Abstract

International audience; Mixed-anion compounds widen the chemical space of attainable materials compared to single anionic compounds, but the exploration of their structural diversity is limited by common synthetic paths. Especially, oxychlorides rely mainly on layered structures, which suffer from low stability during photo(electro)catalytic processes. Herein we report a strategy to design a new polar 3D tetrahedral framework with composition Zn4Si2O7Cl2. We use a molten salt medium to enable low temperature crystallization of nanowires of this new compound, by relying on tetrahedral building units present in the melt to build the connectivity of the oxychloride. These units are combined with silicon-based connectors from a non-oxidic Zintl phase to enable precise tuning of the oxygen content. This structure brings high chemical and thermal stability, as well as strongly anisotropic hole mobility along the polar axis. These features, associated with the ability to adjust the transport properties by doping, enable to tune water splitting properties for photoelectrocatalytic H2 evolution and water oxidation. This work then paves the way to a new family of mixed-anion solids

Abstract

Multinuclear solid state NMR (including 43Ca NMR), in combination with DFT calculations, is applied to the study of the crystal structure of whewellite, CaC2O4‧H2O. This particular hydrated calcium oxalate is of paramount importance as it corresponds to a major phase present in urinary stones. 43Ca MAS NMR experiments and GIPAW calculations were performed in order to further refine neutron diffraction data. The sensitivity of 43Ca NMR as a structural probe is demonstrated. This is the first step for the full description of calcium oxalates at the DFT level and the characterization of interfaces between these biomineral phases and organic phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Greener solvents for the processing of preceramic polycarbosilane: application in the preparation of B 4 C/SiC composites.

Abstract

The innovation introduced in this study consists of replacing toluene with safer solvents such as cyclopentane or diethyl ether in the processing of a preceramic polycarbosilane (allylhydridopolycarbosilane, AHPCS) and assessing its impact on the functionalisation of B 4 C powders to produce B 4 C/SiC composites. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) with ATR and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy revealed no major modification in the polymer structure. SEC/MALS analysis showed a slight change in the number-average molar mass of the polymer regardless of the functionalisation solvent used in correlation with a slight decrease in the polymer ceramic yield due to oligomer loss. The thermal behaviour of the preceramic polymer investigated via mass spectrometry remained unaffected by the solvent change. The search for polymer residues after distillation highlighted the recyclability of both the functionalisation solvent and the polymer, despite a slight increase in the molar mass of the polymer. Finally, the sinterability of B 4 C/AHPCS samples was studied with the preparation of B 4 C/SiC composites via a polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) route and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effect of the solvent on the microstructure and relative density of the specimens (>92%) is negligible. The specimens retain a fine and homogeneous phase distribution despite process modification.
