Peri-menopausal discomfort can have a detrimental effect on the physical health of women due to physiological and behavioral changes. Estrogen and progesterone-based hormone therapy can alleviate menopausal symptoms, but estrogen supplementation may have negative health effects. The effectiveness of hormone replacement therapy using natural compounds for peri-menopausal disorders is still uncertain. Evidence from in vivo experiments indicates that Ferula L. extract in ovariectomized rats leads to better sexual behavior. The effect seems to be linked to the phytoestrogenic properties of ferutinin, the primary bioactive compound in the extract. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical impact of Ferula communis L. extract (titrated at 20% ferutinin, and given at doses of 100 mg/die for 90 days) on the quality of life of 64 menopausal women. The clinical trial was randomized, double-blind, and placebo controlled. Our data showed that Ferula communis L. extract reduced by 67 + 9% all symptoms associated to postmenopausal discomfort and enhanced significantly sexual behavior. In addition, the supplement led to a significant improvement of BMI and oxidative stress decrease in the women who received it, while also keeping platelet aggregation within normal levels. Overall, these results could point to the potential use of supplementation with Ferula communis L. extract to revert or mitigate menopause dysfunction.

Male infertility occurs approximately in about 50% of all infertility cases and represents a serious concern worldwide. Traditional semen analysis alone is insufficient to diagnose male infertility. Over the past two decades, advances in omics technologies have led to the widespread application of metabolomics profiling as a valuable diagnostic tool for various diseases and disorders. Seminal plasma represents a rich and easily accessible source of metabolites surrounding spermatozoa, a milieu that provides several indispensable nutrients to sustain sperm motility and fertilization. Changes of metabolic profiles in seminal plasma reflect male reproductive tract disorders. Here, we performed seminal plasma metabolomics and lipidomics profiling to identify a new pattern of biomarkers of male infertility. Seminal plasma samples from unfertile subjects (n = 31) and fertile controls (n = 19) were analyzed using an untargeted metabolomics/lipidomics integrated approach, based on Ultra-High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography–tandem Mass Spectrometry. Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis showed a distinct separation between healthy fertile men and infertile subjects. Among the 15 selected candidate biomarkers based on Variable Importance in Projection scores, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) (18:1; 18:1) resulted with the highest score. In total, 40 molecular species showed statistically significant variations between fertile and infertile men. Heat-map and volcano plot analysis indicated that acylcarnitines, phosphatidylserine (PS) (40:2) and lactate were decreased, while PE (18:1; 18:1), Phosphatidic acid (PA) (O-19:2; 18:1), Lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LPE) (O-16:1) and Phosphatidylcholine (PC) (O-16:2; 18:1)-CH3 were increased in the infertile group. The present study is the first one to analyze the metabolomics/lipidomics dysregulation in seminal plasma between fertile and infertile individuals regardless of sub-infertility condition. Association of several metabolites/lipids dysregulation with male infertility reinforced data of previous studies performed with different approaches. In particular, we confirmed significantly decreased levels of PS and carnitines in infertile patients as well as the positive correlation with sperm motility and morphology. If validated on a larger prospective cohort, the metabolite biomarkers of infertility in seminal plasma we identified in the present study might inform novel strategies for diagnosis and interventions to overcome male infertility.

The SI4CARE project is a transnational project which aims to develop both strategy and action plans to improve health and social care in the Adriatic–Ionian region. Starting from a survey of the status quo, each partner has developed some pilots to support the development and monitoring of the policy actions. In particular, partner number three, the Municipality of Miglierina, designed and developed a pilot related to the use of wearable devices for monitoring elderly patients in rural areas. With the collaboration of the complex unity of primary care (UCCP) of the Reventino area, the pilot is based on the use of smart wearable devices to monitor some parameters of older adults after their vaccinations for flu and covid. This paper focused on the design and implementation of the system. It describes its application in the Municipality of Miglierina. Presentation of the results and a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses will be presented, in detail, in future work. Finally, the possibility of extending the experiment to other Adriatic–Ionian regions is addressed.

As indicated in numerous research studies, schoolchildren encounter many difficulties and obstacles in learning the multifaceted concept of the angle. In order to explore the possibility of enhancing schoolchildren's understanding of such a concept, the authors present a study that aims at investigating some structural characteristics of Angolandia, a simulation game for learning about angles specifically designed according to theoretical-methodological choices for which references were initially drawn from the literature on simulation games and teaching mathematics. This research, involving 31 children from two, 4th-year primary school classes who played Angolandia, reports the observations made as the game was played, an analysis of a written interview on the angle with children before and after the educational activity and an interview with their teachers. These initial data are discussed and considered as the point of departure for systematic experimentation and future developments.

This article describes a research study involving 132 students on a Primary Education Sciences degree course at Roma Tre University. A complexity paradigm was employed for the research, which used group activities to design a questionnaire that was subsequently analysed to provide 8 different perspectives. The underlying theoretical perspective involved investigation of the applicability of the transactional analysis concept of Cultural Parent (and the associated concepts of Frame of Reference, Script and Ego States) as a way of understanding how changes are needed in educational processes to reflect how family, school and societal cultures have changed, with particular reference to Generation App and the increasing impact of technology on virtual spaces, and the need to reflect cultural diversity.

We provide an updated overview of the known mineral deposits from the Sila and Serre Massifs in Calabria, contributing to setting their genesis within a complex geologic history, starting from the late-Carboniferous. We summarize the mineralization reported in the literature, with a critical review of the host tectonic units, by taking into account the upgrades in the knowledge of these areas. We also set them in updated geological maps and in stratigraphic columns, highlighting the crustal levels to which they pertain. Despite the geologic and minerogenetic similarities potentially existing with late- to post-Variscan mineral deposits from other regions (e.g., Sardinia and French Central Massif), the scientific literature on the Calabria mineralization is out-of-date and not exhaustive. Moreover, these ore deposits were likely considered not economically attractive enough to stimulate new scientific studies. However, in our opinion, such studies are needed to resolve the main open questions, which rely on deciphering the origin and age of mineralization. Finally, research for critical elements hosted by the Sila and Serre mineralization (e.g., In, Ge and Ga in sphalerites) is a possible interesting new perspective.

Seminal plasma (SP) mirrors the local pathophysiology of the male reproductive system and represents a non-invasive fluid for the study of infertility. Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) provides a high-throughput platform to rapidly extrapolate the diagnostic profiles of information-rich patterns. In this study, dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE) combined with MALDI-TOF-MS was applied for the first time to the human SP, with the aim of revealing a diagnostic signature for male infertility. Commercially available octadecyl (C18)-, octyl (C8)-bonded silica sorbents and hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) were tested and the robustness of MALDI-TOF peptide profiling was evaluated. Best performances were obtained for C18-bonded silica with the highest detection of peaks and the lowest variation of spectral features. To assess the diagnostic potential of the method, C18-bonded silica d-SPE and MALDI-TOF-MS were used to generate enriched endogenous peptide profiles of SP from 15 fertile and 15 non-fertile donors. Principal component analysis (PCA) successfully separated fertile from non-fertile men into two different clusters. An array of seven semenogelin-derived peptides was found to distinguish the two groups, with high statistical significance. These findings, while providing a rapid and convenient route to selectively enrich native components of SP peptidome, strongly reinforce the prominent role of semenogelins in male infertility.

A brief presentation of the OECD (2018) 21st Century Skills framework indicates that there are many possibilities for those involved in training, education, teaching and learning. A three-party contract model is reinterpreted in the light of the current complexities of social, economic, cultural and technological changes, and the way in which these are highlighting attention to borders and ethical aspects, allows us to hypothesise new synergies between various fields of TA application of psychotherapy, counselling, educational and organisational. Although this contribution focuses on research within the educational context, it demonstrates the possible implications for personal learning relationships within the complexity of our time.

Chronic Venous Disease (CVD) is a common medical condition affecting up to 80% of the general population. Clinical manifestations can range from mild to more severe signs and symptoms that contribute to the impairment of the quality of life (QoL) of affected patients. Among treatment options, venoactive drugs such as diosmin are widely used in the symptomatic treatment in all clinical stages. The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a new formulated diosmin in relieving symptoms and improving QoL in patients suffering from CVD. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter clinical study, CVD patients with a Clinical-Etiology-Anatomy-Pathophysiology (CEAP) classification system between C2 and C4 were randomized to receive a bioavailable diosmin (as μsmin® Plus) 450 mg tablet once daily or a placebo for 8 weeks. Clinical symptoms and QoL were monitored using the measurement of leg circumference, visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain, Global Index Score (GIS) and Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS). A total of 72 subjects completed the study. From week 4, leg edema was significantly decreased in the active group (p < 0.001). An improvement in the VAS score was observed in the active group compared to placebo at the end of treatment (p < 0.05). GIS and VCSS scores were significantly improved in the active group at week 8 (p < 0.001). No treatment related-side effects were recorded. The results of this study showed that the administration of low-dose μsmin® Plus was safe and effective in relieving symptoms and improving QoL in subjects with CVD.

Protein–protein interactions (PPIs) are the vital engine of cellular machinery. After virus entry in host cells the global organization of the viral life cycle is strongly regulated by the formation of virus-host protein interactions. With the advent of high-throughput -omics platforms, the mirage to obtain a “high resolution” view of virus–host interactions has come true. In fact, the rapidly expanding approaches of mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics in the study of PPIs provide efficient tools to identify a significant number of potential drug targets. Generation of PPIs maps by affinity purification-MS and by the more recent proximity labeling-MS may help to uncover cellular processes hijacked and/or altered by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), providing promising therapeutic targets. The possibility to further validate putative key targets from high-confidence interactions between viral bait and host protein through follow-up MS-based multi-omics experiments offers an unprecedented opportunity in the drug discovery pipeline. In particular, drug repurposing, making use of already existing approved drugs directly targeting these identified and validated host interactors, might shorten the time and reduce the costs in comparison to the traditional drug discovery process. This route might be promising for finding effective antiviral therapeutic options providing a turning point in the fight against the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) outbreak.

Background: Antimicrobial peptides (AMP) play a pivotal role in innate host defense and in immune response. The delineation of new MS-based profiling tools, which are able to produce panels of AMP of the nasal fluid (NF), may be attractive for the discovery of new potential diagnostic markers of respiratory disorders. Methods: Swabs collected NF from healthy patients and from patients with respiratory disorders. We used a fast procedure based on mesoporous silica particles (MPS) to enrich NF in its AMP component in combination with MALDI-TOF/TOF MS as a key tool for rapidly analyzing clinical samples. Results: Reproducible MS peptide fingerprints were generated for each subject and several AMP were detected including (Human Neutrophil Peptides) HNPs, Statherin, Thymosin-β4, Peptide P-D, II-2, β-MSP, SLPI, Lysozyme-C, and their proteo-forms. In particular, Statherin, Thymosin-β4, and Peptide P-D were accurately identified by direct MS/MS sequencing. Examples of applicability of this tool are shown. AMP fingerprints were obtained before and after a nasal polypectomy as well as before and post-treatment with azelastine/fluticasone in one case of allergic rhinitis. Conclusion: The potential of our platform to be implemented by new mesoporous materials for capturing a wider picture of AMP might offer an amazing opportunity for diagnostic clinical studies on individual and population scales.

Life-long learning is an increasingly relevant need of our time. Educational perspectives currently tend to focus - beside the single subjects (Foreign Languages, Maths, History) - on how, while learning, you can learn to learn. Considering this perspective, we have been integrating Transactional Analysis in the training for future Primary School Teachers. Our objectives are both more traditional applications intended to improve the relationship between teachers and teachers, teachers and families, and to observe, study and intervene in the relationship which children create with their learning process. The writing on emotional drivers, which we presented on IJTAR – International Journal of TA Research - for didactics of Mathematics, has proved very helpful for other subjects and in learning how to learn. Our experimentation involved 10 classes of a primary school, and enabled us to create several tools (interviews to identify drivers, egogram interview, check lists for the observation of transactions during the lessons). The learning outcomes have been analysed by the teachers according to some against indicators of learning and didactic objectives established within a systematic frame of reference. This model for didactics in TA clearly contributes to the construction of a learning environment, enhancing both the expression of the Free Child and Self-efficacy.

We study the effects of cation inversion x (Mg ↔ Al, with x representing the fraction of Mg and Al exchanged) and magnetic substitution (Mn → Mg) on the elastic properties of the MgAl 2 O 4 spinel system using density functional theory and Brillouin scattering techniques. Our computations show that cation inversion decreases the molar volume of spinel and produces a stiffening of C 11 and a softening of C 12. Simulations and experiments agree within 2 %. Density functional theory also captures the qualitative effect of Mg ↔ Al on C 44 , that is, an initial softening for inversion degree at x < 0.125 and stiffening at x = 1 , with a disagreement of < 4%. The Zener anisotropy factor A decreases with increasing degree of inversion. All these trends are preserved at high pressures. The substitution of Mn for Mg produces and increases the molar volume of spinel, and it is accompanied by the softening of both C 11 and C 44 , and the stiffening of C 12 in good agreement with experimental results at ambient conditions. All these effects, which are qualitatively opposite to those of cation inversion, are enhanced at high pressures. The effect of Mn → Mg on the elastic anisotropy of spinel is, however, qualitatively similar to that of cation inversion, i.e., it causes a decrease in the Zener factor A. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study concerns the effects of a weak static magnetic field (MF) at 10 μT oriented downward, combined with a 16-Hz sinusoidal MF (10 μT), on in vitro pollen germination of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa). Extremely low frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF) exposure was carried out by a signal generator unit connected to a copper wire solenoid, inside which samples where placed. Two different kinds of treatment were performed: direct and indirect. In the direct treatment, pollen samples were directly exposed during rehydration, germination, or both. In the indirect treatment, the pollen growth medium was prepared with water aliquots (at standard temperature of 20°C and pH = 6.74) that were exposed before use for 8 or 24 h. The main purpose of our research was to identify a biological marker (in vitro pollen germination in a stressing growth medium without Ca2+) susceptible to the effects of direct or indirect ELF-MF exposure. The working variable was the pollen germination rate, as detected blind after 3 h 30 min by an Axioplan microscope. A directionally consistent recovery of germination percentage was observed both for direct exposure (during germination and both rehydration and germination phases) and water-mediated exposure (with water exposed for 24 h and immediately used). Our results suggest that the ELF-MF treatment might partially remove the inhibitory effect caused by the lack of Ca2+ in the culture medium, inducing a release of internal Ca2+ stored in the secretory vesicles of pollen plasma membrane. Although preliminary, findings seem to indicate the in vitro pollen performance as adequate to study the effects of ELF-MFs on living matter.

Fourth-year student teachers on a degree course at Roma Tre University were supervised as they conducted empirical research to introduce transactional analysis to primary schoolchildren, with the aim of developing their own self-efficacy and autonomy whilst demonstrating that the teaching of drivers (Kahler 1975) to children led to progressive development for those children of the metacognitive capabilities and self-awareness needed to make their own decisions about behavioural choices. The limitations of small sample groups are acknowledged as is the fact that the supervision came from authors whose previous work had provided the basis for the questionnaires designed and used by the students.

The microstructural features of a biotite (Mg-rich annite) crystal from dacite rocks of Dzep, Serbia, were studied by X-ray diffraction topography (XRDT) and high-resolution and analytical transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM and ATEM, respectively). The average chemical composition, obtained by electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) data, is [([K.sub.0.87][Na.sub.0.05][Ca.sub.0.01]).sub.[summation]=0.93] [([Fe.sup.2+.sub.1.36][Mg.sub.1.25][Ti.sub.0.22] [Al.sub.0.14][Mn.sub.0.03][Li.sub.0.01].sub.[summation]=3.01] [([Si.sub.2.84][Al.sub.1.16]).sub.[summation]=4.00] [O.sub.10][[[(OH).sub.1.53][O.sub.0.35][F.sub.0.10] [Cl.sub.0.02]].sub.[summation]=2.00] Inhomogeneous regions from either different polytypes or twins were mapped by XRDT, and these images were used to guide sampling for TEM analysis. Three stacking arrangements, each belonging to subfamily-A of mica polytypes, were identified by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns and HRTEM images: (1) dominant semi-random 1[M.sub.1]-n(120[degrees]), including an occasional repetition of long-period inhomogeneous stacking sequences belonging to the 3T structural series; (2) highly faulted 2[M.sub.2], sometimes with short-range-ordered long-period inhomogeneous sequences based on the 2[M.sub.1] structural series; and (3) perfectly ordered 3T stacking repeating over long distances (several micrometers). ATEM data revealed that the microchemical composition of 3T differs from that of the host matrix. The 3T is enriched in interlayer cations (K and Na), and depleted in Si and octahedral cations. The paper reports on the qualitative results of the experimental phase of a study to examine the links between children’s learning experiences associated with two digit division and the transactional analysis concept of drivers. The author presents results obtained from a process that used a questionnaire developed during a prior heuristic phase of research, combined with undergraduate student observations of the children, drawings produced by the children, and teacher observations on permission transactions used. Examples are provided for each of the five drivers.

Linking the deformation history of mylonitized continental rocks to the progress of devolatilization reactions that trigger reaction softening is critical for the understanding of crustal scale processes. We have analysed the field geometries and microstructures of deformed rocks within the southern Hercynian belt in Calabria, as well as modelled the pressure–temperature–deformation (P–T–d) trajectory of a main ductile shear zone that tectonically coupled the deeper crustal Mammola Paragneiss Unit with the upper crustal Stilo–Pazzano Phyllite Unit. P–T modelling of the mylonitic Mammola Paragneiss Unit was performed through calculation of phase equilibrium diagrams with the software thermocalc in the MnNCKFMASHTO model system. The prograde P–T–d trajectory is based on the zoning profiles of garnet porphyroblasts and their mineral inclusions, primarily barroisite and epidote. P–T modelling shows that peak metamorphic conditions of ~0.9 GPa and 585°C were reached during a Dn‐1 under‐thrusting event. The following exhumation during the Dn mylonitic event, and contact metamorphism during Dn+1 and Dn+2 folding events, have also been modelled because they are essential to restore the previous tectono‐metamorphic history. The exhumation trajectory was modelled down to 0.3 GPa with temperatures of 440–460°C, under fluid‐deficient conditions, as well as the final late Carboniferous contact metamorphism up to Tmax of 680–720°C. The prograde path shows clear evidence for thermal buffering during garnet growth at the expense of chlorite, with a heating‐dominated stage after chlorite breakdown. Subsequently, a rheological change associated with epidote breakdown (i.e. reaction softening) occurred, highlighted by a net steepening of the P/T trajectory towards the pressure peak. On the basis of the barroisite inclusions within garnet porphyroblasts as well as the 'hairpin' shape of the reconstructed P–T–d path (before contact metamorphism), we infer that the unusual low T/P gradient for the Hercynian crust exposed in the Mammola Paragneiss Unit records its involvement in the Palaeotethys–Gondwana subduction beneath Laurussia during Dn‐1 under‐thrusting. We present a new palaeotectonic interpretation along the southern Hercynian belt in Calabria during the Upper Mississippian–Lower Pennsylvanian, that is consistent with previous geochronology studies. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and its most severe form, critical limb ischaemia (CLI), are very common clinical conditions related to atherosclerosis and represent the major causes of morbidity, mortality, disability, and reduced quality of life (QoL), especially for the onset of ischaemic chronic leg ulcers (ICLUs) and the subsequent need of amputation in affected patients. Early identification of patients at risk of developing ICLUs may represent the best form of prevention and appropriate management. In this study, we used a Prediction System for Chronic Leg Ulcers (PredyCLU) based on fuzzy logic applied to patients with PAD. The patient population consisted of 80 patients with PAD, of which 40 patients (30 males [75%] and 10 females [25%]; mean age 66.18 years; median age 67.50 years) had ICLUs and represented the case group. Forty patients (100%) (27 males [67.50%] and 13 females [32.50%]; mean age 66.43 years; median age 66.50 years) did not have ICLUs and represented the control group. In patients of the case group, the higher was the risk calculated with the PredyCLU the more severe were the clinical manifestations recorded. In this study, the PredyCLU algorithm was retrospectively applied on a multicentre population of 80 patients with PAD. The PredyCLU algorithm provided a reliable risk score for the risk of ICLUs in patients with PAD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The construction industry is lagging behind other industries in terms of efficiency and performance. Lean-oriented supply chain management (SCM) initiatives have not yet led to significant improvements because of the peculiarities of the industry. In this regard, the construction industry is characterized by poor collaboration, conflicts, disputes, and a lack of customer focus and end-user involvement. These peculiarities make partnering in construction industry projects somewhat difficult. Practitioners, researchers, and societies at large have, therefore, called for a change in attitudes, behaviors, and procedures to increase the chances of a project's success. First, this study performed a systematic literature review followed by eight structured interviews to understand the most important barriers that prevent the collaboration in customer–supplier relationships in construction supply chains. Second, the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) analysis provided a new understanding of the barriers by showing cause–effect associations among them to promote collaboration in the construction industry's SCM. This new understanding can be used to orient more effective actions to improve the customer–supplier relationship in the construction supply chain. The main findings show that three of the four barriers that act as causes are industry-related barriers, and the main finding depends on the specific temporary configuration that characterizes a project-based industry. Among the causes, there is also an organizational barrier that highlights how a clear definition of a project's roles and responsibilities impacts collaboration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. As revealed by national surveys and comparisons with other countries, Italian students may have difficulties in learning mathematical content, and geometry in particular.Aim. This research aimed at ascertaining if, with respect to traditional methods, the structural characteristics of simulation games designed on the basis of specific theoretical and methodological choices can: (a) facilitate comprehension and improve the retention of geometric concepts; (b) increase pupils’ motivation to learn geometry; (c) affect perceived social and scholastic self-efficacy.Method. This mixed method research included an experimental and a control group and a qualitative analysis of an open-ended examination.Results. Our research with Y4 primary pupils (n=104) indicates that students who learned geometrical concepts via the simulation game had a higher level of both content retention and level of abstraction compared with those in the control group.Conclusions. The results of this study highlight the didactic effectiveness of simulation games with reference to the cognitive aspects of the learning process and indicate the need to develop design models for geometry-based simulations. Chronic leg ulcers ( CLUs) are a common occurrence in the western population and are associated with a negative impact on the quality of life of patients. They also cause a substantial burden on the health budget. The pathogenesis of leg ulceration is quite heterogeneous, and chronic venous ulceration ( CVU) is the most common manifestation representing the main complication of chronic venous disease ( CVD). Prevention strategies and early identification of the risk represent the best form of management. Fuzzy logic is a flexible mathematical system that has proved to be a powerful tool for decision-making systems and pattern classification systems in medicine. In this study, we have elaborated a computerised prediction system for chronic leg ulcers ( PredyCLU) based on fuzzy logic, which was retrospectively applied on a multicentre population of 77 patients with CVD. This evaluation system produced reliable risk score patterns and served effectively as a stratification risk tool in patients with CVD who were at the risk of developing CVUs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
