Nanoliposomes are widely used as delivery vehicles for active compounds. Nanoliposomes from rapeseed phospholipids were incorporated into interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels of gelatin methacryloyl and alginate. The multiscale physicochemical properties of the hydrogels are studied both on the surface and through the thickness of the 3D network. The obtained composite hydrogels exhibited strong mechanical properties and a highly porous surface. The blend ratio, as well as the concentration of nanoliposomes, affects the properties of the hydrogels. Nanofunctionalized hydrogels induced keratinocyte ​growth. These advantageous characteristics may open up many applications of the developed hydrogels in drug delivery and tissue engineering.

In this study, a dimensionless design approach was presented for translating flat-faced follower mechanism with two-circular-arc cam. Instead of second arc radius (r2), maximum follower lift (smax) and angle of the cam rotation angle (2θmax) variables from the cam profile design parameters were made dimensionless using r2∕r (=λ), smax∕r (=ψ) and θmax∕π (=μ) respectively. Equations for cam profile and follower movement were derived and graphics were obtained depending on the dimensionless parameters. λ and ψ should be in the range [0.0, 1.0], but μ should be in the range [0.0, 0.5]. λ and ψ were changed in the range [0.10, 0.90] and μ in the [0.25, 0.45] range and λ, ψ and μ values were determined for the cam profile. Maximum velocity (vmax), maximum absolute acceleration (amax) and average follower lift (save) changes, which are one of the critical characteristics of follower, were examined for possible cam profiles according to the change of λ, ψ and μ. As a result, vmax and save decreased when μ was increased, vmax and save increased and amax decreased when ψ was increased, amax and save increased when λ was increased.

Abstract Background A variety of effective methods for treatment of hemorrhoids has been proposed. In recent years, there has been an increasing number of studies comparing transanal hemorrhoidal dearterilization (THD) and conventional hemorrhoidectomy (CH), but the focus of most studies has been about the early postoperative results. The data about long-term outcomes is still limited. We aimed to compare Doppler-guided THD and CH with regard to early and long-term postoperative results. Methods The conducted prospective research included 287 patients who underwent CH (167 cases) or Doppler-guided THD with mycopexy (120 patients) between November 2010 and December 2015. Information on hemorrhoidal stage, demographic data, presenting symptoms, complications, duration of hospital stay, postoperative pain, patients’ satisfaction and follow-up were obtained. Statistical tests were performed by SPSS 19.0. Results There was no significant difference between the studied groups according to gender, mean age, preoperative prolapse, pain and pruritus, hemorrhoidal stage and postoperative complications. Preoperative bleeding was more frequent in THD group (p = 0,002). The mean visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores in CH and THD groups on days 1, 2 and 7 were 7.01 vs 5.03, 5.07 vs 2.98, 2.39 vs 0,57 (p = 0,000). Practically, there was no difference in VAS on day 30 and patients’ satisfaction at the 18th month. Mean hospital stay was 5,13 (CH) and 3,38 days (THD), p = 0,000. The postoperative follow-up was between 18 and 78 months (mean 46 ± 16 months). During this stage, 5 patients (2,99%) in CH group required surgery for recurrence. In THD group, 3 patients (2,5%), all with 4th-degree hemorrhoids underwent additional procedures (p 0,802). Conclusions Doppler-guided THD seems to be an efficient and safe option for treatment of hemorrhoids, related to lower postoperative pain and excellent, similar long-term outcomes compared to CH. For advanced grades of hemorrhoids, Doppler-guided THD could be a valuable alternative, but there is a need for patients’ selection. Composite axisymmetric shells have numerous applications; many researchers have taken advantage of the general shell element or the semi-analytical formulation to analyze these structures. The present study is devoted to the nonlinear analysis of composite axisymmetric shells by using a 1D three nodded axisymmetric shell element. Both low and higher-order shear deformations are included in the formulation. The displacement field is considered to be nonlinear function of the nodal rotations. This assumption eliminates the restriction of small rotations between two successive increments. Both Total Lagrangian Formulation and Generalized Displacement Control Method are employed for analyzing the shells. Several numerical tests are performed to corroborate the accuracy and efficiency of the suggested approach.

Bioprinting has enabled the creation of intricate scaffolds that replicate the physical, chemical, and structural characteristics of natural tissues. Recently, hydrogels have been used to fabricate such scaffolds for several biomedical applications and tissue engineering. However, the small pore size of conventional hydrogels impedes cellular migration into and remodeling of scaffolds, diminishing their regenerative potential. Porous scaffolds have been utilized for their improved diffusion of nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and waste products. However, traditional methods of generating porous structures require multiple processing steps, making them incompatible with bioprinting. Recently, we developed a method to generate multi-scale porous structures by foaming hydrogel precursors prior to printing to form colloidal bioinks. Here, to further improve the biological, mechanical, and physical properties, we functionalize colloidal bioinks with nanoliposomes (NL), one of the most promising methods for bioactive delivery. We assess the impact of the concentration of NL on the characteristics of bioinks made from gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and their resulting scaffolds. Anionic liposomes made from rapeseed lecithin of 110 nm were synthesized and found to be stable over several weeks. Increasing concentrations of NL decreased the zeta potential and increased the viscosity of foamed bioinks, improving their rheological properties for printing. Furthermore, the incorporation of NL allowed for precise adjustment of the macropore size and bulk mechanical properties without any chemical interaction or impact on photocrosslinking. The nanofunctionalized foam bioinks, composed exclusively of natural components, demonstrated significant antioxidant activity and were printed into multilayered scaffolds with high printability. The foam-embedded NL showed remarkable biocompatibility with myoblasts, and cell-laden bioinks were able to be successfully bioprinted. Due to their high biocompatibility, tunable mechanical properties, printability, and antioxidant behavior, the nanofunctionalized porous scaffolds have promise for a variety of biomedical applications, including those that require precise delivery of therapeutic substances and tissue engineering., (© 2024 IOP Publishing Ltd. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurological condition that is connected with a decline in a person's memory as well as their cognitive ability. One of the key topics of AD research has been the exploration of metabolic causes. We investigated the effects of treadmill exercise and intranasal insulin on learning and memory impairment and the expression of IGF1, BDNF, and GLUT4 in hypothalamus. The animals were put into 9 groups at random. In this study, we examined the impact of insulin on spatial memory in male Wistar rats and analyzed the effects of a 4-week pretreatment of moderate treadmill exercise and insulin on the mechanisms of improved hypothalamic glucose metabolism through changes in gene and protein expression of IGF1, BDNF, and GLUT4. We discovered that rat given Aβ 25-35 had impaired spatial learning and memory, which was accompanied by higher levels of Aβ plaque burden in the hippocampus and lower levels of IGF1, BDNF, and GLUT4 mRNA and protein expression in the hypothalamus. Additionally, the administration of exercise training and intranasal insulin results in the enhancement of spatial learning and memory impairments, the reduction of plaque burden in the hippocampus, and the enhancement of the expression of IGF1, BDNF, and GLUT4 in the hypothalamus of rats that were treated with Aβ 25-35 . Our results show that the improvement of learning and spatial memory due to the improvement of metabolism and upregulation of the IGF1, BDNF, and GLUT4 pathways can be affected by pretreatment exercise and intranasal insulin., (© 2024. Nanoliposomes are nano-sized vesicles that can be used as drug delivery carriers with the ability to encapsulate both hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds. Moreover, their lipid compositions facilitate their internalization by cells. However, the interaction between nanoliposomes and the membrane barrier of the human body is not well-known. If cellular tests and animal testing offer a solution, their lack of physiological relevance and ethical concerns make them unsuitable to properly mimic human body complexity. Microfluidics, which allows the environment of the human body to be imitated in a controlled way, can fulfil this role. However, existing models are missing the presence of something that would mimic a basal membrane, often consisting of a simple cell layer on a polymer membrane. In this study, we investigated the diffusion of nanoliposomes in a microfluidic system and found the optimal parameters to maximize their diffusion. Then, we incorporated a custom made GelMA with a controlled degree of substitution and studied the passage of fluorescently labeled nanoliposomes through this barrier. Our results show that highly substituted GelMA was more porous than lower substitution GelMA. Overall, our work lays the foundation for the incorporation of a hydrogel mimicking a basal membrane on a drug delivery microfluidic platform.

Curcumin is known for its anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and antioxidant properties, but its use in biological applications is hindered by its sensitivity to light, oxygen, and temperature. Furthermore, due to its low water solubility, curcumin has a poor pharmacokinetic profile and bioavailability. In this study, we evaluated the potential application of curcumin as a neuroprotective agent encapsulated in RGD peptide-PEGylated nanoliposomes developed from salmon-derived lecithin. Salmon lecithin, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, was used to formulate empty or curcumin-loaded nanoliposomes. Transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and nanoparticle tracking analysis characterizations indicated that the marine-derived peptide-PEGylated nanoliposomes were spherical in shape, nanometric in size, and with an overall negative charge. Cytotoxicity tests of curcumin-loaded nanoliposomes revealed an improved tolerance of neurons to curcumin as compared to free curcumin. Wild-type SH-SY5Y were treated for 24 h with curcumin-loaded nanoliposomes, followed by 24 h incubation with conditioned media of SH-SY5Y expressing the Swedish mutation of APP containing a high ratio of Aβ40/42 peptides. Our results revealed significantly lower Aβ-induced cell toxicity in cells pre-treated with RGD peptide-PEGylated curcumin-loaded nanoliposomes, as compared to controls. Thus, our data highlight the potential use of salmon lecithin-derived RGD peptide PEGylated nanoliposomes for the efficient drug delivery of curcumin as a neuroprotective agent.

The fabrication of biodegradable, bioabsorbable, and biocompatible vascular scaffolds with enhanced mechanical and biological properties that are able to modulate local inflammation and induce endothelialization after surgical implant is still a challenge. In this work, a fibrous scaffold, made of poly(ε-caprolactone) and poly(glycerol sebacate), was fabricated to be potentially used as a small-diameter graft in vascular surgery. The novelty of this research is represented by the direct incorporation of quercetin, a well-known antioxidant compound with several biological properties, into a polymeric scaffold obtaining a vascular construct able to modulate two key factors involved in postsurgical inflammation, matrix metalloproteinase-9 and endothelial nitric oxide synthase. For its production, an electrospinning apparatus, a solution made of the two polymers (both 20% (w/v), mixed at the ratio 1:1 (v/v)), and free quercetin (0.05% (w/v)) were used. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopies were employed to investigate the morphological properties of the fabricated electrospun scaffolds. Furthermore, physicochemical properties, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, mass loss, fluid uptake, quercetin release, mechanical properties, and biological activity of the scaffolds were studied. The expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1, and of endothelial nitric oxide synthase was evaluated when the quercetin-functionalized scaffold was exposed to  human endothelial cells treated with tumor necrosis factor-α. There is a growing interest for complex in vitro environments that closely mimic the extracellular matrix and allow cells to grow in microenvironments that are closer to the one in vivo. Protein-based matrices and especially hydrogels can answer this need, thanks to their similarity with the cell microenvironment and their ease of customization. In this study, an experimental design was conducted to study the influence of synthesis parameters on the physical properties of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA). Temperature, ratio of methacrylic anhydride over gelatin, rate of addition, and stirring speed of the reaction were studied using a Doehlert matrix. Their impact on the following parameters was analyzed: degree of substitution, mass swelling ratio, storage modulus (log(G')), and compression modulus. This study highlights that the most impactful parameter was the ratio of methacrylic anhydride over gelatin. Although, temperature affected the degree of substitution, and methacrylic anhydride addition flow rate impacted the gel's physical properties, namely, its storage modulus and compression modulus. Moreover, this experimental design proposed a theoretical model that described the variation of GelMA's physical characteristics as a function of synthesis conditions.

Despite the exceptional progress in breast cancer pathogenesis, prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment strategies, it remains a prominent cause of female mortality worldwide. Additionally, although chemotherapies are effective, they are associated with critical limitations, most notably their lack of specificity resulting in systemic toxicity and the eventual development of multi-drug resistance (MDR) cancer cells. Liposomes have proven to be an invaluable drug delivery system but of the multitudes of liposomal systems developed every year only a few have been approved for clinical use, none of which employ active targeting. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most frequent case of neurodegenerative disease and is becoming a major public health problem all over the world. Many therapeutic strategies have been explored for several decades; however, there is still no curative treatment, and the priority remains prevention. In this review, we present an update on the clinical and physiological phase of the AD spectrum, modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for AD treatment with a focus on prevention strategies, then research models used in AD, followed by a discussion of treatment limitations. The prevention methods can significantly slow AD evolution and are currently the best strategy possible before the advanced stages of the disease. Indeed, current drug treatments have only symptomatic effects, and disease-modifying treatments are not yet available. Drug delivery to the central nervous system remains a complex process and represents a challenge for developing therapeutic and preventive strategies. Studies are underway to test new techniques to facilitate the bioavailability of molecules to the brain. After a deep study of the literature, we find the use of soft nanoparticles, in particular nanoliposomes and exosomes, as an innovative approach for preventive and therapeutic strategies in reducing the risk of AD and solving problems of brain bioavailability. Studies show the promising role of nanoliposomes and exosomes as smart drug delivery systems able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and target brain tissues. Finally, the different drug administration techniques for neurological disorders are discussed. One of the promising therapeutic methods is the intranasal administration strategy which should be used for preclinical and clinical studies of neurodegenerative diseases.

Hop ( Humulus lupulus L.) is a plant used as an ingredient in beer or employed for its anti-inflammatory properties. The cultivation of hops is currently dedicated to the brewing industry, where mainly female flowers are used, whereas aerial parts, such as leaves, are considered coproducts. Osteoarthritis is the most common musculoskeletal disease associated with low-grade cartilage inflammation. Liposomes have been shown to be promising systems for drug delivery to cartilage cells, called chondrocytes. The aim of our work was to vectorize hop extract valorized from coproducts as a therapeutic agent to alleviate inflammation in human chondrocytes in vitro. Liquid chromatography allowed the identification of oxidized bitter acids in a methanolic extract obtained from the leaves of Cascade hops. The extract was encapsulated in rapeseed lecithin nanoliposomes, and the physicochemical properties of empty or loaded nanoliposomes exhibited no difference. Increasing concentrations of the hop extract alone, empty nanoliposomes, and loaded nanoliposomes were tested on human chondrocytes to assess biocompatibility. The appropriate conditions were applied to chondrocytes stimulated with interleukin-1β to evaluate their effect on inflammation. The results reveal that encapsulation potentiates the hop extract anti-inflammatory effect and that it might be able to improve joint inflammation in osteoarthritis. Furthermore, these results also show that a "zero waste" chain is something that can be achieved in hop cultivation.

Soft nanoparticles, and in particular, nanoliposomes (NL), have attracted increasing interest for their use in food, nutraceuticals, and in particular, in pharmaceutics for drug delivery. Recent data using salmon lecithin NL suggest that these NL, rich in omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids, can improve the bioavailability and transport of molecules through the blood brain barrier (BBB) to target the brain for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. The objective of this study was to characterize the physicochemical properties and analyze the transfer phenomena of salmon lecithin NL over time in neurons to better understand the behavior of NL in an intracellular environment. To test this, primary cultures of cortical neurons from rat embryos were incubated with salmon lecithin NL from day 3 after cell culture, for up to 104 h. The physicochemical properties of NL such as size, speed, morphology and the diffusion coefficient in the live cultures, were studied over time. Image analysis of cell morphology showed dendritic growth and neuronal arborization after 48 h of exposure to NL, for up to 104 h. Results showed an NL stability in size, speed and diffusion coefficient over time, with a peak at 48 h, and then a return to baseline value at the end of incubation. The average speed and diffusion coefficient achieved provided important information on the mode of entry of NL into neurons, and on the slow diffusion rate of NL into the cells. Analysis of videos from 2 h to 104 h showed that significant levels of NL were already internalized by neurons after 3 h incubation. NL appearance and intracellular distribution indicated that they were packed in intracellular compartments similar to endocytic vesicles, suggesting internalization by an active endocytic-like process. The results obtained here demonstrate internalization of NL by cortical neurons by an active endocytic-like process, and suggest the potential use of NL for time-release of therapeutics aimed towards prevention or treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

In additive manufacturing, bioink formulations govern strategies to engineer 3D living tissues that mimic the complex architectures and functions of native tissues for successful tissue regeneration. Conventional 3D-printed tissues are limited in their ability to alter the fate of laden cells. Specifically, the efficient delivery of gene expression regulators (i.e. microRNAs (miRNAs)) to cells in bioprinted tissues has remained largely elusive. In this study, we explored the inclusion of extracellular vesicles (EVs), naturally occurring nanovesicles (NVs), into bioinks to resolve this challenge. EVs show excellent biocompatibility, rapid endocytosis, and low immunogenicity, which lead to the efficient delivery of miRNAs without measurable cytotoxicity. EVs were fused with liposomes to prolong and control their release by altering their physical interaction with the bioink. Hybrid EVs-liposome (hEL) NVs were embedded in gelatin-based hydrogels to create bioinks that could efficiently encapsulate and deliver miRNAs at the target site in a controlled and sustained manner. The regulation of cells' gene expression in a 3D bioprinted matrix was achieved using the hELs-laden bioink as a precursor for excellent shape fidelity and high cell viability constructs. In this study, a novel approach was investigated to improve the stability of anthocyanin compounds (AC) by encapsulating them in nanoliposomes resulting from rapeseed lecithin alongside chitosan coating. The results indicate that the particle size, electrophoretic mobility, encapsulation efficiency, and membrane fluidity of nanoliposomes containing anthocyanin compounds were 132.41 nm, -3.26 µm·cm/V·S, 42.57%, and 3.41, respectively, which changed into 188.95 nm, +4.80 µm·cm/V·S, 61.15%, and 2.39 after coating with chitosan, respectively. The results also suggest improved physical and chemical stability of nanoliposomes after coating with chitosan. TEM images demonstrate the produced particles were spherical and had a nanoscale, where the existence of a chitosan layer around the nanoparticles was visible. Shear rheological tests illustrate that the flow behavior of nanoliposomes was altered from Newtonian to shear thinning following chitosan incorporation. Further, chitosan diminished the surface area of the hysteresis loop (thixotropic behavior). The oscillatory rheological tests also show the presence of chitosan led to the improved mechanical stability of nanoliposomes. The results of the present study demonstrate that chitosan coating remarkably improved encapsulation efficiency, as well as the physical and mechanical stability of nanoliposomes. Thus, coating AC-nanoliposomes with chitosan is a promising approach for effective loading of AC and enhancing their stability to apply in the pharmaceutic and food industries.

Salmon byproducts ( Salmo salar ) generated by the food chain represent a source of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA): 20:5 n -3; docosahexaenoic acid (DHA): 22:6 n -3) and peptides that can be used as supplements in food for nutraceutical or health applications, such as in the prevention of certain pathologies (e.g., Alzheimer's and cardiovascular diseases). The extraction of polar lipids naturally rich in PUFAs by enzymatic processes without organic solvent (controlled by pH-Stat method), coupled with the production of 1 kDa salmon peptides by membrane filtration, allowed the formulation of nanocarriers. The physicochemical properties of the nanoliposomes (size ranging from 120 to 140 nm, PDI of 0.27, zeta potential between -32 and -46 mV and encapsulation efficiency) were measured, and the bioactivity of salmon hydrolysate peptides was assessed (antioxidant and antiradical activity: ABTS, ORAC, DPPH; iron metal chelation). Salmon peptides exhibited good angiotensin-conversion-enzyme (ACE) inhibition activity, with an IC 50 value of 413.43 ± 13.12 µg/mL. Cytotoxicity, metabolic activity and proliferation experiments demonstrated the harmlessness of the nanostructures in these experimental conditions.

The low efficiency in transfecting rat- and human-derived chondrocytes have been hampering developments in the field of cartilage biology. Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 has shown positive effects on chondrocytes, but its applications remain limited due to its short half-life, low stability and poor penetration into cartilage. Naturally derived liposomes have been shown to be promising delivery nanosystems due to their similarities with biological membranes. Here, we used agro-based rapeseed liposomes, which contains a high level of mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids, to efficiently deliver encapsulated TGF-β1 to rat chondrocytes. Results showed that TGF-β1 encapsulated in nano-sized rapeseed liposomes were safe for chondrocytes and did not induce any alterations of their phenotype. Furthermore, the controlled release of TGF-β1 from liposomes produced an improved response in chondrocytes, even at low doses. Altogether, these outcomes demonstrate that agro-based nanoliposomes are promising drug carriers.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) play an important role in the development, maintenance, and function of the brain. Dietary supplementation of n-3 PUFAs in neurological diseases has been a subject of particular interest in preventing cognitive deficits, and particularly in age-related neurodegeneration. Developing strategies for the efficient delivery of these lipids to the brain has presented a challenge in recent years. We recently reported the preparation of n-3 PUFA-rich nanoliposomes (NLs) from salmon lecithin, and demonstrated their neurotrophic effects in rat embryo cortical neurons. The objective of this study was to assess the ability of these NLs to deliver PUFAs in cellulo and in vivo (in mice). NLs were prepared using salmon lecithin rich in n-3 PUFAs (29.13%), and characterized with an average size of 107.90 ± 0.35 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.25 ± 0.01, and a negative particle-surface electrical charge (-50.4 ± 0.2 mV). Incubation of rat embryo cortical neurons with NLs led to a significant increase in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (51.5%, p < 0.01), as well as palmitic acid, and a small decrease in oleic acid after 72 h (12.2%, p < 0.05). Twenty mice on a standard diet received oral administration of NLs (12 mg/mouse/day; 5 days per week) for 8 weeks. Fatty acid profiles obtained via gas chromatography revealed significant increases in cortical levels of saturated, monounsaturated, and n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid,) and n-6 (docosapentaenoic acid and arachidonic acid) PUFAs. This was not the case for the hippocampus or in the liver. There were no effects on plasma lipid levels, and daily monitoring confirmed NL biocompatibility. These results demonstrate that NLs can be used for delivery of PUFAs to the brain. This study opens new research possibilities in the development of preventive as well as therapeutic strategies for age-related neurodegeneration.

Nanoencapsulation of saffron extract (SE) components into the rapeseed lecithin nanoliposomes were performed by sonication of their aqueous dispersions as a green process. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) results exhibited that empty and SE loaded nanoliposomes (SENL) had average sizes in range of 118-138 nm, negative zeta potentials (-32.0 to -46.8 mV) and polydispersity index (PDI) less than 0.3 during storage for 28 days at 4 °C. Encapsulation efficiency of crocin was approximately 30%. The 70% of crocin released from SENLs within 5 h in PBS solution. Pullulan-based films were fabricated by incorporation of empty and SE loaded nanoliposomes into pullulan solution through casting method. The mechanical resistance and thermal stability of the films reduced by addition of nanoliposomes. FTIR and thermal characterizations indicated that SE was successfully encapsulated in the nanoliposomes and film matrix with high thermal stability. Incorporation of nanoliposomes enhanced the oxygen barrier properties of the films, while it didn't significantly affect the water vapor permeability (WVP) of the films. The obtained edible films or coatings can provide additional benefits due to unique flavor and color of saffron. Polymeric hydrogels are currently at the center of research due to their particular characteristics. They have tunable physical, chemical, and biological properties making them a material of choice for a large range of applications. Polymer-composite and nanocomposite hydrogels were developed to enhance the native hydrogel's properties and to include numerous functionalities. In this work, alginate/gelatin-methacryloyl-based interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels were prepared with different alginate concentrations and investigated before and after the functionalization with nanoliposomes. The multiscale analysis was obtained through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance. The results show interactions between two polymers as well as between the nanoliposomes and biopolymer.

Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) is widely used for tissue engineering applications as an extracellular matrix (ECM) mimicking scaffold due to its cost-effectiveness, ease of synthesis, and high biocompatibility. GelMA is widely synthesized from porcine skin gelatin, which labors under clinical, religious, and economical restrictions. In order to overcome these limitations, GelMA can be produced from fish skin gelatin, which is eco-friendly as well. Here, we present a comparative study of the physicochemical (structural, thermal, water uptake, swelling, rheological, and mechanical) and biological (cell viability, proliferation, and spreading) properties of porcine and fish skin GelMA with low and high methacrylation degrees, before and after crosslinking, to check whether fish skin can replace porcine skin as the source of GelMA. Porcine and fish skin GelMA presented similar structural, thermal, and water uptake properties prior to crosslinking. However, subsequent to crosslinking, fish skin GelMA hydrogels exhibited a higher mass swelling ratio and a lower elastic and compressive Young's moduli than porcine skin GelMA hydrogels of similar methacrylation level. Both types of GelMA hydrogels showed great biocompatibility toward encapsulated mouse myoblast cells (C2C12), however, improved cell spreading was observed in fish skin GelMA hydrogels, and cell proliferation was only induced in low methacrylated GelMA. These results suggest that fish skin GelMA is a promising substitute for porcine skin GelMA for biomedical applications and that low methacrylated fish skin GelMA can be used as a potential scaffold for skeletal muscle tissue engineering., (Copyright © 2021. Natural hydrogels are one of the most promising biomaterials for tissue engineering applications, due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and extracellular matrix mimicking ability. To surpass the limitations of conventional fabrication techniques and to recapitulate the complex architecture of native tissue structure, natural hydrogels are being constructed using novel biofabrication strategies, such as textile techniques and three-dimensional bioprinting. These innovative techniques play an enormous role in the development of advanced scaffolds for various tissue engineering applications. The progress, advantages, and shortcomings of the emerging biofabrication techniques are highlighted in this review. A major impediment preventing normal wound healing is insufficient vascularization, which causes hypoxia, poor metabolic support, and dysregulated physiological responses to injury. To combat this, the delivery of angiogenic factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), has been shown to provide modest improvement in wound healing. Here, the importance of specialty delivery systems is explored in controlling wound bed drug distribution and consequently improving healing rate and quality. Two intradermal drug delivery systems, miniaturized needle arrays (MNAs) and liquid jet injectors (LJIs), are evaluated to compare effective VEGF delivery into the wound bed. The administered drug's penetration depth and distribution in tissue are significantly different between the two technologies. These systems' capability for efficient drug delivery is first confirmed in vitro and then assessed in vivo. While topical administration of VEGF shows limited effectiveness, intradermal delivery of VEGF in a diabetic murine model accelerates wound healing. To evaluate the translational feasibility of the strategy, the benefits of VEGF delivery using MNAs are assessed in a porcine model. The results demonstrate enhanced angiogenesis, reduced wound contraction, and increased regeneration. Self-aggregation of Curcumin (Cur) in aqueous biological environment decreases its bioavailability and in vivo therapeutic efficacy, which hampers its clinical use as candidate for reducing risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Here, we focused on the design of new Cur- β-Cyclodextrin nanoconjugates to improve the solubility and reduce cell toxicity of Cur. In this study, we described the synthesis, structural characterization, photophysical properties and neuron cell toxicity of two new water soluble β-CD/Cur nanoconjugates as new strategy for reducing risks of neurodegenerative diseases. Cur was coupled to one or two β-CD molecules via triazole rings using CuAAC click chemistry strategy to yield β-CD@Cur and (β-CD) 2 @Cur nanoconjugates, respectively. The synthesized nanoconjugates were found to be able to self-assemble in aqueous condition and form nano-aggregates of an average diameter size of around 35 and 120 nm for β-CD@Cur and (β-CD) 2 @Cur, respectively. The photophysical properties, water solubility and cell toxicity on rat embryonic cortical neurons of the designed nanoconjugates were investigated and compared to that of Cur alone. The findings revealed that both new nanoconjugates displayed better water solubility and in vitro biocompatibility than Cur alone, thus making it possible to envisage their use as future nano-systems for the prevention or risk reduction of neurodegenerative diseases.

In the present study, nanoliposomes composed of rapeseed lecithin were used for the encapsulation of anthocyanin compounds (AC). The nanoliposomes were prepared using hydration and ultrasound combined method, and the effect of AC concentration (4.5, 6.75, 9% w / w ) on the characteristics of nanoliposomes including particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential, and the encapsulation efficiency (EE) of nanoliposomes with and without AC were studied. The results suggested the fabricated nanoliposomes had a size range of 141-196 nm, negative zeta potential and narrow particle size distribution. Further, the samples containing 9% extract had the maximum EE (43%). The results showed elevation of AC concentration resulted in increased particle size, PDI, EE, and surface charge of nanoparticles. The presence of AC extract led to diminished membrane fluidity through the hydrophobic interactions with the hydrocarbon chain of fatty acids. TEM images suggested that the nanoliposomes were nearly spherical and the AC caused their improved sphericity. Further, in vitro biocompatibility tests for human mesenchymal (MSC) and fibroblast (FBL) cells indicated nanoparticles were not toxic. Specifically, the best formulations with the maximum compatibility and bioavailability for MSC and FBL cells were AC-loaded nanoliposomes with concentrations of 0.5 mL/mg and 10.3 mL/µg and, respectively.

The development of nanocomposite hydrogels that take advantage of hierarchic building blocks is gaining increased attention due to their added functionality and numerous biomedical applications. Gathering on the unique properties of these platforms, herein we report the synthesis of bioactive nanocomposite hydrogels comprising naringin-loaded salmon-derived lecithin nanosized liposomal building blocks and gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) macro-sized hydrogels for their embedding. This platform takes advantage of liposomes' significant drug loading capacity and their role in hydrogel network reinforcement, as well as of the injectability and light-mediated crosslinking of bioderived gelatin-based biomaterials. First, the physicochemical properties, as well as the encapsulation efficiency, release profile, and cytotoxicity of naringin-loaded nanoliposomes (LipoN) were characterized. Then, the effect of embedding LipoN in the GelMA matrix were characterized by studying the release behavior, swelling ratio, and hydrophilic character, as well as the rheological and mechanical properties of GelMA and GelMA-LipoN functionalized hydrogels. Finally, the dispersion of nanoliposomes encapsulating a model fluorescent probe in the GelMA matrix was visualized. The formulation of naringin-loaded liposomes via an optimized procedure yielded nanosized (114 nm) negatively charged particles with a high encapsulation efficiency (~99%). Naringin-loaded nanoliposomes administration to human adipose-derived stem cells confirmed their suitable cytocompatibility. Moreover, in addition to significantly extending the release of naringin from the hydrogel, the nanoliposomes inclusion in the GelMA matrix significantly increased its elastic and compressive moduli and decreased its swelling ratio, while showing an excellent dispersion in the hydrogel network. Overall, salmon-derived nanoliposomes enabled the inclusion and controlled release of pro-osteogenic bioactive molecules, as well as improved the hydrogel matrix properties, which suggests that these soft nanoparticles can play an important role in bioengineering bioactive nanocomposites for bone tissue engineering in the foreseeable future.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are important in reducing the risk for cardiovascular, metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. Chia ( Salvia hispanica L.) seeds contain high levels of omega-3 PUFA, α-linolenic acid (ALA) in particular, and are a potential source for development of omega-3 PUFA-based products. Our objective was to obtain and characterize chia seed lipids, focusing on phospholipid fraction, and to investigate their use in the formulation of nanoemulsions (NE) and nanoliposomes (NL). Solvent-based lipid extraction was performed on the ORURO variety of chia seeds, followed by lipid composition analysis using GC and LC-MS and physico-chemical characterization of chia NL and NE. Folch extraction led to a slightly higher yield of ALA as compared to Soxhlet extraction. Lipid, phospholipid, and fatty acid composition analysis of the oil and residue revealed that the residue was rich in phospholipids; these were used to prepare NE and NL. Physico-chemical characterization showed that NE and NL were generally spherical (transmission electron microscopy), with a size of <120 nm under hydrated conditions that remained stable over 5 days. In conclusion, chia oil and phospholipid-rich residue can be used to obtain stable NL or NE using a simple method that involves spontaneous emulsification during lipid hydration, which potentially may be useful in cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and other health applications.

Curcumin is a hydrophobic drug gaining growing attention because of its high availability, its innocuity, and its anticancer, antitumoral, and antioxidative activity. However, its poor ‎‎bioavailability in the human body, caused by its low aqueous solubility and fast degradation, ‎‎presents a big hurdle for its oral administration. Here, we used nano-vesicles made of ‎‎phospholipids to carry and protect curcumin in its membrane. Various curcumin amounts were ‎‎encapsulated in the produced phospholipid system to form drug-loaded liposomes. ‎Curcumin's ‎concentration was evaluated using UV-visible measurements. The maximal ‎amount of curcumin ‎that could be added to liposomes was assessed. Nuclear magnetic ‎resonance (NMR) analyses ‎were used to determine curcumin's interactions and localization ‎within the phospholipid ‎membrane of the liposomes. X-ray scattering (SAXS) and atomic ‎force microscopy (AFM) ‎experiments were performed to characterize the membrane structure ‎and organization, as well as its ‎mechanical properties at the nanoscale. Conservation of the membrane's properties is found with ‎the addition of curcumin in various ‎amounts before saturation, allowing the preparation of a ‎defined nanocarrier with desired ‎amounts of the drug.

Smart engineered and naturally derived nanovesicles, capable of targeting specific tissues and cells and delivering bioactive molecules and drugs into them, are becoming important drug delivery systems. Liposomes stand out among different types of self-assembled nanovesicles, because of their amphiphilicity and non-toxic nature. By modifying their surfaces, liposomes can become stimulus-responsive, releasing their cargo on demand. Recently, the recognized role of exosomes in cell-cell communication and their ability to diffuse through tissues to find target cells have led to an increase in their usage as smart delivery systems. Moreover, engineering "smarter" delivery systems can be done by creating hybrid exosome-liposome nanocarriers via membrane fusion. These systems can be loaded in naturally derived hydrogels to achieve sustained and controlled drug delivery. Here, the focus is on evaluating the smart behavior of liposomes and exosomes, the fabrication of hybrid exosome-liposome nanovesicles, and the controlled delivery and routes of administration of a hydrogel matrix for drug delivery systems.

To promote the nutritional and pharmacological values of four sea cucumber species ( Holothuria poli , H. tubulosa , H. arguinensis , and H. sanctori ), harvested from the Algerian coast, we aimed to study their proximate composition, fatty acid profile and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity. Their phospholipids were also used to elaborate nanoliposomes and to encapsulate peptides obtained from the same source. After the physico-chemical characterization of nanoliposomes and peptides, in vitro analyses were realized. The four holothurian species showed a high amount of protein (49.26-69.34%), and an impressive lipid profile of 27 fatty acids, mainly composed of polar fatty acids (91.16-93.85%), with a high polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content (50.90-71.80%), particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (5.07-8.76%) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (4.86-7.25%). A high phospholipids amount was also found (55.20-69.85%), mainly composed of phosphatidylcholine (PC) (51.48-58.56%). Their peptide fractions exhibited a high ACE inhibitory activity (IC 50 0.30 to 0.51 mg/mL). The results also showed that the nanoliposomes do not induce cytotoxicity and cell death in human MSCs and no perturbation of proliferation for all the times and the tested concentrations, as well as the combined nanoliposomes and hydrolysates (HTS) at a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL. Chitin is a structural polysaccharide of the cell walls of fungi and exoskeletons of insects and crustaceans . In this study, chitin was extracted, for the first time in our knowledge, from the Cicada orni sloughs of the south-eastern French Mediterranean basin by treatment with 1 M HCl for demineralization, 1 M NaOH for deproteinization, and 1% NaClO for decolorization. The different steps of extraction were investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results demonstrated that the extraction process was efficiently performed and that Cicada orni sloughs of the south-eastern French Mediterranean basin have a high content of chitin (42.8%) in the α-form with a high degree of acetylation of 96% ± 3.4%. These results make Cicada orni of the south-eastern French Mediterranean basin a new and promising source of chitin. Furthermore, we showed that each step of the extraction present specific characteristics (for example FTIR and XRD spectra and, consequently, distinct absorbance peaks and values of crystallinity as well as defined values of maximum degradation temperatures identifiable by TGA analysis) that could be used to verify the effectiveness of the treatments, and could be favorably compared with other natural chitin sources.

Investigations in cartilage biology have been hampered by the limited capacity of chondrocytes, especially in rats and humans, to be efficiently transfected. Liposomes are a promising delivery system due to their lipid bilayer structure similar to a biological membrane. Here we used natural rapeseed lecithin, which contains a high level of mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids, to evaluate the cytocompatibility of these phospholipids as future potential carriers of biomolecules in joint regenerative medicine. Results show that appropriate concentrations of nanoliposome rapeseed lecithin under 500 µg/mL were safe for chondrocytes and did not induce any alterations of their phenotype. Altogether, these results sustain that they could represent a novel natural carrier to deliver active substances into cartilage cells.

Current anticancer drugs exhibit limited efficacy and initiate severe side effects. As such, identifying bioactive anticancer agents that can surpass these limitations is a necessity. One such agent, curcumin, is a polyphenolic compound derived from turmeric, and has been widely investigated for its potential anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects over the last 40 years. However, the poor bioavailability of curcumin, caused by its low absorption, limits its clinical use. In order to solve this issue, in this study, curcumin was encapsulated in chitosan-coated nanoliposomes derived from three natural lecithin sources. Liposomal formulations were all in the nanometric scale (around 120 nm) and negatively charged (around -40 mV). Among the three lecithins, salmon lecithin presented the highest growth-inhibitory effect on MCF-7 cells (two times lower growth than the control group for 12 µM of curcumin and four times lower for 20 µM of curcumin). The soya and rapeseed lecithins showed a similar growth-inhibitory effect on the tumor cells. Moreover, coating nanoliposomes with chitosan enabled a higher loading efficiency of curcumin (88% for coated liposomes compared to 65% for the non-coated liposomes) and a stronger growth-inhibitory effect on MCF-7 breast cancer cells.

Breast cancer is the leading ‎cause of death from cancer ‎among women. Higher ‎consumption ‎of ‎dietary ‎marine n-3 long-chain ‎polyunsaturated fatty acids ‎‎(LC-PUFAs) is associated ‎with a ‎‎lower risk of breast ‎cancer. Eicosapentaenoic ‎acid (EPA) and ‎docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ‎‎are ‎two n-3 LC-PUFAs found ‎in fish and exert anticancer ‎effects. In this study, ‎natural ‎marine-‎derived ‎lecithin that is rich in ‎various polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was extracted ‎from salmon heads and ‎‎transformed ‎into ‎nanoliposomes. These ‎nanoliposomes were ‎characterized and cultured ‎with ‎two breast ‎cancer ‎lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-‎‎231). The nanoliposomes ‎decreased the ‎proliferation ‎and ‎the stiffness of both ‎cancer cell types. Nanoliposomes are widely used as delivery vehicles for active compounds. Nanoliposomes from rapeseed phospholipids were incorporated into interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels of gelatin methacryloyl and alginate. The multiscale physicochemical properties of the hydrogels are studied both on the surface and through the thickness of the 3D network. The obtained composite hydrogels exhibited strong mechanical properties and a highly porous surface. The blend ratio, as well as the concentration of nanoliposomes, affects the properties of the hydrogels. Nanofunctionalized hydrogels induced keratinocyte ​growth. Tissue engineering has emerged as an important research area that provides numerous research tools for the fabrication of biologically functional constructs that can be used in drug discovery, disease modeling, and the treatment of diseased or injured organs. From a materials point of view, scaffolds have become an important part of tissue engineering activities and are usually used to form an environment supporting cellular growth, differentiation, and maturation. Among various materials used as scaffolds, hydrogels based on natural polymers are considered one of the most suitable groups of materials for creating tissue engineering scaffolds. Natural hydrogels, however, do not always provide the physicochemical and biological characteristics and properties required for optimal cell growth. This review discusses the properties and tissue engineering applications of widely used natural hydrogels. Lipids play multiple roles in preserving neuronal function and synaptic plasticity, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been of particular interest in optimizing synaptic membrane organization and function. We developed a green-based methodology to prepare nanoliposomes (NL) from lecithin that was extracted from fish head by-products. These NL range between 100-120 nm in diameter, with an n-3/n-6 fatty acid ratio of 8.88. The high content of n-3 PUFA (46.3% of total fatty acid content) and docosahexanoic acid (26%) in these NL represented a means for enrichment of neuronal membranes that are potentially beneficial for neuronal growth and synaptogenesis. To test this, the primary cultures of rat embryo cortical neurons were incubated with NL on day 3 post-culture for 24 h, followed by immunoblots or immunofluorescence to evaluate the NL effects on synaptogenesis, axonal growth, and dendrite formation. The results revealed that NL-treated cells displayed a level of neurite outgrowth and arborization on day 4 that was similar to those of untreated cells on day 5 and 6, suggesting accelerated synapse formation and neuronal development in the presence of NL. We propose that fish-derived NL, by virtue of their n-3 PUFA profile and neurotrophic effects, represent a new innovative bioactive vector for developing preventive or curative treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.

Extracellular matrix (ECM) cues have been widely investigated for their impact on cellular behavior. Among mechanics, physics, chemistry, and topography, different ECM properties have been discovered as important parameters to modulate cell functions, activating mechanotransduction pathways that can influence gene expression, proliferation or even differentiation. Particularly, ECM topography has been gaining more and more interest based on the evidence that these physical cues can tailor cell behavior. Here, an overview of bottom-up and top-down approaches reported to produce materials capable of mimicking the ECM topography and being applied for biomedical purposes is provided. Moreover, the increasing motivation of using the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique to reproduce these topographical cues is highlighted. LbL assembly is a versatile methodology used to coat materials with a nanoscale fidelity to the geometry of the template or to produce multilayer thin films composed of polymers, proteins, colloids, or even cells. Different geometries, sizes, or shapes on surface topography can imply different behaviors: effects on the cell adhesion, proliferation, morphology, alignment, migration, gene expression, and even differentiation are considered. Curcumin, a natural polyphenol, has many biological properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-carcinogenic properties, yet, its sensitivity to light, oxygen, and heat, and its low solubility in water renders its preservation and bioavailability challenging. To increase its bioaccessibility, we fabricated nanoliposomes and chitosan-coated nanoliposomes encapsulating curcumin, and we evaluated the systems in terms of their physicochemical characteristics and release profiles in simulated gastrointestinal mediums. Chitosan-coating enhanced the stability of nanoliposomes and slowed the release of curcumin in the simulated gastrointestinal (GI) environment. This study demonstrates that nanoliposomes and chitosan-coated nanoliposomes are promising carriers for poorly soluble lipophilic compounds with low oral bioavailability, such as curcumin.

Traditional wound dressings are not effective enough to regulate the moisture content and remove excessive exudate from the environment. Wet wound dressings formed from hydrogels such as alginate are widely used in clinical practice for treatment of skin disorders. Here, we functionalize alginate dressings with natural antioxidants such as curcumin and t-resveratrol to render them both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. The hydrogel maintains excellent mechanical properties and oxygen permeability over time. The release rate of the compounds from the hydrogels is assessed and their impact on bacterial and cellular growth is evaluated. The antioxidant compounds act as bactericidal agents and improve cell viability. The optimal concentration of active compounds in the engineered alginate-based dressings is determined.

Emulsion-based delivery systems have been developed to increase the topical bioavailability of lipophilic active compounds within skin membrane. The aim was to develop nanoemulsion from natural sources (rapeseed oil) with the same sources of pure phospholipids (lecithin) rich on mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids for encapsulation of hydrophobic antioxidant (Coenzyme Q 10 ) giving nanoemulsion with double functionality. Nanoemulsions were used for cream preparation using xanthan gum and carboxylmethylcellulose as texturizing agents. The physico-chemical properties, toxicity and biocompatibility were evaluated. Physical stability was followed under different storage temperatures (25; 37 and 50 °C) for one month and revealed stable systems with 150 nm particle size. Anionic thickening addition influenced the electrophoretic mobility but not the size distribution. The addition of polyanionic thickening in nanoemulsions promoted negative surface charge that increased electrostatic repulsive forces between droplets avoiding destabilization phenomena such as coalescence and Ostwald ripening. Moreover, chemical stability evaluation of components confirmed the absence of interactions. FTIR analysis indicated the vibration band position of cis double stretching of unsaturated fatty acids between 3009 and 3006 cm -1 , which characterized the non-oxidized oils with same intensities before and after sonication. Antioxidants measurement shown that CMC significantly reduced antioxidant activity due to masking action of CoQ10 functional groups by the carboxylmethylcellulose gum conversely to xanthan gum addition. Finally, in vitro biocompatibility results shown that CoQ10 protected the DNA, and xanthan gum improve glucose metabolism inducing a better cell growth, while carboxymethylcellulose which was not metabolized by fibroblast cell inducing lower growth rate., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is a natural bioactive compound with many health-promoting benefits. However, its poor water solubility and bioavailability has limited curcumin&rsquo;s biomedical application. In the present study, we encapsulated curcumin into liposomes, formed from natural sources (salmon lecithin), and characterized its encapsulation efficiency and release profile. The proposed natural carriers increased the solubility and the bioavailability of curcumin. In addition, various physico-chemical properties of the developed soft nanocarriers with and without curcumin were studied. Nanoliposome-encapsulated curcumin increased the viability and network formation in the culture of primary cortical neurons and decreased the rate of apoptosis.

Novel bioactive films were developed from the incorporation of Lactococcus lactis into polysaccharide films. Two different biopolymers were tested: cellulose derivative (hydroxylpropylmethylcellulose (HPMC)) and corn starch. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) free or previously encapsulated in alginate-pectin composite hydrogel microbeads were added directly to the film forming solution and films were obtained by casting. In order to study the impact of the incorporation of the protective culture into the biopolymer matrix, the water vapour permeability, oxygen permeability, optical and mechanical properties of the dry films were evaluated. Furthermore, the antimicrobial effect of bioactive films against Listeria monocytogenes was studied in synthetic medium. Results showed that the addition of LAB or alginate-pectin microbeads modified slightly films optical properties. In comparison with HPMC films, starch matrix proves to be more sensitive to the addition of bacterial cells or beads. Indeed, mechanical resistance of corn starch films was lower but barrier properties were improved, certainly related to the possible establishment of interactions between alginate-pectin beads and starch. HPMC and starch films containing encapsulated bioactive culture showed a complete inhibition of listerial growth during the first five days of storage at 5 °C and a reduction of 5 logs after 12 days., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

Background: Pregnancy is one of the most important periods of a woman's life and is influenced by many different factors. For years, it was assumed that teenage pregnancy can cause poor pregnancy outcome. The purpose of this study was to compare some pregnancy complications between 2 groups of 15 to 19 and 20 to 35 year- old primigravida pregnant women Methods: This was a cross- sectional study conducted on the data sheets of primigravida women who delivered their babies in a teaching hospital. A total of 3040 eligible women entered the study; of them, 280 (9.3%) were in the 15 to 19 years age group and 2756 in the 20 to 35 years age group. The 2 groups were compared for preeclampsia, PROM, preterm birth, SGA, placental abruption, and placenta previa. A logistic regression model was used for data analysis. Results: The women of the 2 groups significantly differed in BMI and socioeconomic background. The rate of preeclampsia (p=0.008), PROM (p=0.002), and preterm delivery (p=0.001) were less in the 15 to 19 years age group. The rate of placental abruption, placenta previa, IUFD, and SGA was not significantly different between the 2 groups. After multivariate regression analysis, preeclampsia (adjusted odd ratio= 2.157; 95% CI= 1.38- 4.21) and preterm delivery (adjusted odd ratio= 2.443; 95% CI= 1.78- 5.13) were found to be higher in the 20 to 35 years group. Conclusion: The risk of poor pregnancy outcome is not higher in teenage pregnancies compared to pregnancies in the 20 to 35 years age group if confounding factors, including socioeconomic factors, are carefully controlled.

Given the importance of the extracellular medium during tissue formation, it was wise to develop an artificial structure that mimics the extracellular matrix while having improved physico-chemical properties. That is why the choice was focused on gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), an inexpensive biocompatible hydrogel. Physicochemical and mechanical properties were improved by the incorporation of nanoparticles developed from two innovative fabrication processes: High shear fluid and low frequencies/high frequencies ultrasounds. Both rapeseed nanoliposomes and nanodroplets were successfully incorporated in the GelMA networks during the photo polymerization process. The impact on polymer microstructure was investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and enzymatic degradation investigations. Mechanical stability and viscoelastic tests were conducted to demonstrate the beneficial effect of the functionalization on GelMA hydrogels. Adding nanoparticles to GelMA improved the surface properties (porosity), tuned swelling, and degradability properties. In addition, we observed that nanoemulsion didn't change significantly the mechanical properties to shear and compression solicitations, whereas nanoliposome addition decreased Young's modulus under compression solicitations. Thus, these ways of functionalization allow controlling the design of the material by choosing the type of nanoparticle (nanoliposome or nanoemulsion) in function of the application., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
