1. Efficient end-to-end simulation of time-dependent coherent X-ray scattering experiments

Abstract

Physical optics simulations for beamlines and experiments allow users to test experiment feasibility and optimize beamline settings ahead of beam time in order to optimize valuable beam time at synchrotron light sources like NSLS-II. Further, such simulations also help to develop and test experimental data processing methods and software in advance. The Synchrotron Radiation Workshop (SRW) software package supports such complex simulations. We demonstrate how recent developments in SRW significantly improve the efficiency of physical optics simulations, such as end-to-end simulations of time-dependent X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy experiments with partially coherent undulator radiation (UR). The molecular dynamics simulation code LAMMPS was chosen to model the sample: a solution of silica nanoparticles in water at room temperature. Real-space distributions of nanoparticles produced by LAMMPS were imported into SRW and used to simulate scattering patterns of partially coherent hard X-ray UR from such a sample at the detector. The partially coherent UR illuminating the sample can be represented by a set of orthogonal coherent modes obtained by simulation of emission and propagation of this radiation through the coherent hard X-ray (CHX) scattering beamline followed by a coherent-mode decomposition. GPU acceleration is added for several key functions of SRW used in propagation from sample to detector, further improving the speed of the calculations. The accuracy of this simulation is benchmarked by comparison with experimental data.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Bruxism is a parafunctional activity that can have several causes. Patients with bruxism need an interdisciplinary approach to treatment planning and individual-ized treatment options. The present study evaluates dentists' knowledge of the bruxism condi-tion and their need for further education. Diagnosis and treatment methods used by practicians from different specialties are emphasized. Materials and Methods: A prospective cross-sectional, observational, and analytical cohort study was conducted. It employed a questionnaire based on information on etiology, diagnosis, and treatment methods and included data from 80 dental practitioners from Cluj County. Results: Most dentists (81.3%) recognized awake and sleep bruxism as separate entities. Most participants identified psychological status as the primary etiological factor (80%), followed by occlusal interferences (13.8%) and other factors (genetics). Anamnesis and clinical examination were performed for bruxism diagnosis (90%). Occlusal balance (%) and occlusal splints (%) were the most encountered treatment methods. Only 27.5% of the practitioners referred patients to other specialists. Physiotherapy and psychotherapy were the primary interdisciplinary ap-proaches. Cognitive behavioral therapy was employed by 43.8%, whereas pharmaceutical ther-apy by 20% of the practitioners. Conclusions. There is a need for standardized training among dentists due to a lack of infor-mation on this topic. When combined with an interdisciplinary approach, complementary diag-nostic methods such as polysomnography and BruxApp can yield accurate diagnosis.

Abstract

Higher-order statistical analysis of X-ray scattering from dilute solutions of polydisperse goethite nanorods was performed and revealed structural information which is inaccessible by conventional small-angle scattering. For instance, a pronounced temperature dependence of the correlated scattering from suspension was observed. The higher-order scattering terms deviate from those expected for a perfectly isotropic distribution of particle orientations, demonstrating that the method can reveal faint orientational order in apparently disordered systems. The observation of correlated scattering from polydisperse particle solutions is also encouraging for future free-electron laser experiments aimed at extracting high-resolution structural information from systems with low particle heterogeneity.

Abstract

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) often includes an unwanted background, which increases the required measurement time to resolve the sample structure. This is undesirable in all experiments, and may make measurement of dynamic or radiation-sensitive samples impossible. Here, we demonstrate a new technique, applicable when the scattering signal is background-dominated, which reduces the requisite exposure time. Our method consists of exploiting coherent interference between a sample with a designed strongly scattering `amplifier'. A modified angular correlation function is used to extract the symmetry of the interference term; that is, the scattering arising from the interference between the amplifier and the sample. This enables reconstruction of the sample's symmetry, despite the sample scattering itself being well below the intensity of background scattering. Thus, coherent amplification is used to generate a strong scattering term (well above background), from which sample scattering is inferred. We validate this method using lithographically defined test samples.

Abstract

After observing and investigating the double-exotic (a double-exotic atom is a bound system, in which both oppositely charged components are unstable particles like μ,π,K,…) π+π− atom with the ground state lifetime τ of about 3×10−15 s, the upgraded DIRAC experiment at the CERN PS accelerator observes for the first time long-lived states of the same atom with lifetimes of about 10−11 s and more. The number of characteristic pion pairs resulting from the breakup (ionisation) of long-lived π+π− atoms amounts to 436±61, corresponding to a signal-to-error ratio of better than 7 standard deviations. This observation opens a new possibility to measure energy differences between p and s atomic states and so to determine ππ scattering lengths.

The "Synchrotron Radiation Workshop" (SRW) code is a computer program developed by the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in 1997. It is used for simulating X-ray beamlines and coherence-exploiting experiments at synchrotron light sources. The code allows for the simulation of partially coherent wavefront propagation and the calculation of intensity distributions and coherence lengths. It has been used for electron beam diagnostics and offers brighter and more coherent X-ray beams for scientific experiments. The code is continuously developed and has interfaces with various software platforms. Abstract

Background and aims. Identifying the optimal method for occlusion analysis by comparing examination sensitivity of the static and dynamic occlusion using three systems: clinical occlusion analysis, semi-adjustable articulator and virtual articulator (3Shape, Denmark) occlusion analysis. Methods. The occlusion analysis of sixteen patients was performed using the three systems. In order to analyze the number of concordant and discordant points and trajectories, the clinical method was compared to the semi-adjustable articulator and to the computerized method. Results. The greatest correspondence was obtained by comparing the clinical and the articulator methods, having a success rate of 85.25%, versus the clinical and the computerized method with a success rate of 73.25%. The propulsion registered the highest discrepancies: 35% in case of the semi-adjustable articulator comparison and 62% in case of the virtual articulator comparison. Conclusions. The semi-adjustable articulator was superior in static and dynamic occlusion analysis compared to the virtual articulator. The analysis of the dynamic occlusion is the most problematic due to its dependency on the individual anatomy of the glenoid fossa which cannot be exactly reproduced by any articulator.

Abstract

Tackling today's challenges in, e.g., clean energy and climate, manufacturing, sustainability, and bio-preparedness requires novel complex materials with unprecedented control over structure and properties. Applications of XPCS include polymer dynamics in bulk and thin films, colloidal suspensions and gels, domain dynamics in condensed matter systems, surface dynamics during thin film growth or ion bombardment. Figure 1 shows structural dynamics measured by XPCS during fused filament fabrication (FFF) of the thermoplastic polyether ether ketone (PEEK) at the CHX beamline. With state-of-the-art hard X-ray coherent flux and detection systems for fast dynamics, CHX enables researchers to investigate nanoscale and mesoscale dynamics of complex materials on timescales ranging from sub-milliseconds to minutes or hours. Abstract

A ferroelectric BaTiO3 thin film grown on a NdScO3 substrate was studied using x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) to characterize thermal fluctuations near the a/b to a/c domain structure transformation present in this low-strain material, which is absent in the bulk. XPCS studies provide a direct comparison of the role of domain fluctuations in first- and second-order phase transformations. The a/b to a/c domain transformation is accompanied by a decrease in fluctuation timescales, and an increase in intensity and correlation length. Surprisingly, domain fluctuations are observed up to 25 degrees C above the transformation, concomitant with the growth of a/c domains and coexistence of both domain types. After a small window of stability, as the Curie temperature is approached, a/c domain fluctuations are observed, albeit slower, potentially due to the structural transformation associated with the ferroelectric to paraelectric transformation. The observed time evolution and reconfiguration of domain patterns highlight the role played by phase coexistence and elastic boundary conditions in altering fluctuation timescales in ferroelectric thin films.

Abstract

Normal incidence 1 keV Ar$^+$ ion bombardment leads to amorphization and ultrasmoothing of Ge at room temperature, but at elevated temperatures the Ge surface remains crystalline and is unstable to the formation of self-organized nanoscale patterns of ordered pyramid-shaped pits. The physical phenomenon distinguishing the high temperature patterning from room temperature ultrasmoothing is believed to be a surface instability due to the Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier for diffusing vacancies and adatoms, which is not present on the amorphous material. This real-time GISAXS study compares smoothing of a pre-patterned Ge sample at room temperature with patterning of an initially flat Ge sample at an elevated temperature. In both experiments, when the nanoscale structures are relatively small in height, the average kinetics can be explained by a linear theory. The linear theory coefficients, indicating surface stability or instability, were extracted for both experiments. Abstract

Objective: To determine whether PostureScreen® Mobile app is a useful, simple tool that is accessible for dentists to evaluate the correlation between malocclusion and posture.Methods: Twenty-nine subjects underwent static and dynamic dental occlusion examinations and a postural exam with PostureScreen® Mobile app, a photographic method. The subjects were divided into groups depending on their static and dynamic occlusion features. The postural parameters were then compared between these groups.Results: Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) for some postural parameters were obtained for Angle Class 1 vs. 2 and 3 and for the passive interference group and active premature contacts group during left lateral movement. There were no statistically significant differences regarding protrusion and right lateral movement.Discussion: Dental occlusion anomalies and posture pathological modifications can be inter-related. Abstract

The adapted DIRAC experiment at the CERN PS accelerator observed for the first time long-lived hydrogen-like $\pi^+\pi^-$ atoms, produced by protons hitting a beryllium target. A part of these atoms crossed the gap of 96~mm and got broken up in the 2.1~\textmu{}m thick platinum foil. Analysing the observed number of atomic pairs, $n_A^L= \left.436^{+157}_{-61}\right|_\mathrm{tot}$, the lifetime of the 2$p$ state is found to be ${\tau_{2p}=(\left.0.45^{+1.08}_{-0.30}\right|_\mathrm{tot}) \cdot10^{-11}}$s, not contradicting the corresponding QED $2p$ state lifetime ${\tau_{2p}^\mathrm{QED}=1.17 \cdot 10^{-11}}$s. This lifetime value is three orders of magnitude larger than our previously measured value of the $\pi^+\pi^-$ atom ground state lifetime $\tau=(\left.3.15^{+0.28}_{-0.26}\right|_\mathrm{tot})\cdot 10^{-15}$s. Further studies of long-lived $\pi^+\pi^-$ atoms will allow to measure energy differences between $p$ and $s$ atomic states and so to determine $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths with the aim to check QCD predictions., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

In-vacuum undulators (IVU) are currently very extensively used at different light source facilities, and in particular in medium-energy storage rings, for the production of high-brightness and high-flux hard X-rays. The relatively small (~5 mm or less) vertical magnetic gaps used in these planar undulators make them, however, rather sensitive to the accuracy of alignment of magnet arrays with respect to electron orbit in the vertical plane. Based on results of commissioning of a number of IVUs at hard X-ray beamlines of NSLS-II, their eventual misalignment with respect to the electron orbit was found to be among frequent reasons of spectral underperformance of the beamlines. We will present results of simulations of different IVU misalignment effects on magnetic fields seen by electron beam and on the emitted undulator radiation spectra. The simulations show e.g. that an impact of angular misalignment of an IVU on the radiation spectrum can be minimized if the IVU elevation is selected to make the electron orbit to pass through the IVU magnetic center. Abstract

Introduction. The aim of the present study was to investigate if signs and symptoms of TMD in young adults with Angle class II/2 malocclusion were present, which were the most important and if they were gender-related. Materials and methods. 28 subjects (17 women and 11 men), all dental students, aged between 20-25 years, with Angle class II/2 malocclusion were included. All subjects were interviewed and clinically assessed. Data regarding the muscles (temporal, masseter, medial and lateral pterygoid, sternocleidomastoid, trapezius), temporomandibular joints and occlusal (static, dynamic) relationships was recorded on the examination chart. Results and discussion. 10 subjects (35.7%) presented muscle pain and 19 (67.8%) reported articular jumps during anamnesis. The most frequent clinical signs were articular jumps in 75% of the subjects. Conclusions. Angle class II/2 malocclusion is associated with signs and symptoms of TMD and is not gender dependent. Abstract

Recent advances in the study of soft materials have led in the last decades to a deeper knowledge of equilibrium and non-equilibrium states and to the discovery of new phases and transitions besides the ones commonly experienced in atomic or molecular systems. Among these glass-glass transitions are quite rare to be found, especially at ambient conditions. Here we report the evidence of a spontaneous glass-glass transition taking place during aging of a colloidal clay through a combination of dilution experiments, X-Ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy, Small Angle X-ray Scattering and Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract

Exploiting the coherence properties in the hard X-ray regime is an important topic for the emerging ultra-lowemittance synchrotron storage rings. The Coherent Hard X-ray (CHX) beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is exploiting the coherent flux to enable best-in-class time-resolved coherent scattering techniques such as X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS) or X-ray Speckle Visibility Spectroscopy (XSVS). Based on the commissioning results, a realistic simulation of the whole beamline, including source and optics, has been performed leveraging a ‘virtual beamline’ module of the ‘Synchrotron Radiation Workshop’ (SRW) code in a web browser based interface to the code named ‘Sirepo’. This virtual beamline capability is used here to simulate partially coherent small angle scattering patterns of samples relevant to the CHX science case, mimicking ‘detector images’ of real experiments. Such source-to-detector simulations of experiments allow for an accurate estimation of feasibility of a given experiment, for an optimization of the beamline setup and interpretation of experimental results. Abstract

The localization length r(loc) associated with a fast secondary relaxation in glassy Laponite is determined by X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) through a Debye-Waller fit of the non-ergodicity parameter. Quantitative differences are observed between the time dependence (aging) of r(loc) in spontaneously aged and rejuvenated samples. This behavior is also reflected in the calculated shear modulus which matches well with data obtained by rheological measurements. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
