The continuous development of superconducting electronics is encouraging several studies on hybrid Josephson junctions (JJs) based on superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (SFS) heterostructures, as either spintronic devices or switchable elements in quantum and classical circuits. Recent experimental evidence of macroscopic quantum tunneling and of an incomplete 0-$\ensuremath{\pi}$ transition in tunnel-ferromagnetic spin-filter JJs could also enhance the capabilities of SFS JJs as active elements. Here, we provide a self-consistent electrodynamic characterization of $\mathrm{Nb}\mathrm{N}$/$\mathrm{Gd}\mathrm{N}$/$\mathrm{Nb}\mathrm{N}$ spin-filter JJs as a function of the barrier thickness, disentangling the high-frequency dissipation effects due to the environment from the intrinsic low-frequency dissipation processes. The fitting of the $I$-$V$ characteristics at 4.2 K and at 300 mK by using the tunnel-junction-microscopic model allows us to determine the subgap resistance ${R}_{\mathrm{sg}}$, the quality factor $Q$, and the junction capacitance $C$. These results provide the scaling behavior of the electrodynamic parameters as a function of the barrier thickness, which represents a fundamental step for the feasibility of tunnel-ferromagnetic JJs as active elements in quantum and classical circuits, and are of general interest for tunnel junctions other than conventional SIS JJs.

The interfacial coupling of two materials with different ordered phases, such as a superconductor (S) and a ferromagnet (F) is driving new fundamental physics and innovative applications. For example, the creation of spin-filter Josephson junctions and the demonstration of triplet supercurrents have suggested the potential of a dissipationless version of spintronics based on unconventional superconductivity. Here we demonstrate evidence for active quantum applications of S-F-S junctions, through the observation of macroscopic quantum tunneling in Josephson junctions with GdN ferromagnetic insulator barriers. We prove a clear transition from thermal to quantum regime at a crossover temperature of about 100 mK at zero magnetic field in junctions which demonstrate a clear signature of unconventional superconductivity. Following previous demonstration of passive S-F-S phase shifters in a phase qubit, our result paves the way to the active use of spin filter Josephson systems in quantum hybrid circuits., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

A ferromagnetic Josephson junction (JJ) represents a special class of hybrid system where different ordered phases meet and generate novel physics. In this work we report on the transport measurements of underdamped ferromagnetic NbN/GdN/NbN JJs at low temperatures. In these junctions the ferromagnetic insulator gadolinium nitride barrier generates spin-filtering properties and a dominant second harmonic component in the current-phase relation. These features make spin filter junctions quite interesting also in terms of fundamental studies on phase dynamics and dissipation. We discuss the fingerprints of spin filter JJs, through complementary transport measurements, and their implications on the phase dynamics, through standard measurements of switching current distributions. NbN/GdN/NbN JJs, where spin filter properties can be controllably tuned along with the critical current density (J c ), turn to be a very relevant term of reference to understand phase dynamics and dissipation in an enlarged class of JJs, not necessarily falling in the standard tunnel limit characterized by low J c values.

Dissipation encodes the interaction of a quantum system with the environment and regulates the activation regimes of a Brownian particle. We have engineered grain boundary biepitaxial YBaCuO junctions to drive a direct transition from a quantum activated running state to a phase diffusion regime. The crossover to the quantum regime is tuned by the magnetic field and dissipation is described by a fully consistent set of junction parameters. To unravel phase dynamics in moderately damped systems is of general interest for advances in the comprehension of retrapping phenomena and in view of quantum hybrid technology.

We report a systematic study of the transport properties of high critical temperature superconductor (HTS) biepitaxial Josephson junctions in the submicron range. Junction performances point to more uniform and reproducible devices and to better control of d-wave intrinsic properties. Outcomes promote novel insights into the transport mechanisms across grain boundaries and encourage further developments in the control of dissipation in HTS devices. The application of nanotechnology to HTS could be an additional tool to properly engineer the junction properties to match specific circuit design also in view of the integration into hybrid quantum circuits. The Josephson effect is a probe of unparalleled performances in the study of a variety of macroscopic quantum phenomena. In the present article an overview of important achievements and challenging trends is given referring, in particular, to macroscopic quantum tunneling and energy level quantization. The attention is mainly addressed to high-TC superconducting structures and recent investigations concerning nanostructures.

We report on $\hbox{YBa}_{2}\hbox{Cu}_{3}\hbox{O}_{7-x} $ biepitaxial grain boundary Josephson junctions (JJs) demonstrating significant tunability of their circuital parameters. We show how the enhanced control of the junction properties, and particularly of the capacitance, leads to advances in the understanding of phase dynamics of high-critical-temperature superconductor JJs and potentially of their intrinsic dissipation mechanisms.

We have identified anomalous behavior of the escape rate out of the zero-voltage state in Josephson junctions with a high critical current density Jc. For this study we have employed YBa2Cu3O7-x grain boundary junctions, which span a wide range of Jc and have appropriate electrodynamical parameters. Such high Jc junctions, when hysteretic, do not switch from the superconducting to the normal state following the expected stochastic Josephson distribution, despite having standard Josephson properties such as a Fraunhofer magnetic field pattern. The switching current distributions (SCDs) are consistent with nonequilibrium dynamics taking place on a local rather than a global scale. This means that macroscopic quantum phenomena seem to be practically unattainable for high Jc junctions. We argue that SCDs are an accurate means to measure nonequilibrium effects. This transition from global to local dynamics is of relevance for all kinds of weak links, including the emergent family of nanohybrid Josephson junctions. We investigate the phase dynamics of moderately damped NbN/AlN/NbN Josephson junctions and we present experimental results on detailed aspects of phase diffusion processes. We measure both single escape and multiple escape and retrapping events obtaining a crossover temperature T* from Kramers to phase diffusion switching. We observe a clear dependence of the crossover temperature T* by the bias current ramp rate, while the damping factor Q remains the same. The measured effect is in strong agreement with theoretical predictions reported by Fenton and Warburton. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Coherent passage of Cooper pairs in a Josephson junction (JJ) above the liquid nitrogen temperature has been the first impressive revolutionary effect induced by high critical temperature superconductors (HTS) in the domain of the study of Josephson effect (JE). But this has been only the start. A d-wave order parameter has lead to significant novel insights in the physics of the JE turning into a device the notion of a ?-junction. Spontaneous currents in a frustrated geometry, Andreev bound states, long-range proximity effect have rapidly become standard terms in the study of the JE, standing as a reference bench for conventional systems based on low critical temperature superconductors (LTS) and inspiring analogies for junctions based on novel superconductors discovered in the meantime. The extreme richness of the physics of HTS JJs has not been adequately supported by the expected impact in the applications, the main reason lying in the complexity of these materials and in the consequent unsatisfactory yield and reproducibility of the performances of the JJs within the required limits. The continuous progress in material science, and specifically in the realization of oxide multi-layers, and in nanotechnologies applied to superconductors, accompanied by the advances in a better understanding of the properties of HTS and of HTS devices, has as a matter of fact opened possible novel scenarios and interest in the field. We intend to give a brief overview on interesting new problems concerning HTS JJs of inspiration also for other systems. We also review some ideas and experimental techniques on macroscopic quantum decay phenomena occurring in Josephson structures. The attention is mainly addressed to intermediate levels of dissipation, which characterize a large majority of low critical current Josephson devices and are therefore an unavoidable consequence of nanotechnology applied more and more to Josephson devices.

The Josephson effect is a privileged access to the macroscopic quantum nature of superconductors. We review some ideas and experimental techniques on macroscopic quantum decay phenomena occurring in Josephson structures. The attention is mainly addressed to intermediate levels of dissipation which characterize a large majority of low critical current Josephson devices and are therefore an avoidable consequence of nanotechnology applied more and more to Josephson devices. Phase diffusion phenomena take over thermal activation in some temperature ranges also affecting the transition to macroscopic quantum tunneling, enriching the phase diagram mostly defined by the Josephson energy, the temperature and the level of dissipation.

By attributing a circulating Josephson current induced diamagnetic moment to a SQUID-type three-level qubit, a wireless connection between such qubits is proposed based only on dipole-dipole interaction between their moments. The estimates of the model parameters suggest quite an optimistic possibility to experimentally realize the suggested coupling scheme., Accepted for publication in PRA

By means of numerical simulations we study the dynamics of the phase difference in faceted long Josephson junctions. We compare our simulations with experiments on a sample of high quality high-Tc biepitaxial junctions. Adjusting junction length and dissipation to reproduce the observed data we found a significant agreement, which permits to identify the observed resonances mostly as Eck steps. Some considerations are also made on the requirements to observe flux-flow or Fiske resonances in these junctions.

Here we present the direct observation of macroscopic quantum properties in an all high-critical-temperature superconductor d-wave Josephson junction. Although dissipation caused by low-energy excitations is expected to strongly suppress macroscopic quantum effects, we demonstrate energy level quantization in our d-wave Josephson junction. The result indicates that the role of dissipation mechanisms in high-temperature superconductors has to be revised, and it may also have consequences for the class of solid-state “quiet” quantum bits with superior coherence time.

The escape rate from the zero voltage state in a superconducting Josephson junction (JJ) is determined by the temperature, but it saturates at low temperature due to macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT). Complications due to d-wave symmetry in a high temperature superconductor, like low energy quasi- particles and an unconventional current-phase relation, may influence the escape rate. We report, for the first time to our knowledge, the observation of MQT in a YBa2Cu3O7 grain boundary biepitaxial JJ. This proves that dissipation can be significantly reduced by a proper junction configuration, which is of significance for quantum coherence.

The effect of a perpendicular magnetic field on a disordered two‐dimensional Josephson junction array (JJA) is analyzed using numerical simulation of full mutual inductance array equations. Disordered JJA can represent either itself or a model for granular high‐Tc disordered thin films. In usual zero field cooling conditions and absence of disorder the field penetrate the sample following a Bean critical state model. Using a simple technique it is also possible to obtain the whole 3D field map around the array. It can be shown that disorder induces a scattering of flux lines giving rise to some flux penetration into the sample. The 3D field can be used to produce 2D images of the field intensity to be compared with existing magnetic imaging techniques. We briefly discuss the comparison of simulated images with existing imaging experiments, as SQUID Scanning Microscopy (SSM) and Magneto‐Optical techniques (MO).

A novel dynamical state has been observed in the dynamics of a perturbed sine-Gordon system. This resonant state has been experimentally observed as a singularity in the dc current-voltage characteristic of an annular Josephson tunnel junction, excited in the presence of a magnetic field. In this respect it can be assimilated to self-resonances known as Fiske steps. Differently from these, however, we demonstrate, on the basis of numerical simulations, that its detailed dynamics involves rotating fluxon pairs, a mechanism associated, so far, to self-resonances known as zero-field steps. This occurs because the size of nonlinear excitations is comparable with that of the system.

Several studies have compared bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) as stem cell sources in patients receiving allografts, but the cell doses infused have not been considered, especially for BM. Using the ALWP/EBMT registry, we retrospectively studied 881 adult patients with acute myelocytic leukemia (AML), who received a non-T-depleted allogeneic BM (n = 515) or mobilized PB (n = 366) standard transplant, in first remission (CR1), from an HLA-identical sibling, over a 5-year period from January 1994. The BM cell dose ranged from 0.17 to 29 × 108/kg with a median of 2.7 × 108/kg. The PB cell dose ranged from 0.02 to 77 × 10 8/kg with a median of 9.3 × 108/kg. The median dose for patients receiving BM (2.7 × 108/kg) gave the greatest discrimination. In multivariate analyses, high-dose BM compared to PB was associated with lower transplant-related mortality (RR = 0.61; 95% CI, 0.39-0.98; P = .04), better leukemia-free survival (RR = 0.65; 95% CI, 0.46-0.91; P = .013), and better overall survival (RR = 0.64; 95% CI, 0.44-0. 92; P = .016). The present study in patients with AML receiving allografts in first remission indicates a better outcome with BM as compared to PB, when the dose of BM infused is rich. © 2003 by The American Society of Hematology.

Many experiments on high-temperature superconductors have shown paramagnetic behavior when the sample is field cooled. The paramagnetism was first attributed to a d-wave order parameter creating pi-junctions in the samples. However, the same effect was later discovered in traditional low-temperature superconductors and conventional Josephson-junction arrays which are s-wave. By simulating both conventional and mixed pi/conventional Josephson-junction arrays we determine that differences exist which may be sufficient to clearly identify the presence (or absence) of pi-junctions. In particular the pi-junctions cause a symmetry breaking providing a measurable signature of their presence in sample., 12 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.Lett

In the last few years the return current, i.e., the value of the bias current where an hysteretic Josephson junction switches back to zero voltage state, has obtained interest in view of its connections with the evaluation of losses for macroscopic quantum coherence experiments and the following development of q-bit devices. Here we study carefully the problem of the return current by means of numerical simulations of associated Langevin equations in both very small and intermediate length Josephson junctions. Comparison with theoretical lifetime, fluctuations, and recent experiments are carefully carried out. The results show that the effects of finite length are important in the correct description of the return switch.

Recent considerations on the physics of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ films made possible explaining their transport properties as flow of supercurrents through links between the granular structure of the film. The present work deals with the analysis of the Josephson junction network as a discrete set of parallel junctions (1D array) in quasi-static conditions and is aimed to compare the results of the simulations with the experimental findings, in particular with the plateau-like features in the critical current dependence on the magnetic field. Different regimes and vortex phases have been individuated and discussed.

A connection between the disorder in the critical currents of two-dimensional arrays of Josephson junctions and the amount of phase-locking of a row to an external microwave signal is proposed. We have computed the probability of phase-locking as a function of the spread of the critical currents of the individual junctions. The analytic results are in good agreement with numerical simulations. The predictions can be also qualitatively compared to the experiments.

In this paper we investigate the behavior of moderate size two-dimensional classical arrays of Josephson junctions in presence of an external oscillating field. We have included in the model the effects due to mutual inductance terms, and we have employed an explicit set of differential equations. We have found that the discretization parameter βL - i.e. the coupling term due to the inductance of the loops - is the most important parameter to determine the height of the Shapiro steps for a given amplitude and frequency of the rf-bias. The amplitude of the Shapiro steps in the case of zero frustration as a function of the coupling term shows a remarkable minimum for intermediate values when we retain all terms of the full model with mutual inductances, while the limits for very large and very small values of βL they are the same of the single Josephson junction. For the case of frustration 1/2 the Shapiro step becomes smaller in the rigid limit (i.e., small βL as expected for the XY model, and tends to the limit value of the single junctions for the decoupled case (i.e., large βL).

We evaluate how the curvature dependence of surface tension affects the shape of electrically charged interfaces between a perfectly conducting fluid and its vapour. We consider two cases: i) spherical droplets in equilibrium with their vapour; ii) menisci pending in a capillary tube in presence of a conducting plate at given electric potential drop. Tolman-like dependence of surface tension on curvature becomes important when the "nucleation radius" is comparable with the interface curvature radius. In case i) we prove existence of the equilibrium minimal radius and estimate its dependence on the electric field and Tolmanlike curvature effects. In case ii) the menisci are subject to the gravitational force, surface tension and electrostatic fields We determine the unknown surface of the menisci to which the potential is assigned using an iterative numerical method and show that Tolman-like corrections imply: 1) a variation of the height (up to 10% in some cases) of the tip of the menisci; 2) a decrease of the maximum electrical potential applicable to the menisci before their breakdown amounting to 40V over 800V in the considered cases. Two-dimensional square arrays of short Josephson junctions are investigated using a model which includes both the lumped Josephson circuit elements and an equivalent inductance for the superconducting loops. We have supposed that all junction parameters and the inductances are identical. The analysis of the Gibbs thermodynamic potential shows the existence of energy barriers for a basic process for the diamagnetic behavior of the array: The motion of a flux quantum in the interior of the array. These barriers have been numerically evaluated as a function of the array parameters. The effect of the bias current is discussed and the critical current of the array has been estimated.

Suppression of temporal phase locked chaos in the perturbed sine-Gordon system is demonstrated by numerical simulations of the full equation in the presence of two harmonic signals. Results have been compared with a simple perturbative approach for the soliton dynamics.

We report on measurements of the switching current probability both in the thermal and quantum regime on moderately damped NbN / MgO / NbN Josephson junctions with very low critical current density (’ 2 A / cm 2 ). We observed three distinct regimes: below 90 mK the width of the switching distributions is constant within the experimental error, while from 90 mK to 1.6 K the width increases with temperature, this change of behavior signaling the standard transition from macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) to thermal activation (TA) regime respectively. Above 1.6 K we find effects of anti-correlation between the bath temperature and thermal fluctuations since the width of the histograms starts to collapse, and indications of a transition to a third regime called Phase Diffusion (PD) are evident, such as the change of the switching distributions symmetry. Experimental data have been analyzed through numerical fitting of the switching probability and Monte Carlo simulations, and we found a good agreement with theoretical expectations based on multiple re-trapping processes, which strongly depend on the junction damping. The parameters which completely characterize the dynamics of such moderately damped Josephson junctions have been also extracted.

We report on the study of the phase dynamics of high critical temperature superconductor Josephson junctions. We realized YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) grain boundary (GB) biepitaxial junctions in the submicron scale, using low loss substrates, and analyzed their dissipation by comparing the transport measurements with Monte Carlo simulations. The behavior of the junctions can be fitted using a model based on two quality factors, which results in a frequency dependent damping. Moreover, our devices can be designed to have Josephson energy of the order of the Coulomb energy. In this unusual energy range, phase delocalization strongly influences the device's dynamics, promoting the transition to a quantum phase diffusion regime. We study the signatures of such a transition by combining the outcomes of Monte Carlo simulations with the analysis of the device's parameters, the critical current and the temperature behavior of the low voltage resistance $R_0$., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures
