Abstract

The vulnerability and viability of industries due to negative impacts of climate change are clear, and ultimately the future of work will be reshaped. Traditionally unions have focused on wages and conditions but there is an increasing call for unions to be at the core of future decisions regarding the climate change response. This article draws on a two-stage project which explored the views of union leaders on union preparedness to climate change and also a survey of union members on their expectations of their unions to the issue. While there is a high level of concern about climate change there has been a sluggish response from unions and a significant gap between the unions' position and the expressed belief from members that unions need to take an active role on climate change. Members indicated low collective efficacy in their unions to step into leadership roles. We offer several reasons for these findings and suggest ways forward. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This conceptual article calls for a greater recognition of wages in academic and media discussions of hospitality and tourism employment. The article draws on the New Zealand hospitality and tourism context, but places the discussion in an international perspective as well. The article approaches the topic of low wages in a new way, arguing that rather than being an inevitable outcome of structural factors, improving wages can be an 'engine' for reducing turnover and becoming employers of choice, and significantly improving employees lives. The article conceptualizes a 'hospitable wage', defined as a wage that incorporates genuine care and consideration of well-being for a level of care that hospitality employers would expect their staff to apply to guests. The concept of a hospitable wage is differentiated from the constructs of minimum wage, fair wage and the living wage. The article concludes by proposing that the Living Wage Movement is a practical and pragmatic way to operationalize a hospitable wage and thereby potentially improve conditions for employers and employees alike. Abstract

While the aged-care workforce undertakes a core societal role, it is a job with some challenges including working with difficult clients. This study focuses on physical and verbal abuse of aged-care employees in the home and community sector, and its relationship with work demands, training and employee outcomes. It extends the job demands-resources model into the seldom studied areas of aged-care work in the home and community sector and the issue of abuse from clients. This study uses structural equation modelling to test a mediated model with a sample of 574 aged-care employees and finds that training is highly beneficial, enhancing job satisfaction and decreasing incidences of abuse. Further, it finds that job demands have a negative impact on physical and verbal abuse, and that physical and verbal abuse has a detrimental impact on job satisfaction and turnover intentions. These findings are an important start in understanding the impact of work conditions (training, work demands, abuse) on employee outcomes (abuse, job satisfaction, intention to leave) with implications for the management of home and community aged-care employees. Abstract

Automated detection of breast boundary is one of the fundamental steps for computer-aided analysis of mammograms. In this study, the authors developed a new dynamic multiple thresholding based breast boundary (MTBB) detection method for digitized mammograms.A large data set of 716 screen-film mammograms (442 CC view and 274 MLO view) obtained from consecutive cases of an Institutional Review Board approved project were used. An experienced breast radiologist manually traced the breast boundary on each digitized image using a graphical interface to provide a reference standard. The initial breast boundary (MTBB-Initial) was obtained by dynamically adapting the threshold to the gray level range in local regions of the breast periphery. The initial breast boundary was then refined by using gradient information from horizontal and vertical Sobel filtering to obtain the final breast boundary (MTBB-Final). The accuracy of the breast boundary detection algorithm was evaluated by comparison with the reference standard using three performance metrics: The Hausdorff distance (HDist), the average minimum Euclidean distance (AMinDist), and the area overlap measure (AOM).In comparison with the authors' previously developed gradient-based breast boundary (GBB) algorithm, it was found that 68%, 85%, and 94% of images had HDist errors less than 6 pixels (4.8 mm) for GBB, MTBB-Initial, and MTBB-Final, respectively. 89%, 90%, and 96% of images had AMinDist errors less than 1.5 pixels (1.2 mm) for GBB, MTBB-Initial, and MTBB-Final, respectively. 96%, 98%, and 99% of images had AOM values larger than 0.9 for GBB, MTBB-Initial, and MTBB-Final, respectively. The improvement by the MTBB-Final method was statistically significant for all the evaluation measures by the Wilcoxon signed rank test (p0.0001).The MTBB approach that combined dynamic multiple thresholding and gradient information provided better performance than the breast boundary detection algorithm that mainly used gradient information.
