Abstract

In the last few years, many reports have confirmed the presence of WU, KI and Merkel cell (MC) polyomaviruses (PyV) in respiratory samples wordwide, but their pathogenic role in patients with underlying conditions such as cystic fibrosis is still debated. To determine the prevalence of MCPyV, WUPyV and KIPyV, we conducted a 1-year-long microbiological testing of respiratory specimens from 93 patients with cystic fibrosis in Brescia, Italy. We detected PyV DNA in 94 out of 337 analysed specimens. KIPyV was the most common virus detected (12.1%), followed by WUPyV (8.9%) and MCPyV (6.8%). We found an intriguing association between the presence of MCPyV and the concurrent isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as with the patient status, classified as chronically colonized with P. aeruginosa. Our study adds perspective on the prevalence and the potential pathogenic role of PyV infections.

Abstract

The Data Acquisition system for the KLOE experiment, presently running at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati DAΦNE collider, has been designed to sustain an acquisition throughput of 50 Mbyte / s for an event rate of 10 kHz . Its two major components are the front end data readout, based on custom buses, and a complex network of computers and storage devices hosting a set of distributed processes. The end result is a seamless data transport from the readout system to the storage library, accompanied by concurrent on line calibrations and data quality control.

Abstract

We report on a new measurement of the K L –K S mass difference Δm using the CPLEAR full data sample of neutral-kaon decays to e πν . The result is Δm =(0.5295±0.0020 stat ±0.0003 syst )×10 10 ℏ/s. It includes earlier data reported in R. Adler et al., CPLEAR Collaboration, Phys. Lett. B 363 (1995) 237. A measurement of the ΔS = ΔQ violating parameter Re( x ) is also obtained.

Abstract

Events containing an isolated prompt photon with high transverse energy, together with a balancing jet, have been observed for the first time in photoproduction at HERA.The data were taken with the ZEUS detector, in a $\gamma p$ centre of mass energy range 120--250 GeV. The fraction of the incoming photon energy participating in the production of the prompt photon and the jet, $x_\gamma$, shows a strong peak near unity, consistent with LO QCD Monte Carlo predictions. In the transverse energy and pseudorapidity range $5\le \eTg < 10$ GeV, $-0.7 \le \eta^\gamma < 0.8$, $\eTj\ge 5$ GeV, and $-1.5\le \eta^{jet}\le 1.8$, with $\xgO > 0.8,$ the measured cross section is $15.3 \pm 3.8 \pm 1.8 pb$, in good agreement with a recent NLO calculation., Comment: 22 pages including 8 figures

Abstract

CP violation has been observed as a time-dependent rate asymmetry between the decays ${⩈erline K}^0 ⌝ghtarrow ≪^{0} ≪^{0}$ and K0 → π0π{0}, where the neutral kaons are produced with definite and individually known strangeness in ${⋏r p}p ⌝ghtarrow{⩈erline K}^0 K^+≪^- $ or pp → K0 K− π+. A special technique for the data analysis has been developed. The values obtained for ϕ00 and ¦ η00¦ are in agreement with those of previous measurements of CP violation.

Abstract

The method for studying semileptonic neutral kaon decays at CPLEAR is presented together with a preliminary data analysis. For the first time a direct determination of T violation is shown to be possible and low statistics results are given. From the same data the K(L)-K(S) mass difference, DELTAm, the CP violation parameter of K(S), epsilon(S), and the parameter x testing the DELTAS = DELTAQ rule are also obtained. Nuclear Physics A

Abstract

The CPLEAR experiment is aiming at precise CP violation tests using initially pure K0- and K0BAR beams from the intense source provided by the annihilation of the LEAR pBAR-beam in hydrogen. The strangeness tagging efficiency and the systematic errors have been studied and found to be in agreement with the design specifications. The measurement of the differential time asymmetry of the pi+pi- decays allowed the direct observation of differences in the decay rates of particles and antiparticles.The CP violating parameters were determined as \eta+/-\ = (2.32 +/- 0.14) . 10(-3) and phi+/- = 42.3-degrees +/- 4.4-degrees. First results in the reconstruction and analysis of the neutral kaon decays into two neutral pions and the K(e)3 decay are presented. Nuclear Physics B

Abstract

The aim of the CP LEAR experiment is to study symmetry-violation effects, making use of tagged K0's and K0's. The detector, although missing some electronic components, has been operational for a few weeks at the end of 1989 at the CERN Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). At the moment, the analysis of the data is in progress. This paper gives a description of the experimental method and of the detector; the sensitivities of some measurements and some preliminary results are also discussed.

Abstract

In the last few years, many reports have confirmed the presence of WU, KI and Merkel cell (MC) polyomaviruses (PyV) in respiratory samples wordwide, but their pathogenic role in patients with underlying conditions such as cystic fibrosis is still debated. To determine the prevalence of MCPyV, WUPyV and KIPyV, we conducted a 1-year-long microbiological testing of respiratory specimens from 93 patients with cystic fibrosis in Brescia, Italy. We detected PyV DNA in 94 out of 337 analysed specimens. KIPyV was the most common virus detected (12.1%), followed by WUPyV (8.9%) and MCPyV (6.8%). We found an intriguing association between the presence of MCPyV and the concurrent isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as with the patient status, classified as chronically colonized with P. aeruginosa. Abstract

Plastic bronchitis is a rare disorder in pediatric age. This disease can cause life-threatening episodes. Broncoscopy plus bronchial lavage is considered the gold standard therapeutic technique. Knowledge of this disease is mandatory to perform correct diagnosis and provide prompt treatment. The authors report the history of a 5-year-old girl affected by plastic bronchitis who was successfully treated by a conservative therapy avoiding the traditional more invasive management., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Abstract

Background: Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor Associated Periodic Syndrome (TRAPS) is a hereditary autoinflammatory syndrome characterized by recurrent episodes of fever and localized inflammation. Clinical presentation can be very variable in terms of duration of fever attacks, periodicity, and accompanying manifestations. One of the most characteristic symptoms is the occurrence of migrating skin rash with myalgia that is sustained by monocytic inflammation., Observations: We herein present the case of a family suffering from TRAPS who had been misdiagnosed for a long period of time and whose main symptom was migrating angioedema. Skin biopsy from one of the patients documented a monocytic panniculitis. All the living patients responded dramatically to anakinra treatment., Conclusions: The classic symptom of migratory angioedema with myalgia in TRAPS can be produced by monocytic panniculitis.This manifestation is so characteristic of TRAPS that its occurrence, even in the absence of other manifestations, should prompt genetic analysis. Our patient's condition responded promptly to anakinra treatment.
