- Abstract
Efficient self-consistent field (SCF) schemes including both scalar relativistic effects and spin–orbit (SO) interactions at Hartree–Fock (HF) and density functional (DFT) levels are presented. SO interactions require the extension of standard procedures to two-component formalisms. Efficiency is achieved by using effective core potentials (ECPs) and by employing the resolution-of-the-identity approximation for the Coulomb part (RI-J) in pure DFT calculations as well as also for the HF-exchange part (RI-JK) in the case of HF or hybrid-DFT treatments. The procedures were implemented in the program system TURBOMOLE; efficiency is demonstrated for comparably large systems, such as Pb54. Relevance of SO effects for electronic structure and stability is illustrated by treatments of small Pb and Po clusters with and without accounting for SO effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; The homogeneous freezing of supercooled H2SO4/H2O solution droplets was investigated in the aerosol chamber AIDA (Aerosol Interactions and Dynamics in the Atmosphere) of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. 24 freezing experiments were performed at temperatures between 189 and 235 K with aerosol particles in the diameter range 0.05 to 1 µm. Individual experiments started at homogeneous temperatures and ice saturation ratios between 0.9 and 0.95. Cloud cooling rates up to -2.8 K min-1 were simulated dynamically in the chamber by expansion cooling using a mechanical pump. Depending on the cooling rate and starting temperature, freezing threshold relative humidities were exceeded after expansion time periods between about 1 and 10 min. The onset of ice formation was measured with three independent methods showing good agreement among each other. Ice saturation ratios measured at the onset of ice formation increased from about 1.4 at 231 K to about 1.75 at 189 K. The experimental data set including thermodynamic parameters as well as physical and chemical aerosol analysis provides a good basis for microphysical model applications.

Higher critical current densities, j c , (up to 1.6–0.15 MA/cm 2 at 10–35 K) at low magnetic fields can be attained in MgB 2 -based materials, if a high manufacturing temperature (1050 °C) is used, while low temperatures (600–800 °C) usually lead to higher critical currents in high magnetic fields (10–4 kA/cm 2 in 6–10 T at 10 K). This tendency was observed for MgB 2 -based materials having 55–99% density and 17–98% connectivity, which were prepared by different methods from different precursors in a wide range of pressure (0.1 MPa–2 GPa). The variation of the manufacturing temperature led to a redistribution of the magnesium, boron, and impurity oxygen. At 2 GPa, its increase results in the segregation of the oxygen in MgB 2 and the transformation of 15–20 nm thick layers of MgB 0.6–0.8 O 0.8–0.9 into separate MgB 0.9–3.5 O 1.6–2 grains and to a reduction of the size of MgB 11–13 O 0.2–0.3 inclusions located in the MgB 2 (MgB 2.2–1.7 O 0.4–0.6 ) matrix. The size reduction of B-enriched inclusions and the localization of O in MgB 2 seem to be the reason for the increase of j c in low fields and for the shift from grain boundary to point pinning of vortices witnessed by an increase of the k -ratio.

International audience; The experimental demonstration and characterization is made of the plasmon-mediated resonant transmission through an embedded undulated continuous thin metal film under normal incidence. 1D undulations are shown to enable a spatially resolved polarisation filtering whereas 2D undulations lead to spatially resolved, polarization independent transmission. Whereas the needed submicron microstructure lends itself in principle to CD-like low-cost mass replication by means of injection moulding and embossing, the present paper demonstrates the expected transmission effects on experimental models based on metal-coated photoresist gratings. The spectral and angular dependence in the neighbourhood of resonance are investigated and the question of the excess losses exhibited by surface plasmons is discussed

International audience; A small amplitude sinusoidal undulation of a continuous thin metal film embedded in a homogeneous medium gives rise to an effect of resonant transmission through the excitation of the plasmon modes propagating along the film. This simple topographic feature can be used to encode high density information at the surface of an easily replicable element.

Using selection rules imposed by the Pauli principle, we classify pairing correlations according to their symmetry properties with respect to spin, momentum, and energy. We observe that inhomogeneity always leads to mixing of even- and odd-energy pairing components. We investigate the superconducting pairing correlations present near interfaces between superconductors and ferromagnets, with focus on clean systems consisting of singlet superconductors and either weak or half-metallic ferromagnets. Spin-active scattering in the interface region induces all of the possible symmetry components. In particular, the long-range equal-spin pairing correlations have odd-frequency s-wave and even-frequency p-wave components of comparable magnitudes. We also analyze the Josephson current through a half-metal. We find analytic expressions and an interesting universality in the temperature dependence of the critical current in the tunneling limit., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, added citations, corrected typos

International audience; This paper presents our interpretation and understanding of the different backgrounds in the EDELWEISS-I data sets. We analyze in detail the several populations observed, which include gammas, alphas, neutrons, thermal sensor events and surface events, and try to combine all data sets to provide a coherent picture of the nature and localisation of the background sources. In light of this interpretation, we draw conclusions regarding the background suppression scheme for the EDELWEISS-II phase.

International audience; Total column amounts of CO, CH4, CO2 and N2O retrieved from SCIAMACHY nadir observations in its near-infrared channels have been compared to data from a ground-based quasi-global network of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers. The SCIAMACHY data considered here have been produced by three different retrieval algorithms, WFM-DOAS (version 0.5 for CO and CH4 and version 0.4 for CO2 and N2O), IMAP-DOAS (version 1.1 and 0.9 (for CO)) and IMLM (version 6.3) and cover the January to December 2003 time period. Comparisons have been made for individual data, as well as for monthly averages. To maximize the number of reliable coincidences that satisfy the temporal and spatial collocation criteria, the SCIAMACHY data have been compared with a temporal 3rd order polynomial interpolation of the ground-based data. Particular attention has been given to the question whether SCIAMACHY observes correctly the seasonal and latitudinal variability of the target species. The present results indicate that the individual SCIAMACHY data obtained with the actual versions of the algorithms have been significantly improved, but that the quality requirements, for estimating emissions on regional scales, are not yet met. Nevertheless, possible directions for further algorithm upgrades have been identified which should result in more reliable data products in a near future.

International audience; A European consortium has progressed towards AC coil, transformer and cable applications made of low AC loss Bi-2223 conductors. Internally assembled ring-bundle-barrier conductors were used in AC coils and an externally assembled conductor was realized for transformer and reactor windings. For the design and optimization of HTS AC coils, a numerical tool for the prediction of AC losses in coils and coil sets had been developed. The demonstrations with air-core coils and iron-core reactors showed that the numerical tool can already be confidently used in the design and optimization of HTS AC coils at nominal operation conditions. A series of three power cable prototypes was manufactured to estimate the influence of optimized low AC loss tapes on the total losses of a cable. In order to estimate the impact of the twist pitch on the losses we also manufactured cables with short and long twist pitches. The advantages and drawbacks of low AC loss tapes in power applications are discussed on the grounds of the test results.

International audience; We define a graded multiplication on the vector space of essential paths on a graph $G$ (a tree) and show that it is associative. In most interesting applications, this tree is an ADE Dynkin diagram. The vector space of length preserving endomorphisms of essential paths has a grading obtained from the length of paths and possesses several interesting bialgebra structures. One of these, the Double Triangle Algebra (DTA) of A. Ocneanu, is a particular kind of quantum groupoid (a weak Hopf algebra) and was studied elsewhere; its coproduct gives a filtrated convolution product on the dual vector space. Another bialgebra structure is obtained by replacing this filtered convolution product by a graded associative product. It can be obtained from the former by projection on a subspace of maximal grade, but it is interesting to define it directly, without using the DTA. What is obtained is a weak bialgebra, not a weak Hopf algebra.

BackgroundIn the context of an aging population, identifying risk factors for Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), specific to older people, is important. However, if age is a known risk factor for VRE infection, a limited number of studies have focused on older patients. This study aimed to identify potential risk factors for VRE acquisition in a population aged 65 years and older, during a large VRE outbreak that occurred in a teaching hospital in Lyon, France, from December 2013 to July 2014.MethodsThe present retrospective, multi-center, descriptive, and analytical study used part of a previous cohort, and included only a sub-group of patients aged 65 years and older. The analysis of the factors included in the original study was completed with factors more specific to geriatric patients. Inclusion criteria were patients aged 65 years and older, in contact with a VRE index patient. Patients were screened by rectal swabs. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed.ResultsA total of 180 VRE contacts were included and 18 patients became carriers. Multivariate analysis showed that risk factors for VRE acquisition in older people included major contact type (RR: 5.31, 95%CI [1.33; 21.19]), number of antibiotics used (RR: 1.36, 95%CI [1.04; 1.76]), a score of McCabe = 2 (RR: 116.39, 95%CI [5.52; 2455.98]), ethylism (RR: 5.50, 95%CI [1.49; 20.25]), and dementia (RR: 7.50, 95%CI [1.89; 29.80]).ConclusionsThis study was able to demonstrate risk factors for VRE acquisition in older people. These risk factors should be taken into account when in the presence of older people in a VRE infected unit.

The European project ECCOFLOW aims at a versatile resistive-type superconducting fault current limiter. For the first time, such a device will be tested at two different sites. The project partners have developed a superconducting fault current limiter design based on REBCO tapes with respect to the specifications provided by two hosting utilities. The limiter will operate at 1 kA at a rated voltage of 24 kV, and will be tested in both a busbar and a transformer feeder application. The design started with extensive investigations on the superconductor tape properties, especially with respect to the limitation behavior in all possible scenarios, and subsequent wide-range modeling of its in-grid behavior. The general integrated layout provides a limitation time of up to 1 s. The limiter is cooled using Gifford-McMahon cryocoolers to recondense the evaporated nitrogen. The present status of production and testing will be presented as well.
