This study contributes to research on the doctoral experience of international students who are parents, and for whom the temporary experience of living elsewhere is both a challenge and a resource for all members of the family. The study investigated how a group of these students positioned themselves to their children's English and home language during their study abroad. A group of 12 international doctoral students from one Australian university and one primary school teacher took part in the study. The doctoral students were from a number of non-anglophone countries. Membership Categorisation Analysis was used to examine the identity categories invoked during focus group discussions. The categories bilingual, student, parent, tutor and spouse, the category devices family, study, nationality/language, time and location, and the attributes responsibility and inadequacy that emerged in the analysis, suggest that language issues are important considerations for international students with families, and need focused attention.

Abstract Environmental negotiations are complex, and conveying the interaction between science and policy in traditional teaching methods is challenging. To address this issue, innovative educational approaches like serious gaming and role-playing games have emerged. These methods allow students to actively explore the roles of different stakeholders in environmental decision-making and weigh for instance between sometimes conflicting UN Sustainable Development Goals or other dilemmas. In this work the phosphorus negotiation game (P-Game) is for the first time introduced. We present the initial quantitative and qualitative findings derived from engaging 788 students at various academic levels (Bachelor, Master, PhD, and Postdoc) across three continents and spanning 22 different countries. Quantitative results indicate that female participants and MSc students benefitted the most significantly from the P-Game, with their self-reported knowledge about phosphorus science and negotiation science/practice increasing by 71–93% (overall), 86–100% (females), and 73–106% (MSc students in general). Qualitative findings reveal that the P-Game can be smoothly conducted with students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. Moreover, students highly value their participation in the P-Game, which can be completed in just 2–3 h. This game not only encourages active engagement among participants but also provides valuable insights into the complex environmental issues associated with global phosphorus production. We strongly believe that the underlying methodology described here could also be used for other topics.

Abstract Due to the scarcity of wood in some countries, it is necessary to replace it with other raw materials and at the same time use the waste material. The aim of this research is to use poppy waste straw for the efficient conversion of possible lignocellulosic materials – pulps and particleboards. Their suitability for the production of composites is assessed on the basis of selected physical or mechanical properties. Tensile strength index, burst strength index and air permeability by Gurley have been identified as critical properties of pulp made from poppy straw through two delignification methods. The better mechanical properties, i.e., tensile strength index, were achieved at 52.7 N·m/g for the sodium pulp, but the nitrate-alkali method also showed corresponding values at 45.9 N·m/g. Similar parameters to those of bagasse or similar fast-growing plants were achieved in particleboard production. The results of this research are used to evaluate poppy straw as an alternative raw material to produce biocomposites.

This article discusses family language policy and the tensions between mothers' and children's language beliefs in two Vietnamese immigrant families in Melbourne. These tensions have frequently been discussed from the parental perspective, but it is less common to include the children's voice. We draw on a larger in-depth qualitative study of family language policy in Vietnamese families living in Australia to explore the language beliefs of both children and adults. Employing Fitzsimmons-Doolan's [2018. "Language Ideology Change Over Time: Lessons for Language Policy in the U.S. State of Arizona and Beyond." "TESOL Quarterly" 52 (1): 34-61. doi:10.1002/tesq.371] notions of pro-multilingual and pro-monolingual ideologies and Bourdieu's [1986. "The Forms of Capital." In "Handbook of Theory and Research for the Sociology of Education", edited by J. G. Richardson, 241-258. Greenwood Press] concept of capital, we explore family language policy from the perspectives of both children and their mothers, and show how these perspectives are associated with each other. Findings reveal the pro-monolingual stance of the children in opposition to the pro-multilingual stance of their mothers where the children and their mothers appeared to attach different degrees of value to English and Vietnamese. The findings reinforce the complexities in realising family language policy across languages.

PURPOSEThe availability of drugs and national public policies for patients with rare cancers, including sarcomas, varies in different parts of the world.METHODSIn this manuscript, we have conducted a comprehensive analysis to evaluate rare cancer policies in Latin American countries' national policy documents. Additionally, we have reviewed the approvals for sarcoma drugs in selected Latin American countries and compared them with US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA) approvals.RESULTSThe documents reviewed showed a lack of explicit focus on rare cancers, with no mention in 70% of the countries analyzed. Drug approval data reveal that in the last 15 years, the FDA and EMA have approved 19 and 13 drugs for sarcoma, whereas their Latin American counterparts, namely ANVISA, ANMAT, and COFEPRIS, approved six, eight, and seven drugs, respectively.CONCLUSIONOur data suggest that improving rare cancer and sarcoma care in Latin America requires enhanced collaboration for better rare cancer policies.

O artigo tem como proposta discutir como as políticas públicas de financiamento educacionais no Brasil, em especial o Programa Dinheiro Direto na Escola (PDDE), do Fundo Nacional de Educação (FNDE), tem exercitado a equidade em seus Programas, visando a melhoria da qualidade da Educação Escolar Quilombola. Objetivamos refletir sobre como o PDDE tem contribuído para a consolidação de uma educação mais plural e cidadã. É perceptível o esforço das políticas de financiamento educacional, em especial a do PDDE, em possibilitar a consolidação de uma gestão escolar democrática e equânime, porém, é necessário um aprimoramento da sua legislação para que atenda as especificidades das comunidades a serem atendidas pela Política. Ressalta-se que um exercício de mudança tem sido praticado, a fim de garantir a valorização dos pertencimentos e das identidades étnico e racial no contexto de uma política pública de financiamento da educação tão duradoura como é o PDDE.

ABSTRACT Pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma is an ultra-rare vascular sarcoma that most commonly affects young adults, with a male predominance. It is diagnosed using a combination of imaging studies, histopathological examinations, and immunohistochemical staining. Surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment for pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma, with the goal of achieving a wide local excision and reducing the risk of recurrence. The role of systemic therapies is not well established because of the rarity of pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma, uncertainty regarding its response to currently approved medications, and lack of randomized controlled trials. We describe the case of an 18-year-old male patient diagnosed with multifocal pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma of the left lower limb who was treated with everolimus in addition to denosumab, achieving a partial response that was consolidated with resection, radiofrequency ablation, and radiotherapy of multiple local lesions, achieving a long-lasting response. Following subsequent disease progression, the patient responded favorably to pazopanib, with no significant toxicities.

The recent implementation of The Victorian Curriculum F-10: EAL requires content teachers who teach EAL students to be familiar with the revised EAL curriculum for the purposes of planning and developing approaches to assist learners' development in English. In the literature and in curriculum frameworks, word knowledge is considered an important aspect of EAL students' learning. However, little is known about what pedagogical practices teachers across the curriculum perceive as being important, and use, in developing EAL students' vocabulary. In this study, we investigated linguistically responsive vocabulary teaching in a Year 7 science class. Our aim was to elucidate teachers' perceptions and practices in teaching vocabulary in science. The qualitative case study drew on principles of linguistically responsive instruction (LRI), which refers to practices for meeting the needs of students in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. Analysis of interview and classroom data from an EAL teacher and a science teacher revealed a range of LRI practices for developing word knowledge based on understanding the distinction between conversational and academic language, language learning principles, responsive teacher talk, plurilingual awareness, and the importance of social interaction for learners. We offer recommendations for a whole school approach to LRI, adaptation to online LRI, and curriculum development.

Astrocytes are crucial for the functioning of the nervous system as they maintain the ion homeostasis via volume regulation. Pathological states, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), affect astrocytes and might even cause a loss of such functions. In this study, we examined astrocytic swelling/volume recovery in both the brain and spinal cord of the SOD1 animal model to determine the level of their impairment caused by the ALS-like pathology. Astrocyte volume changes were measured in acute brain or spinal cord slices during and after exposure to hyperkalemia. We then compared the results with alterations of extracellular space (ECS) diffusion parameters, morphological changes, expression of the Kir4.1 channel and the potassium concentration measured in the cerebrospinal fluid, to further disclose the link between potassium and astrocytes in the ALS-like pathology. Morphological analysis revealed astrogliosis in both the motor cortex and the ventral horns of the SOD1 spinal cord. The activated morphology of SOD1 spinal astrocytes was associated with the results from volume measurements, which showed decreased swelling of these cells during hyperkalemia. Furthermore, we observed lower shrinkage of ECS in the SOD1 spinal ventral horns. Immunohistochemical analysis then confirmed decreased expression of the Kir4.1 channel in the SOD1 spinal cord, which corresponded with the diminished volume regulation. Despite astrogliosis, cortical astrocytes in SOD1 mice did not show alterations in swelling nor changes in Kir4.1 expression, and we did not identify significant changes in ECS parameters. Moreover, the potassium level in the cerebrospinal fluid did not deviate from the physiological concentration. The results we obtained thus suggest that ALS-like pathology causes impaired potassium uptake associated with Kir4.1 downregulation in the spinal astrocytes, but based on our data from the cortex, the functional impairment seems to be independent of the morphological state.

Introdução: O transplante de medula óssea (TMO) é o processo de substituição de uma medula óssea doente ou lesada por outra com função normal. No Brasil, as atividades assistenciais relacionadas ao cuidado direto ao paciente são supervisionadas por um enfermeiro, sendo outras atividades privativas desse profissional. Devido à complexidade desses pacientes, alguns programas de TMO podem optar por prover o cuidado de enfermagem exclusivamente por enfermeiros. Objetivos: (i) Desvelar a percepção dos enfermeiros relativa às competências exigidas durante o processo de cuidado a pacientes na unidade de TMO e (ii) identificar se os enfermeiros reconhecem incremento da qualidade em unidades de TMO que implementam o cuidado de enfermagem exclusivamente por enfermeiros. Métodos: Estudo descritivo-exploratório com método misto concorrente realizado em um hospital de grande porte da Zona Sul da cidade de São Paulo com enfermeiros atuantes do TMO no ano de 2023. Resultados: A partir da análise das entrevistas, foi possível elencar os resultados em três categorias: a) as competências necessárias para atuação do enfermeiro no TMO; b) o TMO como especialização para a enfermagem; c) relação do cuidado exclusivo do enfermeiro com os resultados no TMO. Conclusão: Cinco competências centrais foram identificadas: raciocínio clínico, tomada de decisão, trabalho em equipe, educação em saúde e liderança. Os profissionais reconhecem o incremento da qualidade dos cuidados de enfermagem prestados no TMO quando realizados exclusivamente por enfermeiros.

Researcher roles as insiders and outsiders are important in qualitative studies. Yet, the roles and perspectives of insider and outsider researchers working collaboratively in transnational learning contexts have received little research attention. This paper reports on a small-scale qualitative project that explored our research collaboration as insiders and outsiders. We investigated three undergraduate Chinese international pre-service teachers' academic experiences in one Australian university. The doctoral student researcher, as an insider who shared language and culture with the participants, undertook in-class observations and semi-structured interviews with the three participants while the outsider researchers developed and guided the overall project. In the course of data analysis, and using a reflexive lens, we were given insight into how our distinct cultural and linguistic identities and positionings steered our interpretations and enriched them as we made sense of them. In so doing we became aware of the ways in which our research plans and our own roles and dispositions were dynamically shaped and shifted as we worked with our participants and with each other. In this way, our research plan itself was changed while the process of interpreting the data became enriched and inspired confidence.

This study explored the language practices of a small group of international Chinese students in an anglophone Higher Education context where English was the medium of instruction. The context was the first year of an early childhood education course at an Australian university. Building on findings from research in conversation analysis on language alternation and medium of interaction, the analyses sought to unveil the students' classroom verbal and nonverbal practices as they switched between Mandarin and English. Findings show that students' preferred medium was monolingual: English for discussing taskwork and Mandarin for resolving disagreement or confusion, establishing understanding, and selecting a speaker. Alternation to Mandarin was accompanied by whispering and the embodied actions of 'hiding' behind the laptop while co-occurring laughter was used to signal a language switch or to index trouble or a delicate situation. These findings suggest that language choice was not simply a practice for restoring the preferred medium. Rather the students continued to speak Mandarin until the interactional motivation for its use was completed, which legitimized the use of their shared language. The paper ends with recommendations to inform pedagogy that is sensitive to the linguistic needs of international students in Higher Education in anglophone contexts.

This paper presents two key data sets derived from the Pomar Urbano project. The first data set is a comprehensive catalog of edible fruit-bearing plant species, native or introduced to Brazil. The second data set, sourced from the iNaturalist platform, tracks the distribution and monitoring of these plants within urban landscapes across Brazil. The study includes data from the capitals of all 27 federative units of Brazil, focusing on the ten cities that contributed the most observations as of August 2023. The research emphasizes the significance of citizen science in urban biodiversity monitoring and its potential to contribute to various fields, including food and nutrition, creative industry, study of plant phenology, and machine learning applications. We expect the data sets presented in this paper to serve as resources for further studies in urban foraging, food security, cultural ecosystem services, and environmental sustainability.
