Antimicrobial resistance mediated by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)- and plasmid-mediated cephalosporinase (AmpC)-producing Enterobacterales, as well as carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales have globally increased among companion animals, posing a potential health risk to humans in contact with them. This prospective longitudinal study investigates the transfer of ESBL/AmpC- and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales between companion animals and their cohabitant humans in Portugal (PT) and the United Kingdom (UK) during animal infection. Fecal samples and nasal swabs collected from dogs and cats with urinary tract infection (UTI) or skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI), and their cohabitant humans were screened for resistant strains. Relatedness between animal and human strains was established by whole-genome sequencing (WGS). ESBL/AmpC-producing Enterobacterales were detected in companion animals (PT = 55.8%; UK = 36.4%) and humans (PT = 35.9%; UK = 12.5%). Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales carriage was observed in one dog from Portugal (2.6%) and another dog from the UK (4.5%). Transmission of index clinical ESBL-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae strains to cohabitant humans was observed in three Portuguese households (6.9%, n = 43), with repeated isolation of the index strains on fecal samples from the animals and their cohabiting humans. In addition, longitudinal sharing of E. coli strains carried by companion animals and their owners was observed in other two Portuguese households and two households from the UK. Furthermore, a multidrug-resistant ACT-24-producing Enterobacter hormaechei subsp. hoffmannii strains were also shared within another Portuguese household. These results highlight the importance of the household as an epidemiological unit in the efforts to mitigate the spread of antimicrobial resistance, further emphasizing the need for antimicrobial surveillance in this context, capable of producing data that can inform and evaluate public health actions.

The so-called Euro-Atlantic provisions have been inserted into the Georgian constitution in 2018 and aim “to ensure the full integration of Georgia into the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization“. The Georgian draft law ‘On Transparency of Foreign Influence’, the so-called ‘Russian Law 2.0’, is likely to be contrary to those Euro-Atlantic provisions in the Georgian Constitution. Georgia has EU candidate status since late 2023. According to statements by EU representatives, the law is incompatible with Georgia’s EU aspirations. If the law is passed by Parliament, despite ongoing pro-Western protests in the streets of Tbilisi, it remains to be seen what the constitutional Court will make of it, and whether Russian influence can be contained by the Court, which is itself, under pro-Russian political influence.

This paper is part of a line of research devoted to developing a compositional and geometric theory of Group Equivariant Non-Expansive Operators (GENEOs) for Geometric Deep Learning. It has two objectives. The first objective is to generalize the notions of permutants and permutant measures, originally defined for the identity of a single “perception pair”, to a map between two such pairs. The second and main objective is to extend the application domain of the whole theory, which arose in the set-theoretical and topological environments, to graphs. This is performed using classical methods of mathematical definitions and arguments. The theoretical outcome is that, both in the case of vertex-weighted and edge-weighted graphs, a coherent theory is developed. Several simple examples show what may be hoped from GENEOs and permutants in graph theory and how they can be built. Rather than being a competitor to other methods in Geometric Deep Learning, this theory is proposed as an approach that can be integrated with such methods.

A successful outcome of a post-surgical wound infection management by a carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae is described in a dog. Four multidrug-resistant and carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli strains belonging to ST410 (n = 1) and ST648 (n = 3) were isolated from faecal samples and nasal swabs of this dog at admission to a veterinary hospital in the United Kingdom, and one month after discharge. Whole-genome sequencing analysis suggests dissemination of a 46,161-bp IncX3 blaNDM-5-carrying plasmid among E. coli strains from the different lineages. In this study, the E. coli ST648 strains were virtually identical to each other (5 SNPs difference) indicating dissemination and persistence of this clone over time and across different anatomical sites in the same dog maybe due to the prolonged antimicrobial therapy. The carbapenemase carrying plasmid also showed homology with other publicly available plasmid sequences from Asian countries. These results suggests that plasmids may be a major vehicle in mediating the dissemination of carbapenem-resistance. Further studies investigating the selection and flow of plasmids carrying important resistance genes amongst companion animals are needed as it may further contaminate other environments posing a threat to public health.

Rotor bar breakage in induction motors is often detected by analysing the signatures in the stator current. However, due to the alteration of the current spectrum, traditional methods may fail when inverter-fed motors operate with closed-loop control using a cascade structure to regulate the speed. In this paper, the potential of zero-sequence voltage analysis to detect this fault is investigated, and a new index to quantify the severity of the fault based on this signal is proposed. Signals from motors operating under different control strategies and signals from motors powered from the mains are considered to verify the robustness of the proposed fault severity index. As a result, in all the analysed conditions the value of the proposed index for the healthy motor is found to be approximately 0.010, while for the faulty machine it is between 0.110 and 0.252.

The cow–calf bonding is a process that must be developed within the first six hours after calving. Both the buffalo dam and the newborn calf receive a series of sensory cues during calving, including olfactory, tactile, auditory, and visual stimuli. These inputs are processed in the brain to develop an exclusive bond where the dam provides selective care to the filial newborn. The limbic system, sensory cortices, and maternal-related hormones such as oxytocin mediate this process. Due to the complex integration of the maternal response towards the newborn, this paper aims to review the development of the cow–calf bonding process in water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) via the olfactory, tactile, auditory, and visual stimuli. It will also discuss the neuroendocrine factors motivating buffalo cows to care for the calf using examples in other ruminant species where dam–newborn bonding has been extensively studied.

In this article, we propose a topological model to encode partial equivariance in neural networks. To this end, we introduce a class of operators, called P-GENEOs, that change data expressed by measurements, respecting the action of certain sets of transformations, in a non-expansive way. If the set of transformations acting is a group, we obtain the so-called GENEOs. We then study the spaces of measurements, whose domains are subjected to the action of certain self-maps and the space of P-GENEOs between these spaces. We define pseudo-metrics on them and show some properties of the resulting spaces. In particular, we show how such spaces have convenient approximation and convexity properties.

Sampling animals for carriage of meticillin-resistant, coagulase-positive staphylococci (MRCoPS), considered zoonotic pathogens, can be challenging and time-consuming. Developing methods to identify mecA from non-invasive samples, e.g., faeces, would benefit AMR surveillance and management of MRS carrier animals. This study aimed to distinguish MRS carriers from non-carriers from faecal samples using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for mecA. Paired faecal and nasal swab samples (n = 86) were obtained from 13 dogs and 20 humans as part of a longitudinal study. Nasal MRCoPS carriage (either MR-Staphylococcus aureus or MR-Staphylococcus pseudintermedius was confirmed by identification of species (nuc) and meticillin resistance (mecA) (PCR). Faecal DNA (n = 69) was extracted and a qPCR method was optimised to provide a robust detection method. The presence of faecal mecA was compared between MRS carriers and non-carriers (Kruskal–Wallis test). Nasal swabbing identified seven canine and four human MRCoPS carriers. mecA was detected in 13/69 faecal samples, including four MRCoPS carriers and nine non-carriers. For dogs, there was no significant association (p = 1.000) between carrier status and mecA detection; for humans, mecA was more commonly detected in MRCoPS carriers (p = 0.047). mecA was detected in faeces of MRCoPS carriers and non-carriers by qPCR, but larger sample sizes are required to determine assay sensitivity. This rapid method enables passive surveillance of mecA in individuals and the environment.

It is imperative that decision-makers recognize when the intensity of human interference in regard to forest losses may result in adverse conditions for water ecosystem services. Several studies have indicated that defining thresholds is appropriate for indicating the ideal relationship between natural ecosystems and land uses in such a way as to ensure ecosystem service supply, but this knowledge is not readily available for different water services. To predict tipping points of change in the availability of seven water-related services, we assessed 11 catchments with different proportions of natural forests (Brazilian cerradão) and eucalyptus plantations. We analyzed water samples for 13 physical–chemical–biological parameters, which by specific aggregation functions define indices for each water service. We applied the piecewise model to evaluate the relationships between water service indices and natural forest cover. The results indicated that the highest potential gains occurred above 45% of forest. Landscapes with less than 20% natural forests tended to become unsustainable in maintaining services. Erosion control had a higher correlation with the decrease in natural forests.

Abstract Background The practice of mixing unfamiliar pigs on farms is common but results in fighting, welfare problems and performance issues. Pigs have different ways of resolving social conflicts, including aggressive and affiliative behaviours. Synthetic appeasing pheromones have demonstrated many positive effects in animal husbandry and are regularly used by breeders to improve animal welfare and performance. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of a new method of applying pig appeasing-pheromone (PAP) to the withers in an experimental model of pig mixing to determine whether PAP reduced aggression and fighting, increased prosocial behaviours, and improved behavioural and physiological indicators of welfare. Results PAP reduced fighting between mini-pigs (df = 1; F = 13.47; P = 0.001; mixed logistic regression). Even if not significant, agonistic behaviours tended to be reduced when the treatment was applied (df = 1; F = 4.14; P = 0.058; mixed logistic regression). Likewise, mini-pigs seemed to be scored as not aggressive at all (df = 1; F = 3.61; P = 0.070; GLMM) and to be less aggressive toward the other pig than when placebo was applied. Concerning the latency of the first contact without aggression, a significant effect was found between the PAP and placebo groups (df = 1; χ 2 = 4.74; P = 0.0295; Cox model). Moreover, even if not significant, the treated mini-pigs seemed to spent more time looking at each other (df = 1; F = 3.59; P = 0.071; GLMM) and immobile and/or ground sniffing (df = 1; F = 3.18; P = 0.088; GLMM) than those that received placebo. No significant difference was found between groups for salivary cortisol concentration (df = 1; F = 0.10; P = 0.752; GLMM), but variances between groups were heterogeneous at every time. No significant difference was found between groups regarding alpha-amylase activity (df = 1; F = 0.25; P = 0.621; GLMM), but variances between groups were heterogeneous at T0, T1 and T3. These results indicate that the variability (dispersion) within each group was lower when PAP was applied than when the placebo was applied. Conclusions The new method of applying PAP improved welfare of mini-pigs (as models of domestic pigs) by reducing fighting, among other interesting results. PAP seems thus a promising biomimetic tool to enhance animal welfare in pig production systems.

As she reviewed participant feedback from the out-of-school time (OST) youth development program she managed at the New-York Historical Society Museum and Library (N-YHS), the author was excited to recognize a pattern. Many of the teen participants wrote responses like "I am proud of what my team was able to accomplish" and "I enjoyed being able to plan an event on our own and actually see it happen." These participants were reflecting a high level of ownership of their accomplishments in the program. The N-YHS OST program already had assessments to collect the kinds of outcomes research has shown to result from participation in youth development programs: academic success, initiative, personal responsibility, and the like. What they didn't have was a system for measuring whether the program improved participants' sense of agency. Using instruments she designed herself, the author found that participants in the N-YHS program who reported a moderate to high degree of perceived agency also reported improved academic, personal, and social skills over the course of their program--more than their peers who perceived lower levels of agency. Participants who experienced agency also expressed their engagement with the program. In this paper, the author describes the program, provides context from the literature for the significance of agency, outlines the methods used to measure participants' sense of agency, and describes how perceived agency correlated with intended program outcomes and with youth engagement. Finally, she shares lessons learned that OST practitioners can use.

In birds, parental care and attachment period differ widely depending on the species (altricial or precocial), developmental strategies, and life history traits. In most bird species, parental care can be provided by both female and male individuals and includes specific stages such as nesting, laying, and hatching. During said periods, a series of neuroendocrine responses are triggered to motivate parental care and attachment. These behaviors are vital for offspring survival, development, social bonding, intergenerational learning, reproductive success, and ultimately, the overall fitness and evolution of bird populations in a variety of environments. Thus, this review aims to describe and analyze the behavioral and endocrine systems of parental care and newborn attachment in birds during each stage of the post-hatching period.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that leads to the loss of cognitive functions due to the deterioration of brain tissue. Current diagnostic methods are often invasive or costly, limiting their widespread use. Developing non-invasive and cost-effective screening methods is crucial, especially for identifying patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) at the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. This study employs a Machine Learning (ML) approach, specifically K-means clustering, on a subset of pixels common to all magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images to rapidly classify subjects with AD and those with normal Normal Cognitive (NC). In particular, we benefited from defining significant pixels, a narrow subset of points (in the range of 1.5% to 6% of the total) common to all MRI images and related to more intense degeneration of white or gray matter. We performed K-means clustering, with k = 2, on the significant pixels of AD and NC MRI images to separate subjects belonging to the two classes and detect the class centroids. Subsequently, we classified subjects with MCI using only the significant pixels. This approach enables quick classification of subjects with AD and NC, and more importantly, it predicts MCI-to-AD conversion with high accuracy and low computational cost, making it a rapid and effective diagnostic tool for real-time assessments.

The construction of predictive models of atomic nuclei from first principles is a challenging (yet necessary) task towards the systematic generation of theoretical predictions (and associated uncertainties) to support nuclear data evaluation. The consistent description of the rich phenomenology of nuclear systems indeed requires the introduction of reductionist approaches that construct nuclei directly from interacting nucleons by solving the associated quantum many-body problem. In this context, so-called ab initio methods offer a promising route by deriving controlled (and systematically improvable) approximations both to the inter-nucleon interaction and to the solutions of the many-body problem. From a technical point of view, approximately solving the many-body Schrödinger equation in heavy open-shell systems typically requires the construction and contraction of large mode-4 (mode-6) tensors that need to be stored repeatedly. Recently, a new dimensionality reduction method based on randomized singular value decomposition has been introduced to reduce the numerical cost of many-body perturbation theory. This work applies this lightweight formalism to the study of the Germanium isotopic chain, where standard approaches would be too expansive to run. Inclusion of triaxiality is found to improve the overall agreement with experimental data on differential quantities.

One of the main methods used to microscopically describe collective states in atomic nuclei is the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA). However, due to its high computational cost, systematic studies covering the full nuclear chart are rare. In this work we show the first results of our systematic large-scale QRPA calculations. We do this by means of the quasiparticle finite-amplitude method (QFAM), which significantly reduces computation times. We use two kinds of interactions, the covariant DD-PC1 and a novel chiral interaction.

As the urban heat island effect has become a worldwide phenomenon commonly affecting densely built-up areas, public administrations need efficient strategies to mitigate its impact on human well-being and public health. The aim of this study was to define a replicable method to estimate the ecosystem services provided by public street trees as a supporting tool in the decision-making process of urban greenery management. We compared three street arrangements characteristic of a residential district in Pisa, Italy: (1) with large trees, (2) with small trees, and (3) without trees. First, the software i-Tree Eco was used to assess the benefits of public trees located in the case-study area when provided with the three scenarios. Second, the comparison was held on the field, and we collected data with a wet bulb globe temperature meter in order to evaluate the differences in pedestrian thermal comfort among the street arrangements. The results confirmed the importance of urban vegetation, as it has major impacts on carbon sequestration and storage, pollution removal, air humidity and quality, and shade, given bigger trees and canopy sizes. The loss of ecosystem services compared to the presence of large trees varied between 40% and 50% (no trees) and 30% and 40% (small trees).
