Low-temperature sintering to fabricate MgB2 is considered a promising method because it reduces the formation of MgO and reduces the grain size, thereby increasing the critical current density. Chemical doping, ball milling of precursor and modifying the Mg source in precursor for low-temperature sintering have all been carefully investigated. However, the threshold of sintering temperature have been kept near 500 °C. A new in-situ method to low-temperature sintering using Mg(BH4)2 as a precursor is presented in this paper. Mg(BH4)2 decomposes into highly reactive nanoscale Mg and B in a molar ratio of 1:2 without impurities. In this method, only 2 h of sintering at 400 °C is required to completely react Mg with B to produce MgB2, and after 54 h sintering, the sample has comparable JC to the normal MgB2 from solid-state reaction method sintered at 800 °C. Daily average temperature data from 48 meteorological stations in Chinese oases that are within the distribution area of Populus euphratica were analyzed to determine the spatiotemporal responses of this tree to climate change. Specifically, the start and end date as well as the number of days that comprised the growing season were analyzed with a multi-year trend line and using the Mann-Kendall mutation test, inverse distance weighted interpolation (IDW) in the software ArcGIS, a Morlet wavelet power spectrum, and correlation analysis. The results of this study show that, over the last 56 years, the start date of the P. euphratica growing season has advanced, while the end date has been postponed, and the number of days that comprise the growing season have gradually increased. The changing trend rates recovered in this analysis for these three time slices are -1.34 d/10 a, 1.33 d/10a, and 2.66 d/10a (α ⩾ 0.001), respectively. Data show that while spatial disparity is extremely significant, it is nevertheless the case that along a southwest-to-northeast transect of Chinese oases, the later the start date of the P. euphratica season, the sooner the end data and the shorter the growing season. Mutations points in start and end date, as well as for the growing season overall were observed in 2001, 1989, and 1996, respectively, and the data presented in this paper show that, in particular, the date of this end of this period is most sensitive to climate warming. Growing season cycles for P. euphratica are between 3.56 years and 7.14 years, consistent with the periodicity of El Niño events, while a start date cycle between 3.56 years and 4.28 years is consistent with atmospheric circulation cyclicity. The causal analysis presented in this paper shows that the Asian polar vortex area index (APVAI), the Qinghai- Tibet Plateau index (TPI), the westerly circulation index (WCI), and carbon dioxide emissions (CDE) are the main factors influencing spatiotemporal changes in the growth of P. euphratica, the effect of latitude during the growing season is more significant than altitude, and the start date of the growing season is more significantly influenced by these factors than end date. In addition, data show that the start date, end date, and length of the growing season are all significantly correlated with their average corresponding monthly temperature (correlation coefficients are -0.875, 0.770, and 0.897; α⩾0.001). Thus, if the average temperature in March increases by 1°C, the start date of the growing season will advance by 2.21 days, while if the average temperature in October increases by the same margin then the seasonal end date will be delayed by 2.76 days. Similarly, if the average temperature between March and October increases by 1°C, the growing season will be extended by 7.78 days. The results of this study corroborate the fact that changes in the P. euphratica growing are sensitive to regional warming and are thus of considerable theoretical significance to our understanding of the responses of Chinese vegetation to climate change as well as to ecological restoration. Graphene is a well-known material with various potential applications. Here we report the manufacture of high-quality and large-scale monolayer graphene pasters via polyvinyl butyral (PVB). These pasters have good self-supporting properties and overcome the drawback of weak mechanical strength of PMMA. Manual manipulations to monolayer graphene become realizable via graphene pasters. Graphene pasters can be quickly diverted onto any substrate with sufficient contact and greatly minimize the challenges in graphene transfer, measurements, and other applications. The improved transfer process via graphene pasters protects the integrity of monolayer graphene and introduces few cracks or tears into graphene. Large-scale monolayer graphene films diverted onto SiO2/Si by using graphene pasters maintain low resistivity and low Dirac point, while also exhibiting a higher magnetoresistance than traditional results. High magnetoresistance up to 600% and signs of saturation at high magnetic fields can be seen. Obvious negative magnetoresistance at low magnetic fields due to weak localization also can be observed. High quality single-crystal magnesium diboride (MgB2) nanowires with lengths exceeding 10 μm were successfully synthesized by hybrid physical chemical vapor deposition. The magnetization and electrical transport properties of single-crystal MgB2 nanowires (NWs) were measured. The superconducting transition temperature of the NWs was 37 K, as confirmed by magnetization measurements. The disordered behavior of the nanowires was observed by four-terminal current–voltage characteristic measurements of an individual NW from T = 10 to 300 K. The temperature-dependent resistivity curves for seven NWs collapsed into a universal curve described by the variable range hopping model, showing intrinsic nonmetallic transport properties. This implies that the granular superconducting defect states are critical to the superconductivity of the individual MgB2 NWs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The experiment for preparing MgB2 thin films by electron beam (e-beam) annealing of Mg–B multilayer is reported. The annealing process lasts less than 1s, which effectively suppresses the volatility of Mg as well as the reaction of Mg and oxygen. The influence of annealing parameters on the film quality including exposure time, accelerating voltage and beam current is investigated. It is found that e-beam with lower accelerating voltage can acquire MgB2 film with smaller annealing energy density. Also, double e-beam scan annealing process helps to obtain more uniform MgB2 thin films than the single scan. This rapid annealing method synthesizes MgB2 thin films with critical temperature Tc of 35K and critical current density Jc at 15K of 7.6×106 Acm−2. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

HT C SQUID has a great potential in ultra-weak magnetic signal detections due to its advantages of energy saving and volume reduction of the overall system, including the cryogenics. However, the application of HT C SQUID is limited because lack of proper magnetic shielding. Superconducting magnetic shielding is an efficient way for HT C SQUID. In this work, we fabricate MgB 2 thick film on a stainless steel cylinder using HPCVD to make a preliminary attempt for SMS with MgB 2 films. High quality MgB 2 film is deposited on the inner side of a hollowed cylinder. The transition temperature of the film is 37.5 K, and the critical current density is 7.6 × 10 6 A⋅cm −2 at 10 K and 4.6 × 10 6 A⋅cm −2 at 20 K, which is comparable with the planar films. The shielding effectiveness of the cylindrical MgB 2 film is numerical simulated. Height and thickness of the cylindrical magnetic shielding designed according to the simulation result was calculated and a corresponding shielding effectiveness of 65 dB is obtained. MgB 2 has shown great potential in making medium strength superconducting magnet using electronic refrigeration without liquid helium. One of the major problem in building the MgB 2 superconducting magnet is the joints in the coils. An effective method of building a superconducting joint is crucial. In this work, we have demonstrated a novel process of building a superconducting joint utilizing sol-gel method. Two HPCVD MgB 2 thin film on SiC substrate is pasted face-to-face with Mg(BH 4 ) 2 •Et 2 O gel. After annealing in Mg vapor, Mg(BH 4 ) 2 •Et 2 O gel decomposed and turned to MgB 2 superconducting joint. The joint showed good connectivity between the two films and has a good T C of 34 K. Infield measurement of the joint showed that the joint work well at 20 K with the applied magnetic field up to 4 T. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we successfully fabricated superconducting joints for MgB 2 films. The sol-gel of Mg(BH 4) 2 ·Et 2 O was used as the glue. Two types of MgB 2 joints were shown in this work, a two-piece face-to-face joint, and a three-piece bridging joint. The sol-gel derived MgB 2 joints have shown very good superconducting performance, with a high superconducting critical temperature (T C) of 40 K, a high critical current (I C) of 340 mA at 0 T, and very nice current capacity in magnetic fields up to 4 T. Abstract: MgB2 thin films were prepared by ex-situ annealing of Mg/B multilayers. Different precursor, substrate and annealing condition were investigated. After annealed in a flow of Mg vapor with reducing hydrogen ambient for 1–4min, high quality 20nm-thick c-oriented MgB2 thin films with and critical current density J C =2×106 Acm−2 at 30K were obtained. The article presents a study which demonstrates the magnesium diboride (MgB2) superconducting whiskers synthesized by hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD). The HPCVD setups that were employed in this experiment were quartz chamber with induction heating and stainless steel chamber with resistivity heating. A scanning electron microscope was used to analyze the morphologies of the whiskers. It has observed an onset temperature of 39 K.

Superconducting MgB2 wires were prepared by exposing boron fiber to magnesium powder in high temperature. Pulse current method has been used to study the V–I characteristics systematically in a large current range. Using a scaling function, all the R–T curves in different field converge into a single universal curve. From the V–I curves, we find a much sharp N–S transition and in high field a reasonable large Jc is found. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Massive superconducting MgB(2) nanofibers are obtained for the first time from Mg(BH(4))(2). The technique optimizes reaction conditions to only 1 h at 460 °C and provides nanofibers which exhibited satisfying superconducting properties. The morphology transformation according to temperature changes and the special mechanism of precursor inductive synthesis are discussed.

In this work, MgB(2) whiskers were fabricated on a copper substrate by using the hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition, which was one of the most effective ways to make high quality pure MgB(2) films, with the possible growth mechanism discussed. The whiskers are hexagonal and conelike and grow along the [0001] direction with a single-crystal structure. The onset transition temperature is approximately 39 K, which is among the best in the published nanostructure MgB(2) papers. Fabrication of nanoscale MgB(2) whiskers provides the fundamental understanding of the effect of dimensionality and size on superconductivity.

We have measured the normal state temperature dependence of the Hall effect and magnetoresistance in epitaxial MgB2 thin films with variable disorders characterized by the residual resistance ratio RRR ranging from 4.0 to 33.3. A strong nonlinearity of the Hall effect and magnetoresistance have been found in clean samples, and they decrease gradually with the increase of disorders or temperature. By fitting the data to the theoretical model based on the Boltzmann equation and ab initio calculations for a four-band system, for the first time, we derived the scattering rates of these four bands at different temperatures and magnitude of disorders. Our method provides a unique way to derive these important parameters in multiband systems.
