Numerical models contribute to a substantial part of research conducted in Earth sciences. To be executed on a computer, the mathematical representations they depict are transformed into a computer program. The present article aims at following this transformation and at questioning the implications of rendering a representation computationally executable. It uses to this end a case study of the so-called “sticky air” numerical method employed in geodynamics, which consists of putting a layer of a hybrid material — a hundred thousand quintillion (1023) times more viscous than air — on top of the Earth crust. Far from being only a marginal and automatic step in the modelling process, the constitution of an executable computer code is the result of a profoundly creative and negotiated practice. Les modèles numériques nourrissent une part substantielle de la recherche en sciences de la Terre. Afin de pouvoir être exécutées sur ordinateur, les représentations mathématiques des processus qu’ils décrivent sont transformées en programme informatique. L’article se propose de suivre ce passage et d’interroger ce qu’implique le fait de rendre exécutable, au moyen de l’étude d’une méthode numérique employée en géodynamique et dite de « l’air collant ». Cette dernière consiste à surmonter la croûte terrestre d’un matériau hybride d’une viscosité cent mille milliards de milliards (1023) de fois supérieure à l’air et atteste des transformations requises afin de composer avec les contraintes du traitement numérique. Loin de n’être qu’une étape marginale et automatique du processus de modélisation, l’élaboration d’un code exécutable relève ainsi de pratiques profondément créatives et négociées. Para ser ejecutadas en una computadora, las representaciones matemáticas de los procesos que describen son transformados en programas informáticos. Este artículo pretende seguir este proceso y examinar lo que supone el hacer ejecutable un método numérico utilizado en geodinámica, conocido como «aire pegajoso». Este método consiste en superar la corteza terrestre con un material híbrido cuya viscosidad es cien mil trillones (1023) veces mayor que la del aire, y da fe de las transformaciones necesarias para hacer frente a las limitaciones del procesamiento digital. Lejos de ser un paso marginal y automático en el proceso de modelización, el desarrollo de código ejecutable es, por tanto, una práctica profundamente creativa y negociada. Numerische Modelle sind ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der Forschung in den Geowissenschaften. Um auf einem Computer ausgeführt werden zu können, werden die mathematischen Darstellungen der Prozesse, die sie beschreiben, in ein Computerprogramm umgewandelt. Der Artikel verfolgt diesen Prozess und untersucht, was es bedeutet, etwas ausführbar zu machen. Dafür untersucht er eine numerische Methode der Geodynamik, die sogenannte Methode der „klebrigen Luft“ (sticky air method). Bei dieser Methode wird die Erdkruste mit einem Hybridmaterial überzogen, dessen Viskosität hundert Trillionen (1023) Mal höher ist als die von Luft; sie veranschaulicht die Transformationen, die notwendig sind, um mit den Einschränkungen der numerischen Verarbeitung zurechtzukommen. Die Entwicklung eines ausführbaren Codes ist also keineswegs nur eine marginale und automatische Phase des Modellierungsprozesses, sondern ein zutiefst kreatives und ausgehandeltes Verfahren.

In this thesis, the solid/flowing transition in yield-stress fluids is investigated using laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. The results obtained from the fluid mechanics study are then applied to the dynamics of magmatic systems. The aims are to evaluate how the transition depends on the fluid structure and its elasticity, what ingredients are needed to describe mathematically this transition and fluid motion, and when this description will break down. Two systems have been chosen for the simplicity of their dynamics in Newtonian fluids and their relevance to geological systems: (1) the motion of a solid sphere, and (2) the development of thermal plumes. Case (1) regards the experimental work on the free-fall of a sphere through a mixture of water and superabsorbent gel grains. The aim here is to investigate the influence that the size of particles which build up the structure of the fluid has on the dynamics of a spherical intruder. Case (2) is instead approached through numerical simulations that combine viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity together. The role of elasticity on the overall deformation of the fluid is characterized. Results are afterwards applied to crustal magmatic reservoirs in which both small scale phenomena (such as the motion of bubbles and melt pockets) and larger scale phenomena (deformation on the top of an entire magmatic chamber) are examined.; Cette thèse étudie la transition solide/fluide dans les fluides à contrainte-seuil, en utilisant des expériences de laboratoire et des simulations numériques. Nowadays, the scientific community has at its disposal gravity and gravity gradient datasets with unprecedented accuracy and spatial resolution that enhances our knowledge of Earth gravitational field at various scales and wavelengths, obtained from ground to satellite measurements. In parallel with gravimetry, the advancement of satellite observations provides the community with more detailed digital elevation models to reflect the Earth’s structure geometry. Together, these novel datasets provide a great opportunity to better understand the Earth’s structures and dynamics at local, regional, and global scales. The use and interpretation of these high-quality data require refinement of standard approaches in gravity-related data processing and analysis. This thesis consists of a series of studies aiming to improve the precision in the chain of gravity and gravity gradient data processing for geodynamic studies. To that aim, we develop a tool, named GEEC (Gal Eötvös Earth Calculator) to compute precisely the gravity and gravity gradients effects of due to any mass body regardless of its geometry and its distance from measurements. The gravity and gravity gradients effects are computed analytically using the line integral solution of an irregular polyhedron. The validations at local, regional, and global scales confirm the robustness of GEEC’s performance, where the resolution of the model, that depends on both size of the body mass and its distance from the measurement point, control strongly the accuracy of the results. We present an application for assessing the optimum parameters in computing gravity and gravity gradients due to topography variations. Topography has a major contribution in Earth gravitational attraction, therefore the estimation of topography effects must be carefully considered in the processing of gravity data, especially in areas of rugged topography or in large-scale studies. For high-accuracy gravity studies at a global scale, the topography correction process must consider the topography effect of the entire Earth. But for local to regional applications based on relative variations within the zone, we show that truncated topography at a specific distance can be adequate, although, ignoring the topography pas this distance could produce errors. To support these arguments, we show the relationships between gravity relative errors, topography truncation distance, and the extent of study zone. Lastly, we approach the issue: Are GOCE measurements relevant to obtain a detailed image of the structure of a subducting plate, including its geometry and lateral variation? The results of gravity gradient forward modelling using synthetic subduction models computed at GOCE’s mean altitude (255 km) demonstrate that both subduction edges and lateral variations of subduction angle produce gravity gradient variations that are detectable with GOCE dataset (∼100 km wavelength and 10 mE amplitude). However, in the application to the real case of Izu-Bonin-Mariana subduction zone, the second-order geometric features of the subducting plate are difficult to be detected due to the presence of the remaining crustal effects. This is caused by the inaccuracy of the existing global crustal model, that leads to inaccurate crustal effect removal.; Aujourd’hui, la communauté scientifique dispose de jeux de données gravimétriques avec une précision et une résolution spatiale sans précédent qui améliorent nos connaissances du champ gravitationnel terrestre à différentes échelles et longueurs d’ondes, obtenues de mesures du sol à des satellites. Parallèlement à la gravimétrie, l’avancement des observations par satellite fournit à la communauté des modèles d’élévation numérique plus détaillés pour refléter la géométrie de la structure terrestre. Ensemble, ces nouveaux jeux de données offrent une excellente occasion de mieux comprendre les structures et la dynamique de la Terre à l’échelle locale, régionale et mondiale. L'utilisation et l'interprétation de ces données de haute qualité exigent le raffinement des approches standards dans le traitement et l'analyse des données liées à la gravité. Cette thèse consiste en une série d’études visant à améliorer la précision du traitement des données de gravité et gravité de gravité gradients pour les études géodynamiques. Pour ce faire, nous développons un outil, appelé GEEC (Gal Eötvös Earth Calculator), pour calculer précisément les effets gravimétriques dues à tout corps de masse, indépendamment de sa géométrie et de sa distance par rapport aux mesures. Les effets de gravité et des gravité gradients sont calculés analytiquement en utilisant la solution intégrale linéaire d'un polyèdre irrégulier. Les validations aux échelles locale, régionale et mondiale confirment la robustesse des performances du GEEC, où la résolution du modèle, qui dépend à la fois de la taille de la masse corporelle et de sa distance par rapport au point de mesure, contrôle fortement la précision des résultats. Nous présentons une application pour évaluer les paramètres optimaux dans le calcul des gradients de gravité et de gravité dus aux variations de topographie. La topographie joue un rôle majeur dans l'attraction gravitationnelle de la Terre; par conséquent, l'estimation des effets topographiques doit être soigneusement prise en compte dans le traitement des données gravimétriques, en particulier dans les zones de topographie accidentée ou à grande échelle. Pour les études de gravité de haute précision à l'échelle mondiale, le processus de correction de la topographie doit prendre en compte l'effet topographique de la Terre entière. Mais pour les applications locales à régionales basées sur des variations relatives à l'intérieur de la zone, nous montrons que la topographie tronquée à une distance spécifique peut être adéquate, même si ignorer la topographie de cette distance peut générer des erreurs. Pour soutenir ces arguments, nous montrons les relations entre les erreurs relatives à la gravité, la distance de troncature de la topographie et l'étendue de la zone d'étude. Enfin, nous abordons le problème: les mesures GOCE sont-elles pertinentes pour obtenir une image détaillée de la structure d'une plaque de subduction, y compris sa géométrie et ses variations latérales? Les résultats du calcul des avec des modèles de subduction synthétiques calculés à l’altitude moyenne du GOCE (255 km) démontrent que les bords de subduction et les variations latérales du pendage produisent des variations des gradients détectables avec le jeu de données GOCE. Dans l'application à la zone de subduction Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM), la topographie et les effets bathymétriques ont été supprimés avec succès. Cependant, dans l'application au cas réel de la zone de subduction Izu-Bonin-Mariana, les caractéristiques géométriques du second ordre du slab sont difficiles à détecter en raison de la présence des effets crustaux restants. Ceci est dû à l'imprécision du modèle crustal global existant qui est utilisée, qui conduit à une élimination impropre de l'effet crustal.

The Okavango Delta is an endorheic system forming an alluvial fan in the Kalahari depression. The local ecosystem is paced by the annual flood coming from the Angolan highlands, blocked downstream by the normal faults scarps of the Okavango graben. This annual regime is highly variable, with the spatial distribution of the flood differing every year. At the geological time scale, from millenary to mega-annual, the Delta's endorheism can also vary between wetlands (current regime), mega-lake or loose its endorhism to turn into a river. Processes driving these regime variations are 1) the hydrological system, 2) the faulting of the graben, 3) the sedimentary input and 4) the ecosystem. This study brings quantitative constraints regarding two of these processes through the deformation of the Earth's ground surface monitored by permanent GPS stations. The observed signal is impacted seasonally by the hydrological loading resulting from the rainy season, and inter-annually by the variations of the terrestrial water storage, as well as the tectonic activity of the graben. GRACE satellites provide a quasi-continuous record of the variations of the Earth's continental water storage, allowing the modelling of the elastic deformation imposed on the Earth's crust by loading. The resulting modelled deformation signal is well correlated to the observed seasonal signal, hence validating the GRACE data products and revealing a large aquifer in the Okavango basin. GRACE thus provides a new proxy to monitor the evolution of water storage, and to validate more robustly the hydrological model calibrated for the basin. The variations in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in the basin validated by GRACE confirm the buffer effect of the aquifer in the modulation of climatic variations. The phase of the TWS variations moreover highlights a threshold in the recharge of TWS during the rainy season, depending on the intensity of the first rains. Finally, the poor spatial resolution of TWS variations provided by GRACE can be further constrained by a detail examination of the GPS signals in the basin. Horizontal displacements rates across the graben reveal a low tectonic deformation rate, of 1 mm/yr, exclusively along a dextral strike-slip component. Such a low deformation rate excludes a significant influence of the graben faulting on the variability of the flood distribution. The observed deformation calls into question the current geodynamic model for the area, i.e. incipient rifitng due to the propagation of a southwestern branch of the East African Rift System. A review of the numerous geophysical studies in the study area over the last decade, as well as a re-examination of the seismic data in southern Africa does not provide significant evidence for rifting in the Okavango graben. An alternative geodynamic model is proposed, based on the far-field accommodation of the deformation resulting from the differential extension rates in the Rift Valley, and the displacement of the Kalahari craton relative to the Nubian plate.; Le Delta de l'Okavango est un système endorhéique formant un cône alluvial dans la dépression du Kalahari. L'écosystème y est rythmé par une crue annuelle en provenance de l'Angola et entravée par l'escarpement des failles normales du graben de l'Okavango. Ce régime annuel est très variable, car la répartition de la crue annuelle diffère tous les ans. À plus grande échelle temporelle, du millénaire au Ma, l'endorhéisme du Delta peut varier entre des marais (actuel), un mega-lac ou perdre son caractère endorhéique (rivière). Les processus pouvant contrôler ces variations de régime sont 1) l'hydrologie du système, 2) l'activité des failles du graben, 3) l'apport sédimentaire et 4) l'écosystème. Cette étude apporte des contraintes quantifiées éclairant deux de ces processus à travers l'observation de la déformation de la surface terrestre par l'enregistrement de stations GPS permanentes. Le signal observé est annuellement impacté par la charge hydraulique résultant de la saison des pluies, et inter-annuellement par les variations de cette charge, ainsi que l'activité tectonique du graben. Les satellites GRACE fournissent un enregistrement quasi-continu de la variation du stock d'eau continentale, rendant possible la modélisation de la déformation élastique de la surface terrestre sous l'effet de cette charge. Le signal de déformation ainsi modélisé est comparable au signal saisonnier enregistré, validant les données satellitaires GRACE et révélant un important aquifère dans le bassin de l'Okavango. GRACE fournit ainsi un nouveau proxy permettant de suivre l'évolution de l'aquifère, et de valider le modèle hydrologique calibré précédemment pour le bassin. Les variations inter-annuelles d'eau souterraine dans le bassin validées par GRACE confirment le rôle de tampon des variations climatiques joué par l'aquifère sur la modulation des variations climatiques. La phase des variations du stock d'eau met de plus en évidence un effet de seuil dans la recharge de ce stock, en fonction de l'intensité des premières pluies. La faible résolution spatiale des variations du stock d'eau continental fournie par GRACE peut finalement être mieux contrainte par un examen plus détaillé des signaux GPS dans le bassin. Les vitesses de déformation horizontales de part et d'autre du graben révèlent une déformation tectonique faible sur l'ensemble du graben, de 1 mm/an exclusivement décrochante dextre. Une si faible déformation exclut une influence significative de l'activité tectonique et sismique du graben sur la variabilité de la distribution de la crue. Cette déformation observée remet en question le modèle géodynamique admis dans la région, soit une phase précoce de rifting liée à la propagation d'une branche SW du Rift Est-Africain. Un recensement des nombreuses études géophysiques réalisées dans la région dans la dernière décennie et un réexamen de la sismicité de l'Afrique australe n'amène aucune preuve significative de rifting dans le graben de l'Okavango. Un autre modèle géodynamique pour l'Afrique australe est proposé, basé sur l'accommodation lointaine de la déformation associée à l'ouverture à taux différentiels du Rift Est-Africain et le déplacement du craton du Kalahari par rapport au reste de la plaque nubienne.

The present thesis is inserted in the SALSA project (Seryipe Alagoas Seismic Acquisition), which was conducted by a collaboration between the Department of Marine Geosciences : IFREMER, the Laboratory of Oceanic Domain IUEM, the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (IDL, Portugal), the Universidade de Brasilia (Brazil) and PETROBRAS (Brazil).Seismic shot, Multi-Channel Seismic acquisition (MCS) and Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS) deployments were performed by the R/V L'Atalante (IFREMER) along 1-2 profiles.Among them, five were extended onshore by Land Seismic Stations (LSS). P-wave velocity models were constructed based on the joint interpretation of multichannel and wide-angle seismic data using the RAYINVR software.We present models derived from wide-angle refraction and coincident reflection data along two parallel profiles located on the Sergipe-Alagoas basin (SL01 and SL02), extending approximately 220 km and 200 km from the continental shelf to the distal Sergipe basin north to the Vaza-Barris Transfer zone, and one of them, the SL02 prolongates for 150 km through the continent, on Sergipe -Alagoas continental basin and its basement, the Sergipana FoId Belt.The foward modelling of the passive margin in the Sergipe Alagoas basin precisely constrains crustal geometries and segmentation. The crustal geometry puts in question the origin of the Sergipana Fold Belt, when compared with the geometries of the adjacent geological domains, the Sao Francisco Craton and the Borborema Province.The differences between the profiles illuminate the influence of the tectonic inheritance resulted by the Vaza-Barris Transfer Zone. These integrated information allowed some new conjectures around the geodynamic history of the region., La présente thèse s'insère dans le projet SALSA (Sergipe Alagoas Seismic Acquisition), mené en collaboration entre le Département de Géosciences Marines; I'IFREMER, I'IUEM, la Faculté des sciences de I'Université de Lisbonne (IDL, Portugal), I'Université de Brasilia (Brésil) et la PETROBRAS (Brésil). Des acquisitions conjointes de sismique réflexion (MCS) et de sismique grand-angle (OBS) ont été réalisées sur le N/O L'Atalante (IFREMER) Ie long de 12 profils sur la région du point triple de Camamú, NE, Brazil. Le point triple de Camamú, où le système de rift avorté Recôncavo-Tucano-Jatobá est relié aux systèmes de rift Jequitinhonha-Camamú-Almada et Jacuípe-Sergipe-Alagoas, a joué un rôle essentiel dans l'ouverture de I'océan Atlantique Sud. Parmi eux, cinq ont été prolongés à terre par des stations sismiques terrestres (LSS). Les modèles de vitesse d'onde P ont été construits sur Ia base de I'interprétation conjointe de données sismiques réflexion et grand-angle en utilisant le logiciel RAYINVR. Nous présentons des modèles de vitesse le long de deux profils parallèles situés dans le bassin de Sergipe-Alagoas (SL01 et SL02), s'étendant sur 220 km et 200 km, respectivement du plateau continental au bassin profond de Sergipe au nord de la zone de transfert de Vaza-Barris. L'un d'eux, le profil SL02 se prolonge sur 150 km à travers le continent, dans la partie continentale du bassin de Sergipe -Alagoas. La modélisation de la marge passive du bassin de Sergipe Alagoas contraint précisément les géométries crustales et la segmentation. Les différences entre les profils éclairent I'influence de I'héritage tectonique résultant de Ia zone de transfert de Vaza-Barris. Ces informations intégrées permettent de nouvelles conjectures autour de I'histoire géodynamique de la région.

The recent gas discoveries in the Levant Basin (2009) provoked the necessity of necessity of conducting a combined (seismic and field) study to better understand the geological evolution of the Basin. The combination of geophysical and field data allows the conceptualization of onshore and, offshore 3D models in order to characterize the tectonostratigraphic evolution of this area and eventually trace the main sources and pathways that contributed to the infilling of the Levant Basin. The evolution of the Levant Basin is marked by the transition from a pure carbonate system to a mix system (carbonate /siliciclastic) during the Cenozoic. The Eratosthenes block corresponds to a fault block platform. Four major seismic sequences, characterized by periods of aggradation, retrogradation and progradation, punctuated by major unconformities and drowning surfaces have been recognized on the Eratosthenes Seamount. These periods are: the Late Jurassic; the Early Cretaceous, the Late Cretaceous and the Miocene. The initiation of the collision during the Miocene between the African and Eurasian plates coincides with the uplift of the Eratosthenes Seamount with a peak during the upper Miocene (pre-Messinian Salinity Crisis) followed by its northward tilting under Cyprus thrusting. We show that the collision of the two plates caused the formation of small basins in southern part of Cyprus; a piggyback basin (Polis), and a flexural basin (Limassol) that were controlled by the different substratum of the Mesozoic sediments.; La Méditerranée orientale doit sa complexité aux mouvements tectoniques des plaques Africaines, d’Arabie et d'Eurasie. Ainsi l’évolution du bassin du Levan est marquée par la transition d’une sédimentation carbonate vers une sédimentation mixte (silicoclatisque/carbonaté) au cours du Crétacé. Seul le mont Ératosthène, situé sur une tête de bloc basculé hérité du rifting thétysien, conserve une sédimentation carbonatée superficielle jusqu’au Crétacé supérieur, liée à sa distance des sources silicoclastiques. Celui-ci présente 4 séquences de sédimentation carbonatée alternant superficielle et profonde: La fin du Jurassique moyen, le Crétacé inférieur, le Crétacé supérieur suivie et le Miocène. L'amorce de la collision Miocène en les plaques Eurasienne et Africaine coïncide avec le soulèvement d'Eratosthène avec une phase paroxysmique au cours du Miocène supérieur suivi par son basculement vers le nord en avant de l’ile de Chypre. Nous montrons que la collision a provoqué la formation de petits bassins au sud de Chypre ; un bassin piggyback (Polis Basin) et un bassin flexural (bassin de Limassol) ; contrôlés par la distribution des sédiments mésozoïques.

The plate collision in the Alps and adjacent orogens has created a complex picture of highly arcuate mountain belts and complicated interactions of subduction slabs. The subduction polarity is reversed from European to Adriatic subduction in the transition of the Alps to the Apennines and to the Dinarides. The subduction of Adria both to the west and east and the almost vertical dip of the slabs implies an important flexure of this plate. Even more so if one considers the proposed subduction of Adria also to the north under the eastern Alps, which is still a matter of discussion. Gaps in the Adriatic slab under the northern Dinarides, below 150~km depth and in the southern Apennines above 200~km may be signs of the stresses and the consequent tearing that the Adriatic plate is exposed to.Also the European plate has supposedly undergone one or several break-offs all along the Alpine arc. Especially in the eastern and western Alps it is still an open question whether the European slab is detached below the lithosphere. New tomographic models are thus needed.The herein presented tomographic model is based on surface-wave phase velocities and gives a picture of the shear-velocity structure from the surface to 200 km depth. It is the first high-resolution shear-velocity model of the entire Alpine crust and upper mantle. It is also unique in its good resolution in the lithospheric mantle, where previous body-wave models are subject to high uncertainties. In order to be able to image both crust and upper mantle, a combination of ambient-noise and earthquake-based phase-velocity measurements is used in the present thesis.The validity of this approach is tested by a detailed comparison of the phase-velocity measurements and the structures that are imaged from each method individually. A small bias between the methods results in slightly elevated velocities from earthquake measurements. By comparison with earlier works it appears that this bias is due to methodological differences. Several effects that may influence the ambient-noise records are tested with synthetic experiments, but no unique cause is found. The most likely explanation for the bias between the two methods is a combination of different structural sensitivities and the influence of higher modes. Nevertheless, the discrepancy is sufficiently small with respect to the structural variations that the bias can be neglected.A final shear-velocity model of the Alpine region is obtained which has a lateral resolution in the shallow crust of approximately 25 km. From synthetic tests, the average depth resolution is estimated to be 2~km close to the surface and 5 km for the Moho depth. In the upper mantle the resolution decreases significantly, but main slab structures are well imaged in the central Alps and the Apennines down to the bottom of the model at 200 km depth.Highlights of the crustal part of the model are size and depth of sedimentary basins, the Ivrea body and the Moho structure. Being the first shear-velocity model of this detail and extend it is proposed to serve as reference for the Alps...; La collision alpine a créé des structures complexes comme des chaînes de montagnes très arqués et des interactions compliquées entre les slabs subduits. La polarité de subduction est inversée à la transition entre les Alpes et les Apennins et les Alpes et les Dinarides. Le fait que la plaque Adria subducte en même temps vers l'ouest et vers l'est avec un fort pendage, presque verticalement, suggèrent une flexion importante de cette plaque. Notamment, si on considère de plus la proposition qu'Adria subducte aussi vers le nord sous les Alpes de l'est, ce qui est toujours sujet de discussion. Des déchirures dans le slab adriatique sous les Dinarides du nord à plus de 150 km de profondeur et sous les Apennins à moins de 200 km, pourraient être des signes d'une forte tension et, en conséquence, un détachement de la plaque adriatique. La plaque européenne pourrait aussi avoir subi plusieurs déchirures le long des Alpes. Cette hypothèse sujette à débat nécessite de nouveaux modèles tomographiques. Le modèle tomographique présenté dans cette thèse se base sur les vitesses de phase des ondes de surface pour donner un modèle 3-D à haute résolution des vitesses de cisaillement de la surface jusqu'à 200 km de profondeur. Ce modèle est unique de par sa haute résolution dans le manteau lithosphérique où des modèles antérieurs montrent de fortes incertitudes. Afin d'imager la croûte et le manteau supérieur en même temps, une combinaison des données de vitesses de phase des ondes de surface mesurés à partir des bruits ambiants ainsi que des séismes est utilisée dans cette thèse.Pour tester la validité de cette procédure, une comparaison détaillée des mesures de vitesses de phases et des structures imagées avec les deux méthodes est présentée. De l’analyse résulte un faible biais qui montre des vitesses plus élevées avec les données se basant sur des séismes par rapport aux données se basant sur le bruit ambiant. En comparant avec des travaux antérieurs, il est apparu que ce biais est dû à une différence méthodologique. Plusieurs paramètres qui pourraient influencer les mesures du bruit ambiant sont testés numériquement. Une cause unique n'a pu être identifiée. L'explication la plus probable pour le biais est une combinaison entre différentes sensibilités des méthodes aux structures et l'influence des modes supérieurs. Néanmoins, l'écart est suffisamment faible par rapport aux variations structurales pour être négligé.Un modèle final de vitesse de cisaillement de la région alpine est obtenu avec une résolution latérale d'environ 25 km dans la croûte peu profonde. Les tests synthétiques donnent une résolution approximative de profondeur estimée à 2 km près de la surface et de 5 km à la profondeur du Moho. Dans le manteau supérieur, la résolution baisse rapidement mais les structures principales des panneaux plongeants restent bien imagées jusqu'à une profondeur de 200 km le long des Alpes et des Apennins.La partie crustale du modèle donne des informations à haute résolution sur la taille et la profondeur des bassins sédimentaires et du corps d’Ivrée ainsi que sur la profondeur et la structure du Moho. Ce modèle de vitesses de cisaillement est le premier montrant autant de détails et couvrant les Alpes entières, il est proposé que le modèle pourrait servir comme référence pour la région.Le modèle montre les limites des zones de subduction et les régions de basses vitesses asthénosphèriques montants sous les bassins Ligure et pannonien. Des structures connues comme les déchirures de slabs sous les Apennins et les Dinarides sont imagés. Des découvertes supplémentaires ont été mises en évidence : une petite zone de faible vitesse qui coupe la lithosphère au nord des Dinarides est interprété comme l'expression d'une grande faille décrochante...

The origin of the Earth's atmosphere remains poorly understood. Its elemental and isotopic compositions have been shaped by numerous events in the history of our planet, such as extraterrestrial contributions, mantle degassing, atmospheric escape etc. This study aimed to analyze the composition of atmospheric gases trapped in several billion years old samples in order to better understand the origin and evolution of the Earth's atmosphere. Isotope analyses of xenon, a noble gas, demonstrate that part of the atmosphere was not brought by meteorites but might have been delivered to the Earth's atmosphere by volatile-rich bodies such as comets. Furthermore, the isotopic composition of atmospheric Xe evolved over geological ages and can be linked to the progressive oxidation of the atmosphere that permitted the emergence and development of modern forms of life.; L'origine de l'atmosphère terrestre demeure énigmatique. In the central High Atlas of Morocco, the Liassic series present different mud-moundtype carbonate buildups, well developed in the Midelt area, towards the boundary between the Lower and the Upper Sinemurian. Near Foum Tillicht, these structures show a real evolution within the Upper Sinemunan interval, from simple small-scale bodies at the base, up to big and complex forms at the top. Their sedimentological and palaeontological features indicate microbolites and sponge buildings developed in deep and open marine conditions, within the subphotic zone, at the lower part of the storm wave interval. These buildups are closely linked to tectonic processes as they grow on the normal synsedimentary faults which affected the central atlasic area during the Lower Liassic period, leading to the breakup of the Early Sinemurian carbonate platform and the induced installation of the Upper Sinemurian subsiding basin. Silting by hemipelagic sediments led to death of buildings. Similar palaeogeographic changes and geodynamic evolution have been recently described from different structures in North Africa, Western Europe and North America.Le Lías du Haut Atlas central marocain présente diverses"bioconstructions carbonatées de type Mud-mound bien développées au passage Sinémurien inférieur- Sinémurien supérieur au Sud de Midelt. Ces structures évoluent très localement, a Foum Tillicht, dans tout l’intervalle Sinémurien supérieur. Elles présentent des formes et des tailles respectivement simples et réduites a la base de la série et deviennent complexes et de grande dimension au sommet. Leurs caractéristiques sédimentologiques et paléontologiques montrent qu’il s’agit de constructions a microbolites et a spongiaires développées dans un milieu marin ouvert et profond, dans la zone subphotique, a la partie inférieure de la zone d’action des vagues de tempête. L’apparition et le grand développement des bioconstructions boueuses sinémuriennes sont associés a un changement de la morphologie du fond marin induit par la phase majeure de dislocation de la plateforme au passage Sinémurien inférieur-Sinémurien supérieur. L’augmentation verticale de leur taille indiquerait un accroissement de la subsidence et du taux de sédimentation carbonatée, en relation avec l’augmentation de l’intensité de la fracturation. La disparition de ces monticules, au passage Sinémurien-Carixien, est due a un envasement par des sédiments hémipélagiques de bassin consécutif h un approfondissement du milieu. Cet exemple haut atlasique se révèle ainsi comparable aux modèles récemment proposés pour expliquer le développement des mud-mounds connus en Afrique du Nord, en Europe occidentale et en Amérique du Nord.

National audience; The siderolithic paleoweathering surfaces of the French Central Massif have been dated to the Late Jurassic/Early Cretaceous, contrasting with previously accepted Tertiary age and implying that the Massif has never hosted a thick sedimentary cover. This contradicts with former thermochronological results. Herein, we expose the arguments for and against the proposed geodynamic evolution of the French Massif Central constrained by paleomagnetic age determinations.

Sedimentological and biostratigraphic investigations onshore Lebanon coupled with 2D offshore reflection seismic data allowed proposing a new Mesozoic-Present tectono-stratigraphic framework for the northern Levant Margin and Basin. The seismic interpretation supported by in-depth facies analysis permitted to depict the potential depositional environments offshore Lebanon as no well has yet been drilled. The Levant region has been affected by successive geodynamic events that modified the architecture of its margin and basin from a Late Triassic to Middle Jurassic rift into a Late Cretaceous subduction followed by collision and Miocene-Present strike slip motion. The interplay between major geodynamic events as well as sea level fluctuations impacted on the sedimentary infill of the basin. During Jurassic and Cretaceous, the Levant Margin is dominated by the aggradation of a carbonate platform while deepwater mixed-systems prevailed in the basin during the Oligo-Miocene, three major sedimentary pathways are expected to drive important quantities of clastic material into the Levant Basin: (1) canyons along the Levant Margin, (2) the Latakia region (coastlal Syria) and (3) the Nile Deep sea cone. Regional drainage system analysis was performed to estimate the contribution of the different sediment sources to the infill of the basin. A numerical stratigraphic forward model, Dionisos, was used to test the Middle-Late Miocene source-to-sink scenarios permitting to better assess the plausibility of the expected sedimentary volumes for each source through a comparison with actual drainage systems, Les études sédimentologiques et biostratigraphiques menées au Liban couplés avec données sismiques 2D de réflexion en mer ont permis de proposer un nouveau cadre tectono-stratigraphique pour la région Levantine a partir du Mésozoïque. L'interprétation sismique soutenue par une analyse détaillée des faciès à permis de représenter les environnements de dépôt au large du Liban où aucun puits n'a été foré. Le rifting dans le bassin du Levant prend fin au Jurassique moyen. L'initiation de subduction de la plaque Afro-Arabe sous l'Eurasie au Crétacé supérieur est suivie par des mouvements décrochants à partir du Miocène. L'interaction entre ces événements géodynamiques ainsi que les fluctuations du niveau marin affecte le remplissage sédimentaire du bassin. Au cours du Jurassique et du Crétacé, la marge Levantine est dominée par l'évolution de plate-forme carbonatée tandis qu'un système mixte (silicoclastic et carbonaté) en eau profonde ont prévalu dans le bassin au cours de l'Oligo-Miocène. Trois grandes voies sédimentaires sont attendus à conduire d'importantes quantités de matériel clastiques dans le bassin: (1) les canyons incisant la marge, (2) la région de Lattaquié (Syrie) et (3) le fan profond du Nil. L'analyse régionale des systèmes de drainage a été réalisée pour estimer la contribution au remplissage du bassin des différentes sources de sédiments. Un modèle stratigraphique, Dionisos, a été utilisé pour tester les scénarios du remplissage du bassin pendant le Miocène Moyen et Supérieur. Une comparaison avec les systèmes de drainage actuels a permis une meilleure évaluation de la plausibilité des volumes sédimentaires attendus pour chaque source.

The Dinarides are the mountain belt covering former Yugoslavia, Albania, and Greece; they are divided into Dinarides in the strict sense to the north and Hellenides to the south of the Scutari-Pe¢ transform. This article reminds the evolution of ideas regarding the geology, mainly the tectonics, of this belt, emphasizing the contribution of French teams. This evolution took place in several stages. Before 1890, bases of lithology and stratigraphy have been set, by French geologists firstly, then by the Vienna school during the second half of the 19th century. Only the vertical tectonics was recognized. From 1890 to the Second World War, the nappe tectonics is described in Greece and in the Dinarides s. st., essentially by German-speaking geologists, except in Albania. From 1950 to 1970, major monographs developed by the French teams in Greece establish a detailed knowledge of the stratigraphy of the different zones and of the thrust tectonics affecting them, first described in the outer zones, like the Pindos one, and then in the inner zones with the recognition of tectonic windows like the Olympus one. The general geodynamic interpretation was made within the geosyncline model, with ophiolites considered as autochthonous. Starting in 1970, the models developed in particular by new French researchers working in Yugoslavia (1960-1980) and again in Greece are in terms of plate tectonics. They show a two-stage evolution of the belt, including a palaeodinaric-eohellenic tectonic crisis at the end of the Jurassic, marked by ophiolite obduction, before the great Tertiary nappe tectonics. Since the mid-1980s, progress is being made in understanding the metamorphic units, in explaining their exhumation and the simultaneity and gradual migration of phenomena like compression, exhumation and post-nappe extension, particularly in the Aegean area. Recent models incorporate geophysical data such as seismic tomography which, with the image of a large eastward-dipping slab, strongly supports the favourite hypothesis of the French searchers implying an eastward subduction and a unique eastern origin, from the Maliac-Vardar Ocean, of the main ophiolites., Les Dinarides sont la chaîne de montagnes qui s’étend sur l’ex-Yougoslavie, l’Albanie et la Grèce ; elles se divisent en Dinarides au sens strict au nord et Hellénides au sud de la tranversale de Scutari-Pe¢. Cet article rappelle l’évolution des idées sur la géologie, principalement la tectonique, de cette chaîne, en insistant sur l’apport des équipes françaises. Cette évolution s’est faite en plusieurs étapes. Avant 1890, ont été établies les bases de la lithologie et de la stratigraphie, par des géologues français d’abord, puis par l’école de Vienne dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Seule la tectonique verticale était reconnue. De 1890 à la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la tectonique de nappes est décrite, en Grèce, puis dans lesDinarides s. str. surtout, sauf en Albanie, par des géologues de langue allemande. De 1950 à 1970, d’importantes monographies élaborées par les équipes françaises en Grèce établissent une connaissance de détail de la stratigraphie des zones, ainsi que les charriages qui lesaffectent, d’abord reconnus dans les zones externes, comme le Pinde, puis dans les zones internes avec la description des fenêtres comme celle de l’Olympe. L’interprétation géodynamique générale est faite alors dans le cadre du modèle géosynclinal, avec des ophiolites autochtones. Àpartir de 1970, les modèles élaborés, notamment par de nouveaux chercheurs français travaillant en Yougoslavie (1960-1980), puis de nouveau en Grèce, le sont en termes de tectonique des plaques. Ils montrent une évolution biphasée de la chaîne, avec une crise paléodinariqueéohelléniqueà la fin du Jurassique, marquée par l’obduction d’ophiolites, avant la grande tectonique de nappes d’âge tertiaire. Depuis le milieu des années 1980, des progrès sont faits dans la connaissance des nappes métamorphiques, dans l’explication de leur exhumation, ainsi que de la simultanéité et de la migration progressive des phénomènes de compression, exhumation et extension post-nappes, notamment dans le domaine égéen. Les modèles récents incorporent les données géophysiques, comme la tomographie sismique qui, avec l’illustration d’un grand panneau plongeant vers l’est, vient étayer fortement l’hypothèse, favorite des Français, d’une subduction vers l’est et d’une origine orientale, maliaco-vardarienne, des principales ophiolites.

International audience; We analyze in this study a new set of marine data including 3D local tomography, 1992-2008 relocated earthquakes and two recent multichannel seismic lines to characterize the deformation style in the collision area offshore east Taiwan. We have mapped in detail the Mohos of the converging plates as well as the subduction interface with a resolution never reached before. We show that the sharp continental subduction of the Eurasia plate, beneath the middle part of the Central Range, indents the Philippine Sea plate (PSP) as attested by intra-oceanic slicing and incipient subduction of the PSP beneath the east coast of Taiwan. The westernmost part of the PSP slab is probably experiencing a beginning of break-off as attested by NW-trending en-échelon shear zones beneath the southern slope of the southern Ryukyu arc (SRA). These en-échelon shear zones have a sinistral component favored by the "collision-free" subduction of the PSP north of 24°30′N. The down-faulting of the subduction interface forms ramps along which earthquakes clusterize. Three M7 subduction earthquakes occurred offshore Suao city along these ramps with a recurrence interval of about 40 years: 1920 Mw7.7, 1963 Mw7.2 and 2002 Mw7.1 events. The 1966 Mw6.0-7.5 earthquakes sequence likely outlines a WNW-ESE left-lateral intra-slab shear zone. The SRA upper plate accommodates the complex geometry and deformation of the subducting PSP through seismic deformation. Shallow high velocities fringing the Luzon volcanic arc (LVA) beneath the Longitudinal Valley and north of the southernmost Ryukyu forearc basins are interpreted as relics of the LVA forearc basement squeezed in the collision zone. Based on the accommodation of a large part of the convergence through shortening within the PSP and the subsequent segmentation of the shallow subduction interface, we consider that the nucleation of a Mw ≥ 8 earthquake along the southernmost Ryukyu megathrust is unlikely.

International audience; Gravimetric and geologic data show that the reactivation of the Neogene Interandean depression and/or the ~75 - 65 Ma ophiolite suture into the modern dynamic of the Andes controlled the Gulf of Guayaquil Tumbes basin (GGTB) location and evolution during the past 1.8 - 1.6 Myr at least. Depending on whether the remobilization occurred along the in- terandean depression or the ophiolite suture, the GGTB evolved trough pure or simple shear mechanisms, respectively. Because the GGTB exhibits an along strike tectonic asymmetry associated with a pervasive seismic gap, the simple shear solution is more likely. Tectonic inversion occurred along a mid-crust detachment (the Mid-Crust detachment hereafter) matching the ophiolite suture that accommodates the North Andean Block (NAB) northward drift. The so-called Decoupling Strip located at the shelf slope break accommodated the tensional stress rotation from N-S along the shelf area i.e. NAB-drift induced to E-W along the continental margin i.e. subduction-erosion-induced. The land- ward dipping Woollard detachment system located at the Upper-Lower slope boundary connects the subduction channel at depth, allowing the Upper slope to evolve independently from the Lower slope wedge. The long-term recurrence in- terval between earthquakes, the strong interplate coupling, and the aseismic creeping deformation acting along the main low-angle detachments i.e. the Woollard and the Mid-Crust detachments may account for the pervasive seismic gap at the GGTB area. Because the subduction channel exhibits no record of significant seismic activity, no evidence exists to establish a link between the GGTB sustained subsidence and a basin-centered asperity. Because the GGTB is a promis- ing site of hydrocarbon resources, to understand processes at the origin of this escape-induced forearc basin has a major economic interest.

The last ~40 M.y. tectonics of the Aegean-Anatolia region has shaped a natural laboratory ideal to study the continental deformation processes. The detailed analysis of the mantle structure and deformation of this non-mature continental collision zone constitutes an essential step to investigate the contribution of mantle dynamics to surface kinematics. The upper mantle structure is investigated over the entire region through a new 3-D S-wave velocity model from surface-wave tomography. The model reveals remarkable vertical correlations between geometries of the Hellenic slab tears and geometries of shear zones which accommodate the rapid SW movement of the Aegean bloc. The Cyprus slab is clearly identified in the 3-D model as fold and torn in tree segments beneath Anatolia. The observed azimuthal anisotropy from Rayleigh-wave array analysis suggests the existence of two anisotropic layers in the upper mantle. The lateral variations of anisotropy beneath the region are interpreted as the indication of toroidal mantle flows at different scales governing the slabs deformation and the surface kinematics., La tectonique actuelle et récente (~40 Ma) de la région Egée-Anatolie en fait un laboratoire naturel privilégié pour l'étude de la déformation continentale. L'analyse de la structure détaillée et de la déformation du manteau de cette zone de collision continentale immature constitue une étape indispensable pour comprendre les relations entre la cinématique de surface et la dynamique du manteau. La structure du manteau supérieur a été étudiée à l'échelle de la région en réalisant un modèle 3-D de la vitesse des ondes S par tomographie télésismique en ondes de surface. Les résolutions latérale (~100-200 km) et verticale (~50 km) des images obtenues, grâce à l'utilisation d'un réseau sismologique large bande composé de ~150 stations (permanentes et temporaires (expérience SIMBAAD), apporte de nouvelles contraintes sur la structure du manteau de la Grèce continentale à l'Anatolie centrale. Cette tomographie révèle notamment des corrélations verticales claires entre les géométries des déchirures affectant le slab Hellénique et celles des zones de cisaillement trans-tensives qui accommodent le mouvement rapide du bloc Egéen vers le SW. Le slab Chypriote est clairement imagé dans le modèle 3-D comme plissé et déchiré en plusieurs segments sous l'Anatolie. L'analyse de l'anisotropie azimutale par méthode de réseau sur les ondes de Rayleigh a permis de proposer l'existence de deux couches anisotropes dans le manteau supérieur. L'étude de variations latérales de l'anisotropie sous la région suggère que la déformation des slabs et la cinématique de surface sont contrôlées par des flux mantelliques toroïdaux de différentes échelles.

International audience; The present study proposes to estimate the influence of climate, eustatism and local tectonics on the sedimentation of a basin margin at the syn-rift to post-rift transition. For that, paleomagnetic measurements were performed on a marine marly-calcareous sedimentary succession ranging from Upper Oligocene to Lower Miocene and located on the northern margin of the Liguro-Provençal basin. The magnetostratigraphic record is correlated to the reference geomagnetic polarity scale [ATNTS04, Lourens et al. 2004] with the help of biostratigraphy based on calcareous nannofossils and planctonic foraminifers [Oudet et al., 2010]. The resulting age model shows that the 100 m-thick sedimentary succession covers a time span of 5 m.y. from the Late Chattian to the Early Burdigalian. Despite several exposure surfaces and a change in the sedimentation rate, no significant hiatus of sedimentation is documented. In addition, we also estimate the paleoenvironmental evolution through the sedimentary succession. Comparing the dated paleoenvironmental reconstruction with global {delta}18O and sea level curves [Miller et al., 2005], we show that the Carry-le-Rouet succession is an excellent paleoclimatic archive. Indeed, coral reefs developed at the glacial-interglacial stage transition marking the end of the Oligocene. In addition, the most diversified coral reefs occurred during the warmest period of the Aquitanian. During rifting, bathymetric variations recorded in the studied succession are related to local synsedimentary tectonics whereas, during oceanic crust accretion, global sea level changes influence the sedimentation. This dissertation presents the results and observations of an investigation on the long-term (Miocene to present) exhumation history of the Venezuelan Andes, and the relationships between inherited structures and development of topography in response to tectonic and surface processes. The Venezuelan Andes are ideal for understanding the relationships between these processes, because they have involved through inversion and reactivation of pre-existing structures, they are associated with a major climatic gradient due to the orograpic effect of the belt and extensive data is available concerning their recent tectonic evolution. This mountain belt is the result of transpression caused by oblique convergence of the continental Maracaibo block and the South America Plate, controlled, on a larger scale, by the triple junction between the South American, Caribbean and Nazca plates. The complex kinematics of triple plate interaction and the continuous evolution of related structures coupled with surface processes have profoundly affected the evolution of the Venezuelan Andes. An extensive low-temperature thermochronometer database composed of 47 new apatite fission-track (AFT) ages: 24 bedrock samples, 15 samples from synorogenic detrital sediments and 8 samples from modern rivers sediments is presented in this dissertation. The dataset is supplemented with 27 previously unpublished AFT bedrock ages and 10 revised AFT ages provided by B.P. Kohn. The AFT ages are converted into long-term exhumation rates using thermal modeling. Analyses of in-situ AFT data from seven tectonically delineated areas reveal variable exhumation patterns across the Venezuelan Andes. The Caparo and Valera blocks, which were separated by dextral movement along the Boconó strike-slip fault system, respectively have AFT ages ranging from 7 to 27 Ma, and 11 to 145 Ma, representing areas of relatively slow exhumation. In the central part of the Venezuelan Andes, AFT ages in the Sierra La Culata (5-8 Ma), El Carmen (2-3 Ma) and Sierra Nevada (5-8 Ma) blocks, record major recent exhumation in response to transpression and erosion along the Boconó fault system. To both sides of the chain, AFT ages in the Escalante block (5-6 Ma) on the far northern flank, and the Cerro Azul thrust block (5-8 Ma AFT age) on the southern flank provide evidence of significant compression, which produced the doubly vergent structure of the Venezuelan Andes during Late Miocene times. Fission-track analysis of detrital apatite from modern river samples permit a) verification and extrapolation of the bedrock cooling age patterns across the Venezuelan Andes, b) determination of sediment provenance, and c) analysis of relationships between exhumation rates and potential controlling factors. The results imply a strong correlation between relief and long-term exhumation rate but a lack of correlation between long-term exhumation rate and present-day precipitation or seismic energy release (measured during the last 20 years), indicating that the control of tectonic and/or climatic processes on exhumation cannot be discerned in a straightforward manner. Fission-track data from synorogenic sediments in the Maracaibo and Barinas foreland basins permit tracing the present-day exhumation patterns back to the Late Miocene. Rock-Eval analyses of sediments sampled show that Mio-Pliocene sediments in these basins have not been buried deeper than the AFT partial annealing zone in the studied sections. Young AFT ages in samples from the Parángula Formation on the south flank imply that this formation is probably of Tortonian age, significantly younger than previously suggested. The AFT data, together with pollen analyses, imply that the Pliocene Betijoque Formation to the north corresponds in age to the upper part of the Río Yuca Formation to the south of the Venezuelan Andes., Cette thèse présente les résultats d'une étude de l'histoire à long terme (Miocène – actuel) de l'exhumation des Andes vénézuéliennes, ses rapports avec des structures héritées et le développement de la topographie en réponse à la tectonique et les processus de surface. Les Andes vénézuéliennes constituent un exemple idéal pour étudier les rapports entre ces processus. Elles montrent des inversions et réactivations de structures pré-existantes et sont associées à un gradient climatique majeur dû à l'effet orographique de la chaîne. Par ailleurs, de nombreuses données sont disponibles concernant leur récente évolution tectonique. Cette chaîne de montagne résulte de la transpression causée par la convergence oblique du bloc continental de Maracaibo et de la plaque Amérique du Sud contrôlée, à plus grande échelle, par la jonction triple entre les plaques Amérique du Sud, Caraïbe et Nazca. La cinématique complexe de cette interaction triple et l'évolution continue des structures qui y sont liées, couplée avec les processus de surface, ont profondément affecté l'évolution des Andes vénézuéliennes. Une base de données thermochronologiques de basse température est présentée dans cette thèse, composée de 47 nouveaux âges par traces de fission sur apatite (AFT): 24 échantillons in-situ provenant du substratum rocheux, 15 échantillons de sédiments synorogéniques et 8 échantillons de sédiments de rivières actuelles. La base de données a été augmentée de 27 âges AFT du substratum rocheux et 10 âges AFT existants ont été révisés, ces derniers 37 âges ayant été fournis par B.P Kohn (Université de Melbourne, Australie). Les âges AFT ont été convertis en taux d'exhumation à long terme en utilisant des modélisations numériques de l'évolution thermique. Les analyses des données AFT in-situ ont permis de délimiter sept blocs tectoniques avec des histoires d'exhumation variables à travers les Andes Vénézuéliennes. Les blocs de Caparo et de Valera sur les deux extrémités de la chaîne, qui ont été séparés par le mouvement dextre de la faille du Boconó, montrent des âges entre 7 et 27 Ma et entre 11 et 145 Ma respectivement. Ces blocs représentent des zones d'exhumation relativement lente. Dans la partie centrale des Andes Vénézuéliennes, les âges AFT des blocs de la Sierra La Culata (5-8 Ma), d'El Carmen (2-3 Ma) et de la Sierra Nevada (5-8 Ma) enregistrent une exhumation majeure récente qui répond à la transpression et l'érosion au long du système de failles du Boconó. Sur les deux flancs de la chaîne, les âges AFT dans le bloc d'El Escalante (5-6 Ma) au nord, et le bloc chevauché du Cerro Azul (5-8 Ma âge AFT) au sud indiquent une phase de compression importante, à l'origine de la structure à double vergence des Andes vénézuéliennes, pendant le Miocène Supérieur. Les analyses AFT sur apatite détritique dérivé de l'échantillonnage des rivières actuelles ont permis a) d'extrapoler les âges in-situ à travers les Andes vénézuéliennes, b) de déterminer la provenance des sédiments, et c) d'analyser les rapports entre taux d'exhumation et les facteurs de contrôle potentiels. Les résultats indiquent une forte corrélation entre le relief et le taux d'exhumation à long terme mais une absence de corrélation entre les taux d'exhumation à long terme et les précipitations actuelles ou la libération d'énergie sismique (mesurées au cours des 20 dernières années), indiquant que le contrôle de la tectonique et / ou des processus climatiques sur l'exhumation ne peut être distingué d'une manière simple. L'analyse AFT sur des sédiments syn-orogéniques des bassins d'avant-pays de Maracaibo et de Barinas ont permis d'établir un schéma de l'exhumation depuis le Miocène tardif jusqu'à l'actuel. Des analyses Rock-Eval sur sédiments Mio-Pliocènes montrent que ces séries n'ont pas été enfouies plus profondément que la zone de recuit partiel des AFT (PAZ), au moins sur les sections étudiées. Des âges AFT jeunes dans des échantillons provenant de la Formation Parángula sur le flanc sud indiquent que cette formation a probablement un âge Miocène moyen, nettement plus jeune que précédemment admis. Les données AFT combinées avec des analyses palynologiques révèlent que la Formation Pliocène de Betijoque sur le flanc nord correspond à la partie supérieure de la Formation Río Yuca au sud des Andes vénézuéliennes.

in press; The western part of Ecuador is made of several oceanic terranes, which comprise two oceanic plateaus, of Early (≈ 120 Ma), and Late Cretaceous age (≈ 90 Ma), respectively. The older oceanic plateau was accreted to the andean margin in the Late Campanian (≈ 75 Ma). Fragments of the Turonian-Coniacian plateau were accreted to the ecuadorian margin in the Late Maastrichtian (≈ 68 Ma, Guaranda terrane) and Late Paleocene (≈ 58 Ma, Piñón-Naranjal terrane). The Guaranda terrane received either fine-grained oceanic sediments of Coniacian-Maastrichtian age, or island arc / back-arc volcanic suites of Middle Campanian-Middle Maastrichtian age. The Piñón-Naranjal terrane recorded a comparable history, completed in the Maastrichtian-Paleocene, either by pelagic cherts, or by island arc products (Macuchi arc). The Late Cretaceous plateau of Ecuador is interpreted as part of the Caribbean oceanic plateau (COP), because their evolutions are comparable. If so, the COP was not formed by the Galápagos hotspot, but on the Farallón oceanic plate, south of Ecuador and close to the South American margin. The COP belonged to the Farallón plate, until a subduction zone separated both plates in the Middle Campanian, giving way to a well developed Mid Campanian-Mid Maastrichtian island arc. Accretion in the Late Maastrichtian triggered a change in the subduction system, and the development of a new arc system of Late Maastrichtian-Late Paleocene age, which crosscut the South America-COP plate boundary. The last accretion occurred in the Late Paleocene.

The stratigraphic revision of the southern coastal ecuadorian series makes possible the reconstruction of the pre-collision history of the Caribbean Plateau accreted to the ecuadorian margin. The Coniacian age of the oceanic basement (Piñón Fm) indicates that the latter is part of the Caribbean oceanic plateau. It is overlain by the Calentura Fm, which comprises from base to top: (i) 20 to 200 m of lavas and volcanic breccias of arc affinity (Las Orquídeas Mb), (ii) siliceous, organic rich black limestones of (middle?) Coniacian age, (iii) red, radiolarian rich, calcareous cherts ascribed to the Santonian-early Campanian, and (iv) marls, greywackes and island arc tuffs of Mid Campanian age. The latter are overlain by volcaniclastic turbidites of Mid to Late Campanian age (Cayo Fm), coeval to the Campanian-Maastrichtian island arc series locate farther West (San Lorenzo Fm)., La révision stratigraphique des séries crétacées de la côte sud-équatorienne permet de préciser les principales étapes de l’histoire pré-accrétion du Plateau Caraïbe accrété à la marge équatorienne. L’âge Coniacien du substratum océanique (Fm Piñón) montre qu’il appartient au Plateau océanique Caraïbe. Il est surmonté par la Fm Calentura, constituée, de bas en haut, par (i) 20 à 200 m de laves et brèches volcaniques à signature d’arc (Mb Las Orquídeas), (ii) des calcaires siliceux riches en ma-tière organique datés du Coniacien (moyen ?), (iii) des cherts rouges calcaires à radiolaires attribués au Santonien-Campanien inférieur, et (iv) des marnes, grauwackes et tufs à géochimie d’arc, d’âge Campanien moyen. Ceux-ci sont surmontés par des turbidites volcano-clastiques datées du Campanien moyen et supérieur (Fm Cayo), équivalentes des laves de l’arc insulaire campano-maastrichtien situé plus à l’Ouest (Fm San Lorenzo). Le magmatisme du Mb Las Orquídeas est interprété comme issu, non d’une subduction éphémère, mais de la fusion du plateau caraïbe encore chaud. Le passage des calcaires coniaciens aux cherts santoniens serait lié à la subsidence thermique du Plateau Caraïbe. La surrection du Plateau Caraïbe et la naissance de l’arc insulaire San Lorenzo au Campanien moyen, pourraient être liées à la collision du plateau Caraïbe avec la marge du Mexique. La collision du Plateau Caraïbe avec la marge équato-rienne au début du Maastrichtien supérieur provoquerait la fin de l’activité de l’arc insulaire San Lo-renzo. Au Paléocène supérieur, le Plateau Caraïbe se scinde en deux, le terrain occidental (Piñón) se trouvant sous-charrié sous le terrain oriental (Guaranda).

International audience; Nine ERS-1 and ERS-2 descending orbit data acquired over Aira Caldera between June 1995 and November 1998 were used to create 36 differential interferograms. Although the interferograms exhibit a relatively low level of coherence, even for couples sampling short time intervals (6 months), Synthetique Aperture Radar (SAR) observations reveal a distinct range change pattern over Kokubu urban area whose amplitude increases with the time separation between SAR images. The analysis of the ground deformation time series relative to the earliest ERS images showed a maximum uplift of about 20 mm between the north and the south of the urban area during the period covered by our satellite observations. Taking the reduced surface of the coherent area into account, we performed a simple modeling of the deformation field assuming an inflating spherical source within an elastic half-space medium located beneath the centre of the Aira Caldera. This simple model predicts a maximum volume increase of 20–30×106 m3 between 1995 and 1998, which would produce an inflation of about 70 mm at the centre of the Aira Caldera and 40 mm in the Kokubu south urban area. These results are in good agreement with other geophysical observations carried out on the Aira caldera during this period. Despite the limited spatial extent of the coherent areas around the Aira Caldera, this study shows that DinSAR method using data collected in C band can be successfully used to detect subtle ground displacement changes of the volcanic complex and thus provides complementary information to ground-based geodetic monitoring of dynamic processes of the Aira Caldera and Sakurajima volcano.

The spreading history of the oceans is modelled mostly by using magnetic anomalies and the fracture zone geometry. The high-quality, satellite-derived gravity data, that became available in recent years, reveal the details of fracture zones, which can be used as flow lines to control spreading models. We have applied this approach to the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) in order to refine its spreading history. This is particularly useful for the period of complex spreading between magnetic anomalies 33 and 23, where the magnetic anomalies alone cannot resolve the detailed spreading history. We find four main stages in the spreading history of the SWIR since 96 Ma, including two that were not noted previously, between 96 Ma and anomaly 33 (76.3 Ma) and between anomalies 23o (51.7 Ma) and 18o (40.1 Ma; o denotes old boundaries of normal magnetization period). We also find that the start of the period of complex spreading was at anomaly 33, somewhat earlier than previously proposed. We discuss the characteristics of the extension that the old transform faults underwent during the complex spreading phase, in response to the counterclockwise rotation of spreading. New transform faults appeared at that time, considerably widening the transform zones.

International audience; We propose to explain the origin of the double trend in seismicity of the Macas swarm in the Subandean Cordillera of Cutucú (Ecuador) and characterize the corresponding active deformation of that region. For that purpose, seismological and geological data have been used, with the deployment of a temporary seismological array, with geological field observations and image processing. We found that some earthquakes are aligned on a well known NNE SSW trend corresponding to the orientation of the nodal planes of the reverse focal mechanism of the Mw=7.0 1995 Macas earthquake as for its aftershocks. Nevertheless, many smaller events are aligned on an unexpected NNW SSE trend inside the Cutucú Cordillera. We interpret these two orientations of the Macas swarm as linked to Subandean basement thrusts inherited from the inversion tectonics of a NNE SSW trending Triassic Jurassic rift, which has been uplifted and partly extruded in the Cutucú Cordillera. The present partitioning of this part of the Subandean deformation is controlled by pre-existing NNE SSW to NNW SSE Triassic Jurassic normal faults that have been subsequently compressed transpressed and reactivated into reverse faults. Major boundary faults of the rift were NNE SSW oriented and correspond now to some main Subandean thrusts as confirms the focal mechanism of the 1995 main shock located on the eastern border (Morona frontal thrust) and the orientation of its aftershocks. In the Cutucú Cordillera, the double orientation of present swarm can be interpreted as the result of accommodation of deformation along NNW SSE pre-existing faults inside the inverted rift system, linked to the motion of the Morona frontal NNE SSW thrust.

The patterns of localization of deformation in recrystallising materials are investigated via a series of two-dimensional grain-scale numerical simulations. These simulations couple a grain-size and strain dependant viscous rheology with grain size reduction and grain growth processes. The simulations are able to predict the mechanical, microstructural and strain evolution of the polycrystals to moderate strain, and allow us to examine the nature of the time dependent feedback between mechanical and microstructural behavior. It was found that significant strain localization occurred only when the grain size dependence of the viscosity was non-linear, and was greatly enhanced by the activity of the grain-size modifying processes. The intensity and location of the zone of strain localization varied spatially and temporally, and displayed two length and time scales, with the result that the finite strain state showed a much broader, and hence less intense, zone of localized deformation than the instantaneous state.
