Northwest Africa 090: A Case for Revising Mineralogical and Geochemical Criteria for Classifying Primitive Achondrites 53rd LPSC abstract n° 1897

Carbon is an essential element for the existence and evolution of life on Earth. Its abundance in Earth's crust and mantle (the Bulk Silicate Earth, BSE) is surprisingly high given that carbon is strongly siderophile (metal-loving) at low pressures and temperatures, and hence should have segregated almost completely into Earth's core during accretion. Estimates of the concentration of carbon in the BSE lie in the range 100-260 ppm and are much higher than expected based on simple models of core-mantle differentiation. Here we show through experiments at the putative conditions of Earth's core formation (49-71 GPa and 3600-4000 K) that carbon is significantly less siderophile at these conditions than at the low pressures ($\leq$13 GPa) and temperatures ($\leq$2500 K) of previous large volume press studies, but at least an order of magnitude more siderophile than proposed recently based on an experimental approach that is similar to ours. Using our new data along with previously published results, we derive a new parameterization of the pressure-temperature dependence of the metal-silicate partitioning of carbon. We apply this parameterization in a model that combines planet formation and core-mantle differentiation that is based on astrophysical N-body accretion simulations. Because differentiated planetesimals were almost completely depleted in carbon due to sublimation at high temperatures, almost all carbon in the BSE was added by the accretion of fully-oxidized carbonaceous chondrite material from the outer solar system. Carbon is added to the mantle continuously throughout accretion and its concentration reaches values within the BSE range (e.g. 140$\pm$40 ppm) at the end of accretion. Murrili, the third meteorite recovered by the Desert Fireball Network, is analyzed using mineralogy, oxygen isotopes, bulk chemistry, physical properties, noble gases, and cosmogenic radionuclides. The modal mineralogy, bulk chemistry, magnetic susceptibility, physical properties, and oxygen isotopes of Murrili point to it being an H5 ordinary chondrite. It is heterogeneously shocked (S2–S5), depending on the method used to determine it, although Murrili is not obviously brecciated in texture. Cosmogenic radionuclides yield a cosmic ray exposure age of 6–8 Ma, and a pre‐atmospheric meteoroid size of 15–20 cm in radius. Murrili’s fall and subsequent month‐long embedment into the salt lake Kati Thanda significantly altered the whole rock, evident in its Mössbauer spectra, and visual inspection of cut sections. Murrili may have experienced minor, but subsequent, impacts after its formation 4475.3 ± 2.3 Ma, which left it heterogeneously shocked.

Recent studies geared toward understanding the volatile abundances of the lunar interior have focused on the volatile-bearing accessory mineral apatite. Translating measurements of volatile abundances in lunar apatite into the volatile inventory of the silicate melts from which they crystallized, and ultimately of the mantle source regions of lunar magmas, however, has proved more difficult than initially thought. In this contribution, we report a detailed characterization of mesostasis regions in four Apollo mare basalts (10044, 12064, 15058, and 70035) in order to ascertain the compositions of the melts from which apatite crystallized. The texture, modal mineralogy, and reconstructed bulk composition of these mesostasis regions vary greatly within and between samples. There is no clear relationship between bulk-rock basaltic composition and that of bulk-mesostasis regions, indicating that bulk-rock composition may have little influence on mesostasis compositions. The development of individual melt pockets, combined with the occurrence of silicate liquid immiscibility, exerts greater control on the composition and texture of mesostasis regions. This work is part of a project to build an infrared database in order to link IR data of planetary materials (and therefore possible Mercury material) with remote sensing observations of Mercury, which will probably be obtained by the MERTIS instrument on the forthcoming BepiColombo mission.The unique achondrite Northwest Africa (NWA)\ud 7325, which has previously been suggested to represent the first sample from Mercury, was investigated by optical and electron microscopy, and infrared and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the oxygen, strontium, xenon, and argon isotopes were measured and the abundance of selected trace elements determined. The meteorite is a cumulate rock with subchondritic abundances of HFSE and REE and elevated Sr contents, which underwent a second heating and partial remelting process. Oxygen isotope measurements show that NWA 7325 plots in the ureilite field, close to the ALM-A trachyandesitic fragment found in the unique Almahata Sitta meteorite breccia. On the other hand, mineralogical investigations of the pyroxenes in NWA 7325 provide evidence for similarities to the lodranites and acapulcoites. Furthermore, the rock is weakly shocked and argon isotope data record ancient (~4.5 Ga) plateau ages that have not been reset. The sample records a cosmogenic exposure age of ~19 Ma. Systematics of Rb-Sr indicate an extreme early volatile depletion of the precursor material, similar to many other achondrite groups. However, despite its compositional similarities to other meteorite groups, our results suggest that this meteorite is unique and unrelated to any other known achondrite group. An origin for NWA 7325 as a sample from the planet Mercury is not supported by the results of our investigation. In particular, the evidence from infrared spectroscopy indicates that a direct relationship between NWA 7325 and the planet Mercury can be ruled out: no acceptable spectral match between laboratory analyses and remote sensing observations from Mercury has been obtained. However, we demonstrate that infrared spectroscopy is a rapid and nondestructive method to characterize mineral phases and thus an excellent tool for planetary surface characterization in space missions.

Lunar petrology, most notably the absense of hydrous minerals (such as micas and amphiboles) and the lack of Fe2O3, imply a low oxygen activity for the Moon. The anhydrous nature of the Moon is consistent with observed depletions in volatile elements compared to the Earth. Recent analytical developments have led to the re-investigation of lunar samples. In volcanic products, heterogeneous water contents in volcanic glass beads olivine-hosted melt inclusions and in the accessory phase apatite indicate a wetter lunar interior than previously thought. Analysis of lunar apatite has produced OH contents as high as ~12000 ppm and volatile contents of olivine-hosted melt inclusions appear to be similar to terrestrial mid-ocean ridge basalts values. However, analysis of Cl isotope compositions from a range of lunar rocks (basalts, glasses, apatite grains) identified a Cl fractionation 25 times larger than on Earth. This has been interpreted as reflecting a relatively dry lunar interior. The coupled nature of Cl and H, together with this high fractionation of Cl has been used to suggest the Moon’s mantle has H values as low as 10\ud ppb.\ud \ud To calculate the volatile contents of lunar melts, the partitioning behaviour of volatiles into apatite must be considered. Very little work has been done on the partition of volatiles under lunar conditions, however to fully constrain the H content of the magmatic source regions based on apatite grain measurements, determination of accurate partition coefficients is required.\ud \ud Experimental work using a piston-cylinder assembly at VU, University Amsterdam, is being carried out to derive these partition coefficients for volatiles (F, OH, Cl) between apatite and melts. Measurements of the volatile contents in experimental synthesised apatites are being carried out using a Cameca NanoSIMS 50L ion probe at the Open University. Primary experiments have looked at the temperature effect of F partitioning into apatite. This experimental work will be combined with measurements of Cl, F, and OH concentrations as well as Cl and H isotope compositions in mare basalts. This will provide better constraints on the volatile budget of the lunar magmatic source regions.

International audience; The Jiddat al Harasis (JaH) 422 ureilite was found in the Sultanate of Oman; it is classified as a ureilitic impact melt breccia. The meteorite consists of rounded polycrystalline olivine clasts (35%), pores (8%), and microcrystalline matrix (57%). Clasts and matrix have oxygen isotopic values and chemical compositions (major and trace elements) characteristic of the ureilite group. The matrix contains olivine (Fo83-90), low-Ca pyroxene (En84-92Wo0-5), augite (En71-56Wo20-31), graphite, diamond, Fe-metal, sulfides, chromite, and felsic glass. Pores are partly filled by secondary Fe-oxihydroxide and desert alteration products. Pores are surrounded by strongly reduced silicates. Clasts consist of fine-grained aggregates of polygonal olivine. These clasts have an approximately 250 μm wide reaction rim, in which olivine composition evolves progressively from the core composition (Fo79-81) to the matrix composition (Fo84-87). Veins crossing the clasts comprise pyroxene, Fe-oxihydroxide, C-phases, and chromite. Clasts contain Ca-, Al-, and Cr-rich glass along olivine grain boundaries (

International audience; We report on the major and trace element abundances of 18 diogenites, and O-isotopes for 3 of them. Our analyses extend significantly the diogenite compositional range, both in respect of Mg-rich (e.g., Meteorite Hills [MET] 00425, MgO = 31.5 wt%) and Mg-poor varieties (e.g., Dhofar 700, MgO = 23 wt%). The wide ranges of siderophile and chalcophile element abundances are well explained by the presence of inhomogeneously distributed sulfide or metal grains within the analyzed chips. The behavior of incompatible elements in diogenites is more complex, as exemplified by the diversity of their REE patterns. Apart from a few diogenite samples that contain minute amounts of phosphate, and whose incompatible element abundances are unlike the orthopyroxene ones, the range of incompatible element abundances, and particularly the range of Dy/Yb ratios in diogenites is best explained by the diversity of their parental melts. We estimate that the FeO/MgO ratios of the diogenite parental melts range from about 1.4 to 3.5 and therefore largely overlap the values obtained for non-cumulate eucrites. Our results rule out the often accepted view that all the diogenites formed from parental melts more primitive than eucrites during the crystallization of a magma ocean. Instead, they point to a more complex history, and suggest that diogenites were derived from liquids produced by the remelting of cumulates formed from the magma ocean.
