- Abstract
The increasingly serious nature of juvenile criminal behavior has led to greater efforts to understand the roots, causes, and correlates of juvenile violence and chronic delinquency, as well as develop more effective means of identifying at-risk youth and treating serious and violent juvenile offenders. This book examines the realities and dynamics of serious and violent youth offending and its implications. The book is divided into four parts. Part I explores serious juvenile crime including its magnitude; youth violence; kids, drugs and crime; school crime and violence; youth gangs and criminality; dating violence; and family violence. Part II examines explanations of juvenile delinquency and criminal behavior, including biological, psychological, and sociological perspectives; and intrafamilial causes and correlates of delinquency. Part III addresses juvenile crime and the justice system, including the police and juvenile offenders, youths and the juvenile and adult courts, and juvenile offenders in custody and confinement. Part IV examines responses to the problem of serious and violent juvenile offending and its precursors, including federal laws and prevention, intervention, and control strategies. - Abstract
Current statistics on arrests, convictions, and prison inmates and recent studies on violence by women indicate that the number of women who commit violent crimes is rising. Violent crimes include murder, rape, terrorism, gang participation, domestic violence, and prostitution. The first section, "Women Who Kill," discusses women who murder their partners in response to physical abuse. In "The Female Rapist," women are shown to be the aggressors in sexual assaults. Another violent crime, rarely associated with women, is terrorism. Recent studies show that female terrorists are displaying extreme viciousness and cruelty. As women struggle to meet their economic needs, their participation in gang activities that include muggings and thefts has increased. The physical abuse of children and partners by women appears to have surpassed the incidence of domestic violence by men. Violence that stems from prostitution involves the prostitutes' need to support their chemical dependency. Studies reveal that the increase in violence is not restricted to adult women, and the number of female juvenile offenders is also increasing. Four reasons are cited to explain violent women: (1) premenstrual syndrome; (2) the women's liberation movement; (3) economic pressures; and (4) substance abuse. Six suggestions are included for curbing violent behavior. (DJC)

- Abstract
Child maltreatment and juvenile delinquency have both been widely studied. While statistics on the number of cases of abuse or delinquency are quite high, they are considered conservative, and estimates of actual as opposed to reported cases are much higher. There are striking parallels between adolescent victimization and adolescent antisocial behavior and many researchers have associated one with the other. Although the victimization of adolescents has not been proven to cause antisocial behavior, the association between the two is both real and significant and cannot be dismissed in the study or prevention efforts of either. In order to better address adolescent victimization and delinquency, it is necessary to direct greater emphasis toward empirical research on delinquency and its relationship to adolescent maltreatment. Juvenile authorities need to be prepared to deal with both maltreatment and delinquency issues. The school needs to play a greater role in the identification and prevention of maltreatment and delinquency. Rather than being treated as criminals, delinquents should be recognized as victims of inadequate societal and family systems. Better counseling and follow-up of maltreated youth are needed to lower their risk of delinquency. Parents need to understand their role in maltreatment and in delinquency. While prevention is a major goal, more funding is needed for both research and program design. (NB)

- Abstract
This timely book explores the complex and persistent problem of street kids in America, children who have run away or been forced to leave home--for reasons that include childhood sexual abuse and neglect, drug abuse, mental health and behavioral problems, sexual promiscuity, and issues related to gender identity. These children often become the victims of sexual exploitation by pimps, prostitution customers, pornographers, and pedophiles. Violence, sexually transmitted diseases, and substance abuse frequently result. The author discusses laws and programs designed to combat the commercial sexual exploitation of these vulnerable youth.

- Abstract
Sex Crimes: Perpetrators, Predators, Prostitutes, and Victims provides an in-depth examination of sexual criminality, its nature, characteristics, dimensions, and ramifications in American society. Within this context, the book will address both recognized and little known sex crimes, the magnitude of such crimes, sex offenders and victims, theories on sexual criminality and sex criminals and the criminal justice system. The book is divided into seven parts. Part I examines sex-related homicides as a reflection of sexual criminality; Part II focuses on rape crimes, including forcible rape in general, marital rape, date and acquaintance rape; female, same sex rape, and statutory rape. Part III explores incestuous crimes, including father-daughter incest, mother-child incest, and other intrafamilial sexual abuse. Part IV studies sexual predatory crimes, including child molestation, pedophilia, pornography and sex crimes; sex trafficking and sexual slavery; and other sexual abuse and paraphilias such as exhibitionism, voyeurism, bestiality, coprolagnia, and ritual sex abuse. Part V examines female (women and girls) prostitution crimes, as well as male prostitution. Part VI explores theories on sexual criminality, and Part VII focuses on the criminal justice system, sex crimes and offenders, including sex crime laws, arrests and sex offenders, and incarcerated sex criminals. Additionally, the illustrations supplement the text in exemplifying relevant data on sex crimes, criminals, and victims.

- Abstract
MALE CRIME AND DEVIANCE seeks to explore in-depth the types of offenses most identified with and committed by males, dynamics of male crime, characteristics of male offenders, how male criminality and delinquency compare with and differ from female delinquent and criminal behavior, explanations for male crime, and efforts at combating crime in this country. Particular attention is given to exploring the relationship between male aggression and masculinity, as well as the role that testosterone and other biological factors play in male crime and violence. The book also focuses on the correlation between male violence and aggressive behavior and firearms, violence involving intimates, male sexual violence, bias crimes, workplace violence, terrorism, male perpetrated sexual offenses, youth gang crime, and school violence. These areas of male criminality and deviance are examined within the context of all male offending, arrest, self-report, and inmate data, along with criminological theoretical approaches to understanding the causes and related factors of male deviant behavior. The book is written primarily for undergraduate and graduate level students for coursework in criminal justice, criminology, male aggression, violent behavior, homicide, youth studies, gang studies, delinquency, law, law enforcement, sociology, social science, psychology, biology, and related areas of study. However, it is appropriate as well for academicians, social scientists, psychologists, law officers, medical workers, and a general readership with a vested interest in antisocial behavior and its implications on the greater society.
