Abstract

Engineered dissipative reservoirs can steer many-body quantum systems toward correlated steady states useful for quantum simulation of high-temperature superconductivity or quantum magnetism. Using 49 superconducting qubits, we prepare low-energy states of the transverse-field Ising model via coupling to dissipative auxiliary qubits. In 1D, we observe long-range quantum correlations and a ground state fidelity that depends weakly on system sizes. In 2D, we find mutual information that extends beyond nearest neighbors. Lastly, by coupling the system to auxiliaries emulating reservoirs with different chemical potentials, we discover a new spin transport regime in the quantum Heisenberg model. Our results establish engineered dissipation as a scalable alternative to unitary evolution for preparing entangled many-body states on noisy quantum processors, and an essential tool for investigating nonequilibrium quantum phenomena.

Abstract

Quantum computers hold the promise of executing tasks beyond the capability of classical computers. Noise competes with coherent evolution and destroys long-range correlations, making it an outstanding challenge to fully leverage the computation power of near-term quantum processors. We report Random Circuit Sampling (RCS) experiments where we identify distinct phases driven by the interplay between quantum dynamics and noise. Using cross-entropy benchmarking, we observe phase boundaries which can define the computational complexity of noisy quantum evolution. We conclude by presenting an RCS experiment with 70 qubits at 24 cycles. We estimate the computational cost against improved classical methods and demonstrate that our experiment is beyond the capabilities of existing classical supercomputers.

Abstract

Indistinguishability of particles is a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics1. For all elementary and quasiparticles observed to date—including fermions, bosons and Abelian anyons—this principle guarantees that the braiding of identical particles leaves the system unchanged2,3. However, in two spatial dimensions, an intriguing possibility exists: braiding of non-Abelian anyons causes rotations in a space of topologically degenerate wavefunctions4–8. Hence, it can change the observables of the system without violating the principle of indistinguishability. Despite the well-developed mathematical description of non-Abelian anyons and numerous theoretical proposals9–22, the experimental observation of their exchange statistics has remained elusive for decades. Controllable many-body quantum states generated on quantum processors offer another path for exploring these fundamental phenomena. Whereas efforts on conventional solid-state platforms typically involve Hamiltonian dynamics of quasiparticles, superconducting quantum processors allow for directly manipulating the many-body wavefunction by means of unitary gates. Building on predictions that stabilizer codes can host projective non-Abelian Ising anyons9,10, we implement a generalized stabilizer code and unitary protocol23 to create and braid them. This allows us to experimentally verify the fusion rules of the anyons and braid them to realize their statistics. We then study the prospect of using the anyons for quantum computation and use braiding to create an entangled state of anyons encoding three logical qubits. Our work provides new insights about non-Abelian braiding and, through the future inclusion of error correction to achieve topological protection, could open a path towards fault-tolerant quantum computing.A unitary protocol for braiding projective non-Abelian Ising anyons in a generalized stabilizer code is implemented on a superconducting processor, allowing for verification of their fusion rules and realization of their exchange statistics. Abstract

Single-cell technologies offer an unprecedented opportunity to effectively characterize cellular heterogeneity in health and disease. Nevertheless, visualisation and interpretation of these multi-dimensional datasets remains a challenge. We present a novel framework, ivis, for dimensionality reduction of single-cell expression data. ivis utilizes a siamese neural network architecture that is trained using a novel triplet loss function. Results on simulated and real datasets demonstrate that ivis preserves global data structures in a low-dimensional space, adds new data points to existing embeddings using a parametric mapping function, and scales linearly to hundreds of thousands of cells. ivis is made publicly available through Python and R interfaces on https://github.com/beringresearch/ivis.

Abstract

The effects of structural supermodulation with the period $\lambda \approx26$ \AA \ along the $b$-axis of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ have been observed in photoemission studies from the early days as the presence of diffraction replicas of the intrinsic electronic structure. Although predicted to affect the electronic structure of the Cu-O plane, the influence of supermodulation potential on Cu-O electrons has never been observed in photoemission. In the present study, we clearly see, for the first time, the effects on the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ electronic structure - we observe a hybridization of the intrinsic bands with the supermodulation replica bands in the form of avoided crossings and a corresponding reconstruction of the Fermi surface. We estimate the hybridization gap, $2\Delta_h\sim25$ meV in the slightly underdoped samples. The hybridization weakens with doping and the anti-crossing can no longer be resolved in strongly overdoped samples. In contrast, the shadow replica, shifted by $(\pi, \pi)$, is found not to hybridize with the original bands within our detection limits., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

In high-temperature cuprate superconductors, the anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are thought to have a very important role in naturally producing an attractive interaction between the electrons in the d-wave channel. The connection between superconductivity and spin fluctuations is expected to be especially consequential at the overdoped end point of the superconducting dome. In some materials, that point seems to coincide with a Lifshitz transition, where the Fermi surface changes from the hole-like centered at to the electron-like, centered at the Γ point causing a loss of large momentum anti-ferromagnetic fluctuations. Here, we study the doping dependence of the electronic structure of Bi1.8Pb0.4Sr2CuO in angle-resolved photoemission and find that the superconductivity vanishes at lower doping than that at which the Lifshitz transition occurs. This requires a more detailed re-examination of a spin fluctuation scenario. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
