Women often feel dissatisfied with their appearance after comparing themselves to other females who epitomize the thin-ideal standard of beauty. The current study posits that women associate a thin-ideal female body type with positive life-success, and that it may be this psychological link that drives feelings of negativity toward the self after such upward social comparisons. The results revealed that women reported more self-dissatisfaction and less optimism about their possible future life outcomes after exposure to a thin-ideal female target that ostensibly had a successful life than when the target ostensibly had an unsuccessful life. Past research indicates that many college students engage in heavy drinking and that these drinking patterns oftentimes lead to alcohol-related problems. The current study contributes to the literature on college drinking by investigating treatment-seeking attitudes among students in relation to their alcohol education background, alcohol environment, alcohol consumption, and perceived and actual drinking problems. A total of 878 students from five New York State colleges were randomly selected through the use of complete student telephone directories provided by students' respective college administrations for a telephone interview. The results revealed that alcohol education increases students' positive attitudes toward treatment, which may help them to reduce their heavy drinking and alcohol problems. Background: Little attention has been paid to quality improvement (QI) capacity within smaller primary care practices which comprise nearly half of all primary care settings. Strategies for external support to build such capacity include practice facilitation (PF), shared learning opportunities, and educational outreach. Although PF has proven effectiveness, little is known about the comparative effectiveness of combining these strategies. Here, we describe the protocol of the "Healthy Hearts Northwest" (H2N) study, a randomized trial designed to address these questions while improving risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Methods/design: The targeted enrollment is 250 smaller primary care practices across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. The study is utilizing a two-by-two factorial design to assess four different combinations of practice support: PF alone, PF with educational outreach, PF with shared learning opportunities, or PF with both. A mixed methods approach is being used for evaluation and will include data from (1) baseline and follow-up practice and staff surveys; (2) baseline and quarterly clinical performance measurement from each practice on four cardiovascular risk factors: appropriate aspirin use, blood pressure control, lipid management and smoking cessation support; and (3) a quality improvement capacity assessment (QICA) survey used by external practice facilitators to guide improvement efforts. Discussion: Results from this study will inform future large-scale practice improvement initiatives by providing comparisons of promising external practice support strategies and advance our understanding of how to build QI capacity in primary care. Some members of stigmatized groups, such as Asian women, may be more likely to experience negative self-evaluations after exposure to a mainstream beauty standard than members of other stigmatized groups, such as Black women. In this study, 54 Asian women, 52 Black women, and 64 White women, were exposed to mainstream standards of beauty and compared themselves to these idealized images. It was hypothesized that although Black women would find these comparisons irrelevant, Asian women would see these targets as relevant for their comparisons, reflecting their striving for mainstream beauty standards. The results indicated that Black women did not find mainstream standards as relevant to themselves, and reported positive self-evaluations generally and about their bodies in particular. Asian women, on the other hand, responded differently than Black women and were more likely to endorse mainstream beauty standards in a similar fashion to White women. The development of the duplex scanner has made the diagnosis of carotid arterial disease easy to those trained in its interpretation. The difficulty lies in the ability to define the patient population most likely to benefit from early diagnosis and treatment. All patients referred to the vascular laboratories at two major hospitals for evaluation of neurologic symptoms were entered into the study. The indications for the study, comorbid conditions, and medications were tabulated and compared with the results of the carotid duplex scan. The purpose was to see whether there was a relationship between the severity of carotid arterial disease and symptoms. A total of 5807 carotid duplex scans were performed on 5001 patients. There were 525 patients (11%) with an internal carotid artery stenosis of >70 per cent and 252 patients (5%) with an occlusion of the internal carotid artery. In addition, there were a group of 139 patients with severe bilateral carotid disease. Bruit and a history of known carotid disease were the only indications that were statistically related to severe carotid arterial disease. Smoking, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, cardiac conditions, and hyperlipidemia were also statistically related to patients with significant carotid disease. This study indicates that the classic indications for carotid duplex scans such as transient ischemic attack, amaurosis fugax, and dizziness have no correlation with the severity of the disease.
