This paper explores the skills that Hong Kong employers and graduates see as important to have in the workplace as the result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our data are interviews with 40 employers and 69 graduates in the territory. Using reflexive thematic analysis, our qualitative findings center around four themes. First, we highlight the necessity for graduates to have hard and soft skills when entering Hong Kong workplaces. Second, we reveal the disjuncture that exists regarding the skills that graduates acquire at university and those expected in prospective workplaces. Third, we outline the perceived strength in hard skills possessed by graduates. Fourth, we elucidate the perceived deficit in graduates' soft skills upon entering the workplace. We discuss the implications of our findings not just for understanding the workplace during the pandemic, but also in post-COVID-19 workplaces.

There are both educational and cultural benefits to first language (L1) instruction, particularly in the early years of school, but in Australia, few Indigenous language-speaking students are taught in their own languages. Teaching mathematics in Indigenous languages requires both linguistically capable Indigenous educators and the identification and development of suitable mathematics terminology. This paper reports on the collaborative development of a program reintroducing mathematics lessons in Mawng language at Warruwi Community School. This project developed the capacity of an Indigenous educator to take on more responsibility for the content of the class teaching. Lessons focussing on spatifal sequencing terminology were developed to extend students' use of core Mawng grammatical features while also reinforcing important local cultural knowledge. A collaboration between a non-Indigenous researcher and a Mawng educator, the paper concludes with factors contributing to the sustainability of the project.

At the Peugeot Center for Engineering Service in Developing Communities at Lipscomb University, seventeen years of experience have provided the foundation for a program that creates lasting impact. In comparison to other service learning or humanitarian engineering programs, the Peugeot Center is unique in that it achieves substantial impact on students, communities, and engineering professionals. This paper describes the model and mentoring employed by the Peugeot Center with supporting examples from a recent project. The case study describes a potable water system that was designed by a team of students, a professional engineer, and a partnering organization in Guatemala called ADICAY. Though the professional engineer and ADICAY supported the overall design work, the students supported the project by completing a site survey, designing the piping layout, and leading the onsite construction. Through mentoring from the professional engineer, the students developed skills in project management, teamwork, communication, and ethical decision-making. The professional engineer noted the opportunity to use their engineering skills to serve others as a primary reason for involvement. By partnering with ADICAY, the students learned about the complex cultural, social, economic, and environmental impacts of their engineering work. The installed system provides potable water to 113 household taps in a rural Mayan community. A medical clinic held before and after the installation of the water system showed a reduction in water-borne illness diagnoses from 40% to 11%. Additionally, data from the clinic showed a lower rate of waterborne illness diagnoses in Setzimaaj (11%) compared to surrounding communities without potable water (33%). Overall, the success of the project is attributed to significant mentoring as well as the deep trust that was built in these partnerships. Lessons learned and best practices for employing a model similar to the Peugeot Center's are reflected throughout the paper.

A multiple probe design across behaviors, replicated across teaching teams, was used to evaluate the effectiveness of training plus reciprocal peer coaching on teaching teams' implementation of Pyramid Model (PM) practices. In this study, teaching teams (three dyads and one triad) were provided with training around the use of targeted PM practices and reciprocal peer coaching. Coaching required teachers within each team to observe and provide feedback to one another around their use of targeted PM practices. Data from this study indicate reciprocal peer coaching is an effective and efficient way for early childhood teaching teams to increase their use of PM practices. Increased use of PM practices generalized across classroom activities and maintained following the removal of peer coaching. Results, limitations, impacts on the field, and next steps are discussed.

Usage-based approaches to additional-language acquisition have identified numerous determinants of language learning, two of which were the focus of our study: frequency and cue contingency. Specifically, we examined how an immersion experience may impact sensitivity to these two determinants as reflected in the production of 4,808 pairs of nouns (N) and adjectives (ADJ) by 50 anglophone learners of Spanish and French. We analyzed the use of N/ADJ combinations using mixed linear regressions for frequency and two measures of delta P, a unidirectional measure of lexical association strength reflecting cue contingency. In all three models, we explored the impact of time and four additional variables: task, initial proficiency, target language, and phraseological unit. Our analysis revealed stasis over time. Additionally, our analysis revealed phraseological unit, task, and target language each to be significant in at least one model; initial proficiency did not contribute to significantly predicting phraseological use.

The purpose of this non-experimental, quantitative case study was to compare the academic success of community college students over three academic years (2016-17 through 2018-19) before the onset of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) based on final grades and the influence of student factors, class size, and faculty characteristics using archival data from selected online and on-ground classes at a Middle Tennessee community college. Female students, part-time students, and non-traditional students were more likely to be successful. Successful students were generally more likely to be taught by full-time faculty and tenured faculty.

This paper looks at the tension between the desire to claim predictive ability for Agent-Based Models (ABMs) and its extreme difficulty for social and ecological systems, suggesting that this is the main cause for the continuance of a rhetoric of prediction that is at odds with what is achievable. Following others, it recommends that it is better to avoid giving the impression of predictive ability until this has been iteratively and independently verified, due to the danger of suggesting more than is empirically warranted, especially in non-modellers. It notes that there is a restricted and technical context where prediction is useful, that of meta-modelling -- when we are trying to explain and understand our own simulation models. If one is going to claim prediction, then a lot more care needs to be taken, implying minimal standards in practice and transparent honesty about the empirical track record -- the over-enthusiastic claiming of prediction in casual ways needs to cease.

Introduction: There is an increasing need for occupational therapists with the skills to provide low vision services, however, there is a lack of standardized training of low vision occupational therapy services. The purpose of this study is to design and evaluate a course for occupational therapy students to improve their skills and knowledge about ophthalmology and low vision. Methods: A multifaceted, 15-week curriculum using didactic learning, clinical experience, and reflective writing was created to instruct second-year occupational therapy students in ophthalmology and low vision. Participants included 19 occupational therapy students from Thomas Jefferson University. Each trainee participated in the course modules and then submitted their course evaluations and reflective writings for review. Participants evaluated their satisfaction with the course using a Likert-scale and open-ended comments. Reflective writing from each participant was reviewed by occupational therapy faculty authors (AB, AL). Results: Nineteen students participated in the course, with 19 (100%) of participants reporting being "satisfied" or "highly satisfied" with the course. Analysis of the reflective writings revealed three main themes: the impact of eye-related medical conditions on daily life, insight into the provider-patient interaction and relationship, and the potential role of the occupational therapist on the vision team as an agent to maximize patient adjustment and function. Discussion: This collaborative, multimodal interprofessional educational model can assist in training and sensitizing occupational therapy students in the areas of ophthalmology and low vision. Implications for Practitioners: This report provides a model for medical educators to utilize in the training of occupational therapy students.

This study aims to advance the understanding of sociolinguistic competence among near-native speakers and to further knowledge about the acquisition of variable structures. We conduct a quantitative analysis of variable future-time expression in informal conversations between near-native and native speakers of French. In addition to examining linguistic constraints that have been investigated in previous research, we build on prior work by introducing a new factor that enables us to consider the role that formality of the variants plays in the use of variable future-time expression. We conclude by comparing these new findings to those for the same dataset and other variable structures (namely, negation and interrogatives, Donaldson, 2016, 2017) and by advocating for more research that consists of multiple, complementary analyses of the same dataset.

A large body of research suggests that families' engagement in their children's education is a crucial factor in promoting school success for children and youth. Family engagement in school is associated with improved academic achievement and reductions in social and behavioral problems. Research also suggests that collaboration between schools and families is an important support for students with learning and behavioral challenges, including students with disabilities. The importance of engaging families in their children's schooling is recognized in both general education and special education laws and policy initiatives. Schools in every state in the country are implementing some version of a multitiered system of support (MTSS) to improve outcomes for all students, including those with or at risk for disabilities. This article offers recommendations for educators to support family-school partnerships within the context of MTSS. These recommendations are based on family engagement research and the authors' experiences supporting schools throughout the country in implementing MTSS and intensive intervention through national technical assistance centers, and other federal, state, and local projects focused on implementation of tiered systems. The recommendations are intended to help educators partner with families to support students' learning and behavior and sustain these partnerships by aligning and embedding family engagement across the tiers of MTSS.

In the current study, we examined the role of first-language (L1) influence on the additional-language development of grammatical gender marking in Spanish. The participants were L1 speakers of English or French (N = 215), who were learning Spanish and who were at three instructional levels. The data came from their use of gender marking in noun-modifier pairs in an argumentative essay. We adopted the unified methodological framework developed by Scott Jarvis and we applied insights from variationist second language acquisition to contribute to the discussion about whether learners' L1 impacts variability in targetlike gender marking in additional-language Spanish. Specifically, we designed our study to investigate four types of evidence that Jarvis identified (intragroup homogeneity, intergroup heterogeneity, cross-language congruity, and intralingual contrasts), and we used variationist methods to account for other factors that are known to impact variable use of gender marking. The quantitative analyses supported each type of evidence, consequently demonstrating that these learners' L1 influenced their variable use of gender marking in Spanish. We concluded by reflecting on the contributions that the current study has made to the understanding of gender marking in additional-language Spanish and to research on L1 influence more generally.
