pessoas aderem e permanecem em um determinado exercício físico. Este estudo teve o objetivo de analisar as relações entre motivação e autoestima de praticantes de futebol society de uma cidade do noroeste do Paraná, Paraná, Brasil. Materiais e métodos: Trata-se de uma pesquisa transversal, no qual foram avaliados 80 homens adultos, por meio do Exercise Motivation Inventory-2 (EMI-2) e da Escala de Autoestima de Rosemberg. Para análise dos dados foram conduzidos os testes de Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney e correlação de Spearman. Resultados: Os sujeitos que praticam a modalidade mais vezes por semana são mais motivados para o reconhecimento social. Verificou-se correlação da idade com o fator “prevenção de doenças” (r=0,26) e do fator “diversão” com a autoestima (r=0,20). Conclusão: Conclui-se que a prática de outro exercício parece interferir na diversão e na busca pela reabilitação da saúde dos praticantes, além de existir associação da idade com o motivo “prevenção de doenças” e do fator “diversão” com a autoestima.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between the perception of memory decline and the purpose of life in the elderly.Methods: A cross-sectional study that evaluated 235 older adults living in the city of Maringá, Paraná. A sociodemographic questionnaire, the Life Purpose Scale and the Subjective Cognitive Decline Initiative (SCD-I) were used. Data analysis was conducted using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann–Whitney “U”, Kruskal-Wallis, and Pearson's Chi-square tests (p < 0.05). Results: The results showed a higher prevalence of women with a perception of memory decline (p = 0.011) and that the elderly with more than three minimum wages had higher scores on the life purpose scale than the elderly with lower income. It was found that the elderly who does not consider that the deterioration of memory affects activities of daily living (ADL) had a greater purpose in life than the elderly who considers that the deterioration of memory impairs their ADL (p = 0.004). Conclusion: female gender seems to be a factor associated with memory decline, while higher monthly income seems to be an intervening factor in the greater purpose of life of the elderly. Not considering that memory loss harms ADLs, it seems to intervene in the best purpose of life.

Objective: To identify motivational factors for the practice of physical exercises and their relationship with the quality of life (QoL)of women. Methods: A cross-sectional study, conducted with 48 women practicing exercise in gyms aged between 19 and 59 years and with a mean age of 39.4 ± 11.7 years. Exercise Motivations Inventory (EMI-2) and WHOQOL-Bref were used as instruments. The data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests, homogeneity of Levene's variances, independent t-test, and Pearson's correlation (p < 0.05). Results: Older women are more motivated to exercise for health rehabilitation. The youngest had a higher score in the physical domain of quality of life. There was a significant, positive, and weak correlation of the physical domain with weight control (r = 0.24), appearance (r = 0.33), a weak and negative correlation of the physical domain with health rehabilitation (r = -0,33), a positive and weak correlation of the social domain with physical conditioning (r = 0.23), and a positive and weak correlation of the general QoL score with weight control (r = 0.23). Conclusion: The main motivational factor for the practice of physical exercise was preventing diseases, especially in the group of older women. Younger women had a better perception of the physical QoL domain, and correlations between some domains of QoL and motivation were observed.

ABSTRACT This cross-secctional study investigated the role of resilience on motivation among athletics and swimming parathletes. The subjects were 64 male (n=41) and female (n=23) parathletes from North and Northeast regions of Brazil. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os fatores associados ao risco de sarcopenia em idosos que frequentam grupos sociais. Trata-se de um estudo transversal realizado com 207 idosos. Utilizaram-se como instrumento os questionários sociodemográficos, o International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) e o SARC-f. A análise dos dados foi realizada pelo teste do qui-quadrado e pela regressão logística binária (p < 0,05). Os resultados mostraram associação significante do risco de sarcopenia com o nível de escolaridade (p = 0,016). Houve diferença significante entre os grupos com e sem risco de sarcopenia em relação à autopercepção de saúde (p = 0,001), percepção de saúde em comparação com idosos da mesma idade (p = 0,001), quantidade de medicamentos utilizados (p = 0,001), histórico de quedas (p = 0,001) e quase quedas (p = 0,001). Não foi encontrada diferença significativa do risco de sarcopenia com nível de atividade física. Ao comparar as proporções de doenças relatadas de acordo com o risco de sarcopenia, houve diferença significante entre cardiopatia (p = 0,001), hipertensão arterial sistêmica (p = 0,001), acidente vascular cerebral (p = 0,001), diabetes ( p = 0,049), osteoartrite (p = 0,001), doença pulmonar (p = 0,034), depressão (p = 0,001) e osteoporose (p = 0,001). A regressão logística revelou que os idosos que não tinham histórico de quedas e não relataram cardiopatia, doença pulmonar, depressão ou osteoporose apresentaram maior probabilidade de não ter risco de sarcopenia. Concluiu-se que o nível de escolaridade e as condições de saúde relatadas pelos idosos podem ser considerados fatores associados ao risco de sarcopenia. O nível de atividade física não é um fator associado ao risco de sarcopenia.

Abstract Aims: This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ). Methods: Participants were five hundred and nineteen young and adult athletes who responded to the ABQ and Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2R. Data analysis was conducted through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Cronbach’s alpha, Composite reliability, average variance extracted, multigroup analysis, and Pearson’s correlation (p.70). External validity revealed a positive correlation between PEE (r=.14) and RSSA (r=.23) with somatic anxiety and a positive correlation of PEE (r=.15), RSSA (r=.30), and SD (r=.14) with cognitive anxiety. Further, all dimensions of burnout had negative correlations with the self-confidence (r=.17-.23). In the factor invariance analysis, satisfactory data were found in the model’s fit, establishing good factor loadings, variance/covariance, and residuals in both age groups (up to 18 years and over 18 years) and genders (men and women). Conclusion: It was concluded that the Brazilian version of the ABQ is satisfactory for the application of possible studies involving burnout syndrome in the Brazilian sports context in different group extracts.

Abstract Aims: This cross-sectional study investigated the predicting role of perfectionism on the perception of team cohesion among futsal athletes. Methods: One hundred and forty of futsal athletes (24.8±4.9 years) were included who participated of a Brazilian Amateur Cup in 2017. The instruments were Sport Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale-2 and Group Environment Questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted through the Pearson Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis (p < .05). Results: The data showed the following significant correlations (p < .05): Group-Integration Task (GI-T) with Organization-Personal Standards (OPS) (r = .27) and Doubts About Action (DAA) (r = -.24); Group-Integration Social (GI-S) with OPS (r = .18); Individual Attraction to Group-Task (IA-T) with OPS (r = .25); Individual Attraction to the Group-Social (IA-S) with OPS (r = .17). Multiple regression showed that OPS showed a positive association with task cohesion dimensions (GI-T and IA-T), while DAA showed a negative association with both social (GI-S and IA-S) and task (GI-T) cohesion. Further, perceived parental pressure showed positive association with GI-S. Conclusion: our findings show that perfectionistic striving could be a positive predictor of task cohesion, while perfectionistic concerns might predict negatively both social and task cohesion.

O objetivo desse presente estudo foi de analisar a capacidade funcional e qualidade de vida de mulheres idosas que praticavam exercícios nas Academias da terceira idade (ATI) e idosas não praticantes de nenhum tipo de exercício e analisar a correlação dos parâmetros da capacidade funcional e qualidade de vida desses sujeitos. Este estudio transversal comparó las diferencias sociodemográficas, auto percepción de salud, nivel de actividad física y la funcionalidad de los adultos mayores adscritos a centros de atención pública de diferentes sectores geográficos de una ciudad brasileira. Estudio epidemiológico con 654 adultos mayores (69,42 ± 7,51 años), de ambos los sexos, de la comuna de Maringá, Brasil. Los sujetos fueron reclutados de cuatro diferentes regiones. Fue evaluado el perfil sociodemográfico, nivel educacional, auto percepción de salud, nivel de actividad física y la funcionalidad. Los ancianos entre 60 - 69 y 70 - 79 años tenían tres veces más probabilidades de vivir en las regiones sur y oeste. Las personas mayores con educación superior tienen más probabilidades de vivir en el este y oeste. Las personas mayores con mala percepción de salud y que informaron tomar más de dos medicamentos tenían más del 50,0% de probabilidades de vivir en la región oriental. La prevalencia del uso de más de dos medicamentos es mayor en el sector oeste (51,0%) y sur (52,0%). Los adultos mayores del sector norte realizan menos tiempo de actividad física moreda y vigorosa (p = 0.001), y los adultos mayores de la región sur presentan menor tiempo sentado (p = 0.001). Los adultos mayores de la región norte presentaban mejor funcionalidad (p = 0.001). Existen diferencias entre los factores sociodemográficos, condición de salud, nivel de actividad física, funcionalidad y participación social entre los adultos mayores que viven en diferentes barrios de una comuna que deben ser consideradas al momento de crear estrategias de salud pública.
