Marine shells incorporate oxygen isotope signatures during growth, creating valuable records of seawater temperature and marine oxygen isotopic compositions. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) measures these compositions in situ at finer length‐scales than traditional stable isotope analyses. However, determining oxygen isotope ratios in aragonite, the most common shell mineral, is hampered by a lack of ideal reference materials, limiting the accuracy of SIMS‐based seawater temperature reconstructions. Here, we tested the capability of SIMS to produce seawater temperature reconstructions despite the matrix calibration challenges associated with aragonite. We cultured Anadara trapezia bivalves at four controlled seawater temperatures (13–28°C) and used strontium labeling to mark the start of the temperature‐controlled shell increment, allowing for more spatially precise SIMS analysis. An improved matrix calibration was developed to ensure more accurate bio‐aragonite analyses that addressed matrix differences between the pure abiotic reference materials and the bio‐aragonite samples with intricate mineral‐organic architectures and distinct minor and trace element compositions. We regressed SIMS‐IRMS biases of abiotic and biogenic aragonites that account for their systematic differences in major, minor, and trace elements, allowing for more accurate SIMS analyses of the temperature‐controlled shell increment. The thorough matrix calibration allowed us to provide a SIMS‐based seawater‐corrected oxygen isotope thermometer of T(°C) = 23.05 ± 0.36 − 4.48 · (δ18Oaragonite [‰ VPDB] − δ18Oseawater [‰ VSMOW] ± 0.25) and 103lnαaragonite‐seawater = (17.78 ± 0.88) · 103/T (K) − (29.44 ± 2.40) that agrees with existing aragonitic IRMS‐based thermometer relationships and improves the applicability of SIMS‐based paleo‐environmental reconstructions of marine bio‐aragonites. Plain Language Summary: In this study, we grew marine bivalves under tightly constrained aquaculture conditions at four different seawater temperatures and marked the start of the growth period in the shell structure using strontium labeling. The newly grown shell material between the strontium‐labeled increment and the shell edge was analyzed for its oxygen isotopic composition. The compositions were measured in situ using a high resolution ion microprobe and a newly developed analytical post‐processing strategy specifically designed for biomineral samples with mineral‐organic architectures. The strategy involved two reference materials and the major, minor, and trace element content in the shell and the reference materials. The new approach resulted in an accurate and robust model for determining past seawater temperatures from fossil or historic shells based on their oxygen isotope composition at over an order of magnitude finer length scales than traditional oxygen isotope analyses. Radiocarbon dates on charred plant remains are often used to define the chronology of archives such as lake cores and fluvial sequences. However, charcoal is often older than its depositional context because old-wood can be burnt and a range of transport and storage stages exist between the woodland and stream or lake bed ("inherited age"). In 1978, Blong and Gillespie dated four size fractions of charcoal found floating or saltating in the Macdonald River, Australia. They found larger fragments gave younger age estimates, raising the possibility that taphonomic modifications could help identify the youngest fragments. In 1978 each date required 1000s charcoal fragments. This study returns to a sample from the Macdonald River to date individual charcoal fragments and finds the inherited age may be more than 1700 years (mode 250 years) older than the collection date. Taphonomic factors, e.g., size, shape or fungal infestation cannot identify the youngest fragments. Only two fragments on short-lived materials correctly estimated the date of collection. In SE Australia, this study suggests that wood charcoal will overestimate the age of deposition, taphonomic modifications cannot be used to identify which are youngest, and multiple short-lived materials are required to accurately estimate the deposition age. We compare depth and temporal distributions of sub‐fossil assemblages of two cold‐water scleractinian corals on seamounts in the Southwest Pacific to help define the temporal variations of water mass properties in the Southern Ocean (SO) during deglaciation. Peaks in the deep‐water abundance of the two species complement one another, with Desmophyllum dianthus peaking around the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR), and Solenosmilia variabilis briefly during the late Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1) and during the Younger Dryas (YD). Environmental tolerances of the two species and the geochemistry of S. variabilis carbonate skeletons suggest that their secular distributions reflect complementary effects of temperature (higher at Antarctic Intermediate Water/Upper Circumpolar Deep Water depths during the YD and late HS1) and surface productivity (lower during the YD and HS1). Higher temperatures at depth we interpret as evidence of increased Zonal West Wind (ZWW)‐driven Ekman pumping during the late HS1 and YD, whereas coeval low surface production reflects poleward expansion of sub‐tropical water masses as a result of correlated poleward shifts of the ZWW belt and the Intertropical Convergence Zone. More broadly, a continuous deep coral population in the southwest Pacific that spans two species and three deglacial periods (HS1, ACR and the YD) and an early Holocene shift in coral distribution from deeper to shallower habitats appear to reflect large‐scale changes during deglaciation in SO temperature profiles and productivity. We help fill this gap by examining the environmental tolerances and distribution on sea mounts in the Southwest Pacific of two species of cold‐water corals to help better define oceanic conditions during deglaciation. The two species largely alternate in abundance, which suggests alternating periods of warm, but relatively unproductive conditions during the late Heinrich Stadial 1 and the Younger Dryas and a colder, but more productive intervening Antarctic Cold Reversal. These combinations appear to derive from increased wind‐driven upwelling of deep water in the Southern Ocean during the late HS1 and YD, but a coeval poleward shift in low productivity sub‐tropical surface water, driven by correlated shifts in the latitudes of the Southern Ocean zonal wind belt and the tropical Intertropical Convergence Zone. Foraminifera are widely used in paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic studies, providing information about past ocean conditions. However, in order to use these tracers, it is essential to obtain an accurate chronology. Radiocarbon has proven to be a powerful tool in developing robust chronologies. Sample sizes of a few milligrams of carbonate material are needed for precise radiocarbon determination using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). In the specific case of paleoceanographic and paleoenvironmental studies, Foraminifera microfossils are the most important indicator of oceanic conditions. However, for establishing the chronology of deposition, sample availability is often limited. In AMS facilities using solid ion sources, such as the Radiocarbon Laboratory of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (LAC-UFF), in Brazil, CO2 samples need to be converted to graphite after physical and chemical pre-treatment to remove contamination. Reducing the sample sizes increases the relative contribution of contamination and can favor increased background levels. In this work, we tested different amounts of 14C-free carbonate samples as a means to evaluate the pattern of contamination. For the sealed tube Zn/TiH2 graphitization method, we tested prebaking the graphitization tubes and compared storage procedures. As a result, the background for regular-sized samples was decreased, and accurate measurement of carbonate samples containing ca. 0.5 mg C could be performed. Prebaked graphitization tubes can safely be stored in desiccator cabinets for up to 4 weeks. Foraminifera samples with mass as low as 1 mg (ca. 0.1 mg C) can now be measured at the LAC-UFF AMS facility, provided that C contamination can be estimated and corrected. Radiocarbon dates on multiple individual charcoal fragments floating together down the Macdonald River, New South Wales, Australia, have calibrated ages spanning >1700 years. Partial explanations of this range of inherited ages can be attributed to the inbuilt age of living biomass, charcoalisation conditions, hillslope transport and storage and/or valley floor (fluvial) transport and storage, but the contribution of each of these components can be constrained only rarely. These results caution against using radiocarbon dating of charcoal as the sole dating technique to interpret Late-Holocene sedimentary histories. These findings also show that it is unlikely that deposit age has a dependable relationship to charcoal age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
