6. Demotivation and Dropout in Adult EFL Learners

Abstract

This study assesses the reasons behind learner dropout in adult EFL environments. Differences between two groups -- dropouts (N=154) and persistent learners (N=106) -- are examined using a questionnaire with qualitative and quantitative components. The study focussed on three areas: characteristics of the two groups (such as age and proficiency), their attitudes (self-efficacy, attitude to the language), and dropouts' perceptions of their language-learning experience. Significant differences were found in age and proficiency, among others, as well as in attitudes to the teacher and the language. When degree of demotivation is considered, further differences arise in attitudes to the course and in learners' perceived need to learn English for work. Dropouts tend to retain negative views of their teacher and of the course, showing that in-class factors are powerful demotives in adult language learning. Demotivated learners tended to attribute dropout to external factors, commonly mentioning poor teaching practice, a lack of speaking practice, and a discrepancy between their desired level and their perceived 'stagnant' level. The findings from this study inform teacher and administrator attitudes and behaviour in FL academies, helping them to identify learners who may be susceptible to, or who have already started down, the path to dropout.

10. Refinement of quantitative MRI as an outcome measure in inherited neuropathies

Abstract

Recent acceleration in discovery of potential drug treatments for inherited neuromuscular diseases (NMD) heralds the urgent need for scientifically sound clinical trials. Given the rarity and slow progression of most of these conditions, simply increasing sample size, or extending trial duration to increase study power, are not viable options. Trials in NMD are in desperate need of highly responsive outcome measures. Lower limb muscle quantitative MRI (qMRI) allows non-invasive assessment of sequelae of nerve and muscle disease. It has recently been shown to be reliable, valid and responsive in a number of NMD, but further refinement is vital in order to ensure the ability to undertake rigorous and meaningful clinical trials in small cohorts of patients with rare and slowly progressive diseases, over short durations. This thesis aims to examine and improve qMRI responsiveness for application in trials for NMD. Two separate inherited neuropathies have been studied. In Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A), extended follow up has revealed that qMRI has large internal responsiveness over five years, measuring significant fat fraction (FF) change of 0.7 ± 0.6%/year with standardised response mean (SRM) of 1.07 over 5 years. Excellent validity of qMRI-determined FF is confirmed by strong correlation with clinical measures at baseline, and longitudinal validity is demonstrated for the first time in CMT1A with strong correlation with changes in CMT examination score and remaining muscle area. In Hereditary Sensory Neuropathy type 1, qMRI measures significant FF change at all anatomical levels examined, with large responsiveness at calf levels (distal calf FF change 2.2 ± 2.7%, SRM=0.83; proximal calf FF change 2.6 ± 3.0%, SRM=0.84 over 12 months). In both diseases, significant muscle fat gradients are shown to exist with the potential to devastate or enhance longitudinal analysis. FF change is predicted by baseline FF and other MRI measures in both diseases. Improvement in qMRI responsiveness is demonstrated through a host of evidence-based manipulations aimed at maximising and homogenising mean FF change. Quantitative MRI determined FF is shown to be highly responsive as an outcome measure in two different inherited neuropathies, and is ready to be used as a primary outcome measure in drug trials for rare neuromuscular diseases.

An N-heterocyclic stannylene :Sn(NONAd) (NONAd = [O(SiMe2NAd)2]2−, Ad = 1-adamantyl), reacts rapidly with 2,4,6-tricyclohexylphenyl azide (TCHP)N3, affording a stannaimine, (NONAd)Sn＝N(TCHP). Solutions of (NONAd)Sn＝N(TCHP) react immediately with carbon dioxide (CO2) to give a [2+2]-cycloaddition product, which, upon heating, subsequently engages in a metathesis process to give [Sn(NONAd)(μ-O)]2 and the bulky isocyanate, (TCHP)NCO. Abstract

Simple Summary: Estimating the risk of postoperative complications is important for shared decision-making with the patient. This also helps multidisciplinary teams to plan preoperative management and postoperative care and predict duration of recovery. In this retrospective pilot study, we aim to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the P-POSSUM and ACS-NSQIP surgical risk calculators in predicting postoperative complications in gynaecological–oncological (GO) robotic surgery (RS). We were able to demonstrate that the ACS-NSQIP risk tool showed 90% accuracy in prediction of five major complications and mortality. Purpose: In this retrospective pilot study, we aim to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the P-POSSUM and ACS-NSQIP surgical risk calculators in predicting postoperative complications in gynaecological–oncological (GO) robotic surgery (RS). Methods: Retrospective data collection undertaken through a dedicated GO database and patient notes at a tertiary referral cancer centre. Following data lock with the actual post-op event/complication, the risk calculators were used to measure predictive scores for each patient. Baseline analysis of 153 patients, based on statistician advice, was undertaken to evaluate P-POSSUM and ACS-NSQIP validity and relevance in GO patients undergoing RS performed. Results: P-POSSUM reports on mortality and morbidity only; ACS-NSQIP reports some individual complications as well. ACS-NSQIP risk prediction was most accurate for venous thromboembolism (VTE) (area under the curve (AUC)-0.793) and pneumonia (AUC-0.657) and it showed 90% accuracy in prediction of five major complications (Brier score 0.01). Morbidity was much better predicted by ACS-NSQIP than by P-POSSUM (AUC-0.608 vs. AUC-0.551) with the same result in mortality prediction (Brier score 0.0000). Moreover, a statistically significant overestimation of morbidity has been shown by the P-POSSUM calculator (p = 0.018). Conclusions: Despite the limitations of this pilot study, the ACS-NSQIP risk calculator appears to be a better predictor of major complications and mortality, making it suitable for use by GO surgeons as an informed consent tool. 19. Navigating the Neoliberal University: Reflecting on Teaching Practice as a Teacher-Researcher-Trade Unionist

Abstract

This article reflects upon the neoliberalisation of higher education and its effects on teaching practice. It is argued that a neoliberal discourse of teaching excellence has the effect of working against, and potentially undermining, the emancipatory potential of higher education. The article reflects upon attempts to navigate disciplinary power in the neoliberal university and considers whether critical, emancipatory praxis is possible or if complicity in, and co-option by, neoliberalism is inevitable. Ultimately, it is concluded that individual teachers have some scope to pursue approaches which counter neoliberal dominance but that this is heavily constrained. A broader, collective, project will therefore be necessary if alternative (critical, emancipatory) visions of teaching and learning in higher education are to successfully challenge neoliberal hegemony and the negative effects of this in the academy.

22. Mathematical modelling of calcium signalling

Abstract

Calcium (Ca2+) plays an integral role in a vast array of signalling pathways within both animals and plants. The study of these pathways has proven to be a fruitful avenue of research for experimental biologists and mathematical modellers. While the signalling processes have been well studied in animals, the same cannot be said of plants. This work takes a mathematical look at two important Ca2+ signalling pathways in plants, with a focus on how these signals are generated. Nuclear Ca2+ oscillations in legumes occur at a key step in the development of symbioses. The oscillations occur both inside the nucleus and in the perinuclear cytoplasm, and are temporally coordinated. We present and develop a model for simulating diffusion on the surface of the nucleus and relate the properties of this signalling to behaviour in the bulk. We show that diffusion of Ca2+ through the nuclear pore complexes provides a possible mechanism for this coordination and that this mechanism is robust to differences in Ca2+ diffusion rates in the two compartments or to different numbers of Ca2+ channels. Ca2+ has also been seen to propagate a wave travelling systemically through the root in response to salt stress. This wave is essential to the transcription of stress response genes in the leaves. We examine a range of di�erent models for propagation of the wave, demonstrating that a combined reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Ca2+ wave cooperatively propagate the signal. The presence of this accompanying ROS wave was confirmed in experiments by our collaborators. The present study highlights two very different Ca2+ signals and demonstrates the value of mathematical modelling for interpreting, understanding and furthering experimental investigations.

28. A critical stylistic analysis of the textual meanings of 'feminism', 'feminist(s)' and 'feminist' in UK national newspapers, 2000-2009

Abstract

This thesis is a critical stylistic analysis of the meanings of the lexemes 'feminism', 'feminist(s)' and 'feminist' in UK national newspapers, 2000-2009. It uses the textual-conceptual functions set out in Jeffries (2010a) to investigate the linguistic contexts in which these lexemes occur within the data in order to assess to what extent the movement, the people who represent it, and things that are described as feminist are imbued with different textually constructed meanings. The analysis tests previous studies' findings concerning portrayals of feminism and feminists in the media. Expanding on and responding to this research, this study reports on five main findings: • 'Feminism', 'feminist(s)' and 'feminist' have positive, as well as negative, meanings. • 'Feminism' and 'feminists' are a western phenomenon, with different types in the past and present. • 'Feminism' has a complex meaning, with no single, universal definition and a variety of types. • 'Feminism' is presented as having undergone changes in meaning, as antonymous to other ideas and containing opposed meanings. • Portrayals of 'feminism' are complex, with articles recognising and contesting different meanings of the lexemes. These findings both confirm and question previous studies, which have argued that feminism and feminists are portrayed negatively in newspaper texts. It provides linguistic evidence to support claims made by other non-linguistic studies of the same genre and time period: that portrayals of feminism are 'fragmented' (Mendes, 2011a, p. 49) and that they present feminism as consisting of approved and disapproved types (Dean, 2010). I also discuss the lexemes 'feminism', 'feminist(s)' and 'feminist' in with regard to contested meaning, using critical stylistic tools to analyse how newspaper articles textually construct different meanings of the lexemes, and explicitly discuss and compare different definitions. The thesis argues that the analysis of textual meaning can be used to explore how the meanings of a lexeme or set of lexemes that 'involve ideas and values' (Williams, 1983, p. 17) are constructed in a variety of ways through the linguistic context in which they occur. I also reflect on the usefulness of the textualconceptual functions in the manual analysis of a large dataset, identifying ways in which an analysis that seeks to provide as full as possible an account of the textual construction of meaning can produce findings not possible through other means of analysis.

29. Reductions of Arenes using a Magnesium‐Dinitrogen Complex.

Abstract

In this contribution, we present "Birch‐type", and other reductions of simple arenes by the potassium salt of an anionic magnesium dinitrogen complex, [{K(TCHPNON)Mg}2(μ‐N2)] (TCHPNON=4,5‐bis(2,4,6‐tricyclohexylanilido)‐2,7‐diethyl‐9,9‐dimethyl‐xanthene), which acts as a masked dimagnesium(I) diradical in these reactions. This reagent is non‐hazardous, easy‐to‐handle, and in some cases provides access to 1,4‐cyclohexadiene reduction products under relatively mild reaction conditions. This system works effectively to reduce benzene, naphthalene and anthracene through magnesium‐bound "Birch‐type" reduction intermediates. Cyclohexadiene products can be subsequently released from the magnesium centres by protonolysis with methanol. In contrast, the reduction of substituted arenes is less selective and involves competing reaction pathways. For toluene and 1,3,5‐triphenylbenzene, the structural authentication of "Birch‐type" reduction intermediates is conclusive, although the formation of corresponding 1,4‐cyclohexadiene derivatives was low yielding. Reduction of anisole did not yield an isolable "Birch‐type" intermediate, but instead gave a C−O activation product. Treating triphenylphosphine with [{K(TCHPNON)Mg}2(μ‐N2)] resulted in the extrusion of both biphenyl and dinitrogen to afford a magnesium(II) phosphanide [{K(TCHPNON)Mg(μ‐PPh2)}2]. Reduction of fluorobenzene proceeded via C−F activation of the arene, and isolation of the magnesium(II) fluoride [{K(TCHPNON)Mg(μ‐F)}2]. Finally, the two‐electron reduction of 1,3,5,7‐cyclooctatetraene (COT) with [{K(TCHPNON)Mg}2(μ‐N2)] yielded a complex, [{K(TCHPNON)Mg}2(μ‐COT)], incorporating the aromatic dianion (COT2−). Abstract

The ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors LIGO and Virgo have enabled the birth of multi-messenger GW astronomy via the detection of GWs from merging stellar-mass black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs). GW170817, the first binary NS merger detected in GWs and all bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, is an outstanding example of the impact that GW discoveries can have on multi-messenger astronomy. Yet, GW170817 is only one of the many and varied multi-messenger sources that can be unveiled using ground-based GW detectors. In this contribution, we summarize key open questions in the astrophysics of stellar-mass BHs and NSs that can be answered using current and future-generation ground-based GW detectors, and highlight the potential for new multi-messenger discoveries ahead. Numerous industrial processes utilise gaseous chemical feedstocks to produce useful chemical products. Atmospheric and other small molecule gases, including anthropogenic waste products (e.g. carbon dioxide), can be viewed as sustainable building blocks to access value-added chemical commodities and materials. While transition metal complexes have been well documented in the reduction and transformation of these substrates, molecular complexes of the terrestrially abundant alkaline earth metals have also demonstrated promise with remarkable reactivity reported towards an array of industrially relevant gases over the past two decades. The bulky β‐diketiminate ligand frameworks [BDIDCHP]− and [BDIDipp/Ar]− (BDI=[HC{C(Me)2N‐Dipp/Ar}2]− (Dipp=2,6‐diisopropylphenyl (Dipp); Ar=2,6‐dicyclohexylphyenyl (DCHP) or 2,4,6‐tricyclohexylphyenyl (TCHP)) have been developed for the kinetic stabilisation of the first europium (II) hydride complexes, [(BDIDCHP)Eu(μ‐H)]2, [(BDIDipp/DCHP)Eu(μ‐H)]2 and [(BDIDipp/TCHP)Eu(μ‐H)]2, respectively. These complexes represent the first step beyond the current lanthanide(II) hydrides that are all based on ytterbium. Tuning the steric profile of β‐diketiminate ligands from a symmetrical to unsymmetrical disposition, enhanced solubility and stability in the solution–state. This provides the first opportunity to study the structure and bonding of these novel Eu(II) hydride complexes crystallographically, spectroscopically and computationally, with their preliminary reactivity investigated. Abstract

The use of cell lines derived from elective abortions in the development and production of COVID vaccines was opposed by the Catholic church who encouraged pharmaceutical companies and governmental health agencies to produce and distribute ethical vaccines that do not create problems of conscience for healthcare providers or those requiring vaccination. In response to the church's call for ethical alternatives in research and development of COVID vaccines, we present an approach for the measurement of Anti–SARS-CoV-2 Ig antibodies in blood plasma (COVID-19 Antibody test) that does not utilize any products produced in aborted fetal cell lines. The SARS-CoV-2 RBD protein used in this test was produced in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells and test performance for determination of SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion was equivalent to a commercially available COVID-19 antibody test that utilized RBD protein and other reagents produced in embryonic cell lines. Abstract

Reduction of the magnesium(II) diamide [Mg(TripNON)] (TripNON = 4,5-bis(2,4,6-triisopropylanilido)-2,7-diethyl-9,9-dimethyl-xanthene) with 5% w/w K/KI leads to a good yield of a dianionic dimagnesium(I) species, as its potassium salt, [{K(TripNON)Mg}2]. An X-ray crystallographic analysis shows the molecule to contain a very long Mg–Mg bond (3.137(2) Å). The formation of [{K(TripNON)Mg}2] contrasts with a previously reported reduction of a magnesium(II) complex incorporating a bulkier diamide ligand, which instead afforded a magnesium–dinitrogen complex. In the current study, [{K(TripNON)Mg}2] has been shown to be a viable reagent for the reductive activation of CO, H2 and N2O. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A simple sequential addition protocol for the reductive coupling of ketones and aldehydes by a potassium aluminyl grants access to unsymmetrical pinacolate derivatives. Isolation of an aluminium ketyl complex presents evidence for the accessibility of radical species. Product release from the aluminium centre was achieved using an iodosilane, forming the disilylated 1,2‐diol and a neutral aluminium iodide, thereby demonstrating the steps required to generate a closed synthetic cycle for pinacol (cross) coupling at an aluminyl anion.
