Abstract

The bovine tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus causes major losses in cattle production systems in tropical regions. Bos indicus breeds are more resistant to ticks than B. taurus breeds. Resistance genes could be an alternative to control this parasite. We examined the pattern of gene expression of three calcium-binding-protein genes: translationally controlled tumor protein 1 (TPT1), allergen Bos d3 (S100A7), calcium channel protein transient receptor potential vanilloid 6 (TRPV6), and the cysteine proteinase inhibitor gene (CST6). These genes were selected from cDNA libraries prepared from skin biopsies taken from resistant and susceptible Gyr x Holstein F₂ animals. These biopsies were also used to study the expression level of these genes through real-time PCR analysis. The relative expression levels of the S100A7, TPT1, TRPV6, and CST6 genes were 2.01 ± 0.6, 1.32 ± 0.9, 1.53 ± 1.2, and 2.03 ± 0.7 times higher in the susceptible group, respectively. Skin lesion tissue from the susceptible animals showed significantly more mRNA transcripts of these genes in comparison with the resistant animals (P = 0.001). However, this hypersensitivity does not seem to protect the susceptible animals against tick infestation.

Abstract

The purpose of this prospective study was to determine whether tumor ploidy or S-phase fraction measurements were of prognostic value in predicting short-term recurrence for colorectal carcinoma. A total of 52 patients underwent curative resection of colorectal carcinoma. Fresh suspensions of tumor cells were used for flow cytometric analysis. Patients underwent follow-up for possible recurrence, which then was related to ploidy status, S-phase fraction measurement, adjuvant therapy received, and Dukes stage. Disease-free probability was determined using Kaplan-Meier actuarial curves for various subgroups of the study populations. Results revealed that elevated S-phase fraction (>16%) did predict for a higher probability of recurrence in those patients receiving no postoperative adjuvant treatment. Among patients receiving postoperative adjuvant therapy, however, a higher S-phase fraction predicted for a lower probability of recurrence. These data suggest that the S-phase fraction does predict for disease-free probability and also predict response to adjuvant therapy in patients with colorectal carcinoma.

Abstract

The article presents a study which aims to measure the retention and absorption of vitamin B 12 from milk in pre-ruminant lambs as well as the effect of the activation of metabolic pathways in tissue concentration. According to the article, newborn lambs were divided into two groups, with the other given milk substitute alone while the other with added proportion by up to four weeks. In addition, it affirms that lambs that are being administered with the vitamins in the liver and plasma at a marginal range were able to maintain normal concentrations.

Abstract

The article presents a survey of plasma and liver mineral concentrations and enzyme activities in ostriches under farmed conditions in New Zealand. Results showed that plasma concentrations were within the normal range observed in the literature for ratite species. It was observed that copper concentrations in plasma were lower but higher in liver. Although aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and creatine kinase (CK) are higher compared to those literature from South Africa, the author concludes that they were normal and were only a reflection of the high growth rates of the musculoskeletal system.

29. Analysis of corrinoids in ovine tissues.

Abstract

Corrinoids from various ovine tissue samples (liver, blood, small intestinal fluid and faeces) were analysed using a combination of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and a radioisotope dilution assay (RIDA) to estimate the distribution of corrinoids-the cobalamins hydroxocobalamin (OH-cbl), methylcobalamin (me-cbl) and 5′-deoxyadenosylcobalamin (ado-cbl), and cobalamin analogues-in these tissues. Samples were taken from either cobalt-deficient or cobalt-replete ewes, and ruminant and pre-ruminant lambs. In liver, ado-cbl predominated, followed by analogues, OH-cbl and me-cbl. Supplementation with either cobalt (ruminant) or vitamin B12 injections (pre-ruminant) increased the amount of ado-cbl and decreased analogues. In blood, OH-cbl predominated, followed by ado-cbl, analogues and me-cbl, respectively. In small intestinal fluid, the distribution from largest to smallest percentage was analogues, ado-cbl, OH-cbl and me-cbl. In faeces, analogues constituted the greatest proportion, followed by OH-cbl, ado-cbl and me-cbl, respectively. Owing to the small sample sizes only cautionary interpretations can be made. In contrast to humans, where me-cbl constitutes the highest proportion of corrinoids in plasma and ado-cbl in the liver, in sheep the amount of ado-cbl was consistently higher than me-cbl in all tissues. This may be due to the higher metabolic need of sheep for ado-cbl due to gluconeogenesis. Analogues and OH-cbl were found in each tissue, contrary to previous postulations. The much higher amount of vitamin B12 in small intestinal fluid compared with faeces indicates that a large proportion of the vitamin is absorbed by the gastro-intestinal tract. 50. Aspirations, education and inequality in England

Abstract

The concept of aspiration is central to current policy debates about educational and social inequality in the UK. Although aspirations have long been of interest to social scientists there is still uncertainty about how much aspirations influence outcomes and the factors that shape educational and occupational aspirations. I contribute to this policy debate and area of study by examining in detail the mechanisms that shape aspirations and the meaning that young people attach to them. It is often claimed that disadvantaged young people suffer from 'poverty of aspirations'. Contrary to such claims, my findings show that the vast majority of students hold high aspirations for pursuing further academic qualifications, including those from highly disadvantaged backgrounds. I therefore question the grounds for treating 'poverty of aspirations' as a major social problem that should be tackled through interventions designed to raise them. In this mixed methods study I draw on both quantitative and qualitative sources of data. The quantitative data is from the Effective Provision Pre-school, Primary and Secondary Education project (EPPSE). I examine the factors that are predictive of students holding high aspirations at the age of 14. The qualitative data I draw on is from twenty-nine semi-structured interviews with 16-18 years old from a sixth form college in East London. I contribute to the literature by showing in detail how aspirations are shaped by individual, family, school and neighbourhood level processes. In particular, I also show how important family life is in shaping aspirations and that in order to understand aspirations we should focus on the meaning young people attach to them. My findings suggest that our current models of aspirations are in need of refinement because they underestimate how high the aspirations of young people are and therefore struggle to explain how they are related to students' social backgrounds.
