In this study, we conducted field experiments to assess the effects of the combined application of Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L., CMV) and red mud (RM) to remediate the cadmium-polluted acidic paddy soil. The results showed that the combined application increased the yield component index and improved the grain yields, compared with the control, RM1, RM2, and CMV treatments. However, the increased range of soil pH values in the CMV-RM1 and CMV-RM2 treatments was smaller than that of the RM1 and RM2 treatments at the different rice growth stages. The soil organic matter (SOM) contents of the RM-only treatments did not differ throughout the whole period, but were significantly different (p < 0.05) between CMV-RM2 and the control. Compared with the control, the combined application decreased the concentration of exchangeable Cd in the early rice soil. The combined application of CMV and RM substantially decreased the rice uptake of Cd. However, we found no significant difference (p < 0.05) between the CMV-RM1 and CMV-RM2 treatments. Therefore, compared with remediation with RM or CMV alone, we recommend the combined application of CMV and RM as an economical, highly effective, and replicable amendment for remediating acidic, Cd-polluted paddy soil. Rice cultivar is the most influential factor affecting methane emissions from double rice fields. A two-year field experiment was conducted at Huizhou, Guangdong province, South China, to identify from among nine cultivars those cultivars with high-yield potential and lower yield-scaled methane emissions (YSMEs). Methane emissions were measured using the static chamber – gas chromatograph method. Results indicate that the cultivars Qihuazhan (QH), Yexianzhan 8 (YX8) and Yue’erzhan (YE) provide higher rice grain yield (8.69%) with lower YSME (30.27%) compared to the other six cultivars (Yexianzhan 6, Yuejingsimiao, Hefengzhan, Huangsizhan, Huangruanzhan and Huangxiuzhan) (p < 0.05). In particular, QH has the highest yield potential (6777 kg ha−1) and lowest methane emission intensity (0.36 kg kg−1yield) capacity. Methane emissions from the double rice field was found to be significantly (p < 0.05) and positively correlated with tiller number, culm biomass and soil organic matter, dissolved soil organic carbon and total carbon content, but negatively correlated (p < 0.05) with rice harvest index (HI), and root and panicle biomass, suggesting that organic source strength provides the substrate of methane production while the oxidation potential in the rhizosphere and the methane transport capacity of rice roots and culm dominate the emissions of methane from soil to the atmosphere. Multivariate decision regression tree (DRT) analysis showed a significant class difference between QH, YX8 and YE with the other six cultivars. These three cultivars are suitable for promotion of low carbon agriculture in South China. DRT analysis also successfully illustrated a potential way to identify rice varieties for low YSME by decisive parameters of tiller number (<15), HI (>0.43) and nitrogen assimilation of leaves (<40). These findings suggest that optimization of rice cultivars may represent an effective way to address both food demand and climate change concerns by improving rice yields while simultaneously minimizing the impact of climate change per unit yield. Methane (CH4) is one of the key greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere with current concentration of 1859 ppb in 2017 due to climate change and anthropogenic activities. Rivers are of increasing concern due to sources of atmospheric CH4. However, knowledge and data limitations exist for field studies of subtropical agricultural river catchments, particularly in southern China. The headspace balance method and the diffusion model method were employed to assess spatiotemporal variations of CH4 diffusive fluxes from April 2015 to January 2016 in four order reaches (S1, S2, S3, and S4) of the Tuojia River, Hunan, China. Results indicated that both the dissolved concentrations and diffusive fluxes of CH4 showed obvious spatiotemporal variations. The observed mean concentration and diffusive flux of CH4 were 0.40 ± 0.02 μmol L−1 and 41.19 ± 2.50 µg m−2 h−1, respectively, showing the river to be a strong source of atmospheric CH4. The CH4 diffusive fluxes during the rice-growing seasons were significantly greater than the winter fallow season (an increase of 80.26%). The spatial distribution of CH4 diffusive fluxes increased gradually from (17.58 ± 1.42) to (55.56 ± 4.32) µg m−2 h−1 due to the organic and nutrient loading into the river waterbodies, with the maximum value at location S2 and the minimum value at location S1. Correlation analysis showed that the CH4 diffusive fluxes exhibited a positive relationship with the dissolved organic carbon (DOC), salinity, and water temperature (WT), while a negative correlation occurred between CH4 diffusive fluxes and the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, as well as the pH value. Our findings highlighted that a good understanding of exogenous nutrient loading in agricultural catchments will clarify the influence of human activities on river water quality and then constrain the global CH4 budget. Introduction: The lack of individualized treatment protocols and complicated procedures are important factors limiting the use of regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) technology in hemodialysis. This study aims to validate the safety and efficacy of a simplified individualized RCA protocol for hemodialysis., Materials and Methods: From June 2019 to August 2019, 45 patients with active bleeding or bleeding tendency undergoing maintenance hemodialysis in the Nephrology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University were randomly divided into a modified conventional RCA protocol group with a low-flux dialyzer, a simplified individualized RCA protocol group with a high-flux dialyzer, and a simplified individualized RCA protocol group with a low-flux dialyzer., Results: A total of 45 patients were included in this study. The mean age of the patients was 57.38 ± 19.05 years, and 78% were men. Forty-three patients completed 4 hours of hemodialysis, and the median total clotting scores in the 3 groups were 11, 12, and 12. Compared with the modified conventional RCA protocol group with a low-flux dialyzer, the 2 simplified individualized RCA protocol groups had better clotting scores for the dialyzer, arterial bubble trap, and single-pool urea clearance index (spKt/VBUN) and lower costs. Moreover, these parameters did not differ between the 2 simplified individualized RCA protocol groups. No electrolyte or acid-base imbalances or citrate poisoning was observed in any of the 3 groups. Adverse events did not differ significantly among the 3 groups., Conclusions: The simplified individualized RCA protocol is safe, effective, and easy to implement. Assessment of indirect emission factors (EF 5r ) of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) from agricultural river networks remains challenging, and results are uncertain due to limited data availability. This study compared two methods of assessing EF 5r using data from long-term observations at high temporal resolution in a typical agricultural catchment in subtropical central China. The concentration method (method 1) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2006 method (method 2) were employed to evaluate the emission factor. EF 5r estimated using method 1 (i.e., EF 5r1 ) was 0.00077 ± 0.00025 (0.00038-0.00097). EF 5r calculated using method 2 (i.e., EF 5r2 ) was lower than EF 5r1 , with a mean value of 0.00004 (0.000015-0.00012). Both EF 5r1 and EF 5r2 were significantly lower than the IPCC 2006 default value of 0.0025, suggesting that N 2 O emissions from China and world river networks may be grossly overestimated. A complex N 2 O production pathway and diffusion mechanism were responsible for the transfer of N 2 O from the sediment to river water and then to the atmosphere. These findings provide essential data for refining national greenhouse gas inventories and contribute evidence for downward revision of indirect emission factors adopted by the IPCC.
