A combined photoconductivity, absorption, and thermoluminescence study was performed to understand the absence of luminescence from Ce
3+ in LaAlO3 :Ce3+ . It is demonstrated that the absence of luminescence is the result of Ce3+ ionization from the 5d excited states, which are all located in the conduction band. Ce3+ ionization is accompanied by the formation of several broad absorption and photoconductivity bands, which are assigned to electron traps. A time and temperature dependent optical investigation of these traps reveals the conditions under which electrons are transferred from Ce3+ to traps and vice versa, from traps back to Ce4+ . The observed difference in energy needed to thermally or optically release electrons from traps is qualitatively explained in terms of the location of the ground and excited states of the electron traps with respect to the conduction band. In this paper, we investigated the scintillation properties of LuI
3 :Ce3+ . Radioluminescence, light output, energy resolution, and γ-scintillation decay are reported. We find an extremely high light output of 98 000±10 000 photons/MeV. LuI3 :Ce3+ also gives a very high electron-hole (e-h) pair response when it is coupled with an avalanche photodiode (APD) (92 000±9000 e-h pairs/MeV). With an APD, a best energy resolution (full width at half maximum over the peak position) of 3.3%±0.3% for 662 keV γ quanta is observed. A combination of an extremely high light output and a good energy resolution makes LuI3 :Ce3+ an ideal scintillator for radiation sensor applications. Some drawbacks due to the hygroscopicity and the difficult growth of LuI3 :Ce3+ crystals are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

In this work we investigated the suitability of newly synthesized series of haloborate phosphors with the general formula M
2 B5 O9 X:Ce3+ (M=Sr or Ca; X=Br or Cl) for thermal neutron detection and with reduced sensitivity to γ background. Storage properties such as yield of photostimulated luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence are reported. Based on these results the series of the haloborates with 99% enrichment of10 B was sensitized to increase neutron sensitivity. The PSL yields of enriched with10 B haloborates were compared with a common mixture of BaFBr:Eu2+ (40 wt %) and Gd2 O3 (60 wt %) under γ and neutron irradiation. The PSL light yield from Ca2 10 B5 O9 Cl:Ce,Na phosphor after neutron irradiation is 16 times less than that from BaFBr:Eu2+ xGd2 O3 . However, the neutron to γ discrimination of Ca2 10 B5 O9 Cl:Ce,Na (1%) is almost an order of magnitude better than that of BaFBr:Eu2+ ×Gd2 O3 . Therefore, haloborate phosphors should be more suitable when utilized in environments with a high γ background. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The possibility to use Mn
2+ co-doping to modify the emission properties of Pr3+ -based quantum cutting phosphors—i.e., phosphors that emit one UV and one visible photon for each absorbed vacuum UV (VUV) photon—into phosphors that emit two visible photons, was studied experimentally. In this respect a luminescence excitation study, using synchrotron radiation, between 500 and 50 nm of Pr3+ and Mn2+ impurities in SrAlF5 , CaAlF5 , and NaMgF3 was performed. Excitation of Pr3+ into the 4f5d excited states results in emission of UV photons from the1 S0 state followed by visible photons from the3 P0 state with an internal quantum efficiency exceeding 100%. It was found that a favorable overlap between the1 S0 →1 I6 Pr3+ emission and the6 A1 →4 Eg ,4 A1g Mn2+ absorption exists that should promote energy transfer from Pr3+ to Mn2+ . However no such energy transfer could be observed in SrAlF5 . At higher excitation energies (>7 eV) intense structured Mn2+ excitation bands are found that are assigned to 3d5 →3d4 4s transitions, Mn2+ related charge transfer transitions, and Mn2+ bound excitons. These bands have an unfavorable overlap with the Pr3+ 4f5d states, preventing efficient selective Pr3+ excitation, prerequisite for the quantum cutting process. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Scintillation and luminescence characteristics of Rb
2 LiYBr6 doped with 0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, and 5% Ce3+ are presented. Under optical and x-ray excitation, Ce3+ doublet emission is observed at 385 and 420 nm. Rb2 LiYBr6 :0.5% Ce3+ shows very high thermal neutron scintillation light output of 83 000 photons/neutron. An excellent neutron peak resolution of 3.6% (full width at half maximum over peak position) is observed for the 4.8 MeV neutron-reaction products energy response in Rb2 LiYBr6 :0.1% Ce3+ . This peak shows up at 3.6 MeV γ-equivalent energy and therefore it gives an α/β ratio of 0.74. The combination of a large fraction of neutron absorption in natural6 Li (62%), a sharp neutron response peak, high light yield, and large α/β ratio makes Rb2 LiYBr6 :Ce3+ an efficient scintillator for thermal neutron detection. Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
A search for the muon catalyzed fusion reaction dd --> ^4He +\gamma in the dd\mu muonic molecule was performed using the experimental \mu CF installation TRITON and NaI(Tl) detectors for \gamma-quanta. The high pressure target filled with deuterium at temperatures from 85 K to 800 K was exposed to the negative muon beam of the JINR phasotron to detect \gamma-quanta with energy 23.8 MeV. The first experimental estimation for the yield of the radiative deuteron capture from the dd\mu state J=1 was obtained at the level n_{\gamma}\leq 2\times 10^{-5} per one fusion., Comment: 9 pages, 3 Postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Accelerators and Storage Rings - Abstract
A background roughly two orders of magnitude higher than tolerable was found in the n_TOF facility at CERN during the first measurements [1]. This note describes a series of additional measurements performed in the n_TOF experimental area to study the origin and the characteristics of the background. The program of these measurements was determined taking into account the results from the simulations carried out by the EET group [2]. A first phase of measurements confirmed what was expected from the simulations, namely that the dominant source of background was due to neutrons generated by negative muon capture. Actions to reduce the background were taken according to the results from both measurements and simulations. An iron shielding wall 3.2 m thick was then placed in between the sweeping magnet and the second collimator, with the purpose of stopping most of the muons. In a second phase of measurements, results showed that the additional shielding reduced the main component of the background by about a factor of 30.

A detailed description of the analysis of neutral kaons decaying to \pen\ is given, based on the complete set of data collected with the CPLEAR experiment. Using a novel approach involving initially strangeness-tagged \kn\ and \knb , time-dependent decay-rate asymmetries were measured. These asymmetries enabled \Tz - and \CPTz -violation parameters to be measured in the context of a systematic study. The highlights of this study are the first direct observation of \Tz\ violation and the direct determination of the \CPTz\ parameter \red\ with an accuracy improved by two orders of magnitude with respect to the current value.

The CPLEAR set-up (modified) has been used to determine the K/sub L/- K/sub S/ mass difference by a method where neutral-kaon strangeness oscillations are monitored through kaon strong interactions, rather than semileptonic decays, thus requiring no assumptions on CPT invariance for the decay amplitudes. Using strangeness tagging at production time, CPLEAR measures time-dependent decay rate asymmetries between $K^0$ and $\bar{K}^0$, for picnic and semileptonic decays. Parameters describing CP, T, and CPT violation can be obtained with high precision. In the semileptonic channels neutral kaons are strangeness tagged also at the decay time, by the lepton charge, thus allowing the difference between the transition rates of $\bar{K}^0 \to K^0$ and $K^0 \to \bar{K}^0$ to be measured. In this way CPLEAR obtains the first direct measurement of T violation. By fitting the semileptonic rates under the constraint of the unitarity relation, we prove that in the reported measurement T violation is not mocked by CPT-violation effects in the decay amplitudes. Other CPLEAR measurements, only in part reported here, contribute to the experimental accuracy of the unitarity relation.

A detailed description is given of the analysis of neutral kaons decaying to \({\mathrm{\pi^+\pi^-}}\), based on the complete set of data collected with the CPLEAR experiment. Using a novel approach involving initially strangeness-tagged \({\mathrm{K^0}}\) and \({\mathrm{\overline{K}^0}}\), the time-dependent decay-rate asymmetry has been measured. This asymmetry, resulting from the interference between the \({\mathrm{K_S}}\) and \({\mathrm{K_L}}\) decay amplitudes, has enabled both the magnitude and phase of the CP-violation parameter, \(\eta_{+-}\), to be measured, with a precision comparable to that of the current world-average values.

A detailed description is given of the analysis of neutral kaons decaying to pi (+)pi (-), based on the complete set of data collected with the CPLEAR experiment. Using a novel approach involving initially strangeness-tagged K-0 and (K) over bar (0), the time-dependent decay-rate asymmetry has been measured. This asymmetry, resulting from the interference between the K-S and K-L decay amplitudes, has enabled both the magnitude and phase of the CP-violation parameter, eta (+-), to be measured, with a precision comparable to that of the current world-average values. The CPT-violation parameters \redd\ and \imd\ determined recently by CPLEAR are used to evaluate the \kn --\knb\ mass and decay-width differences, as given by the difference between the diagonal elements of the neutral-kaon mixing matrix $({\mathrm M}-\i\Gamma/2)$. The results --- $({\mathrm M}_{\kn\kn}-{\mathrm M}_{\knb\knb}) = ( -1.5 \pm 2.0 )\times10^{-18}$ \gev\ and $(\Gamma_{\kn\kn}-\Gamma_{\knb\knb}) = ( 3.9 \pm 4.2 )\times 10^{-18}$ \gev\ --- are consistent with CPT invariance. The CPT invariance is also shown to hold within a few times $10^{-3}-10^{-4}$ for many of the amplitudes describing neutral-kaon decays to different final states.

We test the Principle of Equivalence for particles and antiparticles, using CPLEAR data on tagged K-0 and (K) over bar(0) decays into pi(+) pi(-). For the first time, we search for possible annual, monthly and diurnal modulations of the observables \eta(+-)\ and phi(+-), that could be correlated with variations in astrophysical potentials. Within the accuracy of CPLEAR, the measured values of \eta(+-)\ and phi(+-) are found not to be correlated with changes of the gravitational potential. We analyze data assuming effective scalar, vector and tensor interactions, and we conclude that the Principle of Equivalence between particles and antiparticles holds to a level of 6.5, 4.3 and 1.8 X 10(-9), respectively, for scalar, vector and tensor potentials originating from the Sun with a range much greater than the distance Earth-Sun. We also study energy-dependent effects that might arise from vector or tensor interactions. Finally, we compile upper limits on the gravitational coupling difference between K-0 and (K) over bar(0) as a function of the scalar, vector and tensor interaction range. We apply a forward dispersion relation to the regeneration amplitude for kaon scattering on $\PCtw$ using all available data. The CPLEAR data at low energies allow the determination of the net contribution from the subthreshold region which turns out to be much smaller than earlier evaluations, solving a long standing puzzle.

search ,decay - Abstract
Data from the CPLEAR experiment, together with the most recent world averages for some of the neutral-kaon parameters, were constrained with the Bell-Steinberger (or unitarity) relation, allowing the T-violation parameter Re(epsilon) and the CPT-violation parameter Im(delta) of the neutral-kaon mixing matrix to be determined with an increased accuracy: Re(epsilon)=(164.9 +/- 2.5) x 10(-5), Im(delta)=(2.4 +/- 5.0) x 10(-5). Moreover, the constraint allows the CM-violation parameter for the neutral-kaon semileptonic decays, Re(), to be determined for the first time. The Delta S not equal Delta Q parameters Re(x_) and Im(x(+)) are given with an increased accuracy. The quantity Re(y + x_), which enters the T-violation CPLEAR asymmetry previously published, is determined to be (- 0.2 +/- 0.3) x 10(-3). The value obtained for Re(delta) is in agreement with the one resulting from a previous unconstrained fit and has a slightly smaller error. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V, All rights reserved. We study pi pi correlations in the exclusive reaction (p) over bar p --> 2 pi(+)2 pi(-)pi(0) at rest with complete reconstruction of the kinematics for each event. Inclusive and differential distributions properly normalized show an enhancement for small invariant masses M++,M-- of like-pion pairs. An even stronger enhancement is seen for the double differential distributions for low pion-pair masses. The signal is strongest when the pi(0) energy is large and much weaker when this energy is small. Dynamical models with resonances in the final state are confronted with the data. For the kinematic situation where the rho 3 pi channel is important the simulation predicts a large pion correlation for the double differential density, qualitatively explaining the observed bahaviour. The stochastic HBT mechanism is not supported by these findings for the exclusive annihilation reaction studied. European Physical Journal C
