Monitoring of vibrational eigenmodes of an elastic body excited by gravitational waves was one of the first concepts proposed for the detection of gravitational waves. At laboratory scale, these experiments became known as resonant-bar detectors first developed by Joseph Weber in the 1960s. Due to the dimensions of these bars, the targeted signal frequencies were in the kHz range. Weber also pointed out that monitoring of vibrations of Earth or Moon could reveal gravitational waves in the mHz band. His Lunar Surface Gravimeter experiment deployed on the Moon by the Apollo 17 crew had a technical failure rendering the data useless. In this article, we revisit the idea and propose a Lunar Gravitational-Wave Antenna (LGWA). We find that LGWA could become an important partner observatory for joint observations with the space-borne, laser-interferometric detector LISA, and at the same time contribute an independent science case due to LGWA's unique features. Technical challenges need to be overcome for the deployment of the experiment, and development of inertial vibration sensor technology lays out a future path for this exciting detector concept., 29 pages, 17 figures

The performance of as-built optical instruments strongly depends on thermal and structural loads, since these boundary conditions can affect the geometry of optical surfaces. Variations of temperature influence the volume, and the shape, of the structure proportionally to the coefficient of thermal expansion of the material, while mechanical loads, like gravity, may induce deformations on the optical elements according to the set of applied constraints. Those effects can introduce aberrations that degrade the performance of the optical system. Since software for optical and thermo-structural analysis are usually different, a coupling methodology between these two fields of physics is needed. This is a step-by-step procedure through many platforms. In this work, the procedure devised and used by the authors will be presented. At first, a thermo-mechanical analysis (depending on the loads involved) has to be performed, in order to obtain the final deformed geometry of the optical structure; COMSOL Multiphysics is the finite element solver (FEM) used for these analyses. Then an output data file, containing the coordinates of points belonging to the optical surface, can be generated. The output data are elaborated by a MATLAB routine that allows to convert the set of points into an n-th polynomial expression that best fits the surface data. The fitted polynomial surface is hence imported in ZEMAX ray-tracing software to study the optical performances of the system and the effects of thermo-mechanical loads.

An approach for a Poincar\'e covariant description of nuclear structure and of lepton scattering off nuclei is proposed within the relativistic Hamiltonian dynamics in the light-front form. Indeed a high level of accuracy is needed for a comparison with the increasingly precise present and future experimental data at high momentum transfer. Therefore, to distinguish genuine QCD effects or effects of medium modified nucleon structure functions from conventional nuclear structure effects, the commutation rules between the Poincar\'e generators should be satisfied. For the first time in this paper a proper hadronic tensor for inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off nuclei is derived in the impulse approximation in terms of the single nucleon hadronic tensor. Our approach is based : i) on a light-front spectral function for nuclei, obtained taking advantage of the successful non-relativistic knowledge of nuclear interaction, and ii) on the free current operator that, if defined in the Breit reference frame with the momentum transfer, $\bf q$, parallel to the $z$ axis, fulfills Poincar\'e covariance and current conservation. Our results can be generalized : i) to exclusive processes or to semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes; ii) to the case where the final state interaction is considered through a Glauber approximation; iii) to finite momentum transfer kinematics. As a first test, the hadronic tensor is applied to obtain the nuclear structure function F$_2^A$ and to evaluate the EMC effect for $^3He$ in the Bjorken limit. Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large Survey (Ariel) has been adopted as ESA “Cosmic Vision” M4 mission, with launch scheduled for 2029. Ariel is based on a 1 m class telescope optimized for spectroscopy in the waveband between 1.95 and 7.8 μm, operating in cryogenic conditions in the range 40–50 K. Aluminum has been chosen as baseline material for the telescope mirrors substrate, with a metallic coating to enhance reflectivity and protect from oxidation and corrosion. As part of Phase B1, leading to SRR and eventually mission adoption, a protected silver coating with space heritage has been selected and will undergo a qualification process. A fundamental part of this process is assuring the integrity of the coating layer and performance compliance in terms of reflectivity at the telescope operating temperature. To this purpose, a set of flat sample disks have been cut and polished from the same baseline aluminum alloy as the telescope mirror substrates, and the selected protected silver coating has been applied to them by magnetron sputtering. The disks have then been subjected to a series of cryogenic temperature cycles to assess coating performance stability. This study presents the results of visual inspection, reflectivity measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM) on the sample disks before and after the cryogenic cycles.

In valence approximation the fermion correlator is simply related to the light-front spectral function. Then the leading twist time-reversal even transverse momentum distributions can be explicitly obtained from the light-front wave function of the system and the twist-three distributions are linear combinations of the transverse distributions at leading twist.

The ladder Bethe-Salpeter Equation of a bound (1/2)+ system, composed by a fermion and a scalar boson, is solved in Minkowski space, for the first time. The formal tools are the same already successfully adopted for two-scalar and two-fermion systems, namely the Nakanishi integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude and the light-front projection of the fulfilled equation. Numerical results are presented and discussed for two interaction kernels: i) a massive scalar exchange and ii) a massive vector exchange, illustrating both the correlation between binding energies and the interaction coupling constants, as well as the valence content of the interacting state, through the valence probabilities and the light-front momentum distributions. In the case of the scalar exchange, an interesting side effect, to be ascribed to the repulsion generated by the small components of the Dirac spinor, is pointed out, while for the vector exchange the manifestation of the helicity conservation opens new interesting questions to be addressed within a fully non-perturbative framework, as well as the onset of a scale-invariant regime., 38 pages, 6 figures. We study the emission of photons from germinating seeds using an experimental technique designed to detect photons of extremely small intensity when the signal/noise ratio is low. We analyze the dark count signal in the absence of germinating seeds as well as the photon emission during the germination process. The technique of analysis adopted here was originally designed to measure the temporal complexity of astrophysical, sociological and physiological processes. The foundation of this method, called Diffusion Entropy Analysis (DEA), rests on Kolmogorov complexity. The updated version of DEA used in this paper is designed to determine if the signal complexity is generated by either non-ergodic crucial events with a non-stationary correlation function or by the infinite memory of a stationary but non-integrable correlation function or by a mixture of both processes. We find that dark count yields the ordinary scaling, thereby showing that no complexity of either kinds may occur in the absence of any seeds in the chamber. In the presence of seeds in the chamber anomalous scaling emerges, reminiscent of that found in neuro-physiological processes. However, this is a mixture of both processes and with the progress of germination the non-ergodic component tends to vanish and complexity is dominated by the stationary infinite memory. We argue that this may be a sign of quantum coherence that according to some authors is the important ingredient of cognition.

International audience; The fundamental theory of the strong interaction-quantum chromodynamics (QCD)—provides the foundational framework with which to describe and understand the key properties of atomic nuclei. A deep understanding of the explicit role of quarks and gluons in nuclei remains elusive however, as these effects have thus far been well-disguised by confinement effects in QCD which are encapsulated by a successful description in terms of effective hadronic degrees of freedom. The observation of the EMC effect has provided an enduring indication for explicit QCD effects in nuclei, and points to the medium modification of the bound protons and neutrons in the nuclear medium. Understanding the EMC effect is a major challenge for modern nuclear physics, and several key questions remain, such as understanding its flavor, spin, and momentum dependence. This manuscript provides a contemporary snapshot of our understanding of the role of QCD in nuclei and outlines possible pathways in experiment and theory that will help deepen our understanding of nuclei in the context of QCD.

International audience; ARIEL (the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey) has been selected by ESA as the next medium-class science mission (M4), expected to be launched in 2028. The mission will be devoted to observing spectroscopically in the infrared a large population of warm and hot transiting exoplanets (temperatures from 500 K to 3000 K) in our nearby Galactic neighborhood, opening a new discovery space in the field of extrasolar planets and enabling the understanding of the physics and chemistry of these far away worlds. ARIEL was selected for implementation by ESA in March 2018 from three candidate missions that underwent parallel phase A studies. This paper gives an overview of the design at the end of phase A and discusses plans for its evolution during phase B1, in the run-up to mission adoption. ARIEL is based on a 1 m class telescope feeding two instruments: a moderate resolution spectrometer covering the wavelengths from 1.95 to 7.8 microns; and a three-channel photometer (which also acts as a fine guidance sensor) with bands between 0.5 and 1.2 microns combined with a low resolution spectrometer covering 1.25 to 1.9 microns. During its 3.5 years of operation from an L2 orbit, ARIEL will continuously observe exoplanets transiting their host star. This paper presents an overall view of the integrated design of the payload proposed for this mission. The design tightly integrates the various payload elements in order to allow the exacting photometric stability targets to be met, while providing simultaneous spectral and photometric data from the visible to the mid-infrared. We identify and discuss the key requirements and technical challenges for the payload and describe the trade-offs that were assessed during phase A, culminating in the baseline design for phase B1. We show how the design will be taken forward to produce a fully integrated and calibrated payload for ARIEL that can be built within the mission and programmatic constraints and will meet the challenging scientific performance required for transit spectroscopy.

The Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey (ARIEL) has been recently selected as the next ESA medium-class mission (M4) with a foreseen launch in 2028. During its 3.5 years of scientific operations, ARIEL will observe spectroscopically in the infrared (IR) a large population of known transiting planets in the neighbourhood of the Solar System. ARIEL aims to give a breakthrough in the observation of exoplanet atmospheres and understanding of the physics and chemistry of these far-away worlds. ARIEL is based on a 1-m class telescope feeding a collimated beam into two separate instrument modules: a spectrometer module covering the waveband between 1.95 μm and 7.80 μm; and a combined fine guidance system/visible photometer/NIR spectrometer. The primary payload is the spectrometer, whose scientific observations are supported by the fine guidance system and photometer, which is monitoring the photometric stability of the target and allowing, at the same time, the target to be properly pointed. The telescope configuration is a classic Cassegrain layout used with an eccentric pupil and coupled to a tertiary off-axis paraboloidal mirror; the design has been conceived to satisfy all the mission requirements, and it guarantees the requested “as-built” diffraction limited performance. To constrain the thermo-mechanically induced optical aberrations, the primary mirror (M1) temperature will be monitored and finely tuned using an active thermal control system based on thermistors and heaters. They will be switched on and off to maintain the M1 temperature within ±1 K by the Telescope Control Unit (TCU). The TCU is a payload electronics subsystem also responsible for the thermal control of the main spectrometer detectors as well as the secondary mirror (M2) mechanism and IR calibration source management. The TCU, being a slave subsystem of the Instrument Control Unit (ICU), will collect the housekeeping data from the monitored subsystems and will forward them to the master unit. The latter will run the application software, devoted to the main spectrometer management and to the scientific data on-board processing.

The Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanets Large-survey (ARIEL)1 Mission has been recently selected by ESA as the fourth medium-class Mission (M4) in the framework of the Cosmic Vision Program. The goal of ARIEL is to investigate, thanks to VIS photometry and IR spectroscopy, the atmospheres of several hundreds of planets orbiting nearby stars in order to address the fundamental questions on how planetary systems form and evolve.2 During its four-years mission, ARIEL will observe several hundreds of exoplanets ranging from Jupiter- and Neptune-size down to super-Earth and Earth-size with its 1 meter-class telescope.3 The analysis of spectra and photometric data will allow to extract the chemical fingerprints of gases and condensates in the planets atmospheres, including the elemental composition for the most favorable targets. It will also enable the study of thermal and scattering properties of the atmosphere as the planet orbits around its parent star.

Two promising directions beyond inclusive deep inelastic scattering experiments, aimed at unveiling the three dimensional structure of the bound nucleon, are reviewed, considering in particular the $^3$He nucleus. The 3D structure in coordinate space can be accessed through deep exclusive processes, whose non-perturbative part is encoded in generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In this way, the distribution of partons in the transverse plane can be obtained. As an example, coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off $^3$He nuclei, important to access the neutron GPDs, will be discussed. In Impulse Approximation (IA), the sum of two GPDs of $^3$He, $H$ and $E$, at low momentum transfer, turns out to be dominated by the neutron contribution. Besides, a technique, able to take into account the nuclear effects included in the Impulse Approximation analysis, has been developed. The spin dependent GPD $\tilde H$ of $^3$He is also found to be largely dominated, at low momentum transfer, by the neutron contribution. Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes access the momentum space 3D structure parameterized through transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. A distorted spin-dependent spectral function has been recently introduced for $^3$He, in a non-relativistic framework, to take care of the final state interaction between the observed pion and the remnant in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off transversely polarized $^3$He. The calculation of the Sivers and Collins single spin asymmetries for $^3$He, and a straightforward procedure to effectively take into account nuclear dynamics and final state interactions, will be reviewed. The Osservatorio Polifunzionale del Chianti is a new astronomical site located in the neighbourhoods of San Donato in Poggio (Firenze), on top of one of the highest hills of the Chianti area, among the darkest places in Tuscany, and it is managed by the University of Florence. The name takes origin from the different observatories that are hosted in the building. Beside the Astronomical Observatory, Geo-seismic, Meteorological and Environmental Observatories fully operate in a fruitful synergic collaboration among themselves. Presently, the main research activity at OPC concerns the observation and follow-up of transiting exoplanets while the team is involved in national and international collaborations, like TESS SG1 follow-up for the observation of exoplanet candidates and GAPS, which exploits several telescopes and facilities in Italy (Asiago, OAVdA) and Canary Islands (HARPS-North and GIANO instruments as well as their improved combined version) for exoplanetary characterization. OPC researchers perform their activity in the framework of collaborations with Osservatorio Astrofisico di Torino and Osservatorio Autonomo della Val d'Aosta. From July 2017, to date, commissioning observing runs have been done in order to test the telescope and mount capabilities, systematics and limits and to eventually improve the accuracy of the overall system. A software algorithm has been developed1 in order to estimate the accuracy of any transit observation, so that parameters like the integration time and telescope focus can be chosen to obtain a higher signal to noise ratio, and also to understand the observational limits of the instruments. Currently, the system is able to work within+/-1 mmag of accuracy and differential photometry error (refer to the error bars in Figure 6) so that exoplanet transits with (see abstract for symbol _5 mmag) of relative depth can be observed fruitfully. The OPC Research Team also aims at the observation of the optical/visible counterpart of gamma ray bursts afterglows, supernovae and GW ToO (Gravitational Waves events / Targets of Opportunity) follow-up along with transiting exoplanets follow-up. The reason is twofold. First of all, the scientific interest on these events of the researchers supporting OPC, and then the demand of the astronomical community for follow-up observations with small telescopes, around the 1-m class, since larger telescopes are often used for primary targets observations. To pursue the target of observing GRBs and the optical counterpart of GW events, it is planned to improve the main instrument accuracy and to develop a consolidated observation procedure, to be ready for the next LIGO-VIRGO O3 run scheduled for the Autumn, 2018.

We built a multi-channel led starlight simulator capable to reproduce the radiation of stars of F, G, K and M spectral types in the wavelength range 365-940 nm. This range overlaps the photosynthetic active interval allowing us to use the simulator for biological experiments under radiation and atmospheric conditions close as much as possible to those expected on extrasolar planets. The simulator is a laboratory tool which is part of the “Atmosphere in a Test Tube” project, aimed to study the photosynthetic efficiency of bacteria under alien environmental conditions and their possible impact on the atmosphere of the host planet. This paper describes the software developed to control the simulator. We begin by presenting a conceptual overview of the instruments and then illustrating the top-level requirements and the architecture of the control software. Finally, we give a description of the graphical user interface.

The ARIEL optical design is conceived as a fore-module common afocal telescope that will feed the spectrometer and photometric channels. The telescope optical design is based on an eccentric pupil two-mirror classic Cassegrain configuration coupled to a tertiary paraboloidal mirror. An all-aluminum structure has been considered for the telescope layout, and a detailed tolerance analysis has been conducted to assess the telescope feasibility. This analysis has been done including the different parts of the realization and life of the instrument, from integration on-ground to in-flight stability during the scientific acquisitions. The primary mirror (M1) temperature will be monitored and finely tuned via an active thermal control system based on thermistors and heaters. The heaters will be switched on and off to maintain the M1 temperature within ±1K thanks to a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller.

The telescope optical design is composed of an off-axis portion of a two-mirror classic Cassegrain coupled to a tertiary off-axis paraboloidal mirror. The telescope and optical bench operating temperatures, as well as those of some subsystems, will be monitored and fine tuned/stabilised mainly by means of a thermal control subsystem (TCU-Telescope Control Unit) working in closed-loop feedback and hosted by the main Payload electronics unit, the Instrument Control Unit (ICU). Another important function of the TCU will be to monitor the telescope and optical bench thermistors when the Payload decontamination heaters will be switched on (when operating the instrument in Decontamination Mode) during the Commissioning Phase and cyclically, if required. Then the thermistors data will be sent by the ICU to the On Board Computer by means of a proper formatted telemetry. The latter (OBC) will be in charge of switching on and off the decontamination heaters on the basis of the thermistors readout values.

TCU will collect the housekeeping data of the controlled subsystems and will forward them to the spacecraft (S/C) by means of the Instrument Control Unit (ICU), the main Payload's electronic Unit linked to the S/C On Board Computer (OBC).

Poincar\'e covariant definitions for the spin-dependent spectral function and for the momentum distributions within the light-front Hamiltonian dynamics are proposed for a three-fermion bound system, starting from the light-front wave function of the system. The adopted approach is based on the Bakamjian--Thomas construction of the Poincar\'e generators, which allows one to easily import the familiar and wide knowledge on the nuclear interaction into a light-front framework. The proposed formalism can find useful applications in refined nuclear calculations, such as those needed for evaluating the European Muon Collaboration effect or the semi-inclusive deep inelastic cross sections with polarized nuclear targets, since remarkably the light-front unpolarized momentum distribution by definition fulfills both normalization and momentum sum rules. Also shown is a straightforward generalization of the definition of the light-front spectral function to an $A$-nucleon system.

The exoplanet revolution is well underway. The last decade has seen order-of-magnitude increases in the number of known planets beyond the Solar system. Detailed characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres provide the best means for distinguishing the makeup of their outer layers, and the only hope for understanding the interplay between initial composition chemistry, temperature-pressure atmospheric profiles, dynamics and circulation. While pioneering work on the observational side has produced the first important detections of atmospheric molecules for the class of transiting exoplanets, important limitations are still present due to the lack of systematic, repeated measurements with optimized instrumentation at both visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. It is thus of fundamental importance to explore quantitatively possible avenues for improvements. In this paper we report initial results of a feasibility study for the prototype of a versatile multi-band imaging system for very high-precision differential photometry that exploits the choice of specifically selected narrow-band filters and novel ideas for the execution of simultaneous VIS and NIR measurements. Starting from the fundamental system requirements driven by the science case at hand, we describe a set of three opto-mechanical solutions for the instrument prototype: 1) a radial distribution of the optical flux using dichroic filters for the wavelength separation and narrow-band filters or liquid crystal filters for the observations; 2) a tree distribution of the optical flux (implying 2 separate foci), with the same technique used for the beam separation and filtering; 3) an 'exotic' solution consisting of the study of a complete optical system (i.e. a brand new telescope) that exploits the chromatic errors of a reflecting surface for directing the different wavelengths at different foci. In this paper we present the first results of the study phase for the three solutions, as well as the results of two laboratory prototypes (related to the first two options), that simulate the most critical aspects of the future instrument.

International audience; The Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey (ARIEL) is one of the three candidate missions selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) for its next medium-class science mission due for launch in 2026. The goal of the ARIEL mission is to investigate the atmospheres of several hundred planets orbiting distant stars in order to address the fundamental questions on how planetary systems form and evolve. During its four (with a potential extension to six) years mission ARIEL will observe 500+ exoplanets in the visible and the infrared with its meter-class telescope in L2. ARIEL targets will include gaseous and rocky planets down to the Earth-size around different types of stars. The main focus of the mission will be on hot and warm planets orbiting close to their star, as they represent a natural laboratory in which to study the chemistry and formation of exoplanets. The ARIEL mission concept has been developed by a consortium of more than 50 institutes from 12 countries, which include UK, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Ireland and Portugal. The analysis of the ARIEL spectra and photometric data in the 0.5-7.8 micron range will allow to extract the chemical fingerprints of gases and condensates in the planets' atmospheres, including the elemental composition for the most favorable targets. It will also enable the study of thermal and scattering properties of the atmosphere as the planet orbit around the star. ARIEL will have an open data policy, enabling rapid access by the general community to the high-quality exoplanet spectra that the core survey will deliver.

We extend the investigation of the Generalized Parton Distribution for a charged pion within a fully covariant constituent quark model, in two respects: (i) calculating the tensor distribution and (ii) adding the treatment of the evolution, needed for achieving a meaningful comparison with both the experimental parton distribution and the lattice evaluation of the so-called generalized form factors. Distinct features of our phenomenological covariant quark model are: (i) a 4D Ansatz for the pion Bethe-Salpeter amplitude, to be used in the Mandelstam formula for matrix elements of the relevant current operators, and (ii) only two parameters, namely a quark mass assumed to hold $m_q=~220$ MeV and a free parameter fixed through the value of the pion decay constant. The possibility of increasing the dynamical content of our covariant constituent quark model is briefly discussed in the context of the Nakanishi integral representation of the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude., Pages 20, figure 11 and table 8. The ARIEL mission has been proposed to ESA by an European Consortium as the first space mission to extensively perform remote sensing on the atmospheres of a well defined set of warm and hot transiting gas giant exoplanets, whose temperature range between ~600 K and 3000 K. ARIEL will observe a large number (~500) of warm and hot transiting gas giants, Neptunes and super-Earths around a range of host star types using transit spectroscopy in the ~2-8 μm spectral range and broad-band photometry in the NIR and optical. ARIEL will target planets hotter than 600 K to take advantage of their well-mixed atmospheres, which should show minimal condensation and sequestration of high-Z materials and thus reveal their bulk and elemental composition. One of the major motivations for exoplanet characterisation is to understand the probability of occurrence of habitable worlds, i.e. suitable for surface liquid water. While ARIEL will not study habitable planets, its major contribution to this topic will results from its capability to detect the presence of atmospheres on many terrestrial planets outside the habitable zone and, in many cases, characterise them. This represents a fundamental breakthrough in understanding the physical and chemical processes of a large sample of exoplanets atmospheres as well as their bulk properties and to probe in-space technology. The ARIEL infrared spectrometer (AIRS) provides data on the atmospheric composition; these data are acquired and processed by an On-Board Data Handling (OBDH) system including the Cold Front End Electronics (CFEE) and the Instrument Control Unit (ICU). The Telescope Control Unit (TCU) is also included inside the ICU. The latter is directly connected to the Control and Data Management Unit (CDMU) on board the Service Module (SVM). The general hardware architecture and the application software of the ICU are described. The Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) electronics and the Cooler Control Electronics are also presented.

PLATO 2.0 has been selected by ESA as the third medium-class Mission (M3) of the Cosmic Vision Program. Its Payload is conceived for the discovery of new transiting exoplanets on the disk of their parent stars and for the study of planetary system formation and evolution as well as to answer fundamental questions concerning the existence of other planetary systems like our own, including the presence of potentially habitable new worlds. The PLATO Payload design is based on the adoption of four sets of short focal length telescopes having a large field of view in order to exploit a large sky coverage and to reach, at the same time, the needed photometry accuracy and signalto- noise ratio (S/N) within a few tens of seconds of exposure time. The large amount of data produced by the telescope is collected and processed by means of the Payload’s Data Processing System (DPS) composed by many processing electronics units. This paper gives an overview of the PLATO 2.0 DPS, mainly focusing on the architecture and processing capabilities of its Instrument Control Unit (ICU), the electronic subsystem acting as the main interface between the Payload (P/L) and the Spacecraft (S/C).

ARIEL (the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey) is one of the three candidates for the next ESA medium-class science mission (M4) expected to be launched in 2026. This mission will be devoted to observing spectroscopically in the infrared a large population of warm and hot transiting exoplanets (temperatures from ~500 K to ~3000 K) in our nearby Galactic neighborhood, opening a new discovery space in the field of extrasolar planets and enabling the understanding of the physics and chemistry of these far away worlds. The three candidate missions for M4 are now in a Phase A study which will run until mid-2017 at which point one mission will be selected for implementation. ARIEL is based on a 1-m class telescope feeding both a moderate resolution spectrometer covering the wavelengths from 1.95 to 7.8 microns, and a four channel photometer (which also acts as a Fine Guidance Sensor) with bands between 0.55 and 1.65 microns. During its 3.5 years of operation from an L2 orbit, ARIEL will continuously observe exoplanets transiting their host star.

A simple, but fully-covariant model for describing neutral Vector Mesons, in both light and heavy sectors, is briefly illustrated. The main ingredients of our relativistic constituent model are i) an Ansatz for the Bethe-Salpeter vertex for Vector Mesons, and ii) a Mandelstam-like formula for the electromagnetic decay widths. The free parameters of our approach are fixed through a comparison with the valence transverse-momentum distribution, $n(k_\perp)$, obtained within phenomenological Light-Front Hamiltonian Dynamics models reproducing the mass spectra. Preliminary results for the transverse-momentum distributions, the parton distribution and the electromagnetic decay constants are shown., 6 pages, 4 figures. We present a preliminary calculation of the electromagnetic form factors of $^3$He and $^3$H, performed within the Light-Front Hamiltonian Dynamics. EChO is a three-modules (VNIR, SWIR, MWIR), highly integrated spectrometer, covering the wavelength range from 0.55 $\mu$m, to 11.0 $\mu$m. The baseline design includes the goal wavelength extension to 0.4 $\mu$m while an optional LWIR module extends the range to the goal wavelength of 16.0 $\mu$m. An Instrument Control Unit (ICU) is foreseen as the main electronic subsystem interfacing the spacecraft and collecting data from all the payload spectrometers modules. ICU is in charge of two main tasks: the overall payload control (Instrument Control Function) and the housekeepings and scientific data digital processing (Data Processing Function), including the lossless compression prior to store the science data to the Solid State Mass Memory of the Spacecraft. A simple compact temperature sensor and microheater in a wide temperature range has been developed, realizing a laser-patterned resistive structure on the surface of a synthetic polycrystalline diamond plate. Imaging and spectroscopy techniques used to investigate morphology, structure, and composition of the pattern showed that it incorporates different nondiamond carbon phases. Transport experiments revealed the semiconducting behavior of this microresistor. Thermal power measurements versus temperature are presented. A possible application of this device that may easily match compact experimental layouts avoiding both thermal anchoring offset and mechanical stress between sample and sensor is discussed. The patterned structure undergoes testing as a microthermometer, providing fast response and excellent stability versus time. It exhibits a good sensitivity that coupled to an easy calibration procedure minimizes errors and guarantees high accuracy. Plot of temperature versus input power of the resistive patterned line used as microheater shows a linear behavior in an extended temperature range.

The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory (EChO) is a space mission dedicated to investigate exoplanetary atmospheres by undertaking spectroscopy of transiting planets in a wide spectral region from the visible to the mid-InfraRed (IR). The high sensitivity and the long exposures required by the mission need an extremely stable thermo-mechanical platform. The instrument is passively cooled down to approximately 40 K, together with the telescope assembly, by a V-Groove based design that exploits the L2 orbit favourable thermal conditions. The visible and short-IR wavelength detectors are maintained at the operating temperature of 40 K by a dedicated radiator coupled to the cold space. The mid-IR channels, require a lower operating temperature and are cooled by an active refrigerator: a 28 K Neon Joule-Thomson (JT) cold end, fed by a mechanical compressor. Temperature stability is one of the challenging issues of the whole architecture: periodical perturbations must be controlled before they reach the sensitive units of the instrument. An efficient thermal control system is required: the design is based on a combination of passive and active solutions. In this paper we describe the thermal architecture of the payload with the main cryo-chain stages and their temperature control systems. The requirements that drive the design and the trade-offs needed to enable the EChO exciting science in a technically feasible payload design are discussed. Thermal modelling results and preliminary performance predictions in terms of steady state and transient conditions are also reported. This paper is presented on behalf of the EChO Consortium.

We present an improved description of the semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3 He, providing information on the neutron single spin asymmetries. The analysis at finite momentum transfers in a Poincare covariant framework is outlined and a quantitative estimate of the nuclear effects is presented.

Space missions, as EChO, or ground based experiments, as SPHERE, have been proposed to measure the atmospheric transmission, reflection and emission spectra. In particular, EChO is foreseen to probe exoplanetary atmospheres over a wavelength range from 0.4 to 16 micron by measuring the combined spectra of the star, its transmission through the planet atmosphere and the emission of the planet. The planet atmosphere characteristics and possible biosignatures will be inferred by studying such composite spectrum in order to identify the emission/absorption lines/bands from atmospheric molecules such as water (H2O), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3) etc. The interpretation of the future EChO observations depends upon the understanding of how the planet atmosphere affects the stellar spectrum and how this last affects the planet emission/absorption. In particular, it is important to know in detail the optical characteristics of gases in the typical physical conditions of the planetary atmospheres and how those characteristics could be affected by radiation induced phenomena such as photochemical and biological one. Insights in this direction can be achieved from laboratory studies of simulated planetary atmosphere of different pressure and temperature conditions under the effects of radiation sources, used as proxies of different bands of the stellar emission.

The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory (EChO) mission was one of the proposed candidates for the European Space Agency’s third medium mission within the Cosmic Vision Framework. EChO was designed to observe the spectra from transiting exoplanets in the 0.55-11 micron band with a goal of covering from 0.4 to 16 microns. The mission and its associated scientific instrument has now undergone a rigorous technical evaluation phase and we report here on the outcome of that study phase, update the design status and review the expected performance of the integrated payload and satellite.

An overview of the vector and tensor Generalized Parton Distributions for a charged pion is presented. Such observables, belonging to the set of quantities fundamental for a detailed investigation of the hadronic inner dynamics, have been evaluated within a fully covariant Constituent Quark Model, based on a proper Ansatz of the pion Bethe-Salpeter Amplitude and the Mandelstam formula for matrix elements of operators acting on relativistic composite systems. Given the very encouraging results already obtained for the vector distribution of a charged pion, the model has been extended to the tensor one, and some preliminary calculations will be illustrated., Comment: 12 pages and 3 figures. A new era of laser based plasma accelerators is emerging following the commissioning of many high power laser facilities around the world. Extremely short (tens of fs) laser pulses with energy of multi-joules level are available at these newly built facilities. Here we describe the new 220 TW FLAME facility. In particular we discuss the laser system general layout, the main measurements on the laser pulse parameters, the underground target area. Finally we give an overview of the first results of the Self-Injection Test Experiment (SITE), obtained at a low laser energy. This initial low laser energy experimental campaign was necessary for the validation of the radio-protection shielding (Esposito, 2011 [1]) we discuss here. With respect to our preliminary configuration, with a pulse duration of 30 fs and a focusing optic of F/15, we discuss here the minimum laser energy requirements for electron acceleration and the forward transmitted optical radiation. International audience; Diamond is a promising material for the production of semitransparent in situ photon beam monitors which can withstand the high dose rates occurring in new generation synchrotron radiation storage rings and in free electron lasers. We report on the development of a 500 mu m thick freestanding, single crystal chemical vapor deposited diamond detector with segmented electrodes. Performances in both low and radio frequency beam monitoring are presented as well. By using charge integration techniques at a frame rate of 6.5 kHz in combination with a needle synchrotron radiation beam and mesh scans, the inhomogeneity of the sensor was found to be of the order of 2%; with a measured electronics noise of 2 pA / root Hz a 0.05% relative precision in the intensity measurements (at 1 mu A) and a 0.1 mu m resolution in the position encoding have been estimated. Moreover, the high electron-hole mobility of diamond compared with other active materials enables very fast charge collection characterized by rise-times below 1 ns; this allowed us to utilize single pulse integration to simultaneously detect the intensity and the position of each synchrotron radiation photon bunch generated by a bending magnet

A new facility named SPARC-LAB has been recently launched at the INFN National Laboratories in Frascati, merging the potentialities of the former projects SPARC and PLASMONX. In this paper we report about the BIOKIS payload: a multidisciplinary set of experiments and measurements in the fields of Biology (4) and Dosimetry (3) performed in microgravity. BIOKIS took advantage of the last STS-134 Endeavour mission and engineering state of the art in Space Life Science. The BIOKIS payload is compact, efficient, and capable to host experiments with different samples and science disciplines. Moreover, the time overlap of biological experiments and dosimetry measurements will produce more insightful information.

Peak current represents a key demand for new generation electron beam photoinjectors. Many beam applications, such as free electron laser, inverse Compton scattering, terahertz radiation generation, have efficiencies strongly dependent on the bunch length and current. A method of beam longitudinal compression (called velocity bunching) has been proposed some years ago, based on beam longitudinal phase space rotation in a rf field potential. The control of such rotation can lead to a compression factor in excess of 10, depending on the initial longitudinal emittance. Code simulations have shown the possibility to fully compensate the transverse emittance growth during rf compression, and this regime has been experimentally proven recently at SPARC. The key point is the control of transverse beam plasma oscillations, in order to freeze the emittance at its lowest value at the end of compression. Longitudinal and transverse phase space distortions have been observed during the experiments, leading to asymmetric current profiles and higher final projected emittances. In this paper we discuss in detail the results obtained at SPARC in the regime of velocity bunching, analyzing such nonlinearities and identifying the causes. The beam degradation is discussed, both for slice and projected parameters. Analytical tools are derived to experimentally quantify the effect of such distortions on the projected emittance.

PRESS-MAG-O is a new instrument under commission at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) designed to investigate materials under extreme conditions. The instrument, once completed, will allow combining high harmonic AC magnetic susceptibility measurements and magneto-optic experiments on samples under high pressures (HP), with a variable DC magnetic field in a wide temperature range. The system is designed to work at SINBAD, the IR synchrotron radiation beamline operational since 2001 at DA phi NE (Double Annular phi-factory for Nice Experiments), the storage ring of the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of the INFN. HP will be applied up to about 20GPa to samples inside a Cu-Be diamond anvil cell designed to allow concurrent FTIR experiments and high harmonic AC susceptibility measurements in a DC magnetic field up to 8T and in a wide temperature range.
