9. Candidate for the Double Gamow–Teller Giant Resonance in 48Ca Studied by the (12C, 12Be(0+2)) Reaction at 250 MeV/Nucleon.

Abstract

A new experimental method to search for the double Gamow–Teller giant resonance using the double charge exchange (⁠|$^{12}$| C, |$^{12}$| Be(0 |$^{+}_{2}$|⁠)) reaction is proposed and applied, for the first time, to a |${}^{48}$| Ca target at 250 MeV/nucleon using a |$^{12}$| C primary beam at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. The events with double isospin- and spin-flip in |${}^{48}$| Ca were selected by measuring decay |$\gamma$| -rays from |${}^{12}$| Be(0 |$^{+}_{2}$|⁠). A forward-peaking component in the measured double-differential cross sections was observed with an integrated |$0^\circ$| cross section of |$1.33 \pm 0.12$| μ b/sr in the excitation energy region below 34 MeV in |${}^{48}$| Ti. Reaction analyses based on distorted-wave Born approximation calculations and the multipole decomposition based thereon indicate that |$\sim$| 40% of the forward-peaking component originates from the double Gamow–Teller transitions. The transition strength of the double Gamow–Teller transition is evaluated from the extracted forward-peaking cross section. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We conducted experimental and theoretical studies of chiral condensate in the nuclear medium through precision spectroscopy of pionic Sn atoms and subsequent analyses. Abstract

Understandings of the nature of scientific inquiry (NOSI), as opposed to engaging students in inquiry learning experiences, are included in science education reform documents around the world. However, little is known about what students have learned about NOSI during their pre-college school years. The purpose of this large-scale follow-up international project (i.e. 32 countries and regions, spanning six continents and including 3917 students for the high school sample) was to collect data on what exiting high school students have learned about NOSI. Additionally, the study investigated changes in 12th grade students' NOSI understandings compared to seventh grade (i.e. 20 countries and regions) students' understandings from a prior investigation [Lederman et al. (2019). An international collaborative investigation of beginning seventh grade students' understandings of scientific inquiry: Establishing a baseline. "Journal of Research in Science Teaching," 56(4), 486-515. https://doi.org/10.1002/tea.21512]. This study documents and discusses graduating high school students' understandings and compares their understandings to seventh grade students' understandings of the same aspects of scientific inquiry for each country. It is important to note that collecting data from each of the 130+ countries globally was not feasible. Similarly, it was not possible to collect data from every region of each country. A concerted effort was made, however, to provide a relatively representative picture of each country and the world.

In definitive and adjuvant chemoradiotherapy settings, clinical outcomes were compared between cachexia and non-cachexia patients.Results: Forty patients were diagnosed with cachexia (20.8%). In the definitive setting, overall survival (OS) was significantly shorter in the cachexia group (3-year OS: 50.0% vs 88.5%; p < 0.01), and multivariate analysis identified UICC stage IV, baseline albumin of < 4 and cachexia as poor prognostic factors. However, cachexia was not significant in the adjuvant setting.Conclusion: Cancer cachexia was negatively associated with prognosis in patients with HNC who received definitive chemoradiotherapy. Here, we examined the efficacy of nivolumab in patients with histological subtypes or primary sites of HNC not included in the CheckMate-141 trial.Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of data collected prospectively from 97 patients who were treated with nivolumab for recurrent or metastatic HNC at our institution. The patients were assigned to three groups based on HNC primary site: 1) oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx, which were included in CheckMate-141 (n = 68), 2) nasopharynx (excluded in CheckMate-141, n = 7) and 3) other primary sites excluded in CheckMate-141 (n = 22) and assigned to two groups according to histological subtype: 1) SCC (included in CheckMate-141, n = 83) and 2) non-SCC (all sites excluded in CheckMate-141, n = 14). Survival outcomes and nivolumab treatment response were compared between the primary site and histological subgroups.Results: The median number of nivolumab treatments was 7 cycles (range, 1– 53 cycles) and the median follow-up time was 9.1 months (range, 0.66– 33.0 months). There were no significant differences in response rates between the three primary site subgroups (CheckMate-141 sites 22%, nasopharynx 43%, others 18%; p=0) or the two histological subtype subgroups (SCC 25%, non-SCC 7%, p=0). Similarly, overall survival and progression-free survival were comparable for patients stratified by primary site or histological subtype.Conclusion: No significant difference in response rates or survival outcomes was detected between nivolumab-treated HNC patients with primary sites and histological subtypes that were included versus excluded in the CheckMate-141 trial. Abstract

The very proton-rich 71Kr isotope was produced through the in-flight fragmentation of 78Kr on a beryllium target at RIKEN – Nishina Center in order to study its β-decay properties. A stack of double-sided silicon strip detectors, called WAS3ABi, was used as the decay station, where the detection of ion implants, β-decays and β-delayed protons took place. Beta-delayed γ-rays were measured using a system of 84 HPGe detectors, called EURICA, surrounding the decay station. The main goal of the present study was the precise measurement of the half-life of 71Kr, as in the literature there is an almost 10 σ difference between the most precise independent results. Implant–β time correlations, implant–proton time correlations and implant–β–γ time correlations were all used to derive the half-life value, followed by a thorough investigation of systematic uncertainties for each method. As these values were found to be consistent, the weighted average t1/2 = 94.40+19ms is reported as a new half-life value in this work. Furthermore a total of 26 previously unreported γ following the β-decay of 71Kr were also identified in the analysis.

Abstract

Half-lifes (T1/2) of exotic neutron-rich isotopes of Ba, La, Ce, Pr, and Nd were measured at the RIKEN Nishina Center. The experimental setup consisted of the BigRIPS in-flight separator for ion selection identification, the Advance Implantation Detector Array (AIDA) for ions and β detection, and the BRIKEN detector for neutron counting. Using this setup, 4 new T1/2 have been measured for the first time, and 38 T1/2 have been remeasured with improved precision in several cases. These new experimental data should help to constrain theoretical models for calculations of T1/2. The status of the experimental analysis and preliminary results are provided in this contribution.

Abstract

Using this arrangement, 4 new T1/2 and 14 new P1n were measured. Furthermore, 38 T1/2 and 2 P1n values were remeasured, decreasing the uncertainties for some of them. In addition to improving predictions of nucleosynthesis models that describe the production of the rare-earth peak at A ∼ 160 via the r-process, these additional experimental data should help to constrain theoretical models for calculations of T1/2 and Pxn in this region.

Abstract

The nuclear structure of $^{66}$Se, nucleus beyond the N=Z line on the proton-rich side of the valley of stability, was investigated by the neutron knock-out reaction $^{67}$Se($^{12}$C,X)$^{66}$Se using a $^{12}$C target. The analysis of the singles spectrum of the γ-rays emitted during the de-excitation of the populated low-lying excited states revealed two previously detected (927(4) keV, 1460(32) keV) and three new (744(6) keV, 1210(17) keV, 1661(23) keV) transitions. The 744-keV, the 1210-keV, and the 1460-keV transitions were found to be in coincidence with the one at 927 keV. The spectrum coincident with the 927-keV transition showed a further possible transition at 299(35) keV, which was obscured by significant atomic background in the singles spectrum. This transition might correspond to a peak previously reported at 273(5) keV that could not be assigned to $^{66}$Se unambiguously. Based on a comparison of the experimental data to theoretical calculations, four new excited states are proposed which suggest that $^{66}$Se exhibits shape coexistence.

Abstract

Unbound states in C17 were investigated via one-neutron removal from a C18 beam at an energy of 245 MeV/nucleon on a carbon target. The energy spectrum of C17, above the single-neutron decay threshold, was reconstructed using invariant mass spectroscopy from the measured momenta of the C16 fragment and neutron, and was found to exhibit resonances at Er=0.52(2), 0.77(2), 1.36(1), 1.91(1), 2.22(3) and 3.20(1) MeV. The resonance at Er=0.77(2) MeV [Ex=1.51(3) MeV] was provisionally assigned as the second 5/2+ state. The two resonances at Er=1.91(1) and 3.20(1) MeV [Ex=2.65(2) and 3.94(2) MeV] were identified, through comparison of the energies, cross sections and momentum distributions with shell-model and eikonal reaction calculations, as p-shell hole states with spin-parities 1/21− and 3/21−, respectively. A detailed comparison was made with the results obtained using a range of shell-model interactions. The YSOX shell-model Hamiltonian, the cross-shell part of which is based on the monopole-based universal interaction, was found to provide a very good description of the present results and those for the neighbouring odd-A carbon isotopes – in particular for the negative parity cross-shell states.

Abstract

International audience; The β decay of Te90142 to I89142 was investigated for the first time. The parent nucleus was produced by the in-flight fission of a U238 beam with an energy of 345 MeV per nucleon, impinging on a Be9 target at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN. Excited states in I142 were established by β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy. The observed (1+) states in I142 could be interpreted to be predominantly the ν0h9/2⊗π0h11/2 configuration formed by a Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron in the 0h9/2 orbital and a proton in the 0h11/2 orbital. Additional features of the (1+) states are discussed by comparing with neighboring heavier isotones, such as Cs144 and La146. In the context of deformed shell-model calculations, the (11+) state is closely related to the ν[5,3,2]3/2⊗π[5,5,0]1/2 configuration, which may be related to the weak Gamow-Teller transition strength.

Abstract

The isotopic production cross sections for the reactions of 136Xe induced by proton, deuteron and carbon at 168 MeV/u were obtained by using the inverse kinematics technique at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The target dependence of the cross sections was investigated systematically. It was found that for the light-mass products, the cross sections on carbon are larger than those on deuteron and proton. The measured cross sections on proton were compared with the previous data at higher reaction energies to study the energy dependence. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical calculations including both the intranuclear cascade and evaporation processes using PHITS and with the EPAX and SPACS empirical parameterizations.

Abstract

The β-decay of the even-even nucleus $^{70}$Kr with Z=N+2, has been investigated at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory (RIBF) of the RIKEN Nishina Center using the BigRIPS fragment separator, the ZeroDegree Spectrometer, the WAS3ABI implantation station and the EURICA HPGe cluster array. Fifteen γ-rays associated with the β-decay of $^{70}$Kr into $^{70}$Br have been identified for the first time, defining ten populated states below Eexc=3300 keV. The half-life of $^{70}$Kr was derived with increased precision and found to be t1/2=45.19±0.14 ms. The β-delayed proton emission probability has also been determined as εp=0.545(23)%. An increase in the β-strength to the yrast 1$^{+}$ state in comparison with the heaviest Z=N+2 system studied so far ($^{62}$Ge decay) is observed that may indicate increased np correlations in the T=0 channel. The β-decay strength deduced from the results is interpreted in terms of the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) and also with a schematic model that includes isoscalar and isovector pairing in addition to quadrupole deformation. The application of this last model indicates an approximate realization of pseudo-SU(4) symmetry in this system.

Abstract

International audience; The β-decay scheme of Te138 and the level structure of I138 is reported for the first time. The experiment was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN, as one of the EUROBALL-RIKEN Cluster Array campaigns. Secondary radioactive ions, including Te138 and Sb138, were produced by the in-flight fission of a U238 beam with the energy of 345 MeV per nucleon. From the β decay of Te138, the level scheme of I138 was supplemented with new spin and parity assignments, such as the low-lying negative-parity states and a positive-parity 1+ state. This 1+ state can be interpreted as being associated with the π0h11/2⊗ν0h9/2 partner orbital configuration populated by the Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron in the 0h9/2 orbital and a proton in the 0h11/2 orbital. Details of the structure of I138 are discussed in terms of the proton-neutron interactions and Gamow-Teller transition strength within the theoretical context of shell-model calculations.
