Abstract

Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) is an attractive technology for chemical conversion of energy. Replacement of platinum with inexpensive and stable electrocatalysts remains a major bottleneck hampering large-scale hydrogen production by using clean and renewable energy sources. Here, we report electrocatalytically active and ultra-stable Polymer-Derived Ceramics towards HER. We successfully prepared ultrathin silicon and carbon (Si–C) based ceramic systems supported on electrically conducting 2D reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets with promising HER activity by varying the nature and the composition of the ceramic with the inclusion of nitrogen, boron and oxygen. Our results suggest that oxygen-enriched Si-B-C-N/rGO composites (O-SiBCN/rGO) display the strongest catalytic activity leading to an onset potential and a Tafel slope of − 340 mV and ~ 120 mV dec−1 respectively. O-SiBCN/rGO electrodes display stability over 170 h with minimal increase of 14% of the overpotential compared to ~ 1700% for commercial platinum nanoparticles. Our study provides new insights on the performance of ceramics as affordable and robust HER catalysts calling for further exploration of the electrocatalytic activity of such unconventional materials.

Abstract

The development of amorphous phosphate-based materials is of major interest in the field of biomaterials science, and especially for bone substitution applications. In this context, we herein report the synthesis of gel-derived hydrated amorphous calcium/sodium ortho/pyrophosphate materials at ambient temperature and in water. For the first time, such materials have been obtained in a large range of tunable orthophosphate/pyrophosphate molar ratios. Multi-scale characterization was carried out thanks to various techniques, including advanced multinuclear solid state NMR. It allowed the quantification of each ionic/molecular species leading to a general formula for these materials: [(Ca2+y Na+z H+3+x-2y-z)(PO43−)1-x(P2O74−)x](H2O)u. Beyond this formula, the analyses suggest that these amorphous solids are formed by the aggregation of colloids and that surface water and sodium could play a role in the cohesion of the whole material. Although the full comprehension of mechanisms of formation and structure is still to be investigated in detail, the straightforward synthesis of these new amorphous materials opens up many perspectives in the field of materials for bone substitution and regeneration. Statement of significance The metastability of amorphous phosphate-based materials with various chain length often improves their (bio)chemical reactivity. However, the control of the ratio of the different phosphate entities has not been yet described especially for small ions (pyrophosphate/orthophosphate) and using soft chemistry, whereas it opens the way for the tuning of enzyme- and/or pH-driven degradation and biological properties. Our study focuses on elaboration of amorphous gel-derived hydrated calcium/sodium ortho/pyrophosphate solids at 70 °C with a large range of orthophosphate/pyrophosphate ratios. Multi-scale characterization was carried out using various techniques such as advanced multinuclear SSNMR (31P, 23Na, 1H, 43Ca). Analyses suggest that these solids are formed by colloids aggregation and that the location of mobile water and sodium could play a role in the material cohesion.

Abstract

International audience; Bone reactivity offers a potential way to record local physical–chemical conditions prevailing in fossilization environments and archaeological sites. In the present study, a series of fossil bone samples from the karstic environments of the Bolt's Farm cave system (Cradle of Humankind, South Africa) and from fluvio‐lacustrine environments of the Tugen Hills (Gregory Rift, Kenya) is analysed. The chemical composition and infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic properties of fossil samples point to a transformation of the biogenic apatite and formation of secondary apatite. Depending on the sample, the secondary apatite corresponds to a carbonate‐bearing hydroxy‐ or fluor‐apatite. The maximum fraction of secondary apatite is close to 60%, coinciding with previous observations in experimental alteration of bone in aqueous solutions and suggesting that a fraction of pristine biological apatite is likely to be preserved. The present results also suggest that the acetic acid treatment of fossil samples moderately increases their average crystallinity but may dissolve carbonate‐rich domains of secondary apatite.

Abstract

International audience; The inorganic chemistry of the Na–Si system at high pressure is fascinating, with a large number of interesting compounds accessible in the industrial pressure scale, below 10 GPa. In particular, Na4Si4 is stable in this whole pressure range and thus plays an important role in understanding the thermodynamics and kinetics underlying materials synthesis at high pressures and high temperatures. In the present work, the melting curve of the Zintl compound Na4Si4 made of Na+ and Si44– tetrahedral cluster ions is studied at high pressures up to 5 GPa, by using in situ electrical measurements. During melting, the insulating Na4Si4 solid transforms into an ionic conductive liquid that can be probed through the conductance of the whole high-pressure cell, i.e., the system constituted of the sample, the heater, and the high-pressure assembly. Na4Si4 melts congruently in the studied pressure range, and its melting point increases with pressure with a positive slope dTm/dp of 20(4) K/GPa.
