The growth of continental crust at convergent plate margins involves both continuous and episodic processes. Ridge-trench collision is one episodic process that can cause significant magmatic and tectonic effects on convergent plate margins. Because the sites of ridge collision (ridge-trench triple junctions) generally migrate along convergent plate boundaries, the effects of ridge collision will be highly diachronous in Andean-type orogenic belts and may not be adequately recognized in the geologic record. The Chile margin triple junction (CMTJ, 46 deg S), where the actively spreading Chile rise is colliding with the sediment-filled Peru-Chile trench, is geometrically and kinematically the simplest modern example of ridge collision. The south Chile margin illustrates the importance of the ridge-collision tectonic setting in crustal evolution at convergent margins. Similarities between ridge-collision features in southern Chile and features of Archean greenstone belts raise the question of the importance of ridge collision in Archean crustal growth. Archean plate tectonic processes were probably different than today; these differences may have affected the nature and importance of ridge collision during Archean crustal growth. In conclusion, it is suggested that smaller plates, greater ridge length, and/or faster spreading all point to the likelihood that ridge collision played a greater role in crustal growth and development of the greenstone-granite terranes during the Archean. However, the effects of modern ridge collision, and the processes involved, are not well enough known to develop specific models for the Archean ridge collison.

Work on the development of an improved 183 GHz subharmonic mixer was concentrated in two areas. First, there was an improved performance from current mixer body designs by testing different diodes and varying the whisker lengths. Second, there is the design of a new body structure. The whisker and diode pinsare in the same piece of the mixer that holds the substrate, reducing any motion of the parts that form the ohmic contacts of the diodes circuit. The broadband, low loss, quasi-optical diplexer, which is designed for use with a single ended mixer, has been developed. It uses a Gaussian beam waveguide as its transmission medium. The difference between the diplexer and other diplexers is the use of a Fabry Perot parallel plate filter. One is a multichannel radiometer system. Another approach is a quasi-optical RF polarization diplexer and another receiver. Some of the receivers developed were flown in aircraft and degraded considerably because of an LO failure. A technique for adding a 118 GHz channel to the existing Atmospheric Moisture Microwave Scanner radiometer system, using the RF diplexing scheme, is presented.

The results of zero-g computer model simulation of the operation of a Sabatier reactor, which relies on the effects of buoyant forces, are presented. The reactor was also operated in an experiment with inlet flow rates of carbon dioxide that correspond to continuous operation of the reactor at three, five, eight, and ten-man loading conditions; the three and five-man conditions are noted to be within the design capabilities of the reactor. The loss of carbon dioxide conversion predicted by the model for zero-g environment is noted to be substantial, ranging from 12 to 18.2 percent for five-man to ten-man loading. The simulated normal-gravity values are within 0.9 percent of the experimental conversions. Finally, the results indicate a much hotter operation of the reactor in zero-g due to the loss of natural convective cooling effect.

A mechanism for the production of a chemical change in the mantle, from primordial silicate compositions above the 650 km discontinuity to differentiated compositions below, is reviewed. Some consequences of this are the stabilization of two layer convection with a temperature contrast between the anhydrous mantle solidus and the geotherm which, at 650 km depth, is lower than any other location in the mantle. With thermal contributions from the concentration of the heat producing elements U, Th and K below the 650 km mantle boundary layer and the higher geotherms in the past, widespread or catastrophic melting may have taken place at this location. An episodic breach of this boundary layer by extensive heat and mass transport may have periodically destroyed any simple two-layer convection geometry in the mantle. Such episodic injections of mass and energy into the upper mantle from below may have been the mechanism responsible for episodes of enhanced surface tectonism and thermal activity which appear to be recorded in apparent polar wandering paths and radiometric ages of continental rocks.

A low noise, broadband, balanced mixer has been developed for use as a 225-GHz receiver. It utilizes a local oscillator (LO), whose frequency is nearly 1/4 the signal frequency, to mix the signal power to a low IF, which is then amplified. This same LO drives a similar mixer that is used to phase lock a 225-GHz transmitter. The use of a subharmonic mixer lowers LO cost, noise, and complexity, increases LO availability and reliability, and is compact and portable. Typical applications for this type of mixer include coherent receivers, passive imaging, multiple receiver systems, and broadband detection systems

A description of all algorithms required for altimeter processing is given. Each description includes title, description, inputs/outputs, general algebraic sequences and data volume. All required input/output data files are described and the computer resources required for the entire altimeter processing system were estimated. The majority of the data processing requirements for any radar altimeter of the Seasat-1 type are scoped. Additions and deletions could be made for the specific altimeter products required by other projects.

Subharmonically pumped mixers were ascended and tested. A computerized version of the automatic noise figure measurement system was developed. Impedance matching techniques suitable for these types of mixers were investigated. Narrow and broadband (one octave) matching networks for the subharmonic mixers were designed. The automatic mixer noise figure test facility was completed. Subharmonic mixers and the systems that use them at 183 and 220 GHz were evaluated and characterized.

Systems for making automatic noise figure measurements of millimeter wave mixers have been developed using both analog and digital techniques. The effect of IF mismatch on the measured noise figures is also determined with these methods (Forsythe, 1982). The measurement systems are versatile enough to be used to measure the noise figure of receivers anywhere from 30 to 300 GHz.

The dynamic topography of the sea surface was measured. The radar altimeter measurements yield average ocean topographic data which are mapped. Seasonal deviations from a 3 year mean topography are presented. The altimeters are also instrumented with sample and hold gates which provide information about the shape and amplitude of the return waveform. Parameters including ocean surface wind speed and the significant wave height are determined. One hundred eighty six wind speed and significant wave height histograms are presented.

The kinetics of the Sabatier methanation reaction, the reduction of carbon dioxide with hydrogen to methane and water, was investigated for 58 percent nickel on kieselguhr catalyst and 20 percent ruthenium on alumina catalyst. Differential rate data from an experimental program were correlated with a power function rate equation both for forward and reverse reactions. The kinetic parameters of activation energy, frequency rate constant and reaction order were determined for the rate equation. The values of these parameters were obtained from an Arrhenius plot of the experimental differential rate data. Also the carbon monoxide side reaction effect was measured and included in the correlation of parameters. The reaction was found to fit the rate equation experimentally within the temperature range 421 K, where the reaction effectively begins, the 800 K where the reaction rate drops and departs from the rate equation form.

A radiometer design suitable for use in NASA's WB-57F aircraft to collect data from severe storm regions was developed. The design recommended was a 94/183 GHz scanning radiometer with 3 IF channels on either side of the 183.3 GHz water vapor line and a single IF channel for a low loss atmospheric window channel at 94 GHz. The development and construction of the 94/183 GHz scanning radiometer known as the Advanced Microwave Moisture Sounder (AMMS) is presented. The radiometer scans the scene below the aircraft over an angle of + or - 45 degrees with the beamwidth of the scene viewed of approximately 2 degrees at 94 GHz and 1 degree at 183 GHz. The AMMS data collection system consists of a microcomputer used to store the radiometer data on the flight cartridge recorder, operate the stepper motor driven scanner, and collect housekeeping data such as thermistor temperature readings and aircraft time code.

The Seasat altimeter is designed to measure three parameters important to oceanography: height of the spacecraft above the ocean surface, significant wave height, and ocean backscatter coefficient from which surface winds may be inferred. Since the measurement process is indirect, and the measurement environment is complicated by many factors affecting the instrument readings, corrections to the raw data are needed before they are used to compute geophysical parameters. These corrections are accomplished by the Seasat altimeter sensor file algorithms. The purpose of this paper is to describe these algorithms, why they are needed, how they are implemented, and the evaluation using in-flight data.

The following technical developments are described: (1) a reliable 183 GHz subharmonic mixer, (2) a precision noise figure test setup, (3) the successful deposition of SiO2 on a noncontacting backshort, and (4) sturdier whisker points used for diode contacting.

A multichannel 94/183 GHz radiometer was designed, built, and installed on the NASA Convair 990 research aircraft to take data for hurricane penetration flights, SEASAT-A underflights for measuring rain and water vapor, and Nimbus-G underflights for new sea ice signatures and sea surface temperature data (94 GHz only). The radiometer utilized IF frequencies of 1, 5, and 8.75 GHz about the peak of the atmospheric water vapor absorption line, centered at 183.3 GHz, to gather data needed to determine the shape of the water molecule line. Another portion of the radiometer operated at 94 GHz and obtained data on the sea brightness temperature, sea ice signatures, and on areas of rain near the ocean surface. The radiometer used a multiple lens antenna/temperature calibration technique using 3 lenses and corrugated feed horns at 94 GHz and 183 GHz. Alignment of the feed beams at 94 GHz and 183 GHz was accomplished using a 45 deg oriented reflecting surface which permitted simultaneous viewing of the feeds on alternate cycles of the chopping intervals.

It is shown that a dispersion model for the transport of a gas through a porous medium can be useful in the preliminary design of adsorber beds for the control of trace contaminants. The transmission function is considered, taking into account the transmission of 102-ppm acetaldehyde in helium flowing at various flow rates through an absorber bed. The experiments were conducted at a temperature of 25.0 C. Attention is given to a representation of the experimental breakthrough curve, the volume adsorption capacity, temperature studies, and correlations.
