Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally, with treatment outcomes closely tied to liver function. This study evaluates the prognostic utility of the albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score compared to the traditional Child-Pugh (CP) grading, leveraging real-world evidence from a large-scale, multi-center database. Methods: The Liver Cancer IN Korea (LINK) research network, a multi-center initiative, retrospectively collected electronic health records from three academic hospitals in South Korea, encompassing HCC patients diagnosed between 2015 and 2020. Inclusion criteria mandated at least one HCC treatment and excluded patients with other primary cancer diagnoses. The study followed patients until death, the last visit, or June 2021, employing standardized data processing and rule-based algorithms for data consistency. The prognostic efficacy of ALBI scores and CP scores was compared through time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the inverse probability censoring weighting method. Results: From 25,248 newly diagnosed patients, 10,297 were included, with 65.82% having hepatitis B etiology and a mean follow-up of 27.49 months. Patients’ classification by modified ALBI (mALBI) grade at diagnosis revealed: grade 1 (48.87%), 2a (20.50%), 2b (24.54%), and 3 (5.17%), with a minimal percentage missing (0.92%). Transarterial therapy (54.07%) and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (84.14% as the first-line systemic therapy) were predominant treatments. The ALBI score demonstrated greater prognostic efficacy than the CP score in long-term outcomes, with time-dependent area under the ROC curve analysis showing a score of 0.71 for ALBI versus 0.67 for CP at 60 months. Furthermore, higher mALBI grades were significantly associated with poorer survival outcomes, as indicated by both univariate and multivariate Cox proportional regression model analyses (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The study confirmed the ALBI score’s superior prognostic ability over the CP score, especially evident in long-term outcomes, suggesting a shift toward more nuanced liver function assessment tools in real-world clinical practice.

Abstract Here, the utilization of a highly uniform water‐borne polyimide (W‐PI) thin film as a gate dielectric layer for large‐scale organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) exceeding 100 cm2 is presented, employing the bar‐coating technique. The W‐PI thin films are obtained uniformly over a large area by systematically manipulating the surface tension of the water‐soluble poly(amic acid) salts (W‐PAAS) solution using alcohol as a co‐solvent in a “Green” process. The thickness of the W‐PI thin film is precisely controlled within the range of tens to hundreds of nanometers by adjusting key parameters, including the concentration of the W‐PAAS solution, wire diameter, and bar‐coating speed. As a result, 500 pentacene‐based OTFTs are successfully fabricated on a 10 × 10 cm2 substrate, utilizing a 280 nm thick W‐PI gate dielectric film. These devices exhibit excellent uniformity, with field‐effect mobility of 0.20 ± 0.02 cm2 V−1 s−1. Furthermore, the fabrication of electronic devices using an environmental‐friendly bar‐coating method on large‐area flexible substrates is demonstrated. This study highlights the considerable potential of eco‐friendly W‐PI thin films as dielectric materials, offering advantages such as cost‐effectiveness and high efficiency for reliable industrial applications.

Motivation: Lead identification is a fundamental step to prioritize candidate compounds for downstream drug discovery process. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) approaches are widely used to identify lead compounds using both chemical property and experimental information. However, ML or DL methods rarely consider compound similarity information directly since ML and DL models use abstract representation of molecules for model construction. Alternatively, data mining approaches are also used to explore chemical space with drug candidates by screening undesirable compounds. A major challenge for data mining approaches is to develop efficient data mining methods that search large chemical space for desirable lead compounds with low false positive rate. Results: In this work, we developed a network propagation (NP) based data mining method for lead identification that performs search on an ensemble of chemical similarity networks. We compiled 14 fingerprint-based similarity networks. Given a target protein of interest, we use a deep learning-based drug target interaction model to narrow down compound candidates and then we use network propagation to prioritize drug candidates that are highly correlated with drug activity score such as IC50. In an extensive experiment with BindingDB, we showed that our approach successfully discovered intentionally unlabeled compounds for given targets. To further demonstrate the prediction power of our approach, we identified 24 candidate leads for CLK1. Two out of five synthesizable candidates were experimentally validated in binding assays. In conclusion, our framework can be very useful for lead identification from very large compound databases such as ZINC.

Abstract Background Computational phenotypes are most often combinations of patient billing codes that are highly predictive of disease using electronic health records (EHR). In the case of rare diseases that can only be diagnosed by genetic testing, computational phenotypes identify patient cohorts for genetic testing and possible diagnosis. This article details the validation of a computational phenotype for PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS) against the EHR of patients at three collaborating clinical research centers: Boston Children's Hospital, Children's National Hospital, and the University of Washington. Methods A combination of billing codes from the International Classification of Diseases versions 9 and 10 (ICD-9 and ICD-10) for diagnostic criteria postulated by a research team at Cleveland Clinic was used to identify patient cohorts for genetic testing from the clinical data warehouses at the three research centers. Subsequently, the EHR—including billing codes, clinical notes, and genetic reports—of these patients were reviewed by clinical experts to identify patients with PHTS. Results The PTEN genetic testing yield of the computational phenotype, the number of patients who needed to be genetically tested for incidence of pathogenic PTEN gene variants, ranged from 82 to 94% at the three centers. Conclusions Computational phenotypes have the potential to enable the timely and accurate diagnosis of rare genetic diseases such as PHTS by identifying patient cohorts for genetic sequencing and testing.

IntroductionMuch drug development and published analysis for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) focuses on early-line treatment. Full sequences of treatment from diagnosis to death and the impact of later lines of therapy are rarely studied. We describe the establishment of an international network of cancer centers configured to compare real-world treatment pathways in UK, Portugal, Germany, South Korea, France and Romania (the Ovarian Real-World International Consortium; ORWIC).Methods3344 patients diagnosed with EOC (2012-2018) were analysed using a common data model and hub and spoke programming approach applied to existing electronic medical records. Consistent definition of line of therapy between sites and an efficient approach to analysis within the limitations of local information governance was achieved.ResultsMedian age of participants was 53-67 years old and 5-29% were ECOG >1. Between 62% and 84% of patients were diagnosed with late-stage disease (FIGO III-IV). Sites treating younger and fitter patients had higher rates of debulking surgery for those diagnosed at late stage than sites with older, more frail patients. At least 21% of patients treated with systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) had recurrent disease following second-line therapy (2L); up to 11 lines of SACT treatment were recorded for some patients. Platinum-based SACT was consistently used across sites at 1L, but choices at 2L varied, with hormone therapies commonly used in the UK and Portugal. The use (and type) of maintenance therapy following 1L also varied. Beyond 2L, there was little consensus between sites on treatment choice: trial compounds and unspecified combinations of other agents were common.DiscussionSpecific treatment sequences are reported up to 4L and the establishment of this network facilitates future analysis of comparative outcomes per line of treatment with the aim of optimizing available options for patients with recurrent EOC. In particular, this real-world network can be used to assess the growing use of PARP inhibitors. The real-world optimization of advanced line treatment will be especially important for patients not usually eligible for involvement with clinical trials. The resources to enable this analysis to be implemented elsewhere are supplied and the network will seek to grow in coverage of further sites.

Abstract In this study, preclinical experiments were performed with an in-house developed prototypal photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD CT) system. The performance of the system was compared with the conventional energy-integrating detector (EID)-based CT, concerning the basic image quality biomarkers and the respective capacities for material separation. The pre- and the post-contrast axial images of a canine brain captured by the PCD CT and EID CT systems were found to be visually similar. Multi-energy images were acquired using the PCD CT system, and machine learning-based material decomposition was performed to segment the white and gray matters for the first time in soft tissue segmentation. Furthermore, to accommodate clinical applications that require high resolution acquisitions, a small, native, high-resolution (HR) detector was implemented on the PCD CT system, and its performance was evaluated based on animal experiments. The HR acquisition mode improved the spatial resolution and delineation of the fine structures in the canine’s nasal turbinates compared to the standard mode. Clinical applications that rely on high-spatial resolution expectedly will also benefit from this resolution-enhancing function. The results demonstrate the potential impact on the brain tissue segmentation, improved detection of the liver tumors, and capacity to reconstruct high-resolution images both preclinically and clinically.

Water electrolysis is one of the attractive technologies for producing clean and sustainable hydrogen fuels with high purity. Among the various kinds of water electrolysis systems, anion exchange membrane water electrolysis has received much attention by combining the advantages of alkaline water electrolysis and proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. However, the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction, which is based on multiple and complex reaction mechanisms, is regarded as a major obstacle for the development of high-efficiency water electrolysis. Therefore, the development of high-performance oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts is a prerequisite for the commercialization and wide application of water electrolysis systems. This mini review highlights the current progress of representative oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts that are based on a perovskite structure in alkaline media. We first summarize the research status of various kinds of perovskite-based oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts, reaction mechanisms and activity descriptors. Finally, the challenges facing the development of perovskite-based oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts and a perspective on their future are discussed.

Currently, polypropylene (PP) is used in various products, thus leading to high daily exposure in humans. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the toxicological effects, biodistribution, and accumulation of PP microplastics in the human body. In this study, administration of two particle sizes of PP microplastics (approximately 5 and 10–50 µm) did not lead to any significant changes in several toxicological evaluation parameters, including body weight and pathological examination, compared with the control group in ICR mice. Therefore, the approximate lethal dose and no-observed-adverse-effect level of PP microplastics in ICR mice were established as ≥2000 mg/kg. Furthermore, we manufactured cyanine 5.5 carboxylic acid (Cy5.5-COOH)-labeled fragmented PP microplastics to monitor real-time in vivo biodistribution. After oral administration of the Cy5.5-COOH-labeled microplastics to the mice, most of the PP microplastics were detected in the gastrointestinal tract and observed to be out of the body after 24 h in IVIS Spectrum CT. Therefore, this study provides a new insight into the short-term toxicity, distribution, and accumulation of PP microplastics in mammals.

Tunable structural colors have a multitude of applications in the beautification of mobile devices, in the decoration of artwork, and in the creation of color filters. In this paper, we describe a Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) design that can be used to systematically tune structural colors by altering the thickness of the top metal and intermediate insulator. Cu and Si3N4 were selected as the top metal and intermediate insulator layers, respectively, and various reflection colors were printed on Al. To protect the Cu surface from scratchiness and oxidation, a number of capping layers, including SiO2, LPSQ, PMMA, and the commercially available clear coat ProtectaClear, were applied. In addition to their ability to protect Cu from a humid environment without deteriorating color quality, ProtectaClear and LPSQ coatings have minimal angle dependency. Furthermore, a bilayer of PMMA/SiO2 can protect the Cu surface from the effects of humidity. In addition, the PMMA/SiO2 and ProtectaClear/SiO2 bilayers can also protect against corrosion on the Cu surface. The colors can be tuned by controlling the thickness of either the metal layer or intermediate insulator layer, and vivid structural colors including brown, dark orange, blue, violet, magenta, cyan, green-yellow, and yellow colors can be printed. The measured dielectric functions of Cu thin films do not provide any evidence of the plasmonic effect, and therefore, it is expected that the obtained colors are attributed to thin-film interference.

Depth-image-based rendering (DIBR), where arbitrary views are synthesized from a center image and depth image, has received much attention in the three-dimensional (3D) research field. With advances in depth-acquisition techniques and the proliferation of 3D glasses and 3D display devices, there is a growing demand for schemes to protect the copyrights of DIBR 3D images. Digital watermarking is a typical protection technology and designing a watermarking method for DIBR 3D images is a challenging task because the synchronization of watermarks can easily be broken in the process of generating synthetic images. To address this issue, we propose a non-subsampled contourlet transform (NSCT)-based blind watermarking for DIBR 3D images. To ensure the proposed method has properties of robustness against the DIBR process, we conduct an analysis of robustness for NSCT subbands against DIBR attacks. Based on the analysis results, we select subbands that are robust against DIBR attacks and embed watermark in the low coefficients of NSCT subbands using quantization-based embedding. While ensuring robustness, the proposed method also improves the imperceptibility of watermarks by adjusting their embedding strength according to computed perceptual masking values. Through experiments, we show that the proposed method is robust against both desynchronization attacks of the DIBR process and common attacks including signal processing operations and geometric distortions. The high imperceptibility of our method is also verified by several evaluation metrics in a subjective and objective manner.

This article presents data on social capital at the United States’ county-level. Following Rupasingha et al. (2006), the social capital index captures the common factor among density measures of 10 different types of associations, voter turnout rates, U.S. decennial census participation rates, and the number of non-profit organizations. Based on Knack (2003), we create associational densities measures as a proxy for both bridging and bonding social capital. Including data on income inequality, racial diversity, minority group size, average household income, educational attainment, the ratio of a family household, the size of migration population, and female labor market participation rates, the data covers 3,104 U.S. counties for both 2009 and 2014. Hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) are aggressive tumors with a poor prognosis. Approved first-line treatments include sorafenib, lenvatinib, and a combination of atezolizumab and bevacizumab; however, they do not cure HCC. We investigated MBP-11901 as a drug candidate for HCC. Cell proliferation and cytotoxicity were evaluated using normal and cancer human liver cell lines, while Western blotting and flow cytometry evaluated apoptosis. The anticancer effect of MBP-11901 was verified in vitro through migration, invasion, colony formation, and JC-1 MMP assays. In mouse models, the tumor volume, tumor weight, and bodyweight were measured, and cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis were analyzed. The toxicity of MBP-11901 was investigated through GOT/GPT and histological analyses in the liver and kidney. The signaling mechanism of MBP-11901 was investigated through kinase assays, phosphorylation analysis, and in silico docking simulations. Results. MBP-11901 was effective against various human HCC cell lines, leading to the disappearance of most tumors when administered orally in animal models. This effect was dose-dependent, with no differences in efficacy according to administration intervals. MBP-11901 induced anticancer effects by targeting the signaling mechanisms of FLT3, VEGFR2, c-KIT, and PDGFRβ. MBP-11901 is suggested as a novel therapeutic agent for the treatment of advanced or unresectable liver cancer.

The influential role of international treaty secretariats in coordinating bureaucracies across jurisdictional boundaries has been highlighted in recent years. While we now better understand how their influence occurs, the field still faces a substantial difficulty in answering the basic quantitative question of “how influential?” By employing network analysis, we devised and tested a survey to quantify secretariat influence within an international environmental regime. We applied the survey tool to two transboundary fisheries governance networks in North America and here focus on the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC) as our primary case study. The results demonstrate a high ability of treaty secretariat to influence the management decisions of federal and state/provincial agencies. Primary interview data collected with the GLFC secretariat staff helps explain this finding. This study advances the reconceptualization of secretariat influence via relational metrics, and offers a way to estimate secretariat influence despite their typically veiled modes of operation.

Chromium and chromium nitride were selected as potential barriers to prevent fuel-clad chemical interaction (FCCI) between the cladding and the fuel material. In this study, ferritic/martensitic HT-9 steel and misch metal were used to simulate the reaction between the cladding and fuel fission product, respectively. Radio frequency magnetron sputtering was used to deposit Cr and CrN films onto the cladding, and the gas flow rates of argon and nitrogen were fixed at certain values for each sample to control the deposition rate and the crystal structure of the films. The samples were heated for 24 h at 933 K through the diffusion couple test, and considerable amount of interdiffusion (max. thickness: 550 μm) occurred at the interface between HT-9 and misch metal when the argon and nitrogen were used individually. The elemental contents of misch metal were detected at the HT-9 through energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy due to the interdiffusion. However, the specimens that were sputtered by mixed gases (Ar and N2) exhibited excellent resistance to FCCI. The thickness of these CrN films were only 4 μm, but these films effectively prevented the FCCI due to their high adhesion strength (frictional force ≥1,200 μm) and dense columnar microstructures. Three-dimensional (3-D) printing has become a key technology, changing industry paradigms in many sectors, including automobiles, aerospace, medical applications, content production, and service areas. However, 3-D printing introduces many copyright infringement issues for digital 3-D objects because the object data can be directly printed and distributed both online and physically. New distribution scenarios not previously considered also pose new content security problems. This paper reviews intellectual property protection issues and solutions in the 3-D printing environment. We summarize various requirements not previously considered in the literature, defining infringement issues for new technology scenarios and requirements. We then analyze existing copyright security technology coverage according to those scenarios and various other aspects, and present the pros and cons of each technology and future research directions. The presented scenarios and reviews will provide significant benefits for the future development of reliable technologies that protect the 3-D printing intellectual property.

Background: We aimed to investigate the changes in glucagon levels in people with diabetes after the ingestion of a mixed meal and the correlations of variation in glucagon levels with incretin and clinico-biochemical characteristics. Methods: Glucose, C-peptide, glucagon, intact glucagon-like peptide 1 (iGLP-1), and intact glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (iGIP) were measured in blood samples collected from 317 people with diabetes before and 30 min after the ingestion of a standard mixed meal. The delta (Δ) is the 30-min value minus the basal value. Results: At 30 min after meal ingestion, the glucagon level showed no difference relative to the basal value, whereas glucose, C-peptide, iGLP-1, and iGIP levels showed a significant increase. In univariate analysis, Δglucagon showed not only a strong correlation with HbA1c but also a significant correlation with fasting glucose, Δglucose, and estimated glomerular filtration rate. However, Δglucagon showed no significant correlations with ΔiGLP-1 and ΔiGIP. In the hierarchical multiple regression analysis, HbA1c was the only variable that continued to show the most significant correlation with Δglucagon. Conclusions: People with diabetes showed no suppression of glucagon secretion after meal ingestion. Patients with poorer glycemic control may show greater increase in postprandial glucagon level, and this does not appear to be mediated by incretin.

Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) including human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) have been extensively studied as an alternative cellular model for recapitulating phenotypic and pathophysiologic characters of human diseases. Particularly, hiPSCs generated from the genetic disease somatic cells could provide a good cellular model to screen potential drugs for treating human genetic disorders. However, the patient-derived cellular model has a limitation when the patient samples bearing genetic mutations are difficult to obtain due to their rarity. Thus, in this study, we explored the potential use of hPSC-derived Wilson’s disease model generated without a patient sample to provide an alternative approach for modeling human genetic disease by applying gene editing technology. Wilson’s disease hPSCs were generated by introducing a R778L mutation in the ATP7B gene (c.2333G>T) using Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)/Cas9 system into wildtype hESCs. Established Wilson’s disease hESCs were further differentiated into hepatocyte-like cells (HLCs) and analyzed for disease phenotypes and responses against therapeutic agent treatment. R778L mutation in the ATP7B gene was successfully introduced into wildtype hESCs, and the introduction of the mutation neither altered the self-renewal ability of hESCs nor the differentiation capability into HLCs. However, R778L mutation-introduced HLCs exhibited higher vulnerability against excessive copper supplementation than wildtype HLCs. Finally, the applicability of the R778L mutation introduced HLCs in drug screening was further demonstrated using therapeutic agents against the Wilson’s diseases. Therefore, the established model in this study could effectively mimic the Wilson’s disease without patient’s somatic cells and could provide a reliable alternative model for studying and drug screening of Wilson’s disease.

Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) and other hepatorenal fibrocystic diseases (HRFD) are relatively rare recessive disorders that constitute an important set of childhood nephropathies. Little is known about fundamental pathogenesis, and advances toward clinical trials will require well-characterized patient cohorts and the development of predictive and prognostic biomarkers. Such studies in rare diseases require greater collaboration than the efforts in common diseases where large patient repositories can be built at a single site. For the HRFD, clinical and translational research studies would be well served by centralized case accrual that coordinates collection of clinical data, biospecimens (DNA and tissues), and genetic information. As a part of the NIH-funded Hepatorenal Fibrocystic Disease Core Center, we have established a web-accessible portal to enroll patients with ARPKD and other HRFD and compile baseline and longitudinal clinical information in a REDCap-based clinical database. This central database is structured to collect clinical data from patients throughout the Americas (North, Central, and South). By using informatic analyses, we have defined the first data-driven estimates of ARPKD-related neonatal mortality, as well as the incidence and prevalence of this disease. These data indicate that while ARPKD is a rare disorder, there are hundreds of patients potentially available for deep clinical phenotyping in the United States alone. The centralization and sharing of clinical information and biomaterials from ARPKD and other HRFD patients hold the potential to accelerate progress in understanding disease pathways. Once the database is mature, the well-characterized patient cohorts will provide an important resource for developing clinical trials to evaluate new targeted therapeutic interventions in this spectrum of disorders.

Many researchers have conducted experiments on the position and nozzle conditions in the exhaust pipe of a stage/swirl mixer, as well as the injection position required to satisfy the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulations. In this study, an SCR (Selective catalytic reduction) system was designed through basic and detailed designs. The performance of the components was verified through a single-component performance test for the detailed design components, and the total nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction efficiency was predicted using the proven system. Subsequently, the system was applied to an actual engine, and the performance was verified according to the engine operating conditions using the experimental variables. The NOx reduction rate and NH3 slip characteristics in relation to MCR (Maximum Continuous Rating) conditions using the optimised SCR system indicate that the NOx reduction rate exceeds 80% in all MCR conditions. Finally, the SCR system developed in this study proves that the performance of the SCR system satisfies the IMO regulatory requirements.

We investigate the magnetic shell structure of repulsively interacting two-component Fermi gases trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential and loaded on the optical Lieb lattices. We employ the real-space dynamical mean-field theory (R-DMFT) to explicitly consider the trap potential in a self-consistent way. Computing the profiles of particle density and local magnetization across the lattice sites in the trap, we find that the incompressible core with ferrimagnetic ordering appears with the density plateau at the trap center, which is surrounded by the shell of the normal metallic phase. We examine the incompressibility of the core by adding more particles and creating the higher spin-population imbalance. While the core area expands from the outer shell with added particles and increased polarization, the excess particles are prohibited from going inside the core, and thus the density plateau is unchanged at the half-filling with the same magnetic ordering. In addition, we find that the feature of the phase separation differs with the sublattices, where the interstitial sites causing the flat band dispersion shows the signature of the abrupt transition in the density and magnetization at the boundary between the core and surrounding shells.

Cardiofaciocutaneous (CFC) syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling. However, little is known about how aberrant ERK signaling is associated with the defective bone development manifested in most CFC syndrome patients. In this study, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) were generated from dermal fibroblasts of a CFC syndrome patient having rapidly accelerated fibrosarcoma kinase B (BRAF) gain-of-function mutation. CFC-iPSCs were differentiated into mesenchymal stem cells (CFC-MSCs) and further induced to osteoblasts in vitro. The osteogenic defects of CFC-MSCs were revealed by alkaline phosphatase activity assay, mineralization assay, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and western blotting. Osteogenesis of CFC-MSCs was attenuated compared to wild-type (WT)-MSCs. In addition to activated ERK signaling, increased p-SMAD2 and decreased p-SMAD1 were observed in CFC-MSCs during osteogenesis. The defective osteogenesis of CFC-MSCs was rescued by inhibition of ERK signaling and SMAD2 signaling or activation of SMAD1 signaling. Importantly, activation of ERK signaling and SMAD2 signaling or inhibition of SMAD1 signaling recapitulated the impaired osteogenesis in WT-MSCs. Our findings indicate that SMAD2 signaling and SMAD1 signaling as well as ERK signaling are responsible for defective early bone development in CFC syndrome, providing a novel insight on the pathological mechanism and therapeutic targets.

Do neoliberal economic reforms in Latin American democracies mobilize citizens to overcome their collective action problems and protest? A recent addition to the scholarship on this crucial question of the relationship of markets and politics, Bellinger and Arce (2011), concludes that economic liberalization does have this effect, working to repoliticize collective actors and reinvigorate democracy. We reexamine the article’s analyses and demonstrate that they misinterpret the marginal effect of the variables of theoretical interest. Thus, the article’s optimistic claims about the consequences for democracy of economic liberalization in the region are not supported by its own empirical results. It is argued here that its results suggest instead that protests became more common in autocracies when they moved away from markets. Rather than speaking to how people have mobilized to protest against liberal reforms in Latin America’s democracies, the work’s analyses illuminate only when people protested against the region’s dictatorships.

This article examines the contemporary technology and patent system in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) through a comprehensive review of academic literature, media discourse analysis, and quantitative patent data. By analyzing 60 volumes of the DPRK Official Journal of Invention from 2015 to 2019, this research maps the technology landscape in North Korea based on International Patent Classification (IPC) codes. The findings reveal a modest increase in overall patent applications, with a notable 10 percentage point rise in IPC Section G (Physics), indicating growing interest in basic sciences and specific areas for technological advancement. However, applications for inventor's certificates significantly outnumber patent filings, highlighting the country's continued emphasis on a socialist system despite some limited coexistence of market elements. The dualistic nature of North Korea's patent system and its underlying socialist ideology are explored, along with recent legal amendments. The North Korean patent system faces ongoing challenges due to its formal and simplistic nature, limited utilization of the patent market, and the dominance of inventor's certificates over patent applications. With the advent of the fourth industrial revolution, rapid advancement in technology has blurred the distinction between the physical and digital worlds. Such advancement poses increased risk of security leakage by industrial spies, resulting in threats to industrial security. In response, there has been an increasing focus on "human factors" as one of the main factors of industrial security leakage. In order to examine the influence of human factors on industrial security, we measured the influence of individualistic-collectivistic value orientation on the perception of severity of industrial security leakage according to specific motives and contents of the leakage, and experience of security training according to the type of industry. As a result, differences in the perception of the severity of industrial security leakage were observed between people with collectivistic and individualistic value orientation. In addition, there were differences in perception of severity according to the specific motives and content of industrial security leakage. Finally, there was a difference in the completion rate of security training according to the type of industry. Implications of these findings for industrial security are further discussed. The "National Cyber Security Strategy," established by the Republic of Korea Government in 2019 for the first time since its foundation, contains information on human and cultural factors of cybersecurity. This is to reflect the importance of human factors by breaking away from the convention that cyberattacks and security threats can be controlled only by technical means. The present study investigated the importance of human factors in cybersecurity and examines how the Korean government's cybersecurity policy deals with human factors. A survey on 274 participants revealed that there were ①differences in cybersecurity prevention behavior depending on individualistic-collectivistic values, ②the practice rate of preventive measures against cybercrime was higher for those who received security training than those who didn't, and ③preventive measures and countermeasures against cybercrime were limited to certain methods. Accordingly, security measures and training from diverse perspectives are required to prevent cybercrimes targeting individuals and organizations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To report our experience on Neuroform Atlas Y-stenting for coiling of unruptured wide-neck bifurcation aneurysms. Methods: From March 2018 to January 2021, we treated 473 aneurysms in 436 patients with coil embolization, of which 15 cases with wide-necked bifurcation aneurysms were treated by Y-stent-assisted coiling with two Neuroform Atlas stents. We retrospectively reviewed the characteristics of patients and aneurysms, procedure-related complications, radiographic results, and clinical outcomes. Results: All 15 cases using Neuroform Atlas Y-stenting were successful. Patients included 6 men and 9 women with a mean age ± standard deviation of 56.4±6.6 years. The mean dome and neck sizes were 6.4±3.1 mm and 4.7±1.8 mm, respectively. Immediate post-procedural angiograms showed complete occlusion in 46.7%, neck remnant in 13.3%, and incomplete occlusion in 40% of cases. No treatment-related morbidity or mortality occurred in any patients. All patients had good clinical outcomes (Glasgow Outcome Score 5) at both discharge and during a mean 12.3-month (range 1-28 months) follow-up. All aneurysms showed improved or stable occlusion on follow-up imaging. Further, the latest follow-up angiography showed complete occlusion in 73.3%, neck remnant in 6.7%, and incomplete occlusion in 20%. Conclusions: Y-stent-assisted coiling with Neuroform Atlas stents might be a feasible and safe option for wide-necked bifurcation aneurysms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new computed tomography (CT) contrast agent based on gold nanoparticles (GNPs) that could be useful for a blood pool and hepatoma imaging is presented.

Median filtering is used as an anti-forensic technique to erase processing history of some image manipulations such as JPEG, resampling, etc. Thus, various detectors have been proposed to detect median filtered images. To counter these techniques, several anti-forensic methods have been devised as well. However, restoring the median filtered image is a typical ill-posed problem, and thus it is still difficult to reconstruct the image visually close to the original image. Also, it is further hard to make the restored image have the statistical characteristic of the raw image for the anti-forensic purpose. To solve this problem, we present a median filtering anti-forensic method based on deep convolutional neural networks, which can effectively remove traces from median filtered images. We adopt the framework of generative adversarial networks to generate images that follow the underlying statistics of unaltered images, significantly enhancing forensic undetectability. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that our method successfully deceives the existing median filtering forensic techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As technological developments have enabled high-quality fingerprint scanning, sweat pores, one of the Level 3 features of fingerprints, have been successfully used in automatic fingerprint recognition systems (AFRS). Since the pore extraction process is a critical step for AFRS, high accuracy is required. However, it is difficult to extract the pore correctly because the pore shape depends on the person, region, and pore type. To solve the problem, we have presented a pore extraction method using deep convolutional neural networks and pore intensity refinement. The deep networks are used to detect pores in detail using a large area of a fingerprint image. We then refine the pore information by finding local maxima to identify pores with different intensities in the fingerprint image.
