The form-finding analysis is a crucial step for determining the stable self-equilibrated states for tensegrity structures, in the absence of external loads. This form-finding problem leads to the evaluation of both the self-stress in the elements and the shape of the tensegrity structure. This paper presents a novel method for determining feasible integral self-stress states for tensegrity structures, that is self-equilibrated states consistent with the unilateral behaviour of the elements, struts in compression and cables in tension, and with the symmetry properties of the structure. In particular, once defined the connectivity between the elements and the nodal coordinates, the feasible self-stress states are determined by suitably investigating the Distributed Static Indeterminacy (DSI). The proposed method allows for obtaining feasible integral self-stress solutions by a unique Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of the equilibrium matrix, whereas other approaches in the literature require two SVD. Moreover, the proposed approach allows for effectively determining the Force Denstiy matrix, whose properties are strictly related to the super-stability of the tensegrity structures. Three tensegrity structures were studied in order to assess and discuss the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed innovative method.

The aim of this paper is to present a further development of the Corbelling Theory [1] for assessing the structural safety of “false domes” constructions like Trulli, and more generally for corbelled domes. In particular, it is well-known that a corbelled dome of a Trullo is a layered thick shell and that only the thin inner layer (candela) has a structural role. The proposed procedure extends the capabilities of the approach proposed in [2] to more general load conditions, including the infill. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is discussed through the analysis of a paradigmatic case study of a Trullo located in Alberobello. Since the geometry of the construction plays a fundamental role in the structural behavior, the starting point of the analysis was an accurate 3D-laser scanner survey of the dome. The obtained results give some interesting insights about the role of the infill load on the equilibrium of such kind of corbelled domes.

The quality of being adaptable/deployable of tensegrity structures provides intriguing challenges for researchers and designers. In this work, the shape-change capabilities of a V-Expander tensegrity column are analyzed: a numerical investigation is carried out for the study of the cable-actuation process for a column composed of elementary V-Expander tensegrity cells sharing horizontal cables. The actuation is performed by considering suitable sets of active and passive cables among the whole set of cables of the column. The attention is focused on the following kinds of shape-changes: stretching/shrinking, flexure, shear and torsion. Moreover, a strategy for predicting the nonlinear response of the tensegrity column in the cable-actuation process is proposed. This strategy allows for estimating quickly, among all the possible choices of active and passive cable sets, those leading to maximum displacements or rotations and to the minimum ratio between the normalized work of active cables and the deformation of the column. Further numerical analyses are performed by varying the aspect ratio of the V-Expander cell, to evaluate the effects of changes in the geometrical parameters on the nonlinear actuation process of the column. Tensegrity structures have inspired artists, biologists, engineers, and architects. Many studies have been conducted in recent years, especially related to geometry, form finding, static analysis, and dynamic response. Their use is very encouraging in projects requiring adaptable and/or deployable structures. Indeed, a tensegrity system can provide the minimal mass structure required to sustain a given external load, an intriguing feature for uses as lightweight deployable systems, such as satellites, antennas, or robots. Tensegrity systems are reticulated structures composed of bars in compression maintained in equilibrium by a network of cables in tension. This work focuses on the shape-change capabilities of V-Expander tensegrity columns, a promising type of tensegrity system in this context. Shape change can be obtained by shortening some cables using actuators, while other cables lengthen elastically keeping the system in equilibrium during the process. A fast linear prediction strategy is proposed for evaluating the efficiency of any choice of actuated elements. This strategy allows to prefigure the choices of lengthening and shortening cables which lead to the most efficient shape-change processes of V-Expander columns, here presented for the first time. An experimental investigation on the accuracy of dynamically determined tensile force in tie-rods by applying the interferometric radar technique was performed. Tie-rods were used in historical masonry constructions for absorbing thrusts of arches and vaults, and the radar interferometry may represent a fast and easy non-destructive approach for the tensile force identification in the occasion of structural assessments. Laboratory dynamic tests on a cable under a known tensile force show that, provided that a suitable dynamic identification model is used, tensile force evaluations made stating from interferometric radar measurements were characterized by a very good accuracy (mean error in the tensile force estimation less than 2%), comparable with evaluations made starting from accelerometric measurements. In particular, the dynamic identification model considered is a modified version of a model proposed in the literature. The influence on the accuracy in the determination of the tensile force of some features of the experimental setup, like, e.g., the employ of corner reflectors, is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Our work is focused on a new experimental approach for the comparison between Quasi Static Indentation (QSI) damage and Low-Velocity Impact (LVI) damage in polymer composites starting from the results of ultrasonic goniometric immersion tests. In particular, the comparison is performed through the analysis of the additional anisotropy induced by the damage in unidirectional Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composites due to QSI and LVI damage tests performed with a low level of the employed energy. To this aim, we ultrasonically reconstruct the acoustic curves (velocity curves and slowness curves) before and after the damage. Ultrasonic experiments are performed by using a goniometric ultrasonic immersion device designed and built at our laboratory, aimed at the mechanical characterization of anisotropic materials. We highlight differences and similarities between QSI and LVI damage starting from the analysis of the variations of the acoustic behavior and by using a suitable anisotropic damage model developed in the framework of the Continuum Damage Mechanics theory. The proposed experimental approach can be suitably developed for in situ investigations on low-velocity impact damage in polymer composite components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract We study the equilibrium and the local stability for an incompressible elastic solid under arbitrary dead-load surface tractions on the boundary. We particularize the analysis to homogeneous deformations of a homogeneous, isotropic parallelepiped, finding necessary and sufficient algebraic local stability conditions consistent with the further requirement of the zero moment condition. We specialize the study for a uniform distribution of dead-load surface tractions s > 0 on two pairs of faces and –s on the remaining two faces, and we find that two classes of equilibrium solutions may occur: symmetric and asymmetric solutions, respectively. For the symmetric solutions we also determine local stability inequalities. For the special case of a Gent-Thomas material we show that both equilibrium symmetric and asymmetric solutions may occur if the material parameters satisfy certain inequalities. Then, we completely describe the response of the parallelepiped in a loading process starting from the unloaded state for five ranges of the values of the material parameters. In particular, for one of these ranges we show that symmetric solutions are the unique locally stable homogenous equilibrium deformations until a critical value s cr of the load; at s cr , symmetric solutions lose their uniqueness, and a bifurcation into asymmetric solutions may occur. The acoustoelastic effect – that is the correlation between the acoustic properties and the stress state for a solid body – can be profitably employed for experimental measurements of applied and/or residual stress, for example starting from the results of ultrasonic tests. Usually, the interpretation of the results of acoustoelastic experiments is performed in the theoretical framework of the so-called third-order elasticity. In the recent past, more general theoretical models aimed at overcoming some limitations of the third-order elasticity for acoustoelastic stress measurements have been developed. In particular, here we refer to a model developed within the linearized finite elasticity theory and describing the propagation of small amplitude waves in prestressed elastic materials. In this model, no assumption on the origin of initial stress neither on the initial anisotropy of the material is made, but the only hypothesis is that ultrasonic waves superimposed on the stressed reference configuration behaves elastically; then, this theoretical approach is also applicable for the experimental stress analysis of plastically deformed bodies and of anisotropic materials. Moreover, this model leads to “universal relations” relating ultrasonic velocities to the stress in a prestressed configuration of a body. Ultrasonic acoustoelastic tests on specimens under known stress states allows us for showing that the application of the above mentioned theoretical model, together with the use of a suitable experimental setup developed at our laboratory, may lead to stress measurements with an high level of accuracy. In this paper, we focus our attention on a class of tensegrity cells whose topology is based on the so-called “V-Expander” principle, and which can be easily assembled for constructing complex structures. In particular, we propose five new possible variants of the original “V-Expander” cell, characterized by an increasing complexity. After a topological study, as a starting point for the study of the mechanical properties of those cells as possible unit cells of lattice tensegrity materials, we perform a parametric analysis of the feasible self-stress states – i.e., self-stress states in auto-equilibrium and respecting the symmetry and the unilateral behavior of the elements (cables and struts) – as the geometry of the cell changes. This analysis allows us to discuss the features of the distribution of the self-stress in the elements for each one of the proposed V-Expander tensegrity cell variants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
