Abstract

We study the Maker-Maker version of the domination game introduced in 2018 by Duch\^ene et al. Given a graph, two players alternately claim vertices. The first player to claim a dominating set of the graph wins. As the Maker-Breaker version, this game is PSPACE-complete on split and bipartite graphs. Our main result is a linear time algorithm to solve this game in forests. We also give a characterization of the cycles where the first player has a winning strategy.

Abstract

Positional games have been introduced by Hales and Jewett in 1963 and have been extensively investigated in the literature since then. These games are played on a hypergraph where two players alternately select an unclaimed vertex of it. In the Maker-Breaker convention, if Maker manages to fully take a hyperedge, she wins, otherwise, Breaker is the winner. In the Maker-Maker convention, the first player to take a hyperedge wins. In both cases, the game stops as soon as Maker has taken a hyperedge. By definition, this family of games does not handle scores and cannot represent games in which players want to maximize a quantity. In this work, we introduce scoring positional games, that consist in playing on a hypergraph until all the vertices are claimed, and by defining the score as the number of hyperedges a player has fully taken. We focus here on Incidence, a scoring positional game played on a 2-uniform hypergraph, i.e. an undirected graph. In this game, two players alternately claim the vertices of a graph and score the number of edges for which they own both end vertices. In the Maker-Breaker version, Maker aims at maximizing the number of edges she owns, while Breaker aims at minimizing it. In the Maker-Maker version, both players try to take more edges than their opponent. We first give some general results on scoring positional games such that their membership in Milnor's universe and some general bounds on the score. We prove that, surprisingly, computing the score in the Maker-Breaker version of Incidence is PSPACE-complete whereas in the Maker-Maker convention, the relative score can be obtained in polynomial time. In addition, for the Maker-Breaker convention, we give a formula for the score on paths by using some equivalences due to Milnor's universe. This result implies that the score on cycles can also be computed in polynomial time.

Abstract

Vitis spp., both in their cultivated and wild forms, have been growing in a large diversity of environments for thousands of years. As a result, they have developed many adaptive mechanisms controlled by a range of regulatory processes. The cultivated species, Vitis vinifera, is quite well adapted to semi-arid conditions and its cultivation can be used to produce crops on marginal lands. However, this is threatened by climate change, which is associated with increased temperature and CO2 atmospheric content, changes in water availability and an increased likelihood of extreme events, such as heat waves and early spring frosts. Indirect effects of climate change on solar radiation and soil minerals are also expected. Consequently, cultivated grapevines will presumably face more abiotic constraints occurring concomitantly or successively over one or more growing cycles. In addition to climate change, worldwide viticulture must reduce the use of pesticides. Adapting to climate change and reducing pesticide use are challenging, and increase the need to create new grapevine varieties that are more resistant to diseases and better adapted to abiotic constraints. For this purpose, the adaptive mechanisms of wild and cultivated Vitis spp. must be exploited. While major advances have already been made in exploiting wild alleles for disease resistance, the polygenic nature of adaptation to abiotic factors has slowed down research progress. To tackle this limitation, ambitious integrative strategies need to be undertaken from collection and characterization of genetic resources, investigations on genetic architecture and identification of underlying genes (including those involved in epigenetic regulation), to the implementation of new breeding technologies and the development of genomic selection. Abstract

Taking into account the major economical role and specificities of the French wine industry, adaptation to climate change is a very challenging issue. In 2011, 23 research teams launched a systemic and multidisciplinary program to analyze the impacts from the vine to the region, to define adaptation strategies combining technical, spatial and organizational options and to evaluate the perception by the actors and consumers of climate change issues. Thermal variability was studied at local scale to develop high resolution atmospheric models which better simulate future climate trends. Impacts on growth/developmental conditions and vine responses were estimated from the calculation of eco-climatic indices and a combination of functional models. Genetic and physiological bases of grapevine adaptation to high temperature and drought were analyzed. Improving oenological and cultural practices as well as plant material innovation have been investigated as major technical adaptations. How these options could be implemented at the plot level was examined to elaborate decision tools. Multi-agent modelling was developed for this purpose. Surveys were performed to evaluate the perception of the main actors regarding climate change and their level of acceptability towards technical changes. Consumer acceptability of new types of wines was also investigated with an experimental economy approach. Finally a foresight exercise was conducted to design four potential adaptation strategies: conservative, innovative, nomad and liberal. Outcomes of this exercise are now used as a tool for wine industry members to develop their own strategic plan for adaptation.

Abstract

The current challenges of the agronomic research and in particular the adaptation of agriculture to climate change, require a very broad disciplinary mobilization. To meet these challenges, which go beyond its disciplinary and territorial organization, the INRA initiated a new system of interdisciplinary piloting of research. Thus, the métaprogramme ACCAF is trying to understand the joint effects of the various modifications caused by climate change on terrestrial farming and natural environments, and to define adaptation strategies of adaptation as well as their environmental and socio-economic consequences. Within this framework, twenty-three research laboratories have been collaborating in the project LACCAVE and united their efforts in the project LACCAVE in order to examine the effects of climate change on the vine and wine sector. In addition to six disciplinary working groups, this project is made up of an interdisciplinary group including researchers and experts of public institution working with the sector, which has carried out a foresight exercise. By directing the reflection towards a medium-long term future (2030–2050), this prospective exercise authorizes us to leave the temporal horizon of the negotiation and the dictatorship of emergency. As the long-term future is neither known nor recognizable, the evolutions are considered as combinations of assumptions expressed in one potential form and its opposite. For the prospective in the LACCAVE program, four strategies of adaptation of viticulture for 2030–2050 were predefined and a collective and pluridisciplinary work made possible the writing of a plausible way of events leading to each strategy. These results will then be used to debate with the actors of the wine sector at various geographical levels, in order to contribute to the development and the consolidation of choices of strategies of adaptation of the vineyards to climate change. The presentation will focus on this original methodology and its specific implementation. Abstract

A multidisciplinary group of researchers and experts of public bodies working on the French wine sector met together to elaborate a foresight exercice with the construction of the plausible ways leading to four different adaptation strategies to climate change of the French wine sector to climate change. For the implementation of this work, the group, considered a single climatic scenario and - difined four strategies of adaptation incorporating both geographical mobility and of integration of technological changes, - used assumptions from three sources: assumptions from researchers of various disciplines in their own disciplinary field, pre-existing assumptions from former foresight works and assumptions defined according to the statements of actors of the sector on the impacts of climate change and on the possible methods of adaptation. All these assumptions were written in the form of simple sentences, giving one version and its contrary. The various assumptions were selected and then combined between them in order to create a blend within the disciplinary fields, without however inferring of orientation. The result of this work is the join-construction of four plausible ways each one leading to one of the four preselected strategies of adaptation: “conservative” strategy where the evolutions are limited, a “nomade” strategy where the relocalisation of the vineyards is the main vector of adaptation, an “innovating” strategy where the adaptation is the result of the systematic integration of innovations, and finally towards a “liberal” strategy largely opened to any kind of changes. These ways and strategies are not supposed to give a predictive image of the future. However while proposing possible or plausible futures, this work provides material which could be debated within the sector, without immediate challenges that could possibly bias the discussion From the expression of the challenges and consequences of the various ways and strategies in which they result, the actors of the French wine sector will be able to start a strategic reflection. The presentation will be focused on the description of the four ways leading to adaptation strategies and their elaboration. Methodology is specified in another article “Adaptation to the climate change: interest of a prospective approach”, same authors.

Abstract

We introduce the game influence , a scoring combinatorial game, played on a directed graph where each vertex is either colored black or white. The two players, Black and White, play alternately by taking a vertex of their color and all its successors (for Black) or all its predecessors (for White). The score of each player is the number of vertices he has taken. We prove that influence is a nonzugzwang game, meaning that no player has interest to pass at any step of the game, and thus belongs to Milnor's universe. We study this game in the particular class of paths where black and white vertices are alternated. We give an almost tight strategy for both players when there is one path. More precisely, we prove that the first player always gets a strictly better score than the second one, but that the difference between the scores is bounded by 5. Finally, we exhibit some graphs for which the initial proportion of vertices of the color of a player is as small as possible but where this player can get almost all the vertices. Abstract

Cytochromes P450 are enzymes that participate in a wide range of functions in plants, from hormonal signaling and biosynthesis of structural polymers, to defense or communication with other organisms. They represent one of the largest gene/protein families in the plant kingdom. The manual annotation of cytochrome P450 genes in the genome of Vitis vinifera PN40024 revealed 579 P450 sequences, including 279 complete genes. Most of the P450 sequences in grapevine genome are organized in physical clusters, resulting from tandem or segmental duplications. Although most of these clusters are small (2 to 35, median = 3), some P450 families, such as CYP76 and CYP82, underwent multiple duplications and form large clusters of homologous sequences. Analysis of gene expression revealed highly specific expression patterns, which are often the same within the genes in large physical clusters. Some of these genes are induced upon biotic stress, which points to their role in plant defense, whereas others are specifically activated during grape berry ripening and might be responsible for the production of berry-specific metabolites, such as aroma compounds. Our work provides an exhaustive and robust annotation including clear identification, structural organization, evolutionary dynamics and expression patterns for the grapevine cytochrome P450 families, paving the way to efficient functional characterization of genes involved in grapevine defense pathways and aroma biosynthesis.

Abstract

Partizan subtraction games are combinatorial games where two players, say Left and Right, alternately remove a number n of tokens from a heap of tokens, with n 2 SL (resp. n 2 SR) when it is Left's (resp. Right's) turn. The first player unable to move loses. These games were introduced by Fraenkel and Kotzig in 1987, where they introduced the notion of dominance, i.e., an asymptotic behavior of the outcome sequence where Left always wins if the heap is sufficiently large. In the current paper, we investigate the other kinds of behaviors for the outcome sequence. In addition to dominance, three other disjoint behaviors are defined, namely weak dominance, fairness and ultimate impartiality. We consider the problem of computing this behavior with respect to SL and SR, which is connected to the well-known Frobenius coin problem. Abstract

This work is a contribution to the study of rewrite games. Positions are finite words, and the possible moves are defined by a finite number of local rewriting rules {ui→vi}i∈I : a move consists in the substitution of one occurrence of ui by vi, for some i. We introduce and investigate taking-and-merging games, that is, where each rule is of the form αk→∈. We give sufficient conditions for a game to be such that the losing positions (resp. the positions with a given Grundy value) form a regular language or a context-free language. We formulate several related open questions in parallel with the famous conjecture of Guy about the periodicity of the Grundy function of octal games. Finally we show that more general rewrite games quickly lead to undecidable problems. Namely, it is undecidable whether there exists a winning position in a given regular language, even if we restrict to games where each move strictly reduces the length of the current position. Abstract

International audience; Climate change is modifying the environmental conditions in all the vineyards across the world. The expected effects on grape and wine production can be positive in some grape growing regions but under warmer or dryer conditions the volume and quality of the wines produced can be impaired. Adaptation to new climatic conditions include changes in the cultivation areas, changes in the vineyard or cellar practices, or use of new rootstock x scion combinations. In this review, we will provide a quick overview of the possible effects of climate change on grapevine physiology and berry quality and we will describe the more important traits and the genetic variability that can be used in the adaptation process. We will also present the modern techniques that can beused by researchers to identify the links between genomic information and behaviors in the field. Finally, we will discuss on the existing opportunities in the present grapevine collections and on the strategies that can be used by breeders to create new varieties.

Abstract

The game of nim, with its simple rules, its elegant solution and its historical importance is the quintessence of a combinatorial game, which is why it led to so many generalizations and modifications. We present a modification with a new spin: building nim. With given finite numbers of tokens and stacks, this two-player game is played in two stages (thus belonging to the same family of games as e.g. nine-men's morris): first building, where players alternate to put one token on one of the, initially empty, stacks until all tokens have been used. Then, the players play nim. Of course, because the solution for the game of nim is known, the goal of the player who starts nim play is a placement of the tokens so that the Nim-sum of the stack heights at the end of building is different from 0. This game is trivial if the total number of tokens is odd as the Nim-sum could never be 0, or if both the number of tokens and the number of stacks are even, since a simple mimicking strategy results in a Nim-sum of 0 after each of the second player's moves. We present the solution for this game for some non-trivial cases and state a general conjecture.

Abstract

International audience; Background and Aims: The acidity of harvested grapevine berries is likely to decrease in the future because of increasing temperature during grape ripening. The aim of the study was to evaluate the genetic variability of berry acidity descriptors in progeny from a Riesling x Gewurztraminer cross. Methods and Results: The ripening process for the parent cultivars was monitored over three growing seasons; berries from Riesling had a higher tartaric acid concentration than that from Gewurztraminer, and a similar difference was observed for malic acid. A statistical model describing the decline in malic acid concentration over time was fitted to the data. With this model, the parameter that best characterised the two genotypes was the asymptotic minimum value of malic acid concentration per g of berry dry matter. In addition, the rate of decrease of malic acid was constant across years when thermal-time scales were used. Using samples of green berries at veraison and samples picked 230 degree days after veraison (mean temperature, base 10 degrees C), 120 genotypes from a Riesling x Gewurztraminer progeny were compared over 3 years in the vineyard and segregations for all the berry acidity descriptors were described. Conclusions: A significant genotypic variability was observed for the concentration of malic and tartaric acids but also for the estimated cationic content of the berries for the same developmental stage. No genotypes, however, were detected, with a concentration of total malic and tartaric acid significantly higher than that of Riesling. Significance of the Study: These results show that berry acidity descriptors are heritable traits that can be manipulated in breeding programs.
