In recent years, air sac parasitic helminths have been reported to cause severe disease in birds. In addition, various species appear to be expanding and infecting new avian hosts in various regions worldwide. In this context, an air sac nematode was initially detected in 2014 infecting the Eurasian scops owl, hospitalized in the local wildlife hospital in Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Years later, the parasite was detected in 2 other owl species. Air sac nematodes had never been reported in the Mallorcan Strigiformes before. A comprehensive molecular and morphological characterization analysis, including scanning electron microscopy, was required for species confirmation. The species was identified as Lissonema sicki , a parasite infrequently reported in South American owls. Since its first introduction to Mallorca, it has dramatically increased in prevalence in hospitalized birds, being highly prevalent in the Eurasian scops owl (41%), in the long-eared owl (11%) and in the barn owl (4%). The introduction pathway of this parasite to Europe remains unknown. This discovery underscores the expanding range and impact of L. sicki , emphasizing the importance of ongoing surveillance and research to comprehend and manage the implications of its emergence in new territories. We determined the prevalence of skin mites in the hair follicles of the abdomen and caudal areas of 94 wild house mice (Mus musculus domesticus) from seven Canary Islands (Spain). We detected and identified mites through real-time qPCR by comparing nuclear 18S rRNA gene sequences and, for the first time, sequences of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene. Three and one specimens from Fuerteventura and Tenerife, respectively, were positive for mites by qPCR. Demodex musculi was identified in all positive individuals. This result constitutes the first record regarding this species in the archipelago. The prevalence of mites within mice tested was of 4%, which was lower than that reported for other mammals such as dogs, cats, marmots and bats. This value was also lower than the percentages obtained in immunocompromised laboratory individuals or Robertsonian wild mice, but was similar to the value determined for wild standard specimens (2n = 40). Our results seem to indicate that skin mites are uncommon inhabitants of the Canary mice. Moreover, since the Canary mice harbour only one of the two species of skin mites that commonly infest mice, D. musculi and Myobia musculi may be restricted by the host species depending on the habitat. Simple Summary: The Lusitanian pine vole is an endemic rodent of the Iberian Peninsula, which has a burrowing behaviour and prefers to live underground. It feeds on bark and roots causing severe damage to trees. In Asturias (NW Spain), this species is considered a pest causing economic losses in apple orchards, damaging the tree, and sometimes even causing its death. With the aim to shed light on the helminth community of this rodent pest species and to elucidate which intrinsic and extrinsic factors affect its helminth species, a faunistic-ecological study was carried out. For this purpose, our own collection of 710 voles from several orchards of various locations in Asturias was used. The results of the ecological study revealed the influence of climate variables, the year and season of capture, as well as the host age, on the diversity of the helminth community and the infection parameters of helminth species, underlining the importance of their life cycles. Our findings on the helminth community of the Lusitanian pine vole in Asturias could be used to improve the biological methods applied to control the population of this rodent pest. Since the beginning of the 21st century five new coronaviruses inducing respiratory diseases in humans have been reported. These emergences has promoted research on coronaviruses in wildlife. We started the first eco-epidemiological study to screen the presence of coronaviruses circulating in mice and rats of four Canary Islands. Between 2015 and 2019, we obtained fecal samples of three rodent species (150 Mus musculus , 109 Rattus rattus and 1 Rattus norvegicus ) captured in urban and rural areas. Fecal samples were analyzed by nRT-PCR and the resulting sequences were compared to known diversity using Bayesian phylogenetic methods. We only found coronavirus RNA in house mice from El Hierro (10.53%), Tenerife (7.02%) and Lanzarote (5.26%) islands. All coronaviruses detected belong to the species Murine coronavirus belonging to the genus Betacoronavirus and subgenus Embecovirus , being all positive house mice captured in anthropogenic environment. The phylogenetic analysis shows that murine coronaviruses from the Canary Islands are related to European murine coronaviruses. Albeit data are still scarce in the region, the most probable origin of M. coronavirus present in the Canary Islands is continental Europe. According to temporal Bayesian phylogenetics, the differentiation between Canary and continental viruses seems to be quite recent. Moreover, murine coronaviruses from El Hierro, Tenerife and Lanzarote islands tend to segregate in different clades. This enlightens the potential role of rodents or other possibly invasive species in disseminating infectious diseases to remote places through exchanges with the continent.
