We systematically study the intersection flatness and Ohm-Rush properties for modules over a commutative ring, drawing inspiration from the work of Ohm and Rush and of Hochster and Jeffries. We then use our newfound understanding of these properties to deduce consequences for the Frobenius map. We establish new structural results for modules that are intersection flat/Ohm-Rush by exhibiting intimate connections between these notions and the seminal work of Raynaud and Gruson on Mittag-Leffler modules. In particular, we develop a theory of Ohm-Rush modules that is parallel to the theory of Mittag-Leffler modules. Our motivation for doing so is that the Ohm-Rush condition is weaker than intersection flatness, and it will be shown in future work that one only needs the Ohm-Rush property of Frobenius on an excellent regular ring to prove the existence of test elements for homomorphic images of the ring. We also obtain descent and local-to-global results for intersection flat/Ohm-Rush modules. Our investigations reveal a pleasing picture for flat modules over a complete local ring, in which case many otherwise distinct properties coincide. Using these results, we characterize when a regular local ring has intersection flat Frobenius in terms of a purity condition on the relative Frobenius of the completion map, we provide a new characterization of excellence for DVRs in prime characteristic, we prove new cases of intersection flatness of Frobenius, we prove descent and ascent results for intersection flatness and Ohm-Rush properties for Frobenius, and we show that proving the existence of test elements for homomorphic images of excellent regular rings reduces to exhibiting openness of pure loci for certain simple module maps. We study this openness of loci problem in a special case and show that the Frobenius of any excellent regular ring of prime characteristic is close to being Ohm-Rush., Comments welcome!

The notion of an \emph{Egyptian} integral domain $D$ (where every fraction can be written as a sum of unit fractions with denominators from $D$) is extended here to the notion that a ring $R$ is \emph{$W$-Egyptian}, with $W$ a multiplicative set in $R$. The new notion allows denominators just from $W$. It is shown that several results about Egyptian domains can be extended to the $W$-Egyptian context, though some cannot, as shown in counterexamples. In particular, being a sum of unit fractions from $W$ is \emph{not} equivalent to being a distinct sum of unit fractions from $W$, so we need to add the notion of the \emph{strictly} $W$-Egyptian ring. The notion of an Egyptian domain (where the analogue of Egyptian fractions works appropriately), first explored by Guerrieri-Loper-Oman, is extended to the more general notions of generically and locally Egyptian domains. Results from the previous paper are extended, as well as reinterpreted in the new expanded context. It is shown that localizations of polynomial rings are typically Egyptian, that positive semigroup-graded domains are not Egyptian, and that affine semigroup rings are not Egyptian unless the semigroup is a group. However, any finitely generated algebra over a field or $\mathbb Z$ is shown to be locally Egyptian. It is further shown that if $R$ is a pullback of $S$, then $R$ is Egyptian if and only if $S$ is., 10 pages. Comments welcome!

In this article we first compare the set of elements in the socle of an ideal of a polynomial algebra $K[x_1,\ldots,x_d]$ over a field $K$ that are not in the ideal itself and Macaulay's inverse systems of such polynomial algebras in a purely combinatorial way for monomial ideals, and then develop some closure operational properties for the related poset ${{\nats}_0^d}$. We then derive some algebraic propositions of $\Gamma$-graded rings that then have some combinatorial consequences. Interestingly, some of the results from this part that uniformly hold for polynomial rings are always false when the ring is local. We finally delve into some direct computations, w.r.t.~a given term order of the monomials, for general zero-dimensional Gorenstein ideals and deduce a few explicit observations and results for the inverse systems from some recent results about socles., Comment: 32 pages

One says that a ring homomorphism $R \rightarrow S$ is Ohm-Rush if extension commutes with arbitrary intersection of ideals, or equivalently if for any element $f\in S$, there is a unique smallest ideal of $R$ whose extension to $S$ contains $f$, called the content of $f$. For Noetherian local rings, we analyze whether the completion map is Ohm-Rush. We show that the answer is typically `yes' in dimension one, but `no' in higher dimension, and in any case it coincides with the content map having good algebraic properties. We then analyze the question of when the Ohm-Rush property globalizes in faithfully flat modules and algebras over a 1-dimensional Noetherian domain, culminating both in a positive result and a counterexample. Among reduced Noetherian prime characteristic commutative rings, we prove that a regular ring is precisely one where finite intersection of ideals commutes with taking bracket powers. The notion of an Ohm-Rush algebra, and its associated content map, has connections with prime characteristic algebra, polynomial extensions, and the Ananyan-Hochster proof of Stillman's conjecture. As further restrictions are placed (creating the increasingly more specialized notions of weak content, semicontent, content, and Gaussian algebras), the construction becomes more powerful. Here we settle the question in the affirmative over a Noetherian ring from our previous article of whether a faithfully flat weak content algebra is semicontent (and over an Artinian ring of whether such an algebra is content), though both questions remain open in general. We show that in content algebra maps over Pr\"ufer domains, heights are preserved and a dimension formula is satisfied. We show that an inclusion of nontrivial valuation domains is a content algebra if and only if the induced map on value groups is an isomorphism, and that such a map induces a homeomorphism on prime spectra. In preparing the paper "Some extensions of Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity", we had occasion to perform an intricate set of computations pertaining to a single illustrative example. In the end, we have decided not to include the computations in the main paper, but instead to publish them here for later reference. Let $R$ be an excellent Noetherian ring of prime characteristic. Consider an arbitrary nested pair of ideals (or more generally, a nested pair of submodules of a fixed finite module). We do \emph{not} assume that their quotient has finite length. In this paper, we develop various sufficient numerical criteria for when the tight closures of these ideals (or submodules) match. For some of the criteria we only prove sufficiency, while some are shown to be equivalent to the tight closures matching. We compare the various numerical measures (in some cases demonstrating that the different measures give truly different numerical results) and explore special cases where equivalence with matching tight closure can be shown. The $*$-spread of an ideal is defined as the minimal number of generators of an ideal which is minimal with respect to having the same tight closure as the original ideal. We prove an asymptotic length formula for the $*$-spread.

Phantom depth, phantom nonzerodivisors, and phantom exact sequences are analogues of the non-"phantom" notions which have been useful in tackling the (very difficult) localization problem in tight closure theory. In the present paper, these notions are developed further and partially reworked. For instance, although no analogue of a long exact sequence arises from a short stably phantom exact sequence of complexes, we provide a method for recovering the kind of information obtainable from such a long sequence. Also, we give alternate characterizations of the notion of phantom depth, including one based on Koszul homology which we use to show that with very mild conditions on a finitely generated module $M$, any two maximal phantom $M$-regular sequences in an ideal $I$ have the same length. In order to do so, we prove a "Nakayama lemma for tight closure" which is of independent interest. We strengthen the connection of phantom depth with minheight, we explore several analogues of "associated prime" in tight closure theory, and we discuss a connection with the problem of when tight closure commutes with localization., 35 pages
