ABSTRACT Shading meshes are important techniques used during seedling cultivation. However, improper use can lead to excessive shading, which may be intensified by the distribution of seedlings in the tray, directly affecting their growth and development. This study aimed to assess the effect of using colored shading meshes combined with different plant densities on the leaf anatomy and seedling quality of Corymbia citriodora (Hook.) K.D. Hill and L.A.S. Johnson. The experiment was conducted in a protected environment at the Federal University of Santa Maria Frederico Westphalen campus, from May to September 2018. A completely randomized experimental design was used, in a 2 x 3 factorial scheme with two seedling densities, two shading meshes, and no mesh. The assessed densities consisted of 736 seedlings per m2 (high density) and 528 seedlings per m2 (medium density). The shading meshes used were in the red and blue colors, and there was a meshless (full sun) treatment as well. Assessments were conducted when seedlings reached 25 cm in height, with the following variables being analyzed: stomatal count, cuticle thickness, adaxial and abaxial epidermis thickness, spongy and palisade parenchyma thickness, as well as seedling quality through the Dickson Quality Index. The use of meshes in different colors and the plant densities altered the anatomical characteristics of Corymbia citriodora, such as cuticle and adaxial epidermis thickness, abaxial epidermis, palisade parenchyma, and leaf thickness. However, these anatomical changes observed in seedlings under different meshes do not necessarily indicate better seedling quality.

ABSTRACT When the premise is the best final use of wood, evaluation of anatomical variables is recommended, bearing in mind that they are correlated with the properties of this material. The present study aimed to evaluate the correlation between anatomy and the physical properties of wood from Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan, Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub., Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill × Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake (hybrid) and Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake, from an agroforestry system. For this purpose, five trees of each species, aged 9 years old, were selected, and samples were collected from the diameter at 1.30 m height from the ground for analysis of the anatomical characteristics and physical properties of the wood. Anatomical variables, with the exception of fiber length and cell wall thickness, correlated with the physical properties of wood and influenced their values. The higher the cell wall fraction (0.79), vessel frequency (0.44) and ray frequency (0.92), the greater the basic density of the wood. The greater the fiber diameter (0.94), lumen diameter (0.88), vessel diameter (0.88), ray height (0.86) and ray width (0.84), the higher the moisture content of the wood.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar as dimensões das fibras de Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden em diferentes estratos e posição radial. A dissociação do tecido lenhoso foi realizada pelo método de peróxido de hidrogênio e ácido acético. Houve acréscimo no sentido medula-casca para todos os parâmetros anatômicos estudados, sendo que as árvores do extrato dominante apresentaram médias maiores e as centrais, valores inferiores. As dimensões dos caracteres anatômicos sentido medula-casca apresentaram variações, mas as árvores dos diferentes estratos não apresentaram distinções nítidas dos parâmetros de dimensões das fibras avaliados.

ABSTRACT: Wood is an organic material and its energetic and physical properties are related to its chemical and anatomical constituents. This study evaluated the influence of the chemical constituents on the energetic and physical properties of Parapiptadeniarigida(Benth.) Brenan, Peltophorumdubium(Spreng.) Taub.,Eucalyptus grandisW. Hill × Eucalyptus urophyllaS.T. Blake (hybrid), and Schizolobiumparahyba(Vell.) Blake an agroforestry system. Five trees of each species aged 9 years were sampled. Samples were collected at a diameter at breast height (DBH) of 1.30 m above the ground and were used to analyze the chemical, energetic, and physical properties of the wood. Chemical properties influence the energetic and physical properties of wood. We reported that the higher the lignin content in the wood, the greater the correlation with the fixed carbon content (0.76) and gross calorific value (0.65). High values of fixed carbon content increased the basic density of the wood (0.80). In contrast, the lower the lignin content in the wood, the greater the correlation with the extractive content (-0.76) and volatile material content (-0.74), and the higher the volatile material content, the lower the fixed carbon content (-0.98) and gross calorific value (-0.74).

ABSTRACT The cultivation of native and exotic species intercropped in an agroforestry system raises the interest for information on the properties of wood. Therefore, different methods are being tested to improve the technological properties of this material, including drying, which causes changes in the physical and mechanical properties of the wood. The present study investigated the influence of drying on the physical and mechanical properties of wood from tree species grown in an agroforestry system. Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth.) Brenan, Peltophorum dubium (Spreng.) Taub., Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill × Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake (hybrid), and Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) S.F.Blake were the species selected for the study. Three 9-year-old individuals of each of the species were obtained from an agroforestry system. Thirty wood samples (2.5 × 2.5 × 41 cm) were extracted from each species. The wood samples were divided between temperature treatments; 6 samples were used for each heat treatment (control, 120, 150, 180, and 210 °C), which were then dried for two hours in an oven (with forced air circulation). Following the heat treatment, the mechanical properties of wood samples were evaluated to determine the modulus of elasticity and rupture, the tension in the proportional limit, and maximum force according to the ASTM D-143-94 (2000) standard. Finally, the physical properties of the retractability of the wood samples were evaluated according to the NBR 7190 (ABNT, 1997) standard. Specimens used to analyze this variable came from sections of the wood (sample dimensions: 2.5 × 2.5 × 5 cm) not affected by the static bending test. Our findings indicate that, for all species investigated in this study, drying alters the physical and mechanical properties of the wood, with the most significant changes occurring at temperatures between 120 and 180 °C.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o incremento inicial da altura e o diâmetro do colo das espécies Acacia mearnsii De Willd, Eucalyptus grandis Hill, Mimosa scabrella Benth e Ateleia glazioviana Baill nos espaçamentos de 2 x 1m, 2 x 1,5m; 3 x1m e 3 x 1,5m com vistas à produção de madeira para fns energétcos em plantos de curta rotação. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos completos casualizados em esquema fatorial de 4 x 4. As avaliações foram realizadas nos períodos 0,60 e 120 dias após o planto das mudas no campo. Nos períodos iniciais ocorreu interferência do espaçamento no diâmetro de colo para A. mearnsii e na altura para E. grandis. O crescimento inicial em altura das espécies M. scabrella (122,1cm) e E. grandis (97,2cm) foram superiores a A. mearnsii (70,9cm) e A. glazioviana (26,7cm) após 120 dias do planto das mudas no campo.

Abstract The appropriate choice of tree species and planting arrangement for use in agroforestry systems is very important in order to maximize productivity and sustainability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth of five tree species and its effect on sugarcane yields in different planting arrays in agroforestry systems. The study was conducted from 2007 to 2011 in the city of Frederico Westphalen, RS, Brazil. The five studied tree species were: guapuruvu (Schizolobium parahybae), bracatinga (Mimosa scabrella), canafístula (Peltophorum dubium), angico-vermelho (Parapiptadenia rigida) and eucalypt (Eucalyptus urophylla S.T. Blake x Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden). Root collar diameter, diameter at breast height, plant height and mean diameter of crown were evaluated for four years with an interval of 90 days between assessments. Yield data for sugarcane were collected in June 2009, 2010, and 2011. Eucalypt presented the greatest root collar diameter values, diameter at breast height, crown development, and plant height. Angico-vermelho, canafístula and eucalypt presented a higher growth in the strip system, while guapuruvu presented the greater growth in the line system. Bracatinga was not influenced by an arrangement in the agroforestry systems. Sugarcane presented greater production in the understory of angico and bracatinga.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo determinar a flexão estática e a massa específica aparente da madeira de Inga marginata em diferentes condições de umidade. Foram abatidos três indivíduos com, aproximadamente, seis anos de idade. Para a determinação das propriedades estudadas foram seguidas as recomendações da norma ASTM D143-94. Observou-se redução superior a 1,2 vezes do módulo de elasticidade, módulo de ruptura, tensão no limite proporcional e força máxima na flexão estática em função da saturação das fibras. De maneira geral, as amostras apresentaram valores de massa específica aparente menores e maior resistência mecânica conforme a dessorção até a umidade de equilíbrio de 12%, sendo a madeira, nessa condição, classificada como moderadamente pesada.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to determine the effect of age and plant spacing on biomass production of four forestry tree species: Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth, and Ateleia glazioviana Baill. The following spacings of plants at the ages of 1, 3, and 5 years after planting were considered: 2.0 × 1.0 m, 2.0 × 1.5 m, 3.0 × 1.0 m, and 3.0 × 1.5 m. The study was installed in randomized complete block design. Biomass was determined by weighing different components of the trees after harvesting. Plant spacing affected biomass production of forestry trees at different ages after planting. Dense spacings produced larger quantities of biomass than less dense spacing. The tree species differed in biomass production: Eucalyptus grandis produced the largest quantity (325.1 t ha-1), followed by Acacia mearnsii (239.3 t ha-1), Mimosa scabrella (53.4 t ha-1), and Ateleia glazioviana (32.1 t ha-1). Wood biomass represented the biomass component with the largest production over time, which showed an increasing proportion throughout the age groups, followed branch, leaf, and bark biomass.

Abstract Soybean (Glycine max L.) monocropping have had a great socio-economic and environmental impact on the world and agroforestry systems has been considered an alternative for more sustainable production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different arrangements of agroforestry systems of the species E. urophylla x E. grandis and P. dubium and the pruning of the trees on the dynamics of solar radiation and soybean yield. A field experiment was conducted in Southern Brazil. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the solar radiation transmissivity and the productive performance of the soybean were evaluated. In this study, the soybean yield was determined by the arrangement of the agroforestry system and forest species utilized. The soybean crop cultivated in the understory of the P. dubium trees showed the highest yield response. The use of silvicultural practices for the management of forest species should be considered to generate the balance of the productive system. In this context, tree pruning is a viable side for agroforestry systems, as it promotes an increase in the incidence of solar radiation in the understory, resulting in an increase in soybean yield, especially when integrated with P. dubium.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of growth reducer and nitrogen fertilization on morphological variables, SPAD index, radiation interception, and grain yield of three cultivars of wheat. The experimental design was a randomized block in factorial scheme 3x5x2, with three cultivars (Mestre, Iguaçú and Itaipú), five nitrogen doses (0, 40, 80, 120, 160 Kg ha-1), and application or no application of a growth reducer, with three replications. The following characteristics were evaluated: plant height, SPAD index, leaf area index (LAI), Global Radiation Interception (GRI) and grain yield. The Tukey test (p < 0.05) was used for the comparison between the means of cultivar and growth reducer factors, and for a regression analysis to evaluate N levels. Increasing the dose of nitrogen promotes an increase in LAI of plants of wheat crops differently among cultivars, which leads to a greater degree of global radiation interception. At doses higher or equal to 120 Kg ha-1 of nitrogen, there are significant differences in grain yield between treatments with and without the application of the growth reducer. The significant interaction between growth reducer and nitrogen dose, showed that applications of growth reducer increase the GRI at doses above and below 80 Kg ha-1 of nitrogen. Nitrogen rates of 138 and 109 Kg ha-1 are responsible for maximum grain yields of wheat, which is 4235 and 3787 Kg ha-1 with and without the use of growth reducer, respectively.

This study aimed to determine the energy productivity of the different compartments of above ground biomass of forest species: Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth and Ateleia glazioviana Baill distributed in different spacing in planting: 2.0x1.0m, 2.0x1.5m, 3.0x1.0m and 3.0x1.5m, at ages of 1 and 3 years. The study was conducted in an experiment in the city of Frederico Westphalen-RS, in experimental design of randomized complete block with three replications. The determination of the energy productivity was carried out through the measurement of values of above ground biomass and power calorific value of each compartment. The different planting spacings induced different yields of biomass energy, and it was found a systematic negative trend in relation to the living space provided by lower planting space. The energy productivity achieved in the third year for all species, were higher than those of the first year. The species Eucalyptus grandis presented the greatest potential for energy productivity of wood and for the other species, equivalent to twice the Acacia mearnsii, the denser spacing (2.0x1.0m)

ABSTRACT The objective of this experiment was to determine the conversion efficiency of intercepted photosynthetically active radiation into biomass of Acacia mearnsii De Wild. seedlings. A forest species, plastic tubes (90 cm3), and 11 evaluation periods (up to 180 days after emergence) were used in this study. The leaf area index (LAI), total dry biomass (BIO), global solar radiation (GSR), cumulative intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PARic), and conversion efficiency of radiation (εb) were determined using a pyranometer (LI200X, LICOR). The value of εb in BIO seedlings of Acacia mearnsii was 7.76 g MJ-1. LAI was directly related to the efficiency of PARic, and this influenced the development, production potential and accumulation of BIO. The value of GSR flow was 11.81 MJ m-2 day-1, while the value inside the greenhouse was 6.26 MJ m-2 day-1.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar o poder calorífico superior (PCS) das árvores e a massa específica básica ponderada (ρb pond) da madeira de Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth e Ateleia glazioviana Baill distribuídas em diferentes espaçamentos em plantio: 2,0 x 1,0 m; 2,0 x 1,5 m; 3,0 x 1,0 m; e 3,0 x 1,5 m, nas idades de 1 e 3 anos. O estudo foi conduzido em um experimento localizado no Município de Frederico Westphalen, RS, em delineamento experimental de blocos completos casualizados com três repetições, no esquema de parcelas subdivididas. A determinação do PCS das árvores foi realizada a partir da ponderação dos valores obtidos em cada compartimento (madeira, casca, galho e folha), por meio de bomba calorimétrica. A determinação da ρb pond foi realizada a partir da ponderação dos valores verificados dos discos coletados em diferentes posições ao longo do tronco, usando-se o método da balança hidrostática e massa seca. O PCS de todas as espécies no primeiro ano após o plantio foi superior ao do terceiro ano, destacando-se a Acacia mearnsii com as maiores médias. A ρb pond não apresentou tendência sistemática de aumento ou redução ao longo do tempo e as espécies Acacia mearnsii e Ateleia glazioviana, os maiores valores. Os diferentes espaçamentos de plantio não induziram a variação do PCS e da ρb pond nas espécies estudadas, não sendo verificada tendência sistemática positiva ou negativa em relação ao espaço vital proporcionado pelo espaçamento.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue ajustar ecuaciones de regresión que expresen el poder calorífico superior (PCS) de la madera de cuatro especies forestales: Acacia mearnsii De Willd., Eu - calyptus grandis Hill, Mimosa scabrella Benth. y Ateleia glazioviana Baill. El procedimiento de selección de variables hacia atrás se utilizó para generar ecuaciones de PCS en función de los contenidos de material volátil (CMV), ceniza (CC), carbono fijo (CCF) y materia orgánica (CMO). Las muestras se recolectaron un año después de la plantación para la determinación de dichas variables. Todas las ecuaciones obtenidas tuvieron buena correlación, presentaron coeficientes de determinación ajustados superiores a 82 %, error estándar de estimación inferior de 1.1 % y distribución adecuada de los residuos. Las ecuaciones que implican solamente el CMV para A. mearnsii , CC para E. grandis y A. glazioviana, y los elementos del análisis proximal para M. scabrella , son tan adecuadas para estimar el PCS como las ecuaciones que incluyen más variables independientes.

A produção de fitomassa é uma função da eficiência de conversão da radiação solar fotossinteticamente ativa interceptada em fotoassimilados, variando conforme as condições em que as plantas são cultivadas. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo quantificar a eficiência de conversão da radiação solar fotossinteticamente ativa interceptada em fitomassa - εb - de mudas de Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden (eucalipto) quando submetidas a diferentes tamanhos de tubetes e densidades de plantas. Para tanto, foi conduzido um experimento, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, para estudar a produção de mudas em dois tamanhos de tubetes (pequeno e médio) e duas densidades de plantas na bandeja (alta com 100% de ocupação da bandeja e média com 50%), em que foram determinados a radiação fotossinteticamente ativa interceptada (RFAi), o índice de área foliar e a fitomassa seca total das mudas. O volume do tubete não interferiu nos valores de eficiência, mas, sim, a densidade de plantas, pois o índice de área foliar é quem determina tal valor. A εb foi de 7,33 g.MJ-1 em tubete médio e pequeno em densidade alta e de 3,26 g.MJ-1 em tubete médio e pequeno em densidade média.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a variação do poder calorífico superior (PCS) ao longo do fuste das espécies florestais Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill, Mimosa scabrella Benth. e Ateleia glazioveana Baill e também avaliar o número e as posições das amostras ao longo do fuste para a estimativa do PCS dessas espécies. Para tanto, foram retirados discos de aproximadamente dois centímetros de espessura, ao longo de 0 %, 25 %, 50 % e 75 % da altura total de árvores com um ano de idade para determinação do PCS em bomba calorimétrica (C5000, IKA WORKS). Para Eucalyptus grandis e Ateleia glazioveana, é possível estimar o PCS a partir de um disco, respectivamente, nas posições 50% e 0% da altura total, para Mimosa scabrella em dois discos, nas posições 0+75% e para Acacia mearnsii em três discos, nas posições 0+25+75% da altura total.This research had the objective of studing the variation of the calorific power along the shaft of the species forest Acacia mearnsii de Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill, Mimosa scabrella Benth. and Ateleia glazioveana Baill and also to evaluate the number and the positions of the samples along the shaft for the estimate of calorific power of these species. For so much, they were solitary disks of approximately two centimeters of thickness, along 0%, 25%, 50% and 75% of the total height of trees, with a year of age, for determination of the power calorific superior in calorimeter (C5000, IKA WORKS). For the Eucalyptus grandis and the Ateleia glazioveana it is possible to esteem the power calorific superior starting from a disk, respectively in the positions 50% and 0%, and for the Mimosa scabrella with two disks, in the positions 0+75% and for the Acacia mearnsii, three disks, in the positions 0+25+75%.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a variação axial e o efeito do desbaste na massa específica das árvores centrais de Eucalyptus grandis aos 18 anos de idade. Para tanto, foi analisado um experimento situado próximo ao litoral do Rio Grande do Sul, instalado em delineamento blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram definidos devido ao número de desbastes aplicados e variaram de zero até seis intervenções. As árvores foram selecionadas, em cada tratamento, com base no diâmetro central e, após o abate, foram medidas e cubadas pelo método de Smalian. Em seguida, foram retirados discos nas posições 0, 25, 50, 75 e 100% da altura comercial e na altura do peito (DAP), destinados à determinação da massa específica. Os resultados indicaram que a massa específica básica apresentou um decréscimo até a região do DAP, seguido de acréscimo, sem tendência de estabilização com a altura em todos os tratamentos analisados. O desbaste induziu a variação da massa específica básica em árvores centrais, porém não foi verificada uma tendência sistemática positiva ou negativa em relação ao espaço vital proporcionado pelo desbaste.This study was undertaken to evaluate the axial variation and the effect of thinning on the basic density of Eucalyptus grandis central diameter trees with 18 years of age. A thinning experiment, located in the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul, installed in random blocks with four repetitions was evaluated. The treatments were defined according to the number of interventions applied that ranged from zero to six. The trees were selected, in each treatment, on the basis of the central diameter. After cutting down, the trees were measured and the volume determined by Smalian method. Afterwards, disks were taken at the base, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the commercial height, and at the breast height (DBH), for basic density determination. The results indicated that basic density showed a decrease up to DBH, followed by an increase, without a clear tendency to stabilize with the height in all treatments analyzed. The thinning caused variation in basic density of the central trees; however, there was no positive or negative precise trend related to the beneficial space provided by thinning.

A energia da radiação solar absorvida pelas plantas é fator determinante da taxa fotossintética e pode limitar a produção, o acúmulo de biomassa e o desenvolvimento das plantas. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a interceptação da radiação luminosa e sua relação com a necessidade de manejo de plantas daninhas através de coroamento e roçada, nas espécies florestais: Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth e Ateleia glazioviana Baill, nos espaçamentos: 2,0x1,0m; 2,0x1,5m; 3,0x1,0m e 3,0x1,5m. A medição da radiação luminosa foi realizada mensalmente durante o período de 0 a 360 dias após o plantio. Os pontos de amostragens foram entre as plantas na linha e na entre-linha de plantio. O coroamento e a roçada não foram necessários quando os níveis de interceptação de radiação fotossinteticamente ativa foram maiores que 60%. Porém, tornaram-se necessários a partir do segundo mês após o plantio e com frequência de 60 dias para todas as espécies até os primeiros 180 dias. O coroamento foi dispensado para a espécie E. grandis a partir dos 210 dias e para A. mearnsii e M. scabrella após os 240 dias após o transplante. A roçada foi dispensada somente para a espécie E. grandis nos espaçamentos 2,0x1,0m e 2,0x1,5m a partir dos 210 e 240 dias após o plantio, respectivamente.The energy of solar radiation absorbed by the plants is a decisive factor of the photosynthesis tax and it can limit the production, the biomass accumulation and the development of the plants. The objective of the research was to evaluate the interception of the luminous radiation and her relationship with the need of handling undesirable plants through crowning and mowing, in the forest species: Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth e Ateleia glazioviana Baill, submitted at levels spacing: 2,0x1,0m; 2,0x1,5m; 3,0x1,0m and 3,0x1,5m. The measurement of the luminous radiation was accomplished monthly during the period from 0 to 360 days after the planting. The points of samplings were among the plants in the line and in the planting among-line. The crowning and mowing were not necessary when the levels of interception of radiation photosynthesis activate were larger than 60%. However, they became necessary starting from the second month after the planting and with a frequency of 60 days for all the species until the first 180 days. The crowning was spared for the species E. grandis starting from the 210 days and for A. mearnsii and M. scabrella after the 240 days after the transplant. Cleared was given only for the species E. grandis in the spacings 2,0x1,0m and 2,0x1,5m starting from the 210 and 240 days after the planting, respectively.

A ocorrência de geada, dependendo do grau de dano, pode se tornar um fator limitante para a condução de florestas de curta rotação. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o comportamento após ocorrências de geadas das espécies florestais Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth e Ateleia glazioveana Baill submetidas a níveis de espaçamento de 2,0x1,0m; 2,0x1,5m; 3,0x1,0 e 3,0x1,5m um ano após o plantio, na região Norte do Rio Grande do Sul. Os danos (resistência a geada) foram avaliados segundo o sistema de notas de 0 a 10, conforme a intensidade do dano na planta. Os graus de resistência à geada foram determinados em função da intensidade do dano na planta. Os níveis de espaçamento estudados não afetaram respostas das espécies em relação ao dano ocasionado por geada. A espécie Mimosa scabrella apresentou ser resistente, enquanto que Eucalyptus grandis e Ateleia glazioveana, tolerantes. Já a Acacia mearnsii apresentou ser moderadamente tolerante a tolerante.The frost occurrence depending on the damage degree, can become a limit factor for the transport of forests of short rotation. The present research has as objective evaluate the behavior after occurrences of frosts of the species forest Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth and Ateleia glazioveana Baill were submitted to levels of spacing of 2.0 x 1.0m; 2.0x1.5m; 3.0x1.0m and 3.0x1.5m one year after the planting, in the North of Rio Grande do Sul. The damages (resistance to frost) were appraised according to scale 0 to 10 according to the intensity of the damage in the plant. The frost resistance degrees were certain in function of the intensity of the damage in the plant. The spacing levels studied didn't affect the species answers in relation to the damage caused by frost. The species Mimosa scabrella presented to be resistant, while Eucalyptus grandis and Ateleia glazioveana tolerant. Already the Acacia mearnsii was moderately tolerant to tolerant.

Este artigo apresenta uma proposta para a miniaturização de antenas em microfita, do tipo inset-fed patch retangular, através da aplicação de curvas fractais de Koch aos seus contornos retilíneos. Em comparação com as antenas em microfita convencionais, as antenas patch com contornos fractais apresentam frequências de ressonância inferiores, possibilitando a fabricação de estruturas ainda mais compactas. A técnica inset-fed é investigada pela primeira vez para o casamento de impedâncias das antenas fractais, que são alimentadas através de linhas de microfita com reentrâncias. Na fase de projeto, as dimensões das antenas foram otimizadas com o auxílio do software Ansoft DesignerTM, usado para a análise precisa do comportamento eletromagnético das antenas através do método dos momentos. A partir destas simulações, vários protótipos de antenas foram construídos através da aplicação de dois tipos de contornos fractais de Koch: triangular e retangular. Para a validação da metodologia empregada, um estudo comparativo dos resultados medidos e simulados foi realizado. As simulações indicaram que as antenas fractais propostas apresentam diagramas de radiação do tipo ‘broadside’, que são similares ao de um patch retangular. Em relação à área ocupada por uma antena patch retangular, verificou-se que: para uma mesma frequência de operação, a antena fractal de Koch triangular ocupa uma área até 28,6% menor, enquanto a antena fractal de Koch retangular ocupa uma área até 40,8% menor.

Este estudo objetivou avaliar o potencial energético da madeira de Eucalyptus benthamii Maiden et Cambage. As amostras foram coletadas no município de Cerro Negro, SC, onde foram selecionadas 5 árvores, sendo retiradas amostras do fuste a 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% e 100% da altura comercial. As análises realizadas foram densidade básica, poder calorífico superior, composição química elementar, análise química imediata (teores de materiais voláteis, carbono fixo e cinzas), poder calorífico inferior, densidade energética, estoque de carbono e produção energética. As variáveis físicas e químicas estudadas e o potencial energético da madeira não apresentaram diferenças ao longo do fuste.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the effect of planting age and spacing on energy properties of different compartments of the biomass of Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, disseminated in different spacings: 2.0 x 1.0 m, 2.0 x 1.5 m, 3.0 x 1.0 m e 3.0 x 1.5 m, in the 1st, 3rd and 5th year after the planting. The present study was carried out as an experiment installed in an experimental design of randomized complete blocks in three replications. Variables determined were Biomass (BIO), Gross Calorific Value (GCV), Basic Density (BD), Energy Productivity (EP), Energy Density (ED), Fixed Carbon Content (FCC), Volatile Material Content (VMC), and Ash Content (AC). Ages have an effect on all studied variables, and in the 5th year after planting, the largest BIO, EP, BD, ED and FCC values are checked. The planting spacings induce different productions of BIO and EP, with a trend towards lower values with increasing planting spacing in all assessed periods. The compartments of trees influence BIO, GCV, FCC, VMC and AC variables. Regarding to energy, the higher the age and lower the planting spacing, the better the energy properties of biomass.

ABSTRACT The efficiency of solar radiation conversion is a variable often used in crop growth simulation models in which the production of biomass and, consequently, carbon accumulation are related to the conversion of radiant energy into chemical compounds by plants through the process of photosynthesis. The goal of this study was to determine the efficiency of conversion of intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PARi) into carbon accumulation in shoots of Ilex paraguariensis in intercropping (Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hil. and Pinus elliottii Engelm) and monoculture. The conversion efficiency of PAR in accumulated carbon was calculated based on the ratio between the accumulated carbon and the PARi involved in the process. Our results demonstrate that the higher conversion efficiency (eb) of photosynthetically active solar radiation intercepted in carbon in yerba mate sprouts was obtained in the intercropping scenario.

Abstract Sugarcane (Sacharum officinarum L.) monocropping has had a great socio-economic and environmental impact in Brazil, and agroforestry systems have been considered as an alternative for more sustainable production; however, there is a lack of field research under such conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth rates, radiation use efficiency and yield traits in sugarcane cultivated in the understory of Aleurites fordii, in two agroforestry arrangements and monocropping systems. A field experiment was conducted from July 2015 to June 2016 in the city of Frederico Westphalen, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The radiation use efficiency, assimilate partitioning, leaf area index, absolute growth rate, net assimilation rate, number of tillers, plant height, % of intercepted solar radiation, extinction coefficient, and yield in each system was evaluated. In agroforestry systems, the dynamic interactions between multiple plant species change with the time and can result in unique microclimates. The use of agroforestry systems in 12 x 12m arrangements should be prioritized because it enables greater yields and radiation availability in the understory. This study sought to provide new sustainable alternatives for farmers in order to increase the diversification of the rural property and maintain the preservation of existing agroecosystems.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the physiological behavior at different times of the day and the level of dependence between physiological variables and meteorological elements in Aleurites fordii seedlings. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using a completely randomized experimental design, in a uniform scheme composed of 10 evaluation times (from 8 am to 5 pm, with an interval of 1h between evaluations) and three replications. Each replicate consisted of three evaluation plants, totaling nine seedlings, which were arranged on a double border. The following characteristics were evaluated: leaf temperature (ºC), photosynthetically active solar radiation ((mol S-1 m-2), stomatal resistance (S cm-1), and transpiration (mmol H2O s-1 m-2) over a typical day, using a LI-1600 LI-COR digital porometer. The temperature and relative humidity were measured inside the greenhouse, using a thermohygrograph. The evaluations were performed at 244 days after sowing, between 8:00 and 17:00, with an interval of 60 minutes, totaling 10 evaluations. The physiological changes of Aleurites fordii seedlings are affected by the time of day. In general, the physiological variables are highly dependent on meteorological elements. The temperature of the greenhouse and the relative humidity are the meteorological elements that most influence the physiological behavior of Aleurites fordii seedlings.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to evaluate the elemental composition of different biomass components of the forest species Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth and Ateleia glazioviana Baill, at their first, third and fifth year after planting, aiming at bioenergetic use. The biomass elemental composition was determined by quantifying the levels of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen. The three ages, the four species, and the four compartments differ in relation to the elementary constituents. The use of trees at any age allows for energy use. The fifth year presents the best carbon and hydrogen values, being the best age for using the biomass energy of the different species. A. mearnsii presents the highest carbon values for the leaf and A. glazioviana presents the highest hydrogen values for all compartments. The leaf is the best compartment for energetic use.

ABSTRACT: The use of wood for energy purposes is common in Brazil, motivated mainly by the diversity of species that present a potential for energy production. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of tree age and spacing on the energy properties of different components of the biomass: wood, bark, and branch of the species Ateleia glazioviana Baill, distributed at different spacings: 2.0 × 1.0m, 2.0 × 1.5m, 3.0 × 1.0m, and 3.0 × 1.5m in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th year after the planting. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The following variables were determined: biomass (BIO), gross calorific power (GCV), basic density (BD), energy productivity (EP), energy density (ED), fixed carbon content (FCC), volatile material content (VMC), and ash content (AC). Different tree ages significantly affected all analyzed variables, increasing the distribution of BIO, EP, AC, BD, and ED with no tendency to stabilize over time. The four tree spacings induced different levels of BIO and EP, with a trend toward lower values with increasing tree spacing for all assessed periods. The four components of the trees had a significant effect on the variables BIO, EP, GCV, FCC, VMC, and AC.

Abstract: We report a first-in-human clinical trial using chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells targeting CD37, an antigen highly expressed in B- and T-cell malignancies. Five patients with relapsed or refractory CD37+ lymphoid malignancies were enrolled and infused with autologous CAR-37 T cells. CAR-37 T cells expanded in the peripheral blood of all patients and, at peak, comprised >94% of the total lymphocytes in 4 of 5 patients. Tumor responses were observed in 4 of 5 patients with 3 complete responses, 1 mixed response, and 1 patient whose disease progressed rapidly and with relative loss of CD37 expression. Three patients experienced prolonged and severe pancytopenia, and in 2 of these patients, efforts to ablate CAR-37 T cells, which were engineered to coexpress truncated epidermal growth factor receptor, with cetuximab were unsuccessful. Hematopoiesis was restored in these 2 patients after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. No other severe, nonhematopoietic toxicities occurred. We investigated the mechanisms of profound pancytopenia and did not observe activation of CAR-37 T cells in response to hematopoietic stem cells in vitro or hematotoxicity in humanized models. Patients with pancytopenia had sustained high levels of interleukin-18 (IL-18) with low levels of IL-18 binding protein in their peripheral blood. IL-18 levels were significantly higher in CAR-37-treated patients than in both cytopenic and noncytopenic cohorts of CAR-19-treated patients. In conclusion, CAR-37 T cells exhibited antitumor activity, with significant CAR expansion and cytokine production. CAR-37 T cells may be an effective therapy in hematologic malignancies as a bridge to hematopoietic stem cell transplant. CD19-directed chimerical antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) products have gained US Food and Drug Administration approval for systemic large B-cell lymphoma. Because of concerns about potential immune cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS), patients with primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma (PCNSL) were excluded from all pivotal CAR-T studies. We conducted a phase 1/2 clinical trial of tisagenlecleucel in a highly refractory patients with PCNSL and significant unmet medical need. Here, we present results of 12 relapsed patients with PCNSL who were treated with tisagenlecleucel and followed for a median time of 12.2 months (range, 3.64-23.5). Grade 1 cytokine release syndrome was observed in 7/12 patients (58.3%), low-grade ICANS in 5/12 (41.6%) patients, and only 1 patient experienced grade 3 ICANS. Seven of 12 patients (58.3%) demonstrated response, including a complete response in 6/12 patients (50%). There were no treatment-related deaths. Three patients had ongoing complete remission at data cutoff. Tisagenlecleucel expanded in the peripheral blood and trafficked to the CNS. Exploratory analysis identified T-cell, CAR T, and macrophage gene signatures in cerebrospinal fluid following infusion when compared with baseline. Overall, tisagenlecleucel was well tolerated and resulted in a sustained remission in 3/7 (42.9%) of initial responders. These data suggest that tisagenlecleucel is safe and effective in this highly refractory patient population. Clobenzorex, an optically active N-substituted derivative of (+)amphetamine, has been identified on the illicit market. Because so little is known regarding the pharmacology or abuse potential of this agent, it was examined in tests of stimulus generalization in rats trained to discriminate 1 mg/kg of (+)amphetamine from vehicle to determine if it would produce amphetamine-appropriate responding. Clobenzorex (ED50 = 6.6 mg/kg) substituted for (+)amphetamine (ED50 = 0.3 mg/kg) but was approximately twenty times less potent than the training drug. Clobenzorex was also compared with (+)amphetamine and cocaine for its ability to induce locomotor stimulation and rearing frequency in mice. Clobenzorex was active in both assays but was less potent than either (+)amphetamine or cocaine. It is concluded that, although weaker than (+)amphetamine, clobenzorex constitutes an agent with amphetamine-like central stimulant behavioral properties.

Recent in vivo microdialysis studies have indicated that presynaptic deficits occur in brain 5-HT neurochemistry during cocaine withdrawal. The purpose of the present study was to utilize the head-twitch response (HTR) produced by 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) to investigate the dose- and time-response effects of this deficit. The HTR is considered to be a sensitive model for activation of central postsynaptic 5-HT2A receptors in rodents. Thus, different groups of mice were injected with cocaine twice daily (0, 0.1, 0.5, 2.5, 5 or 10 mg/kg, i.p.) for 7 or 13 days. During HTR testing, at 24 h following last injection, the treated mice received either 1) no cocaine; 2) their corresponding daily dose as challenge injection; or 3) a 10 mg/kg challenge dose. In a second series of experiments, extended abstinence studies were performed under the conditions of experimental protocols 1 and 2 for both 7- and 13-day cocaine (0, 0.5 and 5 mg/kg, twice daily) exposure regimens at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h following last cocaine injection. In protocol 3, the effects of a 10 mg/kg challenge dose of cocaine were studied following prolonged withdrawal from chronic cocaine exposure (0, 0.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg, twice daily for 7 and 13 days) at 24, 96 and 240 h abstinence. In experimental protocol 1 at 24 h abstinence in the 7 day exposure group, only lower doses of cocaine (0.5-2.5 mg/kg) significantly attenuated the 5-HTP-induced HTR. The deficit in 0.5 mg/kg group persisted up to 72 h abstinence. Although in the 13 day cocaine exposure groups (experimental paradigm 1) mean HTRs were generally reduced, they however failed to attain statistical significance throughout the 96 h abstinence. In protocol 2 very low challenge doses of cocaine (0.1-0.5 mg/kg) in their corresponding pretreatment groups significantly reduced the behavior at diverse abstinence intervals in both 7- and 13-day exposure regimens relative to their chronically vehicle-treated controls which had received a vehicle challenge injection during HTR testing. Unlike small doses of cocaine, larger challenge doses (5-10 mg/kg) of the stimulant potentiated the HTR score at various abstinence periods. However, the degree of the potentiations are considerably less than the ability of acute cocaine administration in enhancing the 5-HTP-induced HTR. The 10 mg/kg challenge injection in experimental protocol 3 at 24 h abstinence in the 7-day exposed mice attenuated the 5-HTP-induced HTR in 0.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg cocaine-treated groups relative to their chronic vehicle-treated controls receiving a 10 mg/kg challenge cocaine injection. The deficit in chronic 10 mg/kg cocaine-exposed mice persisted up to 240 h postcocaine abstinence. On the other hand, in the 13-day regimen, the challenge 10 mg/kg dose exhibited significant potentiations at 24 h and at 96 h for 5 and 0.5 mg/kg chronic cocaine doses respectively, but it also produced significant deficits in 0.5 and 10 mg/kg chronic doses of cocaine at 240 h abstinence. Overall, the present results suggest that enduring deficits occur in presynaptic serotonin neurochemistry and serotonergic adaptive mechanisms are exquisitely sensitive to chronic administration of low- and high-doses of cocaine.
