Feed intake, methane and feed efficiency have important genetic correlations with growth, carcase weights and mature size that need to be considered when breeding for production whilst reducing feed requirements and methane production in the Australian sheep industry. Live weight, growth, fat and muscle have significant antagonistic relationships with feed intake, which may make simultaneous selection for efficiency traits and, growth and meat quality slower. For example, selecting animals that grow faster is known to reduce meat-eating quality. Therefore, we estimated the genetic and phenotypic correlations between feed intake, residual feed intake, methane, carbon dioxide, oxygen, live weight, growth, fat and muscle depth traits. Fat and muscle depth were corrected for live weight. Traits were recorded on Merino sheep (n = 2 717) in Western Australia between 2010 and 2016. Sheep were measured at postweaning (range 753–2 717 records across traits), hogget (∼18 months old; range 602–1 046) and adult ages (>2 years old; range 269–443). Live weight and growth rate had significant moderate to high positive genetic correlations with feed intake, residual feed intake, methane and carbon dioxide at postweaning, hogget and adult ages. Fat and muscle depth measured at the start and finish of the feed intake measurement period generally had negative genetic correlations with residual feed intake, feed intake and methane. These genetic correlations with feed intake and residual feed intake were more negative with fat and muscle measured at the start of the measurement period than at the end. Furthermore, in young sheep, selecting for lower feed intake and residual feed intake will mean a lower change in fat between the start and finish of the intake period. Fat and muscle had significant correlations with feed efficiency and greenhouse gas traits and should therefore be considered when estimating residual feed intake, particularly in young animals.

Limited research has suggested that higher lambing densities increase interference from foreign ewes at lambing which disrupts the ewe-lamb bond and compromises lamb survival. This may be particularly evident in mobs of twin-bearing ewes compared to single-bearing ewes because a greater number of lambs are born per day. Therefore, we hypothesised that; (i) decreasing the mob size of ewes at lambing has a greater impact on the survival of twin-born lambs than single-born lambs; (ii) the relationship between mob size and lamb survival can be explained by differences in the rate of interaction with foreign ewes and lambs at lambing; and (iii) ewes will utilise a limited area of the paddock at lambing and thus lambing density will be defined by the distribution of ewes in the paddock rather than the paddock area. Merino ewes were allocated into a 2×2 factorial combination of ewe pregnancy status (single- or twin-bearing) and mob size (high (n=130 ewes) or low (n=50 ewes)) on day 140 from the start of joining. Each treatment had two replicates excepting the low mob size for twins which had a third replicate. Ewes lambed at a stocking rate of 11 ewes/ha. Feed-on-offer during lambing exceeded 2400 kg dry matter (DM)/ha. Ewe-lamb behaviour was observed and dead lambs were autopsied over 11 days during the peak of lambing. The distribution of ewes in each paddock was recorded every 2 h during daylight hours by counting the number of ewes occupying 2500 m2 grids. The proportion of ewes and their newborn progeny which interacted with foreign ewes at lambing did not differ between the high and low mob sizes for single- (24.9% v. 20.8%) or twin-bearing ewes (14.3% v. 19.6%; P=0.74). Similarly, interaction with foreign lambs did not differ between the high and low mob sizes for single- (14.5% v. 25.2%) and twin-bearing ewes (34.5% v. 26.4%; P=0.44). The distribution of ewes within the paddock did not differ between treatments (P=0.95). On average, single-bearing ewes which lambed at the high and low mob sizes occupied 34% and 36% of the paddock during daylight hours, and the corresponding values for twin-bearing ewes were 40% and 43%. A high-resolution method has been developed for the determination of localized values of interfacial reaction rate and mass transfer coefficient in aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy has been successfully applied to this problem through the measurement of electroplated film thickness formed under limiting current conditions. The method involves the calculation of local values of reaction rate via Faraday's laws and subsequent conversion of the data to absolute values of mass transfer coefficient. The technique has been verified in an undisturbed, turbulent flow regime (rotating cylinder electrode) through the use of Sherwood group dimensionless analysis. The resulting relationship shows comparable accuracy relative to electrochemical measurements. Favourable comparison has also been made with the generally accepted rotating cylinder correlation of Eisenberg, Tobias and Wilke. Differential rates of mass transfer to a single surface under conditions of disturbed flow have also been examined at a high spatial resolution using the stepped rotating cylinder electrode geometry. In this case, reaction rates have been measured as a function of circumferential distance within a recirculation zone situated immediately downstream of a backward-facing step.
