Adolescents who have been diagnosed with disabilities constitute a significant portion of the school population in the United States. For example, the National Survey of Children's Health identified one in four children ages 12 to 17 as having special healthcare needs in 2019 (Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health, n.d.). In the school setting, adolescents with disabilities often have an individualized educational program (IEP). Mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act (IDEA) of 2004, an IEP is an educational document that describes a child's disability, along with specific supports a child will receive in school to help achieve optimum educational and developmental success (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2004). Adolescents with disabilities demonstrate a higher risk for emotional distress compared to age-matched peers (Barnes et al., 2010; Emerson et al., 2007; Gilmore et al., 2013; Stein et al., 2011; Rockett, 2021; Lal et al., 2022). A large body of research has investigated the role of protective factors in decreasing the level of emotional distress among adolescents (Bernat et al., 2006; Resnick et al., 1997). Many protective factors have been identified, including protective home environments, adequate sleep (So et al., 2021), strong parental or other adult relationships (Sieving et al., 2017), and involvement in organized activities, such as sports (Brosnahan et al., 2004; Johnson & Taliaferro, 2011; Boelens et al., 2021). Although a higher risk of co-occurring mental health conditions among adolescents with disabilities and a positive benefit of activity involvement are both well-recognized in the literature, few studies have evaluated the possible overlap between these two areas. The goal of the current study, therefore, is to examine the associations between having an IEP and emotional distress among adolescents and the potential protective association of organized activity involvement on emotional distress symptoms among adolescents with an IEP.

Abstract Maternal germ plasm determines the germline in birds. Previously, we proposed the chicken-specific Bucky ball (cBuc) as a functional equivalent of the zebrafish germ plasm organizer. This study demonstrated the maternal cBuc synthesis, and verified a highly dynamic distribution of Bucky ball from oocyte nests to maturing follicles using specific antibodies. The dynamic re-localization of cBuc from the ovarian stroma to the granulosa cells, and the Balbiani structure of the oocyte was revealed. Following the accumulation of cBuc in the Balbiani body, an increased signal of chicken vasa homolog (CVH) in close contact to cBuc could be detected. Highest transcription of cBuc was recorded in follicles with diameters up to 500 µm. First RNA-interference experiments in an in-vivo follicle culture assay revealed inhibiting effects on cBuc in small follicles. These data demonstrate the maternal origin of cBuc, and underpin its role as germ plasm organizer.

The development of hepatic metastases is the leading cause of mortality in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers and substantial research efforts have been focused on elucidating the intricate mechanisms by which tumor cells successfully migrate to, invade, and ultimately colonize the liver parenchyma. Recent evidence has shown that perturbations in myeloid biology occur early in cancer development, characterized by the initial expansion of specific innate immune populations that promote tumor growth and facilitate metastases. This review summarizes the pathophysiology underlying the proliferation of myeloid cells that occurs with incipient neoplasia and explores the role of innate immune-host interactions, specifically granulocytes and neutrophil extracellular traps, in promoting hepatic colonization by tumor cells through the formation of the “premetastatic niche”. We further summarize the role of additional myeloid subpopulations such as monocytes and macrophages, dendritic cells, platelets, and eosinophils on promoting disease metastases in GI cancers. Lastly, we describe burgeoning therapeutic approaches aimed at targeting specific myeloid populations to reduce liver metastases and highlight the inherent challenges that exist in studying the efficacy of these treatments in preclinical models. As the inception and outgrowth of liver metastases are primary drivers of prognosis in GI malignancies; further research into the complex mechanisms involved in this critical process is urgently needed.

Fluvial transport of organic carbon from the terrestrial biosphere to the oceans is an important term in the global carbon cycle. Traditionally, the long-term burial flux of fluvial particulate organic carbon (POC) is estimated using river suspended sediment flux; however, organic carbon can also travel in river bedload as coarse particulate organic matter (POMBed). Estimates of fluvial POC export to the ocean are highly uncertain because few studies document POMbed sources, flux, and evolution during long-range fluvial transport from uplands to ocean basins. This knowledge gap limits our ability to determine the global terrestrial organic carbon burial flux. In this study we investigate the flux, sources, and transformations of POMBed during fluvial transport over a ∼1300 km long reach of the Río Bermejo, Argentina, which has no tributary inputs. To constrain sourcing of POMBed, we analyzed the composition and stable hydrogen and carbon isotope ratios (δ2H, δ13C) of plant wax biomarkers from POMBed at six locations along the Río Bermejo and compared this to samples of suspended sediment, soil, leaf litter, and floating organic debris (POMfloat) from both the lowland and headwater river system. Across all samples, we found no discernible differences in n-alkane average chain length or nC29 δ13C, indicting a common origin for all sampled POMBed. Leaf litter and POMfloat nC29 δ2H values decrease with elevation, making it a useful proxy for POMBed source elevation. Biomarker δ2H values suggest that POMBed is a mix of distally derived headwater and locally recruited floodplain sources at all sampling locations. These results indicate that POMBed can be preserved during transport through lowland rivers for hundreds of kilometers. However, the POMBed flux decreases with increasing transport distance, suggesting mechanical comminution of these coarse organic particles and progressive transfer into the suspended load. Our provisional estimates suggest that the carbon flux from POMBed comprises less than 1 % of the suspended load POC flux in the Río Bermejo. While this represents a small portion of the river POC flux, this coarse, high-density material likely has a higher probability of deposition and burial in sedimentary basins, potentially allowing it to be more effective in long-term CO2 drawdown relative to fine suspended particles. Because the rate and ratio of POMBed transport versus comminution likely vary across tectonic and climatic settings, additional research is needed to determine the importance of POMBed in the global carbon cycle.

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are a diverse set of neurological disorders characterized by progressive spasticity and weakness in the lower limbs caused by damage to the axons of the corticospinal tract. More than 88 genetic mutations have been associated with HSP, yet the mechanisms underlying these disorders are not well understood. We replicated the pathophysiology of one form of HSP known as spastic paraplegia 15 (SPG15) in zebrafish. This disorder is caused in humans by mutations in the ZFYVE26 gene, which codes for a protein called SPASTIZIN. We show that, in zebrafish, the significant reduction of Spastizin caused degeneration of large motor neurons. Motor neuron degeneration is associated with axon demyelination in the spinal cord and impaired locomotion in the spastizin mutants. Our findings reveal that the reduction in Spastizin compromises axonal integrity and affects the myelin sheath, ultimately recapitulating the pathophysiology of HSPs.

Abstract Quantum Chromodynamics, the theory of quarks and gluons, whose interactions can be described by a local SU(3) gauge symmetry with charges called “color quantum numbers”, is reviewed; the goal of this review is to provide advanced Ph.D. students a comprehensive handbook, helpful for their research. When QCD was “discovered” 50 years ago, the idea that quarks could exist, but not be observed, left most physicists unconvinced. Then, with the discovery of charmonium in 1974 and the explanation of its excited states using the Cornell potential, consisting of the sum of a Coulomb-like attraction and a long range linear confining potential, the theory was suddenly widely accepted. This paradigm shift is now referred to as the November revolution. It had been anticipated by the observation of scaling in deep inelastic scattering, and was followed by the discovery of gluons in three-jet events. The parameters of QCD include the running coupling constant, $$\alpha _s(Q^2)$$ α s ( Q 2 ) , that varies with the energy scale $$Q^2$$ Q 2 characterising the interaction, and six quark masses. QCD cannot be solved analytically, at least not yet, and the large value of $$\alpha _s$$ α s at low momentum transfers limits perturbative calculations to the high-energy region where $$Q^2\gg \varLambda _{{\textrm{QCD}}} ^2\simeq $$ Q 2 ≫ Λ QCD 2 ≃ (250 MeV) $$^2$$ 2 . Lattice QCD (LQCD), numerical calculations on a discretized space-time lattice, is discussed in detail, the dynamics of the QCD vacuum is visualized, and the expected spectra of mesons and baryons are displayed. Progress in lattice calculations of the structure of nucleons and of quantities related to the phase diagram of dense and hot (or cold) hadronic matter are reviewed. Methods and examples of how to calculate hadronic corrections to weak matrix elements on a lattice are outlined. The wide variety of analytical approximations currently in use, and the accuracy of these approximations, are reviewed. These methods range from the Bethe–Salpeter, Dyson–Schwinger coupled relativistic equations, which are formulated in both Minkowski or Euclidean spaces, to expansions of multi-quark states in a set of basis functions using light-front coordinates, to the AdS/QCD method that imbeds 4-dimensional QCD in a 5-dimensional deSitter space, allowing confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking to be described in a novel way. Models that assume the number of colors is very large, i.e. make use of the large $$N_c$$ N c -limit, give unique insights. Many other techniques that are tailored to specific problems, such as perturbative expansions for high energy scattering or approximate calculations using the operator product expansion are discussed. The very powerful effective field theory techniques that are successful for low energy nuclear systems (chiral effective theory), or for non-relativistic systems involving heavy quarks, or the treatment of gluon exchanges between energetic, collinear partons encountered in jets, are discussed. The spectroscopy of mesons and baryons has played an important historical role in the development of QCD. The famous X,Y,Z states – and the discovery of pentaquarks – have revolutionized hadron spectroscopy; their status and interpretation are reviewed as well as recent progress in the identification of glueballs and hybrids in light-meson spectroscopy. These exotic states add to the spectrum of expected $$q{{\bar{q}}}$$ q q ¯ mesons and qqq baryons. The progress in understanding excitations of light and heavy baryons is discussed. The nucleon as the lightest baryon is discussed extensively, its form factors, its partonic structure and the status of the attempt to determine a three-dimensional picture of the parton distribution. An experimental program to study the phase diagram of QCD at high temperature and density started with fixed target experiments in various laboratories in the second half of the 1980s, and then, in this century, with colliders. QCD thermodynamics at high temperature became accessible to LQCD, and numerical results on chiral and deconfinement transitions and properties of the deconfined and chirally restored form of strongly interacting matter, called the Quark–Gluon Plasma (QGP), have become very precise by now. These results can now be confronted with experimental data that are sensitive to the nature of the phase transition. There is clear evidence that the QGP phase is created. This phase of QCD matter can already be characterized by some properties that indicate, within a temperature range of a few times the pseudocritical temperature, the medium behaves like a near ideal liquid. Experimental observables are presented that demonstrate deconfinement. High and ultrahigh density QCD matter at moderate and low temperatures shows interesting features and new phases that are of astrophysical relevance. They are reviewed here and some of the astrophysical implications are discussed. Perturbative QCD and methods to describe the different aspects of scattering processes are discussed. The primary parton–parton scattering in a collision is calculated in perturbative QCD with increasing complexity. The radiation of soft gluons can spoil the perturbative convergence, this can be cured by resummation techniques, which are also described here. Realistic descriptions of QCD scattering events need to model the cascade of quark and gluon splittings until hadron formation sets in, which is done by parton showers. The full event simulation can be performed with Monte Carlo event generators, which simulate the full chain from the hard interaction to the hadronic final states, including the modelling of non-perturbative components. The contribution of the LEP experiments (and of earlier collider experiments) to the study of jets is reviewed. Correlations between jets and the shape of jets had allowed the collaborations to determine the “color factors” – invariants of the SU(3) color group governing the strength of quark–gluon and gluon–gluon interactions. The calculated jet production rates (using perturbative QCD) are shown to agree precisely with data, for jet energies spanning more than five orders of magnitude. The production of jets recoiling against a vector boson, $$W^\pm $$ W ± or Z, is shown to be well understood. The discovery of the Higgs boson was certainly an important milestone in the development of high-energy physics. The couplings of the Higgs boson to massive vector bosons and fermions that have been measured so far support its interpretation as mass-generating boson as predicted by the Standard Model. The study of the Higgs boson recoiling against hadronic jets (without or with heavy flavors) or against vector bosons is also highlighted. Apart from the description of hard interactions taking place at high energies, the understanding of “soft QCD” is also very important. In this respect, Pomeron – and Odderon – exchange, soft and hard diffraction are discussed. Weak decays of quarks and leptons, the quark mixing matrix and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon are processes which are governed by weak interactions. However, corrections by strong interactions are important, and these are reviewed. As the measured values are incompatible with (most of) the predictions, the question arises: are these discrepancies first hints for New Physics beyond the Standard Model? This volume concludes with a description of future facilities or important upgrades of existing facilities which improve their luminosity by orders of magnitude. The best is yet to come!

The relation between the gluon density in a hadron and entanglement entropy can shed a new light on the high energy scattering behavior of hadrons. Using the holographic light-front QCD framework the growth above the classical geometric cross section is directly related to the increase of the internal quantum entropy from the entangled parton distribution in hadrons. A rather consistent picture emerges from the scale dependence of the Pomeron from the QCD evolution of the gluon distribution function g(x,μ), the rising of the integrated cross section in photoproduction of vector mesons, the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) experiments at HERA, hadron multiplicity and quantum entropy. We also point out a possible analogy between parton entanglement entropy and the black-hole entropy of Bekenstein and Hawking.

Walleye (Sander vitreus) are an ecologically important species managed for recreational, tribal, and commercial harvest. Walleye prefer cool water and low light conditions, and therefore changing water temperature and clarity potentially impacts walleye habitat and populations across the landscape. Using survey data collected from 1993 to 2018 from 312 lakes in Minnesota, we evaluated the relationship between thermal-optical habitat and the relative abundance of small (0-300 mm), medium (300450 mm), and large (450 + mm) walleye. Thermal-optical habitat was positively correlated with the relative abundance of small and medium walleye but not large walleye. Walleye were more abundant in larger, naturally reproducing lakes opposed to smaller, stocked lakes. Thermal-optical habitat changed in 59% of lakes since 1980 (26% increasing and 33% decreasing) and appears to be driven primarily by changes in water clarity and thus optical habitat area. Our study provides important insights into local and regional drivers that influence walleye populations that can be used to assist fisheries managers in setting population goals and managing harvest. Abstract Tectonics exerts a strong control over the morphology of Earth's surface that is apparent in active mountain belts. In lowland areas, subtle processes like lithospheric flexure and isostatic rebound can impact Earth surface dynamics, hydrologic connectivity, and topography, suggesting that geomorphic and hydrologic analyses can shed light on underlying lithospheric properties. Here we examine the effect of lithospheric flexure on the geomorphology, hydrology, and river water chemistry of the Rio Bermejo fluvial system in the east Andean foreland basin of northern Argentina. Results show that proximal to the mountain front, foredeep basin subsidence causes sedimentation along a braided channel belt that is superelevated relative to the surrounding flood basin. During floods, water flows from the superelevated channel into the groundwater reservoir, causing a net loss of discharge with distance downstream. Further downstream, forebulge uplift forces channel narrowing, high lateral migration rates, and incision up to 13 m into older river deposits. This incision locally allows groundwater flow into the river, causing a ∼20% increase in river solute load. Groundwater emerges from the forebulge into the backbulge, predominantly as spring‐fed channels. Here, channel migration rates decrease, suggesting a switch from net uplift to subsidence that reduces the depth to the groundwater table. This analysis shows that subtle lithospheric flexure can have significant effects on river channel morphology that determine hydrologic flow paths, and ultimately influence geochemical and ecological patterns. We suggest that these effects may elucidate lithospheric properties that are otherwise inferred from bulk geophysical observations.

Abstract Bucky ball was identified as germ plasm organizer in zebrafish and has proven crucial for Balbiani body condensation. A synteny comparison identified an uncharacterized gene locus in the chicken genome as predicted avian counterpart. Here, we present experimental evidence that this gene locus indeed encodes a ‘Bucky ball’ equivalent in matured oocytes and early embryos of chicken. Heterologous expression of Bucky ball fusion proteins both from zebrafish and chicken with a fluorescent reporter revealed unique patterns indicative for liquid–liquid phase separation of intrinsically disordered proteins. Immuno-labeling detected Bucky ball from oocytes to blastoderms with diffuse distribution in matured oocytes, aggregation in first cleavage furrows, and co-localization to the chicken vasa homolog (CVH). Later, Bucky ball translocated to the cytoplasm of first established cells, and showed nuclear translocation during the major zygotic activation together with CVH. Remarkably, during the phase of area pellucida formation, Bucky ball translocated back into the cytoplasm at stage EGK VI, whereas CVH remained within the nuclei. The condensation of Bucky ball and co-localization with CVH in cleavage furrows and nuclei of the centrally located cells strongly suggests chicken Bucky ball as a germ plasm organizer in birds, and indicate a special importance of the major zygotic activation for germline specification.

Abstract The aim of this study was to detect a response difference in primary (PLC) and secondary liver tumors (SLC) with magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) after TACE therapy. Thirty-one patients (25/31 male; mean age 69.6 years [range: 39–85 years]) with repeated TACE therapy of HCC were compared with twenty-seven patients (27/27 female; mean age 61.2 years [range 39–81 years]) with repeated TACE therapy of metastatic liver disease due to breast cancer. Both groups underwent either one (n = 31) or two (n = 27) repetitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MRE exams in 4- to 6-week intervals using a 1.5-T-scanner. MRE-based liver stiffness and size measurements were evaluated in tumorous lesions and in healthy liver lobe controls. PLC showed a significantly larger tumor size compared to SLC (26.4 cm2 vs. 11 cm2, p = 0.007) and a higher degree of stiffness (5.8 kPa vs. 5.1 kPa, p = 0.04). Deep learning (DL) models are increasingly used to forecast water quality variables for use in decision making. Ingesting recent observations of the forecasted variable has been shown to greatly increase model performance at monitored locations; however, observations are not collected at all locations, and methods are not yet well developed for DL models for optimally ingesting recent observations from other sites to inform focal sites. In this paper, we evaluate two different DL model structures, a long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) and a recurrent graph convolutional neural network (RGCN), both with and without data assimilation for forecasting daily maximum stream temperature 7 days into the future at monitored and unmonitored locations in a 70-segment stream network. All our DL models performed well when forecasting stream temperature as the root mean squared error (RMSE) across all models ranged from 2.03 to 2.11°C for 1-day lead times in the validation period, with substantially better performance at gaged locations (RMSE = 1.45–1.52°C) compared to ungaged locations (RMSE = 3.18–3.27°C). Forecast uncertainty characterization was near-perfect for gaged locations but all DL models were overconfident (i.e., uncertainty bounds too narrow) for ungaged locations. Our results show that the RGCN with data assimilation performed best for ungaged locations and especially at higher temperatures (>18°C) which is important for management decisions in our study location. This indicates that the networked model structure and data assimilation techniques may help borrow information from nearby monitored sites to improve forecasts at unmonitored locations. Results from this study can help guide DL modeling decisions when forecasting other important environmental variables.

Abdominal surgery can often lead to complications including the formation of peritoneal adhesions and the molecular mechanisms underlying this process are still unknown. Here, the authors suggest that bacterial contamination drives adhesion formation through mesothelial EGFR signalling.

Background: Unmet health needs of women with head injuries sustained by intimate partner violence (IPV) include risk of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The purpose of this evaluation was to explore the potential effectiveness of TBI screening as a health promotion strategy for shelter-seeking women with IPV head injuries. We wanted to learn if shelter-seeking women, willing to disclose IPV, would accept TBI screening if offered. Methods: An extended version of the HELPS TBI screening tool and survey of daily symptoms and health needs were used to screen new residents of an urban shelter for women. Results: The participants (N?=?18) primarily were educated black women with one or more self-reported IPV-related head injury. Most participants (77.8%) had positive TBI screens for probable brain injury. The majority (88.8%) lived with one or more daily symptoms they did not have before sustaining a IPV head injury. The symptoms reported most frequently were depression (88.9%), anxiety (77.8%), and headache (66.7%). All participants had one or more unmet health need. Although most (77.8%) needed to see a primary care provider, mental health care was the most important health need identified. Conclusions: TBI screening could be considered an effective health promotion strategy for IPV survivors if screening facilitates treatment for positive screens and other unmet health needs. Surgical parabiosis enables sharing of the circulating milieu between two organisms. This powerful model presents diverse complications based on age, strain, sex, and other experimental parameters. Here, we provide an optimized parabiosis protocol for the surgical union of two mice internally at the elbow and knee joints with continuous external joining of the skin. This protocol incorporates guidance and solutions to complications that can occur, particularly in aging studies, including non-cohesive pairing, variable anesthesia sensitivity, external and internal dehiscence, dehydration, and weight loss. We also offer a straightforward method for validating postoperative blood chimerism and confirming its time course using flow cytometry. Utilization of our optimized protocol can facilitate reproducible parabiosis experimentation to dynamically explore mechanisms of aging and rejuvenation.

Increasingly, undergraduate institutions are incorporating original research into the curriculum as a matter of best practice. However, while the practice of science has grown more collaborative, undergraduate research has remained largely confined to single-institution studies. Incorporating long-term, distributed research projects into the undergraduate research experience can better prepare students to interpret and engage in science of the future. The Decomposition in Aquatic and Terrestrial Invaded Systems (DATIS) project within the Ecological Research as Education Network (EREN) offers a good model for examining how to minimize challenges and maximize opportunities associated with classroom use of long-term, collaborative research projects. Eleven key challenges are identified, and practical solutions are provided for each. By modeling this scientific approach in primarily undergraduate institutions, we are preparing graduates who will have the tools and knowledge to work collaboratively and create their own distributed research networks. Our goal is that the decomposition project we describe here can inform and inspire others seeking to engage in research at the undergraduate level, either as potential research coordinators or as collaborators in an existing network.

Multisite, course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) in the Ecological Research as Education Network (EREN) were assessed for impacts on student learning of collaborative science skills using a survey that could serve as a starting point for a validated assessment instrument for multisite CUREs. Pretests/posttests were administered across multiple courses and institutions, capturing effects of diverse EREN projects and pedagogies on collaborative knowledge. Students' scientific collaboration and data management skills improved most in small, upper-level courses. The amount of EREN content in a course was positively associated with posttest scores for 60 to 86 percent of assessment survey questions. However, no learning gains were seen for some questions, and some cases of low competency and effects of timing and place of assessment testing were observed in student scores. EREN CUREs need further development to maximize their potential.

Abstract The toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) agonist, CBLB502/Entolimod, is a peptide derived from bacterial flagellin and has been shown to protect against radiation-induced tissue damage in animal models. Here we investigated the protective mechanism of CBLB502 in the liver using models of ischemia-reperfusion injury and concanavalin A (ConA) induced immuno-hepatitis. We report that pretreatment of mice with CBLB502 provoked a concomitant activation of NF-κB and STAT3 signaling in the liver and reduced hepatic damage in both models. To understand the underlying mechanism, we screened for cytokines in the serum of CBLB502 treated animals and detected high levels of IL-22. There was no transcriptional upregulation of IL-22 in the liver, rather it was found in extrahepatic tissues, mainly the colon, mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN), and spleen. RNA-seq analysis on isolated hepatocytes demonstrated that the concomitant activation of NF-κB signaling by CBLB502 and STAT3 signaling by IL-22 produced a synergistic cytoprotective transcriptional signature. In IL-22 knockout mice, the loss of IL-22 resulted in a decrease of hepatic STAT3 activation, a reduction in the cytoprotective signature, and a loss of hepatoprotection following ischemia-reperfusion-induced liver injury. Taken together, these findings suggest that CBLB502 protects the liver by increasing hepatocyte resistance to acute liver injury through the cooperation of TLR5-NF-κB and IL-22-STAT3 signaling pathways.

As diversity in higher education increases, the one-size-fits-all, teacher-centered, traditional model of lecture-style teaching sets students up for failure. In addition, the strategic rhetoric of blaming students for academic failures keeps the systemic power in place, justifying the current system. In contrast, differentiated instruction, a student-centered instructional model, has shown success in higher education through a limited number of mostly qualitative studies. The purpose of the current study was to explore implementing differentiated instruction in higher education to understand if quantitative improvements were noted in a differentiated (DI) classroom compared to a nondifferentiated (NDI) classroom in two different sections of the same Educational Psychology course taught by the same instructor. In addition, perceptions toward the use of differentiated instruction were attained. The DI and NDI sections had enrollments of 39 and 38 undergraduate students, respectively. The majority were preservice teachers attending a mid-sized Midwestern University. The DI group significantly outperformed the NDI group on the aggregates of the assignments and the exams. However, only two assignments and one exam showed significantly higher scores for the DI group when examined individually. The DI group perceived differentiated methods as beneficial to their learning as noted on the course evaluation and survey questions.
